Red beans and rice celebrating flavor texture and just enough

Ricky D'Souza catered the NEW HAVEN PUBLIC LIBRARY award gala and fundraiser and it was phenominal. There was chopped chicken with BBQ, jambalaya, red beans and rice, Mac n cheese ,green beans, squash medly ,corn and cornbread...It surpassed all expectations. I surveyed a half dozen random others and we ALL concluded this is a resturant we will patronize regularly.

Hidden Gem. We stumbled across this restaurant today looking for a place to grab a bite. Looking at reviews and getting recommendations from the staff-- I settled on the brisket sandwich. It was perfect! The flavor was rich, the meat was perfectly cooked and the sauce was just right! I will definitely come back! Best brisket I have had in CT! P.S. it was nice to see HBCU pride inside as well! #hamptonu

The ribs were decent, but a little too fatty. The sauce was lacking some flavor so I added a little zesty honey mustard at home which greatly improved the flavor. 4 stars for the ribs. The mac and cheese needs improvement. It was not even close to what I have come to expect as someone born and raised in the southern US. It was dry, soggy, and lacking flavor. 2 stars for the mac and cheese. All in all, not bad but not great either. Unfortunately this didn't fulfill my barbecue craving so my search continues!

Hubby and I were in the area and decided to share dessert (okay I know a brisket sandwich isn't dessert for most people, but it is when you've already each eaten a large sandwich from down the block 5 mins prior). Brisket had a very nice bark, was smoky, and quite flavorful. Slightly on the leaner side but the sauce really helped bring it all together. Sauce isn't vinegar-y. The toasted bun was a really nice touch. COVID-19 observations: zero indoor or outdoor seating. All tables and chairs were piled in a corner and looked like a small version of the gym where I used to have marching band practice, complete with sports team pennants and all. Take-out only. Deliciousness to go? Yes. Staff had face masks and were bumping to Drake. We will be back for sure to have a main meal. Not dessert. :D

When all of the racial injustice protests began happening, my wife and I decided that we wanted to take part in making positive changes. One such way is by supporting black-owned businesses. We had heard great things about Ricky D's and decided to order take-out one night. We were happy to see that they were offering take-out options via UberEats during the COVID-19 pandemic. We ordered the Combination platter with a quarter stack ribs, brisket, and pulled pork. For our sides we ordered Mac & cheese, baked beans and cornbread. We also ordered a loaded bake potato with rib tips. We shared a little bit of everything. Delicious food!! My wife enjoyed the pulled pork the most. My favorite was the ribs; great hickory flavor! We would definitely order from them again. Next time we'll probably order BBQ sandwiches to change it up.

    Going to the dogs!!! Lol

Seen on Foodie Fridays and decided to give a try. Well from the looks of the establishment we wanted to turn around- smoky windows and walls okkk it's a barbecue spot, so we overlooked that. The food was why we came. Ordered full rack Mac n Cheese and collard greens. Let's just say we should have went with our gut and left. Ribs cooked okay but the taste and sauce was off straight wasted, collards very bitter no seasoning no nothing the meat looked weird, and the Mac n cheese was more like cinnamon and cheese. Gotta look past foodie Fridays for now on!!!! Keep it moving 51.00 wasted

I caught Metro North from Grand Central and after the 2+ hour ride that's when I found out that they had no seating, which that is my fault for not researching. As I was waiting the gospel music was playing and it was nice. Once I got my food. I immediately gave it a try because I didn't want it cold or reheated for my review. The soul food empanadas with chicken were pretty good I would give them a solid 7 out of 10. The smothered chicken was very salty in my opinion. I would rate it a 5 out of 10, and the Mac & cheese tasted like boxed velveeta which I would rate a 4/10. I'm disappointed at how over hyped it seem. Not pictured was my order of fried fish and it was bland with no seasoning. The lemon on the side did no justice. I could've honestly caught it at a bad time because it was a Sunday and very busy, but I'm definitely not interested in going back.

