I ordered a cedar picket fence package from Rick's custom fencing. When I went to pick up the fencing only the tickets were made of cedar and the rest was made of Doug fir and the posts were made of pressure treated posts. I took the package back to Rick's and told them that I ordered a cedar fence and I expected cedar wood. I said I wanted to keep the cedar pickets that were priced out on the invoice at $2.79 but the rest of the package I wanted to replace with cedar but I didn't want to buy it from them that I would just buy it from Home Depot. So they unloaded the whole cedar fence package and left me with the pickets but then raise the price of the tickets to $4.89 per ticket and then told me that they couldn't give me my money back that I would have to wait for a corporate check to be mailed to me. It clearly stated on the invoice that the pickets were $2.79 each but they managed to find an extra cost making them 489 each. I decided at the last minute to just keep the whole fence package and so when I went back out to load the package back up with the loader I was being specific on the looks of each board and asking him to replace certain ones and he indicated to me that we're not trying to sell you a picture perfect fence. The salesman kris was very rude and disrespectful to my needs I will never ever shop there again or recommend them. I'm now paying someone to come back and fix their work, and honestly I wish I could go back in time and never have used them at all. The work that Rick's does looks nice for the most part, but they are a pain to work with. Basically you'll get great customer service up until you sign the contract and then you don't hear from them. They don't complete projects when they say they will. This has occurred each time I have worked with them including a Specrail fence I had done in 2013 and now a Acrylite cover/ fence/ step project that was booked two months ago. I predicted these shenanigans would happen again just the other day and sure enough my wife got a call from Rick's just now for the project that was supposed to happen in two days. Rick's Fencing did a great job on our fence. It blew down in the high winds of winter and they were out there 48 hours later with an estimate and several potential options. Initially they said 2-3 weeks before starting the job, but they called and then came out one week later and completed it over a couple of days. Dillon and Eric were friendly and helpful, as was Luke our estimator/salesperson. While you can undoubtedly find someone to build your fence a bit cheaper, you cant rest easy knowing you have very capable, friendly guys who will do a great job and that you can go back to again and again if needed. read more

Trying to support locally, I called on three separate occasions, over three weeks, asking for a quote on a small fence job. I was told each time that I would get a call back, and the third time was told my info would be forwarded to the manager. Still heard nothing. We got a quote for building a new fence in our backyard that was over 150ft total. Rick's quote was higher than others but liked the idea of having them just put the posts in and build the 2 gates we wanted. Dan (the quote guy) ensured us that if we had any questions during the build to call and someone "would be happy to help". The only reason I didn't give this 1 star is b/c the guys who came put the posts/gates in did it in a downpour and didn't stop. Granted, they made one gate larger than we expected and the other was completely lop-sided and uneven. Not to mention they forgot to bring the post caps we ordered and forgot the NAILS! (Kind of important when building a fence) Not being very handy, I thought "how hard could it be?". We ended up having to have a handyman friend come over to help us out b/c the directions to build the rest of the fence were so vague and not helpful at all for the novice. Perhaps Rick's should assess their customer's knowledge base and handyman experience and make recommendations from there. I called the store for assistance (as Dan said I could) and my name and phone number were taken down - 5 TIMES, with no phone call back. And when I did call, I was put on hold forever. Once I was even told "we are busy here at the store so we can't talk right now, can we call you back?". Finally someone came out to look at the gates and explain to us why our posts were at different heights and not face front (causing a problem with our cap rails). Their solution to fixing our posts that were cut too short (and uneven with each other) was to nail an additional 2 inches of post to the top of both posts. Which just made them taller and still uneven. The post looks like crap with a huge exposed cut space between the post and the part they attached. We were about 10 boards short in order to complete the fence so we went to Mr. Plywood to buy them. We were shocked at how much cheaper the price of the wood was AND it was better quality wood. If you are looking to build a fence - shop around. Just b/c Rick's is well known they are not the best in quality and are awful with customer service follow through. Got quotes from 3 vendors. Did not go with low bid because the salesman from Rick's had us convinced that their expertise was worth the extra thousand dollars. It was NOT. They were unable to cut boards square, to set screws flush, to set joists level, to have tight railings ... It was a long list of problems showing lack of attention to detail. Get in, get the job done fast and expensive but not very good. They talk one heck of a good story but when it comes to doing good work, unable or unwilling to perform. VERY VERY disappointed with the work they did for us. I think it best is described by my fiance when she came home after they completed the deck. She walked in the backyard and said "wow, that looks like crap". And she is a minister. We will never deal with Ricks and feel they are the very last choice one should make for their fencing or decking needs. Rick's has been my company's fence techs for some years now. We recently had a bus back into our parking lot fence and damage a few slats. We haven't had Rick's come out for anything for like 3 years (testimony to the craftsmanship holding up under tough OR winters). We called them up to have them inspect it if they had a tech in the area within the week, but they had a guy come by the next day and I figured he would just look at it and report back. He actually replaced the slats in no time and we weren't even charged. Prompt and reliable service is what you get here folks. read more

