Worst customer service ever! I was looking for some fish food and have had experiences in the past with overpriced food. So I scanned the food with an app to check the price. Some large employee said "I can't believe you are scanning the price right in front of me! Buy it online and see if they help you when your fish die." I have had my fish for about 6 years and am in the military so they have been all around the country. I don't think they are going to die. I don't know why I even thought about buying the food there. Conscience I guess but I walked around in the back. Came out and sat the food on the counter. I guess they were talking about me because as I walked out the door they said, I guess he did. Great local fish store with a wide variety. They also have birds and rabbits. All the fish I have bought have lived. The challenge with this store is getting someone to help you get the fish you need. They have a small staff for the number of customers at the store. If someone ahead of you is looking for multiple fish from many tanks, be prepared to wait a long time. It is also one of those places that posts lots of homemade signs about their various house rules -- no eating, etc. There is a little attitude here. That said, I drive 30 miles to go here since I like their products. read more

I went to Ricks Pet store to get a 3 dollar pack of live meal worms for my sons Lizard. The people at the front desk were talking,and unattentive to my request. I finally ask do you have any Meal worms. The lady went to the back, and came back 3 minutes later. Now I am next in line, and a rude lady was behind me in line, talking loudly to her kids. My son distracted me only 3 feet from the desk, and this rude lady darted in front of me and smiled. Ok, so I lost my place,The lady behind the counter saw this and just fed in, as they both made sport of my situation, and began a meaningless, long, conversation. After 5 more minutes I said I need to be checked out, and the rude, role model lady, cursed at me in front of my son, and her two girls??? I finally got to check out paid for my worms. I ask to speak to a manager, and the man there said" he is out and will be back after 6pm." I found out that they close at 6pm! In other words dont call !!!I have been going there for 3 years, and the people there,and this experiance has turned me off to those smart, non caring people. I always get my weekly supply of crickets from this place. People are always helpful and the crickets are fresh. I do wish they were open before 11am but its worth the wait to get 144 crickets for only $11.00. read more

Very helpful and knowledgable staff! I'm not sure what the other reviewers were talking about. I was asked by every person working there if I needed help before I made my selection. Fish were beautiful, healthy, and I was impressed with the selection. The only bad thing I could say is the dry goods section was crowded but nothing that would keep me from coming back. Parrot owners take note! This place is PACKED full of wonderful supplies. They have a fantastic selection of toys, food, and cages. One of my cockatiels came from Rick's, and it's obvious to me she was well taken care of - she was healthy and happy on the day I met her and has been for the past year and a half! Every time I've asked a question or even just struck up a conversation with an employee, it was obvious that they know their stuff about birds, which you very rarely get in, say, a larger-chain pet store. I make it a point to stop in and resupply every time I'm in town. read more

I love this place! To me, this is what a petstore SHOULD be! Dark, a little cluddered, well-kept animals galore, and a smell that when you walk in you just go "yep this is a petstore" but at least for me it's not unpleasant! A couple years ago they were pretty sketchy and most of the animals sick, but in the past year or so they have really cleaned up their act and I now LOVE it there! Sometimes you go and you can get GREAT service,and knowledge. Sometimes you can go and it's very crowded with some younger/newer employees who are struggling. It's hit and miss but even on a miss I now always walk out of there satisfied, and holding a big brown paper bag. :) read more

You know? Ricks is a pretty down to earth pet store. I read several complaints about the staff being unfriendly. Really? I have talked to several different employees and find them pretty friendly. Not kissing my rear end friendly, just pleasant. Everyone has an opinion. You know the saying........opinions are like " ", everyone has one. I guess one could take their business to , um Walmart where the staff is as dumb as a box of rocks. Or on a good day, go to Petsmart and if you're lucky you'll find ONE guy in the fish department that really knows something. Good luck with that! Or hey, why not Petco! I like Rick's Fish & Pet Supply. They have always been very hospitable to me. There prices are a bit more expensive than the chain pet stores but they have a much better selection of fresh water fish than any other pet store in the area. read more

Vibe is one of employee misery. After 15 minutes looking at fish and other things, I was never asked "Can I help you?" Beware, no returns for cash, credit, debit only store credit. Policy is not printed on the receipt and they don't tell you up front. Very very weird place. read more

if i could give this place a zero i would. ricks fish and pet supply does not properly take care of their animals as you will see walking past small tanks kept very dirty. i bought a pacman frog and i take very very good care of my animals. to finally get the albino pacman i always wanted, to it dying within days was heartbreaking. she had thrown up her stomach along with parasites, she died over the course of a day. rick was not sympathetic and very rude over the phone, he doesnt seem to care for animals like myself and many other pet owners do, he should not be running a pet store as he does not seem to care about their health and wellness, nor does he his customers. read more

Buyer beware when purchasing frozen mice and rats. This business sells frozen rodents that were once lab rats in their previous life. They also have very high prices for frozen or live rats and mice. They have very poor customer service. If you want good quality frozen rodents buy from the reptile hobby shop. All rats we got from Rock's Fish and Pet had holes and were covered in blood all of my reptiles refused to eat them. read more

