Rick & Ann's was such a good idea. Tucked away in an urban oasis, Rick & Ann's is a fantastic café serving home style brunch. I came on a Sunday afternoon with a friend, and we waited about 20-30 mins for a table. There's a Peets and a few cute shops nearby so the time went by quickly! When I walked in, I pretty much wanted to order everything on everyone's plate... everything looked amazing. I decided on the Fun Guy Omelete, whose name I finally understood and laughed at later after realizing it was an omelette full of mushrooms. My friend got a plate with the Red Flannel hash (beets, potato, bacon) -- totally unique and delicious. And we got 2 iced coffees to complete our order! We left full and with leftovers. Besides the fact that it makes you feel like a suspect, there's no sitting down, reading the menu, chatting, ordering, eating, maybe ordering some more. Not idea who came up with this but it's BAD. Ahhhh... Finally back on the yelps. I feel like it's been awhile since I've done a review. Part of the reason for the short hiatus is that i've been trying to lose weight. One lovely morning after taking a break from my diet, my awesome girlfriend decides to take me to breakfast. I had been craving some real good breakfast too; especially after eating Oatmeal every morning... We arrive in Berkeley. Like the really really nice side of Berkeley. You know the part I am talking about. It's the area where that nice ass Claremont(sp?) Hotel is. I had no idea where we were going at the time. My poor girl was making laps around the blocks and going up and down neighborhoods trying to find parking. So long story short, the parking here sucks. Good luck on this part. Luckily we got lucky and snagged something right when someone was leaving which put us right across the street from the place. Meters. Credit Card. Win. When we got there we were told there was a 10-15 minute wait and we waited the same amount of time before being seated. After getting to our table my girlfriend told me that this place can have long waits so we were lucky. She also mentioned that this place was recommended to her by a friend. She also also mentioned that a certain basketball player named Steph Curry comes to this place. More reason to have to try this place out, I thought! But what started with excitement, ended with a slight let down. Don't get me wrong. Service was great. Prices were decent. But the food just didn't seem too flavorful. I got the Buttermilk Pancakes which were just ok. When we get breakfast everyone once awhile I like to go back to the basics and get some nice traditional pancakes and the taste just wasn't there. If you are a fan of fluffy pancakes then you might enjoy these. But once you get to the taste...they are almost the equivalent of store bought/Bisquick pancakes you can just make yourself at home. It pains me to describe it that way but that's how I felt. Maybe I've just been spoiled with so many good places recently? My girl got the Midwest which is these Potato-Cheese Pancakes that come with a nicely cooked porkchop, 2 eggs, sour cream and apple sauce(which I had no idea up till that day that apolesauce with pork chops is a thing. Learned something new that day!). I love potatoes. I did not love these pancakes though. Everything aside from the pork chop seemed just bland...I also forgot to mention that I ordered Apple Juice and a side of home fries. I've been to Apple Hill and Brodericks Breakfast fries in Walnut Creek just both sing to my heart so it's just hard to have things of lower quality...I don't know man. I feel bad because I feel like it might be one of those times where maybe I just didn't order that right thing on the menu. I really don't feel like it's overhyped. However at the same time being a restaurant in Berkeley, I would expect you to have bomb ass food. If you don't have something out of the ordinary(Which Berkeley cuisine is known for sometimes), then I feel you have to have something traditional which is bomb. In this case being that Rick and Ann's falls in the latter scenario, they unfortunately didn't deliver. I discovered this place just walking by and became curious to know why his place is so filled! It must be good! So the following weekend I went with friends! On a Sunday around 10am, it was about a 45 minute wait for my group of 5. There's a huge waiting area with gifts to purchase and books to read. The staff is super friendly, ambiance was nice, and I was excited! Here's what I had: COFFEE - $2.75 Comes with my very own little creamer. Smooth and decent! Can't complain! ERICA'S FRENCH TOAST - $8.75 (Reg. stack) Challah bread dipped in orange-cardamom batter. This was SO good! Each slice (total of 3) was thick and creamy. You taste the orange-cardamom! I highly recommend his! DUCK CONFIT HASH - $16 Duck confit with crispy duck skin, potatoes, garlic, mushrooms, herbs and a touch of cream, served with two eggs and a scone. This