Rick's is a horrible, detestable shop. Stay away!!! They lie and deceive. I have a Jeep that I have owned since it was brand new. It needed an oil pan gasket. They cut the CROSSMEMBER to access the oil pan. They compromised the structure and safety of my Jeep to make a fast buck. And...the weld job on the crossmember is sloppy and unprofessional. I was a faithful customer until I discovered this. If you have had work done there, double check your vehicle to make sure they didn't hack it and put your life at risk. read more

They also gave me a quote while I was figuring things out. They were very understanding while I sorted it out, even though I had made an appointment there a week earlier. A worker from this place stole over $100 worth of gift cards from my center console!!! I dropped my car off last week to have some transmission work done and picked it up this morning. I noticed that my lanyard was sticking out of my center console (which is odd; I always put it in there completely). So I checked and the baggie that contained around 15 gift cards now only had 2! And the moron that did it even left a dirty rag in the console to prove that he went in there and stole from me! I thought I trusted this place after having gone there a few times. I have been bringing in my car to this place for almost a year. in the last few months the service was a bit questionable. in November I brought my car in to see why my check engine light was on. This was after I had gone to AutoZone and was told it was something related to the egr valve. I then take my car to ricks where my I am told I have to pay $89 to hear the same thing. This bothered me because I thought the $89 was to investigate why the light was on. But instead I am charged for what I could be told for free. I almost decided not to go back especially being that same day one of the individuals at the front desk (which was not Rodney, Rodney is a great guy and truly respect him) decided to give me a lecture on how I should have brought my car in earlier. I decided to bring in my car again today. Bad mistake. I had scheduled an appointment ahead of time and was not told there was any conflict that would be a reason for me not to come in. I came in as scheduled and I am I begin to explain why I am bringing in my car. Then the individual stops and tells me I am wasting money because I am not getting anything fixed. Then I explain that I have gotten most of the things I was told fixed by myself or a different mechanic. I go to a different mechanic because I don't live in Mishawaka but in Lafayette. Often my regular mechanic is not available on the days I can be there so I go to ricks because there service is pretty good. at least it was. I also enjoy working on my car and do it when ever I have something simple enough for me todo. This individual began to after I explained to him I was fixing my car that I was wasting their time and money and that they made no money off of diagnosis. I understand when they diagnose my car they want me to fix it there but being a college student I have to sometimes shop around and see what is the most affordable option. that means when a get a diagnosis I might not be able to afford to fix my car their. Being in this circumstance was completely disregarded. He also went on how I got my timing belt diagnosed and fixed somewhere else. the fact was I never asked anyone to look at the timing belt. I was there for a vacuum leak that the did very good at fixing. When they told me how bad the belt was I had to go ahead and see if I could replace the belt my self. They quoted me $800 to fix that. My home mechanic quoted me $100 less at $700 but they said it go could up if one of the oil seals need to be replaced along that area. That's when I decided to fix if my self since I didn't have that much to fix that. So when I went up to the shop today to get my car fixed just to find out they couldn't do it because they refused to I was quite up happy. I have found this experience to be the worst in all the mechanics I have done business with or any customer experience. I felt there was a complete disregard for the customers personal circumstance. as well It feels as though they demand they must know your life story in order to understand why you are there. Most mechanics could care less. As long as you pay which I have done would expect myself to do every time. I have never yelled at them cussed at them or shown any other signs of disgust or disrespect. This was a completely inappropriate transaction. read more

This fellow is phenomenal, I am driving across the country with my Volvo and I needed a simple part. There was no VOLVO dealer nearby so I went to AUDI, VOLKS and a few auto parts stores, no one could help me. This Auto Service shop could and they didn't even charge me. It was a part for the windshield wipers to deliver the windshield wiper fluid. He was done in less than 10 minutes. The shop was spotless, they offered pop and water. Ive used Ricks as my primary auto repair for both of my vehicles for 12 years. Rick operates his business with integrity, and his service manager Jeremy is really great to work with. I cannot thank them enough for the fantastic job they have done keeping my family safe, and our cars on the road for a fair price. Our SUV's battery kept dying, and we weren't quite sure if it was simply the battery was worn out or if there was something that was continually drawing amps from it, unbeknownst to us. Rather than just doing the obvious ~ replacing the battery ~ Rod & crew ran a series of tests to confirm what the problem actually was. After a very bad experience with another auto repair shop in town, we decided to give Rick's a try. We've used them several times for two cars (we have two very old cars), and have been nothing but pleased. What we most appreciate is that they've always been honest, even when it's meant telling us that a repair wasn't urgent. They've gone out of their way to help us (applying a discount that we didn't know was available, for instance). They're always friendly and a pleasure to deal with. I don't think they're the cheapest auto repair, but their prices aren't unreasonable, they come with a guarantee, and their honesty about what actually needs to be done is worth a lot. Took my car (2012 Chevy Impala) in for a rough idle and a wiring problem with blower motor. He had the car all day. When he finally called he listed numerous problems with the car and said it would cost over $6000.00 to repair. When he was told that the cost he quoted was excessive, he than charged me $99.00 for a diagnostic fee, while doing absolutely nothing to repair the problems I brought the car in for. I wouldn't suggest this auto repair place to my worst enemy. Don't waste your time or money with these people. Oh, and to put the icing on the cake, when my daughter went to pick up the car they had already left, not leaving the ignition key for her to leave in her car. She had to call these people for over 30 minutes before they finally answered making her late to pick up her son from school. read more