Find somewhere else to go with for your fencing and decking needs!! Avoid Ricks at all costs, your fence (or deck) and your pockets will thank you for it later!! They have outright shady business practices! When I asked about the Rustic option I was told they would have knots in them, nothing about them being rotted out or broken to the point of not being functional. Apparently to Ricks Custom Fencing 'rustic' means rotting, infested with termites, broken and unusable.Rustic also meant they were not returnable. Now I'm stuck with over half of the boards that I can't use and have to purchase (elsewhere of course) to finish the job. Post setting was done but only with a small amount of concrete so all posts are essentially just in backfilled dirt. When you pay a whole heck of a lot of money for something done, you expect it done right. Ricks is far from doing things right. read more

Horrible experience when you are asking the service .. lifetime warranty is a joke when the service cause damages I was really hoping i can give better reviews than this since we were thinking we used a fencing company with good reputation and warranty . The saleguy was very polite and professional. But installation was below average and price is higher than competitor . Okay, i think we choose for warranty in the lifetime. we installed before christmas so it is lightly used till the spring. The gate broken after 3 months and looks still flimsy. when i called, project manager showed up in couple of days and repaired. Now we found sprinkler leakage under the post of fence. when i called, i was told this water leak is not covered by liability and i didn't get a response after 3 days i reported this issue . we found that since sprinkler system wont be tested till dry season. i haven't heard any work breaking water pipe not covered by maintenance. i am still in contact of this issue but i am very disappointed about quality and service on this company they are not responding. if we have to pay out of our pocket to repair the leakage issues brought by fence installation that is not acceptable service we got Other than the sprinkler water pipe leakage issue, the two gates installed at our beautiful backyard is very flimsy we worry it will break again in short time this year. The quality is definitely below expectation. Update: The site manager joe has contacted me back with solution and fixes .Very nice and profession guy who takes over as manager after my fence was installed. obviously the custom gate is an issue without metal frame in place so need replace the traditional one. Aaron the rep came out and discussed a few things I was worried about on site and Tony and a different Aaron did the actual install and were awesome. They even helped with a few extra simple things I needed done with my fence project but was going to ask the boyfriend to do it. They were quick and cleaned up everything prior to leaving. At first I was impressed with the customer service at Rick's. The salesman, Aaron, was friendly and polite and seemed to understand what I was looking for - 50 feet of materials for a picture frame-style fence (I had the brochure in hand), with the intention of adding the other 150 feet of materials as my budget allows. The prices were reasonable, and when I paid for this batch of materials I also picked up brochures for decking and pergolas (future projects after the fence is complete). Upon returning a week later to pick up the materials, my friend and I realized that 14 pieces of trim were missing from the order. The guys who loaded the materials were polite and offered to find Aaron inside to fix the problem. Aaron proceeded to blame me for his mistake in misunderstanding what I had ordered and told me the price for the trim would be an extra $45. The money was not that big a deal - however it should have been included in the original invoice. When I asked for a discount to make up for the confusion (and his lack of apology), his response was "no, I can't do that, the computer locks the prices in". (Apparently the computers are all-powerful at Rick's). I paid for the missing trim and left the salesroom in tears. If I want to be blamed for someone else's mistake, I don't need to pay someone - I have teenaged stepchildren. As for my future purchase of fencing ($1,500+), decking ($1,000+), and pergola ($800+) materials, I won't be going back to Rick's. They guarantee happy customers, but a customer leaving the salesroom in tears (observed by more than two staff members) is clearly not a happy customer. Oh, and my friend? He's a contractor. Save your money and Take your business elsewhere. The sell crap wood for almost twice as much as Lowes. They shipped me cracked fencing and since it wasn't within 90 days I was SOL. I had the wood stored in the garage as the weather turned to crap and couldn't find a good time to complete. I figured it was 10 boards they would exchange them out since we spent a few grand there. Nope! Seriously You can purchased 20 cedar boards at Lowes for the price they would charge you for 10. With military you can get an additional 10% off! Do the math and save your money!! read more

