This review is regarding our free estimate…read more We had seen the kiosk at Sam's club advertising free estimates on household services and repairs and had previously been told by a friend that our siding would probably need to be replaced within 5 years due to an issue we were experiencing. We figured it would be a good idea to get a quote and find out how much of an expense we're looking at so we could start setting aside some money. I got a little scared when not only did we get two confirmation calls, but also a third 'day before' reminder call where the caller then transfered me to a manager to double confirm. I had to promise that both homeowners would be present. No surprise that our discomfort increased with each call. We were ready for a HARD SELL, but let me tell you.... it never came. Nathaniel called to tell us when he was on the way and asked if it would be OK to show up a little earlier than our appointment time. Sure thing. Thanks for asking. He was very polite and also told us what kind of vehicle he would arrive in so we would know it was him at the door. When he arrived he did a walk around the house with us to hear our concerns. He explained that the issue we'd been having was NOT at all related to our siding and that it's an easy fix for a handyman, and in fact too small of a job for Alenco. He then proceeded to give us a masterclass on siding and explain exactly what kind we had, what maintenance (things like caulking) we ought to be doing and how frequently. He also told us we would get another 25+ years out of our siding if it was upkept. Guys, we're newbies here. He could totally have told us a tall tale and suckered us into some huge expense we didn't need. He was so nice, and never once gave us even a hint of attitude that we had wasted his time. Ordered a custom front door and fairly standard windows; windows are (seemingly) OK. The door…read morehowever is where the issue resides. We asked for a 36" door and sidelights, one that we told the salesman that we ourselves would get a standard size storm door of our choosing from the local home improvement store and install ourselves. The measurements for the custom door system were made by their technician. Several weeks later we receive a phone call from Alenco saying that the manufacturer of the door system wouldn't be able to make the door system as requested per the measured opening. We were asked if it would be ok if the door could be made smaller to keep the sidelights. "Yes", was our response. No mention at the time on what size the new door would be. Why weren't correct measurements and double checks made initially to save time, confusion and hassle? More than a month past the initial estimated install time the door was ready to be installed. After the install was done by Alenco, we started to looking at storm doors. However, the required width measurements of the installed door frame needed for a standard storm door did not fit any manufacturer of storm doors that we found at retail. The framed opening was too large for a 32" storm door and too small for a 34" storm door. We called Alenco and told them about the storm door sizing issue. Their confused response, according to their paperwork, was that they installed a 35" door. THEY INSTALLED A 33.5" DOOR. After several back and forth phone calls with various people at the company, no one can explain how their paperwork says 35", yet we have a 33.5" door!! Best they could offer was a "good deal" on a custom storm door FROM THEM that was more expensive than what we should have been able to buy from a store. We refused to spend more money with them after all of this of course. To top it all off, several feet of the installed flashing around the door weren't caulked properly, or at all, and other gaps remained. One gap, a "manufacturer defect", was wide enough for two stacked credit cards to fit in, ruining the look of the surrounding material. Several nail heads holding the flashing on weren't flat with the material as well; sticking proud of the flashing. These cosmetic issues were fixed to some degree of satisfaction. We would not use this company again for ANY work.

There was one group that installed the actual windows and another separate group to install the woodwork around the outside and inside. We had wood blinds at all the windows and they took them down in order to install the windows but told us they couldn't rehang them. That isn't their job. It was apparently our responsibility to get them rehung. It definitely wasn't communicated at all that they wouldn't make the windows look whole; exactly the same as the original windows.

The installation of 2 french doors, 2 sets of casement windows and a small kitchen sink window that was to take 3 days to complete resulted in 3 months and 2 days of scheduling nightmares and blunders of workmanship. The sales rep and carpenter installer were present in our home when a beginning date was set. A week early the coordinator called to say they would start the next day which we agreed to. As things progressed, painters were not ready and then the installer had booked the same date elsewhere which meant we were bumped back, one of many to follow. Below is a list of errors during the installation once it finally began approximately 1 month later. Pictures to follow. *End of third day of installation, installers noted 1 sash was dented, weather stripping was short on 1 french door and short 2 pieces of casing trim on a door. Screen door handle was installed backwards. Installers stated all were to be taken care. *Couple days after the first install attempt, we noticed almost all of the casings had streaks in the stain where there was starting and stopping spray marks. 8 pieces in all were to be replaced. *Strips of wood in framing on exterior between window casings were left unstained and sealed, exposed to weather. * When sash was replaced it was replaced with an 18 pane instead of the original 6 pane. Weather stripping brought was not right length so no attempt to replace that day. *Kitchen sink window was not built up and supported with framing and barely hanging on with thin finish nails with large gaps between the trim and existing frame. *When attempting to replace 8 botched stained casings, the installer framed 2 small, Non-Pella windows that were to be completely covered with new kitchen cabinets. The original 8 defective stained pieces remained intact. When trimming the last french door of the 2 missing pieces, mitered corners had spacings revealing the wallpaper behind and unstained cut edges. Still no replacement for weather stripping on french door. After numerous rescheduling all work was completed. Two letters were written in which we detailed all the above to Pella, stating our frustration and that there should be some sort of compensation for the $24,000.00 requested, paid in full amount at contract signing. There first response was offering $100 gift card in which we had already made it clear that we were not using Pella again. We originally agreed to $1,000 but we were asked to sign a Good Will Agreement stating we would not post any comments on social media and the document was unclear as to whether any warranty of products or installation would be honored. Upon speaking to a lawyer, he advised not to sign and that we were not requesting enough, without mentioning any compensatory damages for lost work or rescheduling of our other contractors. We rejected their final offer of $1,000 and choose to send as many negative reviews as we can, warning other consumers of Pella of Lenexa.
