I have been going to Dr. DiGioia for about 2 1/2 years, since my previous wonderful doc -- Samuel Dotson -- retired from private practice.
On the verge more than once of looking for a replacement. Wanting a gay doc limits the field of options, and medicine is pretty universally bad in the U.S. anyway.
Dr. DiGioia runs hot and cold. Some days he is friendly, some days he will listen, some days the wait time is 5 minutes. But a majority of time it's the extreme opposite. Mostly, he doesn't listen, and is one of those docs that fires questions and then hands you a prescription delivering (little to) no explanation.
On two occasions I have been ushered into the exam room and then completely forgotten about. (I know this, because I overheard his handlers remind him repeatedly).
He does not listen. After asking "What are you here for?" he launches into a barrage of questions without hearing more than a fifth of the description of what I'm there for. By the time he winds down to a stopping point where I can tell him the next related symptom, he has already issued a prescription and is trying to get out the door.
He does not remember from one meeting to the next what the issues are...and considering problems can be ongoing and interrelated, that is a real concern. He even forgot the prescriptions, between meetings, and sometimes contradicts his own remarks from one meeting to the next.
He discounts my personal observations of what's going on in my own body, as well as concerns and questions I raise based in my own reading between meetings.
And, since he does not listen, he frequently asks questions I already provided the answer to, five sentences back. He is clearly a knowledgeable doctor, but I get no sense of caring or empathy from a doctor who doesn't really listen.
I also distrust any doctor who issues a prescription without first identifying the actual cause of the problem.
Two separate years I have gone to him for flu-like symptoms, with headaches, dry cough, and terrible pain in the solar plexus and ribs...and his prescription was for cough medicine and a chest X-ray.
That reminds me: he NEVER calls to notify of test results. NEVER.
I cannot recommend him. read more
