I'm very disappointed with the customer service I received during a recent consultation with Rice Glass. Jordan (JJ) came to my home to measure windows for replacement. At the start of the visit, I explained that I wanted measurements and pricing for individual windows so I could decide which ones to replace. His first response was, "Why did they send me out here if you're not even sure you're going to replace them?" -- which immediately set an unprofessional tone. We discussed replacing a window located within a rock exterior wall. A reputable builder had previously told me that replacing the entire window could be difficult and expensive because of the surrounding stonework. Jordan dismissed this concern and said the rock would not need to be touched. Since this conflicted with what I had been told before, I asked him to provide pricing for both approaches so I could compare options. He measured all the windows and later sent a total estimate. When I asked for the pricing to be broken down by window so I could make decisions, Jordan refused and said he would have to charge more to do that. This made it difficult to evaluate the project in stages, which was my original intent. There was also confusion about whether pricing for the window in the rock wall had been included. Jordan insisted I had told him not to quote it, which I did not. The conversation became unnecessarily argumentative instead of solution-focused. Additionally, I had to provide my email address three separate times because it was not written down correctly, which added to the frustration and made the interaction feel disorganized. When I called the office to resolve the issue, I was initially unable to speak with anyone else because Jordan answered the phone again. When I was finally transferred, the person I spoke with said he did not want to do business with me because Jordan had told him I had cursed him out -- even though he had not heard the conversation himself. The call ended with him hanging up on me. I also asked whether the company would guarantee against leaks if the window in the rock wall were replaced. I was told no guarantee could be provided. Overall, the interaction felt dismissive, disorganized, and unprofessional. I was simply trying to gather information and pricing so I could move forward with the project. This family owned company is everything you would want. If you call an actual human (and probably a member of the Rice family) will answer the phone & solve your problem. 8 years ago, they were the glass contractor for a primary bath remodel. Then we added to their job & they repaired several windows that seals were blown. Today we stopped by to get a new edge seal for the 7 foot custom shower. We moved into our two-bedroom apartment in Chapel Hill on June 8th. I immediately noticed some foggy windows. This is a common problem with cheap and/or old windows. The seals fail, condensation builds, and what not. I reported this to the apartment complex's maintenance team, same day, and they got in touch with their go-to window company, Rice's Glass, headquartered in nearby Carrboro. This is a family owned and operated business that's been around since 1959. If they've been in business this long, they must be doing something right. On June 26th, 18 days later, I happened to be home when Tommy of Rice's Glass knocked on our door. He was a polite, soft-spoken, older gentleman. He was courteous and wore a mask. Several contractors who have walked into and out of our apartment in recent weeks haven't worn masks, but Tommy did. I showed Tommy the windows I wanted replaced. He stuck little round stickers that said "Rice's Glass" on those windows. He also took measurements. He was very quick and efficient and knew exactly what to do. He said they'd have to order the windows and it would probably be a couple weeks. Well, they ended up replacing the windows on July 7th, 11 days later. Neither my wife nor I were home and we never received notice from Rice's Glass nor our apartment complex that they'd be coming on that day (nor did we receive notice of their initial visit on June 26th). While it wasn't a big deal and ultimately didn't bother us, it would have been nice if we were given a heads up of when Rice's Glass was visiting. My wife returned home from work on the 7th and noticed that the door to my home office, which she had shut completely, was ajar. It startled her. When she looked in my home office, she noticed some windows had been replaced. The new windows look great. They're brand new and crystal clear. They make our home look that much nicer. We love opening our blinds during the day and letting natural light in, so high quality windows are important to us and these were just that. In the end, Rice's Glass did a great job and we are very happy with the result. If you're looking for a good glass/window company in the Triangle area, you should certainly consider Rice's Glass. read more

I hired Rice to install a glass panel in a newly constructed shower. Somehow, due to a mixup in communications, they installed the wrong size. I have to hand it to them, when I pointed this out, they replaced it quickly with the correct size panel and did a marvelous job. The salespereson came to my house to take a look. He said everything looked fine. Today is a rainy day and I'm watching water dripping down the INSIDE of these windows. We had a broken window pane in our garage door. It was an odd size and the two "home stores" I previously went to either couldn't cut the glass to size or didn't have glass at all. Fortunately Rice Glass was able to save the day. I happened to call them just as they were closing and they took the time to take my order and said it would be ready by the afternoon of the next day. The next day I realized that I needed the glass to be an 1/8th inch smaller. I quickly called and I was advised that they would take care of it. I've used Rice's Glass for custom shower enclosures at three homes. They really do a wonderful job and stand by their products. On my current shower enclosure, installed three years ago, the handle was loose due to a missing washer. I emailed and they told me to stop by for a new washer and a screw. Instead of giving me those small items, they gave me a brand new back-to-back shower door handle! One cannot ask for better customer care! We have a tiny vintage camper (1966) with Jalousie windows and one pane needed to be replaced. After calling 8-10 other glass companies and getting zero interest in even attempting to repair or replace the glass, we were getting worried that we'd have it wrapped in saran wrap indefinitely. None of the other companies knew what these windows were or were even interested in trying to help. Rice's came highly recommended by a friend & I called them as we pulled the camper heading out to camp for the weekend. They knew the window (without me telling them anything other than old camper), said they could easily fix it & that they were only a few miles off of I-40. We decided to make the detour in see if they could actually fix it. We waited for the owner to take a look & he gave us an acceptable estimate to fix it, mostly the minimum labor charge. Then, he helped fix it HIMSELF! Could not have possibly been nicer or more sincere. We were out of there within less than a half hour (and they were busy on phones and with customers). It was an easy fix, and he charged even less than the estimate since it had taken so little time to replace. WE WERE THRILLED to have found this place!!! I would not hesitate to recommend them to others or to use them again. The owner cares deeply about his reputation and the reviews his business receives. They refused (and they literally refused) to come out and see the bathroom until everything was 100% completed. My contractor had stopped using them because of frequent call back for poor installations on their jobs. I did not trust them to fix it after speaking with the unprofessional owner. The other company we hired showed us how the doors were installed improperly using shims to fix miss cuts and were they glass sanded the edges they chipped it during install. Very frustrated with this place. It took my handyman and me 3 weeks with repeated calling to get someone to come out and give us an estimate on windows and a leaky shower. Chad finally came out and was polite and apologetic in person, offering to bring us a new shower seal at no charge. He took our old one and said he'd drop off the new one the next day. After a week of checking the front stoop daily and calling Rice Glass the third and fourth days, I finally got in touch with Chad who told me he "hadn't been out our way" and that I had to come into the store if I wanted it. He then charged me $24.95 for what was supposed to be free, arguing with me when I expressed confusion and frustration in light of last week's conversation. No other employees stepped in although several were listening in the background. Very poor customer service. Will not go back nor recommend to others. read more

The estimate was promised in writing in a day. It arrived.... oh wait, it still hasn't arrived, another four days later. Fast service and fair pricing. I call around and most places told me that it would take at least a week to have it fix. Also very satisfied with the work they did. They'll even deliver glass to you for your home or store. It looks pretty interesting to see them riding down the street with all that glass on both sides of their truck. The service is fast and professional. I actually had the opportunity of using their services, when the back glass of the car window accidentally caved in; long story, but nevertheless, they were able to repair it within the same day.
