I want to begin by acknowledging the challenges teachers and school staff face. I appreciate their…read moreefforts and understand that working with students is not always easy. However, my concern lies not with the educators broadly, but specifically with the treatment my child received from a counselor at the school. Do not register your child at this school and if you do stay on top of their counselors and teachers and speak up for your child. Had I been aware sooner of the internal emotional and mental struggle my child endured due to this counselor's behavior, I would have addressed it much earlier. Teenagers often don't speak up about these kinds of issues, as they are navigating their own challenges, so I do not blame my child for remaining silent. That said, I strongly believe the school must carefully consider who it hires for such crucial roles. It's essential to thoroughly vet candidates and not simply hire based on tenure, connections, or convenience. This ensures that students receive the support and encouragement they deserve. I am specifically referring to Michelle Parizeau, who, in my experience, has been detrimental to my child's well-being. During the few meetings I attended regarding my child's progress and scheduling, I was struck by her apparent lack of empathy and dismissive attitude towards both me and my child. It felt as though Ms. Parizeau held herself in high regard but showed little regard for the needs or feelings of the students she is meant to support. On multiple occasions, my child shared with me that Ms. Parizeau told her she would never graduate, would not amount to anything, and would need to attend community college instead of a four-year institution. These statements were not only discouraging but deeply damaging. Despite these negative messages, my child graduated on time, earned extra credits, and is now attending college. Teachers and counselors should motivate and uplift students, not tear them down or diminish their potential. The lasting impact of Ms. Parizeau's behavior has been so severe that my child is in therapy sinc she finally started telling me about what really happened and struggles to even talk about her high school experience. I am not surprised they painted the entire campus in prison-like colors--because that's exactly how the students are treated. The atmosphere feels punitive and unwelcoming, which only adds to the stress and challenges students face. This environment is far from what a supportive and nurturing school should provide. I urge the school to thoroughly review appropriate action to ensure that no other student has to endure such harmful treatment in the future.

Students deserve respect, especially in an educational environment. It is concerning that individuals who choose to work with students act in this manner. If staff are unhappy working with kids, they should not be in this profession. This behavior reflects poorly on the school. I'm truly surprised this behavior is tolerated. In particular, the blonde, curly-haired staff member is so rude and should do better and maybe rethink her profession.

The faculty and administration are clued in to their students in supportive strategies that work academically as well as inter-personally. Adults model what they're requiring re:students ' behavior. Love that this Charter School requires uniforms. Love that their cafeteria prepares fresh, locally sourced food to the students every single day. Genius! Loving that all this is coming from the once embattled OUSD-what a complete turnaround for the better, in the past 15-20 years. All the fundamentals are working together for the greater good at Santiago Charter Middle School. Grateful, grateful, grateful. AND...they still have room for new students.

When you visit the campus, you will immediately notice the caring atmosphere because every staff member is amazing (shoutout to Dr. D and Mrs. Pedroza, co principals, for giving this school the big heart that it has)!! If you're on the fence, give them a chance by attending one of the campus events to hear what they have to offer and what sets them apart from other schools. For example, how many middle schools offer international travel opportunities? My daughter went on a 10+ day trip to Europe and made wonderful memories with her friends. Again, this school has it all (including pre-AP!) and so many parents I've talked to all agree it was amazing for each of their kids. No regrets!