Rick's Fencing to the rescue! Our fence that separates us from our neighbor needed to be replaced due to wind damage and a non-professional install. We called Rick's Fencing who had helped us on two other projects at our home. Mike and Chip were amazing - they came prepared, reviewed the scope of work to be done. And even went above and beyond to fix a trellis that was not properly supported. Would I recommend Rick's Fencing? You bet! Had a deck rebuilt last year at $15k. NO ONE ever came by after work was complete to assess the quality. I've had to call them out twice for boards coming loose, and even then they're slow to respond. Sales people respond quickly for new work, but after that, they don't seem to care at all about the quality of their work. I would never recommend them at this time. read more

We had Rick's install an electric gate with a key pad and two remotes for the cars. The remotes have never worked correctly and often we have to get out of the car and walk up to the gate for the remotes to work. Rick's has not been helpful at all. The person we called that did the installation argued with my husband over the phone that it was a programming issue but my husband finally convinced him to come back out to check it out. He said it may be from the over head power lines. Hmm, never mentioned that during the installation or when we ordered the gate. The GTO remotes are cheap plastic and sound like they're going to break when you press it. Rick's does not want to take responsibility for a product that they installed and we spent several thousand dollars for it to work correctly. read more

Buyer Beware! The sales men talk a good talk, but our deck replacement that was scheduled to be completed in 3 days took over 2 months. If you decide to use this company, I advise to check their work daily, and check the quality of the lumber and don't accept any bad lumber they may try to use on your job. The workmanship was unacceptable and if we had not caught the MANY problems they would have left it that way. I fear for people that hire them to do the whole job, because if they had put the decking on, some of the poor workmanship we came across would have been hidden. (we layed the decking to save $) We hired them because they claim to have 30 years experience. Having a business lic for 30 years does not mean much, when they're employees sent out to do the job have only been there a few months. I would not and could not recommend for anyone to hire this company. Take your time and shop around. Almost any contractor will do decking and fencing. Don't think this company is your only option. Salem Oregon Customer service is NOT important to the management at this branch. Never again will I have ANY work done by the Salem branch. Straight out disrespect and BULLYING from branch management. Too many shortcuts in their construction. They may carry quality product, but they install damaged product after taking three weeks to finish a two day job. Scratches and obvious safety concerns in their construction. Had a privacy fence installed last spring. My biggest concern was keeping my 2 very friendly dogs confined. Salesman came by, took measurements, and reassured me the fence would be secure. He said the posts had a 30 year life while the planks had a 20 life. Spent over $10,000 and am totally unhappy. Three of the planks have already snapped with many more loose. Had 2 gates installed and neither of the locks work. Have been trying to get a resolution the past 6 weeks with little results. Don't waste your money like I did. The solution is simple. There is no middle support and the cedar planks have many knots. I'm not a rocket scientist and in this case don't need to be one. Very little force to the middle will either loosen it or snap it. read more
