When I told her I was going to seek outside tutoring she said and I quote: "You don't need any outside tutoring---all you need to do is pay better attention in my class." The problem? She did an abysmal job at explaining and teaching. Rude and totally out of touch.

Caring, thoughtful, beehive of activity…read more The students I met are friendly, super helpful, I discovered when we attended registration, and this place FEELS like a private school, with the attitude of "We're all in this, together." The faculty and administration are clued in to their students in supportive strategies that work academically as well as inter-personally. Adults model what they're requiring re:students ' behavior. Love that this Charter School requires uniforms. Love that their cafeteria prepares fresh, locally sourced food to the students every single day. Genius! Loving that all this is coming from the once embattled OUSD-what a complete turnaround for the better, in the past 15-20 years. All the fundamentals are working together for the greater good at Santiago Charter Middle School. Grateful, grateful, grateful. AND...they still have room for new students.

When you visit the campus, you will immediately notice the caring atmosphere because every staff member is amazing (shoutout to Dr. D and Mrs. Pedroza, co principals, for giving this school the big heart that it has)!! If you're on the fence, give them a chance by attending one of the campus events to hear what they have to offer and what sets them apart from other schools. For example, how many middle schools offer international travel opportunities? My daughter went on a 10+ day trip to Europe and made wonderful memories with her friends. Again, this school has it all (including pre-AP!) and so many parents I've talked to all agree it was amazing for each of their kids. No regrets!

It is a particularly exciting time on campus as the school has just moved into it's new location and the campus is in full bloom! Students are supported in their journey by founder and Executive Agent Cassi, as well as the highly involved staff who are knowledgable about student-led education and passionate about keeping students safe and engaged.

Additionally, the students are active participants in the running of the school. Planning field trips, voting on changes to the school rules, and serving on the school's "civics board" to hold each other accountable when rules are broken or conflicts arise are all integral parts of a child's experience here. (And you'd be surprised how involved your child can be at such a young age!) The school staff are incredibly nurturing and take time to get to know each student and family individually. The mixed-age environment means the children learn from each other and how to cooperate in a community. My son started school last year at six years old, and we've seen incredible growth in his sense of self-responsibility and confidence. He is also enthusiastic about learning as it is seen as natural rather than "forced" upon him. Most importantly, my son wakes up every morning excited and happy to go to school. It is incredible to see the learning, independence, problem solving skills and mental wellness that follows when you do not dictate to students a specific set of curriculum or a rigid schedule. I cannot emphasize enough how thankful I am that we found The Open School.