Its nice having a mechanic like the old days, they know what their doing for a fair price. My starter went out they replaced it, but it went out again they had to tow it and replace with a third starter, but it keep engaging, so they narrowed it down to the power cable had bare wire. they replaced it, put it a new starter, did not charge me for the tow or the new cable. Where do I start? This place we so amazing. I just want to thank Rick and all of his staff for all of their kindness shown towards me. When I came in to see what was wrong with my car Jeremy told me that my transmission was going out and my repairs would be pricey. I told him I needed to make a phone call. When I came back in from my phone call I said, "I am sorry, but I can't get my car fixed right now because I can't afford it." I said what do I owe you today for the estimation? He said, "Rick says it is $35, but I will take care of it for you." I was so shocked and said, "Are you sure? I can pay for it." He said no it is okay then gave me a rose and my car keys. He also told me about their used car inspection if I was planning on getting a new vehicle. I was so blessed by his kindness and it made leaving their with bad news about my car way better. Also another employee helped me after they were closed because I left something important in their loaner car. He didn't have to help me because they were closed, but choose to anyways with a huge smile on his face. I will definitely be choosing Rick's again. Thank you! read more

The service here is TERRIBLE. I went in after being on the road with some car troubles an he wanted to do this 90 dollar test to tell me what was wrong with the car I declined and asked just for a tune up with a change of spark plugs he was pretty rude about it and did the tune up. I finally arrived to DC and took my car to jiffy lube for an oil change the guy there pointed out it was a small elbow hose something that ricks auto could have found considering it's right there. Rick is a complete tool and I would recommend you go elsewhere and save your time. Worst experience with a mechanic EVER! Drive a few miles and find another place. read more

I have had nothing but problems with this place after the first time I went. I took my car their originally to get my timing belt changed and to check if anything was wrong with my engine so that if my engine did have any outstanding problems I could just buy a new van instead of paying thousands of dollars to fix it. When I took it in the first time I paid around $2700 for the updates and timing belt which I thought would fix my check engine light. But an hour of driving later after getting the car back, the light came back on and I had to take it back for them to tell me it was the catalytic converter, and it wouldn't be that big of a problem if I didn't want to get it fixed. Then a few weeks later the light was still on and I noticed that they didn't put my engine cover back on. So I had to take it back again to get it checked and to get my cover back, and they just flushed my oil that time. Then just a couple weeks later after that visit my car completely shut down on me and I had to have it towed to my previous auto shop(Perry automotive) because it was closer than Rick's. Perry's took a look and said my engine would need to be completely replaced and that the timing belt that Rick's put in was faulty. So thanks to Rick's auto I paid $3000 in repairs for a car that just broke down weeks later. When I could have just bought a new car. read more

This place is a FRAUD. I went here initially for an oil change deal they were having. They did an entire check of my car (e.g. fluids) and the owner came back with an itemized list of $1,300 of things that needed fixed immediately for safety (e.g. steering rack, hose, alignment), $1,100 of things that needed fixed within a month, and another $400 of things that weren't top priority but needed fixed within 3 months. He said there was good news though - he had the parts to do all of these today and I could pay for a rental until they were finished. I told him it would be cheaper to buy an new car and he lectured me on how proper maintenance is always cheaper than a new car. I declined and he gave me a rose which is in itself bizarre. Interestingly my service engine light came on as soon as I left the shop too. I went to my normal mechanic and he found NOTHING wrong with my car, nothing, nothing. This was over 6 months ago and I still receive emails from ol' Rick Thomas trying to lure me in, following up about recommended repairs and service changes due. Please do not go here read more

Rick's has been our car shop for over 6 years now. We chose them based on a recommendation from friends, and we've never once regretted it. The people at Rick's have been completely competent, including being competent to tell us when something is beyond or outside of what they can do. They've sent us to the Honda dealer with our 2005 Odyssey for certain things, when needed. Most of the time, though, they've been able to fix everything, and do it quickly, efficiently, and thoroughly. A couple of times we've had to go back to have something adjusted after the car was fixed, which is expected; in these cases they have always been available immediately to complete the repair and have never imposed unfair extra charges--usually there is no charge at all. Beyond being good at fixing cars (and honest about when the cars actually need them to do the fixing), I think they truly understand the needs of families, and they feel responsible for providing supportive service. We always have to rely on free loaner vehicles from Rick's to drive our kids around when our car is in the shop. Some of the loaners smell a little smoky, but apart from that, they're just fine. The people at Rick's also go out of their way to be helpful. Here's an example: Last week we took our Odyssey in to Rick's. After taking a look at it, Jeremy broke the news that it was in need of major repairs, costing several thousand dollars. We decided to opt out of the repairs and buy a new (used) car instead because of the high mileage on the car. Note: This decision did not benefit Rick's financially, as repairing the car would have done. But Jeremy put the car back together, charged us a very reasonable fee (because they had done some minor work on the car as they were diagnosing it, such as refilling the power steering fluid), and then actually helped us prep it to sell, for no extra charge. He removed our trailer hitch and bike rack for us, filled the tires, and took off the roof rack crossbars, which had frozen onto the car--all for free. He also gave us his time and attention, far beyond what was required of him, when we asked him for advice about the sale of our car and the one we were looking at buying. Rick's allowed us to keep their loaner vehicle for an extra day because we were in a difficult situation as we looked for a new car. They then allowed us to keep our broken car in their lot for an additional day, as we cleaned it out. This was like having a friend or family member who owns a car shop, someone who uses his knowledge and resources to help you solve problems. It was amazing. I think the best evidence of the good service at Rick's is that we don't see them all that often because our cars are usually working just fine--a good sign in itself. But when we do, we always come out feeling relieved that we went to Rick's. This place represents the best of what local business can give you: it's a business that takes full responsibility for the quality of its work and offers reliable, supportive service to maintain long-term relationships with clients. read more
