I can't speak highly enough about this company and their work. We needed a custom gate across our driveway and had a hard time finding someone to do the job--it was a difficult job (very wide driveway on a slight hill, gates needing to open outward, etc) and it seems many companies are very busy. We even had a couple of quotes from other companies and then were ghosted. With Rick's, everything was smooth and reliable from the start. Great communication from the initial visits for measurements, to the estimate, to the construction. Allen S was out installer and he was awesome. Super friendly, great communication, did some problem solving on the spot as unexpected complications arose, and we ended up with a beautiful, sturdy gate. AND...at one point there was a car alarm going off a ways down the block. Allen went to see what was going on and it was an elderly lady with memory problems who had gotten lost and was scared. I want to start by saying the crew was nice. I did not have the fence replaced my neighbor did. They had to dig new post holes and dumped the ROCKS and dirt in our yard. I caught that and got them to clean up the dirt, they left the rocks Moving down the fence there is at least one really big rock on our side that is not our rock. The bottom of the fence does not go to the ground on our side so we are left looking at even more rocks. They left the end of the fence open and my dog can get out. I caught the other two places they left open. Sadly I missed one place where they disconnected my fence. I have several pictures to back me up. I would NOT recommend Rick's to anyone! I hope the neighbors side looks better than the mess we were left with. read more

Warning; Car damage! SEXISM! Termites! Over priced! False BID! Drug using employees! Damaged fence! Just run .... Part 1: the salesman's. We had an L shaped fence installed with Rick's. The salesman came out to measure 2 straight lines and 2 gates. He seemed very professional however apparently he wasn't qualified to measure and missed 20 ft, so of course the bid seemed semi reasonable. Not until installation did they discovery the 20 feet discrepancy and try to charge us $1,000 more already on an $8k job. When the salesman was out initially I (a female homeowner) asked about a quote for my deck, he replied with (after a long pause) "I need to speak with the male of the house, let's just wait for him to come back" and never gave me a quote. Part 2: the two guys who installed the fence over 2 days were very nice, however would smoke weed right outside our house on their breaks. My 3 and 5 year old would ask me what the men were doing. Part 3: the scratched my car when carrying a load of wood back... I have it on camera, they didn't bother to let me know either. Part 4: fence was installed in April and it's now October; less than 6 months later the fence isn't holding up. ‍ read more

Ricks replaced our 22 year old upper and lower decks. They were so badly rotted and degraded that we had not been able to enjoy that portion of our home for quite a while. We decided to bite the bullet and fully replace them. We got quotes from four different builders to do the work, and while Rick's was not the lowest cost, they certainly came across as the most professional and seasoned builders that we had considered. read more

We had a fence built in cooperation with our neighbors but didn't want the cheaply done gate that they went with so decided to have our own done. We wanted wide-opening metal frame game with a nice clean look. We hired Rick's to do the job. Gate looked nice and done on time although it didn't appear to be worth the cost (over $2500 just for the gate). Within a week the nails were popping out and the boards coming loose. They came back and put in bigger nails. Now, less then 3 months later, the boards are warping and nails popping out again. You would think that rather than nailing wood into metal you would use screws...but hey what do I know. read more

Called Rick's for a quote. The prices were astronomical, a minimum of $2,000 more than other bids we received. I agree with the other reviewer's comment regarding sexism - I was also told on the phone that "everyone involved in the decision-making process would need to be present" when the estimate appt was made. I had to confirm I was the homeowner in order to make the appointment, it was automatically assumed I didn't own the home alone. During the consultation, I was discussing enclosing our side yard with my partner because I enjoy laying on the grass. The salesperson also made a comment along the lines of I shouldn't be laying out in my bikini because I'd be causing quite a stir among the neighbors, would attract "peepers." This comment came out of nowhere, I like to read books on a blanket fully-clothed. Apparently my sex organs make this notion incomprehensible. Beyond that and the sky-high quote, our salesperson told us in-person asked if we wanted a formal drawing of the fence mock-up to submit for HOA approval. We didn't receive this so I emailed to inquire. I was told this is only for customers who have paid a non refundable deposit? But also was asked if this was for submitting for HOA approval? Contradictory. Why would anyone pay a deposit without HOA approval?! It's been 2 weeks with no response. Strong pass, especially after reading some of the horror stories in these reviews! read more

