Rick's Tattoos is awesome. Zak Warren did a fantastic job on my first tattoo EVER, and I absolutely love it. And Zak. And Rick's. Best experience I could have imagined. (And since I took 41 years to get my nerve up to do this, I've imagined a TON.) I could not be happier with it. The lines are beautifully clear and crisp, and the execution is exactly what I wanted in every way. I love it and will definitely go back when/if I ever decide on another one. My husband had a similarly great experience with a more senior artist there, Ben Krist. His tattoo is a larger and extremely intricate geometric line design, with overlapping circles and tons of detailed symmetry that required serious tattoo artist skills to pull off. I actually thought it was crazy to even try. But Ben did it perfectly. These guys are good. I don't have personal experience with the other artists there, but all seem to get rave reviews across the board. You can call ahead to discuss artists and appointment options if you want, or just walk-in anytime and sign in at the desk (just like you might do at a nail salon). I know I asked them lots of questions, on the phone and in the shop, and they were very helpful and happy to answer them every time. I've done almost twenty tattoos with Keani at Rick's since September 2022 (yes, it's a lot, I know). There's a reason. Keani does incredible work in both color and black, and works with me to ensure that we're both on the same page before we start out. The studio vibe is great (other artists, support staff, and clients are friendly and all supportive of everyone getting their work done), the prices are fair for the quality of the work, and it's a really awesome experience. Bottom line is that whenever I schedule a session at Rick's with Keani, I count it down like a kid on Christmas, and it's the best part of my month. Rick's tattoos: I made an appointment here for a friend who was in town, and went with her while she got a small tattoo done on her leg. Overall, it was a great experience-- super quick, easy, and my friend could not be happier with her tattoo. I would definitely recommend this spot. Pros: Location: The location of Rick's tattoos is extremely convenient! Located in Arlington right on Lee Highway, this is just under 5 miles outside of DC. It was a very nice day out when we went, so my friend and I were actually able to walk from DC on the pedestrian trail, however there seems to be many places to park around the parlor. When you arrive, make sure to use the raised backdoor to enter the shop, as the front door (facing the highway is not accessible) Price: The prices here were extremely fair, reasonable, and lower than I have seen in DC. The cost of my friend's small tattoo was $100 total. There is a cash machine onsite, and the site only accepts cash (as do most tattoo spots) Outcome of Tattoo: The tattoo came out exactly as my friend desired. It was a pretty small and simple tattoo, and I her words "it could not be more perfect, it looks even better than I imagined". Service: Service at Rick's tattoos was quick and clear! My friend and I walked in on a Thursday afternoon, around 4, and were attended to in under 2 minutes. My friend was laying down, and actually getting her tattoo within 10 minutes of arriving. I was amazed at the quick service and efficiency. Almost painless: My friend, who has a pretty low pain tolerance, shared with me that her tattoo felt almost painless, and seemed to heal within days! She said it felt like a scratch or prick, nothing more than that! Cons: Lack of individual rooms: The one con that I will possibly list (and not really a major con) is that my friend received her tattoo in a pretty open area of the shop. It is a very bright and open-out, and she didn't have a ton of privacy. Her tattoo was almost on her butt, so I think she might have felt mildly self conscious, however I don't think she minded too much. I am unsure as to whether if you book an appointment in advance, it would be possible to get a more private room or area, depending on your comfort level and area of tattoo placement? This might be worth calling and asking about if you are considering this spot! I came in with my husband on a Saturday morning. A coworker told us to get their early with a walk in because they tend to get busy quick; he was right! We were first in line. The process was easy and what you'd expect for some badass tattoo artist. This was my third hand tattoo and Ben did by far the best out of the other places I've gone. Also THE PRICE was a pleasant surprise. Most places had a $200 Minimum but his was $100. He made some small talk and was friendly. We talked about the art and how most places continue to go over their lines instead of "committing to the first" as he explained he does. My husband had Amy and he said he had a wonderful experience. This was only his second tattoo and he has a low pain tolerance. He couldn't get over how painless and easy this experience was. We are already planning our next tattoo with them! I've never made a yelp review but I felt obligated to for Ricks. I've gotten 4 tattoos here in the past two months. Two from Bricks, one from Zac, and one from Keani. They totally crushed each design with zero hassle -- walk in, show them a design, in the chair in under an hour. I've always been the type to have a singular artist, but at Ricks, any of them can work on me. Everyone at the shop is chill and Rob at the desk is a total bro. I've had nothing but positive experiences. I recently took my little sister to get a tattoo here for her 18th birthday and she had a great experience. Krista did her tattoo and it came out amazing. She was super nervous about the whole thing but I'm giving props to Krista for making it a cool experience for her. We even ran into Rick while walking in and struck up a convo with us -- he's a total bad ass, and was very sweet to my little sister. I've now gotten two tattoos at Rick's and I've always been happy with my experience. The prices are extremely reasonable and both tattoos have come out better than some I've gotten at other places. My husband and I got tattoos on Valentine's Day as a walk-in and we were able to be seen relatively quickly. Zak, while being on the newer side as far as experience goes, only a few years under his belt, he did some incredibly clean work. His lines are perfect and it was awesome seeing how much dimension he was able to achieve with his shading. My biggest problem with this place is parking. My husband drives a big truck and when there isn't available parking in the tiny lot behind the building, it is difficult to turn around to actually leave the lot. However, being in such close proximity to DC, it isn't enough of an issue to ding this place for it. I will certainly be coming back for more. read more