Best selection of fish in Maryland or Pennsylvania! Healthy hard to find fish. Cardinals, many types of angelfish, rainbow Congo,... Very knowledgeable and super helpful staff. Not a huge hard goods selection, but this is the place to go for fish. Quality birds and supplies too. Well taken care of parrots. I bought my Orange wing amazon here 15-20 years ago. She's still the best! This store has been around for many years and we keep coming back! Well worth our hour drive! read more

Bought what I thought were Siamese Algae Eaters which are a very peaceful fish. They sold me False Siamese Algae Eaters which are aggressive to each other and moderately aggressive to other fish. A pet store should know what they are selling their customers. read more

This review is from a perspective of freshwater aquaria and tropical fish only. Rick's is a bit of an enigma wrapped in a mystery. They have a good variety and their stock is healthy. They seem to have a lot of support help. The support help seems to be very into maintenance of the aquariums themselves and not much into offering help to customers. I know from experience that some of them are very knowledgeable. You just have to track them down and interrupt . The store is very cluttered and does not present a good impression. But, if you know what you want, they probably have it....somewhere..... read more

After reading the mixed reviews on Ricks I decided to take a look and decide for myself. I loved Ricks! I spent about 2 hours looking at all the beautiful fish tanks and talking to the employees about them. I am somewhat new at fish keeping and had alot of question which they took the time to answer in detail and were very knowledgeable about the different types of fish (they let me know what did and did not suit my tank). The fish were slightly more than chain stores but looked much much more healthy and energetic. Even though it is about an hour drive for me to get there I will gladly go there to get information and fish that I know are taken taken care of. read more

Been going to Rick's for a few years since they sell actual large crickets at a much more reasonable price then Petsmart or Petco and I can buy them in bulk. I got a fish tank earlier this week and decided I would go to Rick's to get my fish...big mistake. I went in 2 days after getting my tank to have the water checked and to make get anything I needed to add to the water. The employee kept having to ask what to do. I bought a couple of things to fix the water and left. Yesteday I went in to start getting fish. I waited 20 minutes to get someone to help me and eventually had to go search for an employee. I had done research on what I wanted but I still made sure to ask that all my fish (got 4) were completely compatible and that the number I got was a good number to start with since it's a new tank. Within 2 hours, 1 fish had already started fin nipping and bullying the other 3 fish. I went in today to ask if I could exchange the fish for another since I didn't want it to kill my other fish. I was planning on getting one that was a few dollars more then the $12 I spent on the mean fish. Rick told me that I could bring it back for a partial credit. He said that if he allowed people to exchange fish then they would always start bringing fish back the next day just because they didn't like them or they didn't fit in with their tank...And that's a problem why? My husband said he did it because he could have put the fish I returned back on display and sold it for the full price again, while keeping however much of my money because I was misinformed by one of his employees. I wish I could go elsewhere for my crickets since I really don't want to go back there. read more

I have been going to Rick's for MANY years, since they were downtown in fact, but my review is going to be for recent happenings. I had a very sick bird that a certain vet deemed a Hospice case. They told me to put him in a 5 gallon tank with a red heat lamp to keep him warm and wait for him to die. We left the vet late so ran by Petco in Westminster to get a bulb which they told me 40W would be fine. For some reason I felt compelled to call Rick's on my way back to Frederick. They said that wattage light would fry my bird and told me to come by the store even though they should have been closing. I arrived after closing to a couple staff, including Rick, who were genuinely concerned for my bird. Not only did Rick set me up with an under tank heater and some specialty food free of charge, he also recommended another vet for a second opinion. I went to see that vet (shout out to Dr. Geibel at Quince Orchard Vet) and couldn't have been more blessed to have seen him in my time of need. He gave me hope for my bird instead of just writing him off due to his age. I went back to Rick's after visiting the vet to get some crickets for some other animals I have, and told him the update. At that time he also recommended a special light for my bird. He thoroughly explained the light and the benefits and how much it helped his birds in just a couple weeks. I was skeptical, but decided I would do anything to try and help my baby. That light is AMAZING! I could see a difference in my bird in less than 12 hours! My 18 YEAR old lovebird is doing very well and I can not thank Rick and the staff enough for all their help and recommendations! This was just one example of their outstanding service! I have tons of animals and they never hesitate to help in any way they can! read more

Rick's is a fantastic place. Every time I've visited the staff always come up to me with smiles. I always have questions to ask and every time I seem to talk to the right person about the right animals. I've been thinking about getting a pair of female rats because I miss owning rats. But they also let me ask about all the snakes, were patient with me and let me hold some of the rats for over half an hour while we talked. They didn't have any female rats so the employee that was helping me asked if I was willing to wait another month or two as one of his own rats is pregnant. He said if she has two girls he will give me a call and also gave me all these links for information to help. If they can help, they always do. They want to follow up with you and they want to know how the pets you buy from them are doing. They are also eager to answer questions and to see you take home that special pet, but won't try to force you to buy something if you're not ready. Rick's knows how to handle their animals and treat them so they will be loving when you buy them. They are knowledgeable and want to make sure you leave happy in the end. read more