was a special. Although the duck skin wasn't actually crispy, it was still tasty. There was plenty of mushroom and flavoring. It was delicious! As for the side of scone, the texture felt more like a muffin top. I tasted a lot of yummy herbs in that one. Overall this place was good! I had a great time here. Although you can tell it was busy, the staff was attentive and the service was exceptional. This is such a cute spot! Stumbled upon this restaurant while staying at hotel across the street. When entering, the hostess takes your order and you pay first. The menu has so many tasty choices. Gee, has it really been two decades since Rick and Ann opened their classic Alice Waters-style breakfast eatery a stone's throw from the Claremont? It's not a place I thought about much during all these years, but for some reason, I flashed upon a memory of it and came back after a dental appointment. It was pouring cats and dogs that Tuesday, so I was hoping the inclement weather would cut into the waiting line I had kinda expected. It didn't, and I was relegated to a counter seat next to the register. Alas, it's still a nice place, sturdy but clean craftsman-style with big French country tables in the middle. Typically Californian. In fact, the dishes are standard breakfast fare made over Californian-style. What I had was indeed a Californication of one of my faves, corned beef hash and eggs. They called the dish the North East, and for about ten bucks, I got a slab of red flannel hash with two eggs, sunny-side up, and sourdough toast (see photo). But what makes it very Californian is that the hash was made of red beets, sweet potatoes, new potatoes, red onion, and bacon bits. There wasn't a trace of Irish or Mary Kitchen in it. Nice try, but truth be told, it wasn't honestly satisfying in the East Coast, artery-clogging style that I like so much against my supposedly better judgment. The Californication was nothing but a tease to me, and I was worried the beets would dye my teeth just before I was facing the cameras on "Check Please! Bay Area". Fortunately they didn't. The best thing I had was the $4.25 Fruit Cup, which sounds pricey except it turned out to be quite an impressive floral-like display of fruit (see photo). Oh so Californian. FOOD - 3 stars...clean but not as cholesterol-filled savory as I was in the mood for...back to Denny's for me, I guess AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...still quite the magazine spread after all these years SERVICE - 3.5 stars...low-key and deferential in true organic fashion TOTAL - 3 stars...I think Rick and Ann serve the Berkeley granola/ Birkenstocks crowds quite well, the rest of us need to reach for Lipitor read more

Food was delicious, high quality ingredients, good flavors. Had the chorizo frittata. Love that you can get a scone or muffin instead of just toast. Cherry corn scone was great. Some people are hating on the ordering system, but honestly I liked it. Super efficient, works well, doesn't take away from the experience at all. Wow when my friends suggested we go here for brunch, I didn't realize what a hidden gem they were taking me to. We had a long wait since we were a big party (9), but the staff was really nice there and kept coming over to check on us. They have free coffee while you wait, and they have this ingenious app called TimeView which lets you view your wait time for restaurants. It's posted in the waiting area on an iPad, and was such a cool way for us to check that our names were still on the list! I ordered the egg scramble with lox and a bagel, which was healthy and delicious. The wording on their menu was weird (the lox comes with your choice of a bagel, cream cheese, cucumbers, etc.). No one could figure out what my choice was between a bagel and WHAT? But then the waitress explained it's my choice of what type of bagel. Duh. I have eaten here before and the food and service was amazing. I would give it five stars but for the attitude of the barista working here the morning of July 14th. This restaurant did not update their hours on google and showed it open. After driving half an hour and paying for parking we find out the restaurant is closed. When I mentioned it to The gentleman barista he should update his hours on google, he snapped back "other people have already made that observation, thank you! " in a very condescending tone and his overall attitude was LEAVE. No problem, especially because I brought new customers to your restaurant and we'll be going to La Note where we are not treated like an inconvenience to be disposed of. I could understand if I was rude with this person, but we were not. No excuse for this behavior. We won't be back. read more