We got our soup bases first, rice, then meats, seafood, veggies, and noodles, everything arrived quickly and stayed stocked. Service was great and our waitress Dana was nice. A few things were disappointing though: the grill wasn't centered on the table and kept turning off, which made cooking a little frustrating and cramped. This location also doesn't offer crab legs (even though we saw them online), which was a big letdown for my daughter. The sauce/appetizer station was just wack, the dessert area was really lacking no ice cream, only sponge cake and some stale looking popcorn. Dana did bring our table 1 cupcake, which was sweet of her. Overall, we had fun and left full after about 1.5 hours, (limit is 2) but the desserts, missing crab legs, and grill issues make me not want to return. The food itself was fresh and flavorful, though, and service was fast and friendly.

The drinks were also pretty good. I'd give them about an 8 out of 10, so no complaints there. Where things became frustrating was with the Build Your Own burger pricing. The base burger (1/2 lb charbroiled beef) was $14.95, which seemed reasonable at first. However, I was surprised to see how quickly the price climbed once a few basic toppings were added. Here's how the burger ended up breaking down: Base burger: $14.95 Bacon: $6.00 Fried egg: $4.00 American cheese: $1.95 Mayo: $1.00 That brought the burger to $27.90 before tax, which is nearly double the base price for what most people would consider a fairly standard bacon, egg, and cheese burger. I understand charging for add-ons, but $6 for bacon and $4 for a fried egg feels excessive, and it was surprising to see the cost climb that high so quickly. Overall, the service was great and the drinks were solid, but the burger pricing left me pretty disappointed. It is safe to say that if I were to return to this restaurant, I would not be selecting a burger again.

We heard about the…read morebottomless mimosa brunch here at Cast Iron Chef Chop House & Oyster Bar so we pulled up to check it out! Here's how it went... Atmosphere/Appearance: Set right on the busy State Street is this gem. There's no private parking, but plenty of comfortable, spacious street parking right out front. Once inside you're immersed in a very fine-dining, elegant, laid-back atmosphere. Lots of woods, intimate-low lighting and upbeat music. I loved the vibes in here. The first room is your bar room where the rail is off to the left, but with plenty of seating to the right. If you continue through the room you enter the main dining room where it's all booths and other tables. Service: Stacey was our server. Things got off to a bit of a rocky start, but they smoothed out throughout the brunch. Food/Drinks: The mimosa was okay... It was REALLY strong because there's orange vodka and orange liqueur in it. It kinda killed the flavor for me because I'd prefer a traditional mimosa with minimal juice, but... no matter. They're bottomless... or supposed to be... Just be mindful of who your server is. Brunch can consist of a prix-fixed menu, which is what we did so we'll be going through that. First up were the Homemade Sausage Gravy and biscuits. These were super smothered and fantastic. Hot, savory, meaty, salty and even had a bit of a subtle sweetness. The biscuit was soft, butter and had crispy edges. Next up were the Cinnamon Rolls. These were HUGE. Lol. Like, how are we supposed to eat AND drink all of this stuff?! The exterior of the roll was crispy and the inside very soft. Not over-the-top sweetness or anything. These were very balanced. Next up were the Bananas Foster Pancakes. But this thing was enormous. It was so thick, like literally an inch thick. Lol. Fresh bananas sliced right on top, it cut like butter, was soft with the perfect crispy edges and these were AMAZING. Punch of sweetness up front, fluffy texture and just a great pancake. For dinner, this restaurant usually serves Cast Iron Popcorn instead of bread, so Stacey let us try it! It was smokey, a little-little sweet with a little bit of salt and maybe a hickory barbecue flavor. I liked it. Lastly, I chose the Steak & Eggs over Salmon & Eggs, but got to try both since my wife was with me. Each comes with gigantic fried potatoes, 3 eggs, a piece of toast, caramelized onions and your protein of choice. My steak was cooked perfectly (medium-rare). The flavors were excellent. It was a little fatty and just was done very well. Value: $64.96 for bottomless mimosas and the prix-fixe menu. Probably the best value brunch in the state. SO MUCH FOOD and strong drinks. I don't know what else you'd want! In conclusion, I really enjoyed myself here and have revisited since my first time! Everything was just as awesome as the first.