Have had several projects completed by Rick's over the past several years, always more than satisfactory. Recently had an issue with wind damage to a gate. Broken vinyl post and latch affected operation and appearance but was certainly not a warranty issue and not a large enough project to dedicate a crew (also not an easy DIY). My experience with Rick's Custom Fencing has been incredible, harkening back to a time when companies took pride in and stood by their work. The former owner of my house contracted Rick's to build a fence and gate around the property, which remains in excellent shape a decade later. That is, except for the gate, which my husband accidentally ran into, bending a bolt that made the gate drag on the ground. When Bruce inspected the damage, he said he just needed to replace the bolt and would only charge me for parts--$16-if I were willing to help him lift the gate in place. Bruce was a pleasure to work with and ended up not even charging me for the parts! Bruce is a quality man working for a quality company that creates a quality product. We recently purchased a house and the sale happened to finalize during the pandemic, which was not ideal timing (duh). We live on a busy street and needed a fence put in quickly to keep our dog safe...he loves to bolt out of an open door. Stu came out and got me a quote within two days, designing a fence for a random photo found on the internet. He scheduled installation two weeks out, and built the exact fence we ask for in one day...Jessy and Tyler even solved some quick problems involving a tricky, sloped walkway and were finished in under 8 hours. PART 1. of my review, more to follow as RCF&D progresses. So far, I have had somewhat of a negative experience. Here's why: - It's all about the sale! Moreover, in my opinion if you are a single elderly woman, (seems a little bit discriminatory), you will be treated as lesser of a person. - Pretty sure the builders started out w/NO plans. When I discovered the roof was incorrectly placed, I contacted the mgr at Gresham location. Now I had already had a negative experience working with a prior deck service, they falsified their CCB #, Bond # etc. I fired Recycling Minds because not only did they lie about things, NOTHING was to code. - Now onto to Ricks Fencing / Decks. The roof was wrongly placed and the posts to hold up the roof/cover. Plus the wrong material color for the roof. The mgr came out and said, "we didn't do this on purpose or against you, it's nothing personal. The sales person did tell me about your prior experience w/other deck builder." Then when I pointed out the problems, AND the material for roof was NOT what I ordered, he had the audacity to say, "maybe it's Karma." (i thought he said it was nothing personal?! that's a pretty personal comment) My daughter feeling protective for her mom said to him, "or maybe its the hazards of living in Gresham!" I asked him if they check out the material / merchandise before putting up the roof? He didn't really say. I asked if he had plans of the deck I would like to see them. He said and I quote, "most people don't ask for the plans." What does that mean? is this ANOTHER personal slam towards me? After he left, the Gen Mgr called to see how things turned out. I am not happy with the results thus far. The Gen Mgr did say since they put on the WRONG material and placement of roof was wrong, they would give me the 20' size roof panels and it will be in the color / design I originally ordered. However, NOW it will be another couple more weeks before it comes. I have been waiting since June to enjoy my backward which has a beautiful forest green space, and still not able to sit out on a deck. Such a disappointment. I really had high hopes in Ricks Custom Fencing and Decks. Oh one more thing. I told the mgr. the posts need to be near the edge of the deck not near the middle, which takes away from utilized space. That the sales rep and I discussed this and HE was the one who noticed the prior deck builders, Recycling Minds, had misplaced them. The mgr said, "its your word against the sales rep on where to place the posts on my deck." I said they are wrong, fix them please. Moreover, I have sent msgs to the sales rep, who has yet to respond. THAT speaks for itself on who said what and who is right! Hopefully, things will turn out better and I can give them a better rating as time goes on. Right now though...not that good. In addition the mgr from Gresham store has showed up on my property unannounced 2x's. Both times he was surprised I just happened to be there. One of the days I had come home sick. What the heck, you don't just SHOW up to a customers home unannounced. And, when I talked with the Gen Mgr and asked him to put in writing our conversation, all he has to say is the Mgr at Gresham store knows what to do. To be honest seems rather vague and a little frightening based on what I have experienced to far. read more

Our 30-year-old wooden fence in our back yard was looking sad and just plain old. When our neighbors behind us suggested that they share the cost of a new fence between us we jumped at the opportunity. We had planned on contacting 3 vendors, but when we met with Rick's Custom Fencing and Decking in June we were confident we had found the right people to do the job. Orlando Juarez and Carlos Rivas showed up in late August -- on exactly the day they said they would. And they completed the job in just over 2 days. I have been sorry we went with Rick's ever since we needed to utilize our warranty. They have yet to fix the problem of or gate sagging. First visit out they did not have product on the truck. Second visit out job seemed as though it would get done until the manager and my husband had to leave. When we got home it was not completed. Then arrived home today to see that some work had been done, but no one notified us that they would be here. No one came to the front door(we have a ring) to see if we were home. The job that was done was done wrong. For the amount of money they charge$$$$, I expect better product and customer service. The new gate door that was rebuilt has new hardware, but now is completly different from the "matching" gate door next to it. It is a complete eye sore. So angry and unhappy. I wish i could tear it down for a full refund. Not worth the money. Still waiting for the 4th visit to see if it will be fixed to their standards not ours. Just want functioning and matching gates. Apparently this is a tall ask.. Will never recommend. October was one year since our fence went in. Gates started bending after 2 months and top boards are all just sitting on top balancing. This is definitely a purchase i regret. read more