I had the Midwest breakfast this morning. It had 2 cheesy/crispy potato-cheese pancakes, grilled tomatoes, house smoked pork chop and a side of apple sauce and sour cream. It's a pretty rich thing to eat early in the morning, but it really was worth it. Pork chops were good and not overpowered with smoke. I've never had pork chops with applesauce, but the combination worked. I can't really do dairy, but I had to try the potato-cheese pancakes. Super Cheesy in the middle and the potatoes were crispy, just the way I like them. This place is about 1/4 mile down hill from the Claremont. I got there a few minutes after they opened, on a Tuesday, so parking wasn't an issue. But I've heard the weekends can be a parking and line nightmare. I highly recommend this place if you're in the area. read more

This is a quaint, mom and pop kinda place. The food is savory, and they cater somewhat to the health-freak like me!! I ordered one of their 5 or so specialties, the Garden Omelette, filled with asparagus, spinach, tomatoes, etc. I asked if I could have the omelette without tomatoes, as nightshades make my belly go grrrr most the time, but the veggies are pre-mixed, said the server. Same with the beet hash: um, bacon? No thanks, didn't order that one. I went for the dairy-free option for the omelette, so no feta cheese for me. The chef was accommodating with this, phew! No probs. As a side dish, my eating partner and I split a basic order of the gluten-free, rice flour pancakes. How often can you order gluten-free pancakes?!!! We were psyched. And tasty to boot, with a hint of orange! Sure, they may be a bit dry for those used to buttermilk pancakes, but come on! This is a rare treat, and the slight, un-noticeable to us, dryness... this is easily healed with some pure maple syrup. I didn't even ask if these were dairy-free (a rare dose of blissful ignorance), though I was pleased that my delicious potatoes came without sour cream. Loved my brunch experience here! It was a 40-minute wait for a party of 2 on Sunday at 11:15 am. We sat at the community table, which is large table for ~ 16 or so. It gets a little hectic at times for the servers to figure out which party ordered what, but still -- I liked sitting at this large table. It felt cozy and more familial. We ordered the small stack of cornmeal pancakes, curry tofu scramble for me, and Good Guy Omelette for my friend. Portions were generous and hearty! My curry tofu scramble with spinach, mushroom, peppers, onions, and tofu were well-flavored. Even though it was something I could have made for myself, I like how they didn't skimp on any of the ingredients. The potatoes were yummy -- only found two burned bottoms. A little salt + pepper made the whole dish a solid 4/5. Rick & Ann's is tucked a bit away from the hubbub of downtown Berkeley and seems to attract a decent number of locals. This is our neighborhood restaurant that we go to for homey breakfasts or quick lunches. We ordered: tofu scramble - tofu marinated in a ginger, garlic, curry sauce then sautéed with mushrooms, spinach, bell peppers, and corn. It is served with home fries and toast. I just love that curry flavor!! We always order this, you won't find it on anyone else's menu. Eggplant polenta Napoleon - roasted eggplant, spinach, pesto, feta and roasted tomatoes layered on a polenta cake. Delicious!! A lot of umami flavors going on with some nice tang from the feta. I really wanted to meet Rick & Ann! They seem like lovely people. I'd heard good things about this place, and since Mom was in town (and she loves her some healthy-local-sustainable foodstuffs) I brought her here for dinner. We shared the roasted beet & fennel salad with baby lettuce, roasted beets, fennel, goat cheese, pecans & sherry-mustard vinaigrette. Lots of lettuce, less... other stuff. This is my beef with fancy salads: don't you order them not for the lettuce, but for the Other Stuff?? We also shared 2 main dishes: the special, a linguine with mushrooms, broccoli, asparagus, bacon & parmesan cheese; and the roasted portobello eggplant burger. The special was very good - al dente pasta, great combo of flavors - but the portobello eggplant burger was terribly boring. It's literally a mushroom on top of a slice of eggplant on a bun with some pesto sauce. The menu boasted that the buns are homemade, and I'm a *sucker* for homemade bread, but it honestly tasted like your regular, run-of-the-mill, spongy white bread bun. Disappointing. We loved the cozy ambiance, and decided to stay for dessert & tea. We tried the giant, multi-tiered carrot cake teasing us from the kitchen counter, and a slice of apple pie. I feel awful slandering baked goods, as they are near and dear to my heart, but neither cake was worth the splurge (gasp!!). The carrot cake was overly sweet; the apple pie was dense and dry. Our waitress informed us that desserts are specially made by a local pastry chef, which of course made me feel even more guilty for not adoring them, but for me to leave *anything* with sugar untouched is cause for alarm. I found the food taste less I had to add salt and pepper on both omelet and potatoes . But the