I was very anxious to try a new tattoo place but I was really happy with my experience here! I came in on Saturday as a walk-in at 5 pm (Saturday is only walk-in, no appointments). This was risky because they could've been very busy but right when we walked in we were greeted from the counter by a woman who called me over, had me sign in and asked me what I wanted. I already had a small koi fish piece and I sent it to her right there. She got it printed and to one of the artists within 10 minutes and the artists asked me where I wanted it and how big. I had Amy and I freaking love her. She talked me through the tattoo I had and gave me advice on reworking it a bit because of the size I wanted. She got a quick rework done, showed me the sketch on my arm and I loved it so she went to go set up. She told me right there how much she would charge for this piece. It was $150 which is great, I was expecting to pay more. You sign a waiver and they scan your ID and then you pay (CASH ONLY). Amy was friendly and kept the convo going the entire time. She was pretty fast and professional. We were there a total of an hour from parking in the back to walking out. This is my favorite tattoo I have at the moment and I have 8 others Advice: Know what you want because it'll make your process quicker, bring cash (they have an atm if you don't), look up the artists first if you want a certain look (I didn't but I loved Amy and love my tattoo), only come here if you're ready to spend some coins cause their minimum is $100 but I feel like it's worth the quality. read more

I came to Rick's Tattoo for my fourth tattoo. I wanted a simple fine line tattoo of a semicolon, EKG, and heart on my right wrist. The man at the front desk was friendly and worked to fit me in today. The walk-in wait would be 1.5 hours, as I was second in line. I agreed to wait. I asked for an estimate and the price was a bit higher than I was expecting, but I was okay with continuing. I'd be wanting this tattoo for a long while, so I didn't mind paying the price. The artist, Zeus, drew up my tattoo and I was led inside the tattooing area. Zeus was really chill with the whole process, and that put me at ease. This is the first time I've done a walk-in, so I had no idea what to expect. He finished my tattoo in 10 minutes, and I inspected it. It looks fantastic! The line work was perfect and elegant, which is exactly what I wanted. I was relieved when Zeus put a Saniderm bandage on me, as not all tattoo artists use this. So personable, checked a couple times on location, placement, size. Very thorough with sanitation, before, during, after! Went over after care 3x & gave me an instruction card, which I really appreciated bc it's been 25 years since my last & needed the reminders. I held off on writing this for so long hoping they would offer other solutions. Back On dec 28th i went in for my scheulded tattoo appointment. The artist (bricks) was two hours late and booked someone over me forgetting about me. SEEING as ive been going to this place for 6 years this was annoying to me Amy said she had valued me as a customer and would talk to them about the situation. (has been late in the past multiple times as well) We started my session which i had told him i was worried on how the face would match up to the picture he gave me some reassurance and started i was in the chair the whole day and i had to come back the next day for part two. when i got up from the chair that saturday i didnt love it and ik we basically had small details left i talked to amy about it and she said she would look at it later when i got home i also called the shop and bricks talked me down saying i had said horrible things about him behind his back which was not the case i said i wasnt happy with the face of the art and loved everything else. i went back in day two brought in donuts for everyone as i didnt want any bad blood from this. Bricks then proceeded to laugh multiple times saying how i was so scared tht it would turn out bad and it looks fine to him. i asked him to finish the rest and leave her face alone to see how i feel he proceeded to not listen and work on her face more. he asked me how i felt now and i said i still feel the same and he told me to come back in a couple weeks when it heals. He then proceeded to block me on insta right after. I had amys personal number and i sent her a long text about how i felt the treatment was poor and tht i was unhappy and ive never had an issue being tht ive gotten 21 tattoos from them. I asked for a refund but considering that the tattoo was huge i wanted to know what i could do to fix this she provided me with a refund which ofc i was grateful for but that still doesnt help the fact that im stuck with something tht i cant just cover up with another tattoo. So today I went into the shop and told amy my issues again in person and asked her too look at it, i started to breakdown and cry as she gaslit me the whole time telling me to just go to another shop and it doesnt mean anything tht he would block me and it has nothing to do with me. that no one witnissed how rude he was to me and basically taking his side on the whole situation. i told her how sad tht made me feel as i had been coming for so long and i wouldnt just say this if it wasnt true as i had reccomended my parents to come get their first tattoo from amy as well. She went on about how she didnt want to be fake and she seemed to have not really cared and kept saying tht i had walked out with an amazing free tattoo. And he did his best cause his name is attached to it.And yes he does have