If you have a standard deck, fence, or railing project that you want to have done quickly, these are your guys. But if you have a project that takes a bit of finesse, a gate, for example, you are better off finding someone else. After installing our deck railings, the first pass at the gate was a mess with mismatched mitered corners, hardware that was too big and sloppily installed, crooked hinges, and slats that weren't parallel. To their credit, a guy did come back to redo the mess, but we are left with open holes in our deck and new railing posts, nails sticking out, and the gate still hangs crookedly. Not to mention he was two hours late and didn't bring adequate materials. Also not to mention he installed the latch on the wrong side of the gate. Now that it's all done, with no attempt to correct my last complaint, I wish we had gone with a different builder. read more

Considered having Rick's perform my fence work, however my experience with them has been very unsatisfactory. 24 hours after the site visit a quote was sent for the prioritized portion of the project that required coordination with a neighbor. Perfect. BUT then it all went downhill. A quote for the rest of the project was not sent. I emailed 2 days later asking if they could send the gate portion next, a gentle reminder that I was still waiting on the rest of my quote. 7 days went by, no quotes received. I called the office to see if perhaps my email was not received. I was told the email was received and she was working on it. Ok, fine. That was April 8th. Time elapses, nothing received. I call another Rick's location asking if the systems were linked and if my project could be picked up by that store due to the issues I was experiencing. This was on April 15th. I was told they would check with their manager and call me back -instead they had the original individual contact me! She did throw together a quote for the gate and send it that day, however it lacked the design components that were discussed on site back in March (which were also reiterated in an email on April 4th where I provided example pictures ). Her quote/email concluded as follow: " I will need to do a little more research for that one. I'll need to connect with my special order gate guy that is out of the office for the weekend, so stay tuned. " Can you guess what happened next? If you've read this far you can probably guess, 4 more days go by with no updates. At this stage, you would think a simple basic customer service voicemail stating that she had reached out to the custom gate guy and was waiting on a response from him would seem like an obvious next step.....not at Rick's. Here we are still waiting for the rest of the quotes for the remaining parts of the project, because yes those were never sent (no new gate info for that matter either) But, wait for it ....she did want to know if a decision had been made on the 1 section that pertains to the neighbor. Comical, they can't complete a full quote but want to know if the neighbor and I have a conclusion on the shared portion. read more

We hired Rick's Custom Fencing to put in a fence along one side of the yard to replace dying arborvitae. We hired someone to remove all the plants and grind the roots. A few days later Rick's came out and installed 50 feet of fence in pouring rain. Amazing to watch them, the care they took to measure and make sure everything was level and straight. We had Rick's Fencing install a cedar fence and deck and are very pleased with the results and the experience. We first consulted with Luke, who came out to give us an estimate and talk through our questions and project needs. He was extremely professional and personable, and put us at ease with moving forward on such a large ticket purchase. He came out a couple of times to confirm measurements and minor changes to our project requests, being communicative throughout via email and phone. First up was our fencing, which was able to start a couple weeks ahead of schedule. Danny and Aaron arrived promptly each day and were very helpful outlining the process and going through their game plan. They were courteous and easy to work with and cleaned up thoroughly after each of the 3 days. We appreciated the suggestions Danny made to us which related to design choices and some helpful tips for installation which would have gotten overlooked if he had not brought them to our attention (thank you!). We brought them donuts the final day as a small token of our appreciation for their efforts and craftsmanship. A couple weeks later we had Scott and David come out to install the deck in our backyard. They too arrived right on time and walked us through the project plan and covered initial questions. Scott was the lead and was great at asking questions in advance or as they were needed to keep us informed and assured. Both were easy going and very diligent in their work. It surprised us that they got done in 2 days and didn't leave a trace of their work once they left. They got the details right and made us happy with the final results. Some teams might be better than others so we can only speak to the experience we had with the people we worked with. We felt great after our expensive project and would recommend them without hesitation. Being able to finance some of the project (opening up a credit card with a 0% interest on the first year) helped too, and not getting stuck with a processing fee for the other charges on credit card was a nice benefit. read more