cherry on top of it all is me getting a piece of corn on my plate ... when there shouldn't be . Came here for breakfast with a friend since he wanted to try the place. It's right across from Claremont hotel and is a place i've definitely overlooked because it's a little hidden. When we walked in we were seated right away which was a plus considering the time that we came in. The server came to our table really quickly and got our order in in no time. I ordered the North East and my friend ordered the Down South. I got the scone on my side and really enjoyed the dish. The hash was unique since i've never had a beet hash before and I didn't expect it to work as well as it did. It paired really well with the eggs/scone. I could only eat half of my dish since it was so filling. Tried a bit of my friend's dish too and it wasn't too different from other corneal pancakes that you'd find at other places, but he seemed to enjoy it. Still yummy after all these years, and walking distance from my hotel. Yay! Rick & Ann's is very popular, but there is a reason for that. The pancakes, waffles, and egg dishes are all pretty darn good. And, after living in Sydney for a while, I forgot about the HUGE portions (at a fraction of the cost, as well). Massive plate of pumpkin pancakes plus coffee = $10. And I couldn't even come close to finishing those pancakes, no matter how delicious they were. I also really love the way they do their potatoes. And, in the past, I have had several lunch items here as well, but it's been too long for me to comment on that. But, the traditional Rick & Ann's meal is and always will be breakfast. That's what they made their name on. Now, the lines are long on the weekends. Really long. And it's a small space. Here's a tip: come by yourself or just one other person and ask to eat at the Community Table. I actually prefer eating at this table myself, and it will cut your wait time down considerably. read more

I've always enjoyed the food at this restaurant and over the years the staff has become kinder. Today they did something that made me so overwhelming happy. In this COVID crazy time, when restaurants are open less and having trouble keeping good staff and putting time limits on customers being there for a meal, I had breakfast w/ a friend I rarely see. She's had a tough time with COVID isolation. We sat and chatted for two hours, couldn't believe it. The staff offered more coffee from time to time and didn't rush us even though we sat there for awhile. This place made my weekend! My friends and I came in around 1:30pm and were seated immediately. I ordered the North East which was quite heavy. It comes with a muffin which can be blueberry or English or maybe something else! I got the blueberry muffin which was quite dry on the outside but still decent. The hash is the best part because it's quite healthy (but also not) because it has bacon, beetroot, and potatoes combined. Go figure! But what will make me come back is the Erica's French Toast which was the best. I've never had French toast that was a mix of bread but when you cut into it, taste like the cream of creme brûlée! It has orange and cardamom hints to it too! For two people, I think it's ideally a family style that has the French toast and one of the favorites. Yum-myyyy! read more

I finally made it to Rick & Ann's last Saturday. I love the area, very cute and quaint. The host quoted us about 25 minutes and we luckily got sat within 15 minutes. I ordered the Doc's Delight with bacon instead of sausage. The bacon was really soft, wish I asked for it to be crispy. A little disappointed with the waffle. It was big but very thin and a bit flavorless. My over easy eggs were cooked perfectly. The side of home fries come with grilled onions. If you don't like onions then make sure you tell them beforehand because it does not state that on the menu! The potatoes needed a lot more seasoning. They were cooked well but lacked salt and pepper. Their French toast was the best part. The challah bread was soft but not eggy. The hint of orange was a great touch. It didn't need to be drenched in syrup to taste good. Overall, it was OK but not great. read more

Wait for our party of 4 for Saturday brunch = 1.5 hours. Wait for food after ordering = 40 mins. Worth it? I would say so. I ordered one of their specials- The Greek Omelet. It was stuffed to the max with mushrooms, artichoke hearts, sundried tomatoes, spinach and provolone cheese. Mmmm...with a side of potatoes, and buttered wheat toast. It was definitely filling! On top of that, I shared a short stack of whole wheat pancakes with my friend. Everyone else at our table had delicious plates as well, ranging from scrambled eggs and lox to orange-cardamom French toast! I was very satisfied with our Brunch. Thank goodness because after waiting for nearly 2 hours for it, I would have been pissed off if it was shitty. Minus 1 for the long wait though.