the right to block me i dont think me not being happy and wanting him to listen to what i asked for was deserving of a block. not to mention he wanted to charge me $700 ($1000 is the actual cost cheaper cause im a regualer)for this 400 for the outline and $300 for the color. i dont think they can do color on darker skin very well because there pretty much is little to none. As for my problems with the tattoo it was mainly the eyes and her chin and jaw look nothing compared to the picture i showed them he also took out the window which is what i wanted originally and put bullets and ended up doing what HE THOUGHT was best! AND EVEN STILL EVERY OTHER PART OF THE TAT IS AMAZING even though it WASNT WHAT I INITIALLY FUCKING WANTED. BUT HER eye is way too big and sloppy the closed one doesnt really look like a wink and the chin and jaw looked like it was done by a completely diff artist or u can see tht he just started to get tired from the first session. first photo is what i wanted second is fresh and third is healed a bit (all the color faded at this point/ AND THEY WANTED TO CHARGE $300 for some color in her hair) But the owner wants to be dismissive saying but the tattoo is awesome you got it for free, i think i should be so happy every single time i leave the shop and i didnt feel that way if i got anything it was a FREE BAD EXPERIENCE (WONT COME BACK EVER) read more

On a whim I decided to get a tattoo I've been wanting for a while. I called many places to see if they would take a walk in and so many weren't due to Covid. But once I called ricks tattoos they informed me that they had time to take a walk in. I headed over there right away. Before going I had to double check their work because I wasn't sure what their work would look like on darker skin (couldn't find much on their Yelp)... but I figured YOLO lol. when I made it to the tattoo shop the tattoo artist, Ben Krist was very nice and helpful. I already had the tattoo I wanted on my phone and Rick was able to re-create it with a couple of changes. He drew up my tattoo very quickly and went right to work. I have a few other tattoos and I can say that Rick's hand is very light. He also had good conversation and made me feel at ease. I felt like the price was reasonable as another place was trying to charge me much more. I've had my tattoo for about 3 1/2 weeks now. It is still healing but I am extremely pleased. Now, 8 months later, my tattoo still looks AMAZING. I know that it can be hard if you want your letters to be small -- Amy recommended the size font I should use and told me that she would not go any smaller....and I'm glad I took her advice. I had a solid experience at Rick's. I came in with a plan and I was able to fulfill my plan through Blake (piercing) & Amy (tattoos). One of my favorite songs by The Script is called Wonders. I have followed this band since I lived in Ireland and watched them grow into an international sensation. One thing remains consistent is that they write their own songs and all of their songs have a strong meaning behind them. The lyric I had tattooed on my arm is..."make memories not dreams...". I live my life by this. Amy was extremely calm and professional. I feel you have to be in this industry when you have a ball of nerves walk in like me wanting to get tats done. She explained to me what was going to happen, what time frame it was going to take, the cost, and how the process would play out. I have had 2 previous tattoos done. This review is perhaps a bit overdue as I got inked in December but wanted to see how it would heal. It's been over 1 month and It's beautiful. Although I've had a number of piercings done before this was my very first tattoo experience, the moment the front desk lady came down stairs from the deck off their entrance (which is behind the building off the main road down a short and narrow alley BTW) to check on my doggy that was walking around in their private, fenced parking lot to see he wasn't alone (I wasn't immediately visible) I knew they would be good peeps. She was friendly and once inside everyone checked in on me but not in a pushy way as I waited for my brother to get his millionth ink and I was still figuring out what to get myself. I just knew I wanted a brother sister ink bonding time after our first cross country trip to seal the positive experience. He couldn't have picked a better shop. I felt the quote I was given was fair. Note that they take cash payment, they have an ATM inside if you're not cash ready. They took care of other clients as I looked through books and were as quick to accommodate me as a walk-in as they could...I was confident going with the first available artist as I could see they value quality. In the meantime I even learned a few tidbits on jewelry fabrication and marketing from the nice southern piercing gentleman that was there as that's the kind of work I am getting my training in. I chose my clean and simple logo without script for my nomadic and tribal people inspired jewelry and home decor design company artisteobscure. It felt like getting repeatedly scratched by a kitten and as the machine vibrated it got kinda numb...SORTA... better than the horrors I'd imagined. I went in to originally get a tattoo on my finger. The finger guy was straight to the point and honest I was not going to like it a few months down the road as it would only fade or just look like a Black spot. Disappointed I was grateful that he was super honest with me about it. So I decided to get it on my inner forearm. Chuanna (spelling) was SUPER GREAT! She gave me exactly what I wanted and more. I got a tattoo with 5 numbers in the handwriting of my mom (basic, smooth, large, and easily readable). I specifically asked for it "in a size and width where it will still look good in 5 to 10 years." After 1-2 months the edges of the numbers started to blur. It's been approximately 7 months and the lines are more blurred. I took care of it exactly how they told me to, and I've maintained the same weight, so I'm not sure what else I could have done. It's still readable, but it does not look nice or clean, and I'm currently saving up for laser removal. I'm just not happy with it. read more
