Instead of the teacher helping him make friends, they made him out to seem like the troubled kid. My 5 year old said he left us classroom because "he just wanted to make a friend but everyone is mean to him." They don't give consequences to the kids that were teasing him or hurting him or talked to the parents. My son got yelled to " get the Fuck out of here" BY A FIVE YEAR OLD as soon as he got to school and hit with a hula hoop and no one did anything about it. When my son left his class room randomly and was so upset ,NO ONE called me. This all happened week one of school starting by the way.... And we had to pull him out already. When you visit the campus, you will immediately notice the caring atmosphere because every staff member is amazing (shoutout to Dr. D and Mrs. Pedroza, co principals, for giving this school the big heart that it has)!! If you're on the fence, give them a chance by attending one of the campus events to hear what they have to offer and what sets them apart from other schools. For example, how many middle schools offer international travel opportunities? My daughter went on a 10+ day trip to Europe and made wonderful memories with her friends. Again, this school has it all (including pre-AP!) and so many parents I've talked to all agree it was amazing for each of their kids. No regrets!

Instead of helping resolve scheduling issues, students were left in situations where they had to drop classes or arrive late. Parents should be able to expect clear communication and support from school administration, especially when scheduling directly affects a student's education. I hope the school takes this concern seriously and works to improve communication and support for both students and parents.

The Open School has been life changing for my son and our family…read more The school's model is unique - in a democratic school, children have true ownership over their education and are free (and supported!) to pursue their own interests. Additionally, the students are active participants in the running of the school. Planning field trips, voting on changes to the school rules, and serving on the school's "civics board" to hold each other accountable when rules are broken or conflicts arise are all integral parts of a child's experience here. (And you'd be surprised how involved your child can be at such a young age!) The school staff are incredibly nurturing and take time to get to know each student and family individually. The mixed-age environment means the children learn from each other and how to cooperate in a community. My son started school last year at six years old, and we've seen incredible growth in his sense of self-responsibility and confidence. He is also enthusiastic about learning as it is seen as natural rather than "forced" upon him. Most importantly, my son wakes up every morning excited and happy to go to school. It is incredible to see the learning, independence, problem solving skills and mental wellness that follows when you do not dictate to students a specific set of curriculum or a rigid schedule. I cannot emphasize enough how thankful I am that we found The Open School.
