This place used to have consistently delicious quality food. This is the second time we have ordered takeout and the quality has gone downhill. The crab Rangoons are not filled. They are the worst. Tastes frozen. The veggie fried rice was over cooked and the General GAO chicken was very greasy and tasteless. Either the owners have changed hands or the quality just isn't there. My wife and I used to love this restaurant. We would usually eat at Rice Valley every other month or so. We even went on New Years Eve once. Their food was very good - we especially liked the spicy house fish fillets. We haven't been back since an evening we were dining when a mouse was running around the restaurant. OK... I know things happen. Perhaps there was a problem and somehow some mouseys took up residence. Not preferable, but understandable. However - here's the problem that for us said, "Do not eat here again!". Upon customers pointing out the mouse that was running through the restaurant, the staff's response was, "Meh". And they did nothing. None of the staff took action to capture the critter. It just ran around a corner and into the bar area. To me, that response is an indication of the following: 1) This happens all the time here. So much that we're used to it. 2) It doesn't matter to us whether our premises are free of rodents or not. 3) The health of our customers means nothing. So the moral of the story is this: Eat at Rice Valley at your own risk! read more

Rice Valley is definitely my favorite Chinese restaurant in the area. Never had a bad meal here, take out or eat in. The cocktails are good as well and the dining room and bar both are a nice place to sit, talk, and enjoy your meal. It is on the pricey side, but you pay for what you get. read more

Just ordered Crispy Sesame Beef and first of all what I got was pork, not even crispy and pretty much a portion of Pork Sweet and Sour sprinkled with a few sesame seeds. If I would have ordered Pork sweet and sour, it would have tasted ok, but since I ordered beef and paid for beef, I am just pure angry! Be aware of what you get! The breading around the meat is so thick, that it is hard to tell, but I cut it away and then the distinct pork taste came through and not only on one piece! Food is good. Cocktails are good. The food is better when you eat in than take out (which is pretty much the case for any restaurant). I haven't tried the sushi yet, but I question the wisdom of naming Maki rolls after movies about the Holocaust. One is called "Shindler's List" (should be spelled Schindler's) and the other is called "Life Is Beautiful." I found this offensive. I was so excited to see that Rice Valley was now offering sushi and decided to stop by and check out the new menu! "Oh, how cute,"I thought, "they decided to name the Maki rolls after famous movies! I like that idea! Let's see... I'll have one Wizard of Oz Roll, a Green Mile, one miso soup and, you know what, I am really hungry go ahead and toss in a Schindler's List roll as well.... wait what?!?!" A Schindler's List Roll, everybody! You can't make that up. Rice Valley wasn't satisfied with having just one holocaust themed sushi roll, however, they decided that there REALLY needed to be two.. after all, we are in Newton, right!?? With that in mind, the Life is Beautiful Roll was born. Nothing gets me in the mood for a nice evening out more than thinking about a family condemned to a Nazi concentration camp where the father is ultimately exterminated.. spoiler alert! Thanks Rice Valley for finally bringing the horrors of the holocaust to my dinner table. Perhaps a "Clueless" roll would make a nice addition to the menu. read more

Long has the Fortune Panda resided at the top of my list for Chinese food, but it's never been an easy reign for them; too expensive, way too expensive to have delivered, and my roommate hates them. So there has been an effort to audition replacements, but it's never produced one that's really had enough going for it to supplant the Panda. Enter Rice Valley, which recently sent a menu around, and despite the fact that it advertised a higher-quality, healthier version of the same Chinese food staples we're used to, i still figured i'd give it a try. Unpacking the bag, i could scarcely contain my excitement because they gave me an entire cardboard container of steamed broccoli. Here i was kicking myself for not ordering some rice to placate the General, but instead i have something even better, an entire pint of broccoli! Awesome broccoli! So i like broccoli. i know, i know, the man who goes to a sundae bar, fills a bowl with sprinkles, and calls it a day. i like broccoli. a lot. so anyway, after doing some damage on the really good General Gau's chicken (really good quality chicken, breaded more lightly, with a less spicy, and less viscous and sticky but still tasty sauce), i attacked some of the sauce with a bright green floret, sopped it up, and savored it. It's not cheap, more expensive than the Panda, and they say delivery's 'available', which means it'll cost a lot, but it's easy to get to, easy parking, and seemed like a nice place to sit down and eat if you're into that sort of thing. Rice Valley has never disappointed me and I think it's time I finally wrote a review on it! Atmosphere: Nice and spacious. Beautiful displays in the center of the dining room and the bar is clean and modern looking Pickup is extremely fast and delivery was always less than 45 min for me. I would always recommend eating dine-in or pick up because the crispier cooked food will understandably get a bit soggier. But if it's fresh out of the kitchen, it is absolutely delicious Recommendations - their portions are huge so I would recommend family style when eating here: ALL of the appetizers are recommended, but the ones that I would especially order are -Scallion pancake + ginger sauce: absolutely delicious, nice and crispy and the ginger sauce is to die for! -Pan fried ravioli: crispy on the outside and the pork meat on the inside is juicy and yummy -Boneless Spareribs: tender on the inside and crunchy on the outside -Chicken wings: hands down the best I've ever had Main courses: -General Gau's chicken: I don't know how they were able to do it, but somehow they got the perfect balance - crispy with just the right amount of sauce -Crispy Angel Hair with seafood: nice and crunch noodles with a pretty good seafood selection -Peking Duck: the meat was well cooked and the manager himself prepares the dish in front of us. -Beef Lomein or Beef Udon: great for sharing Service: Waiters/waitress's English weren't the best, but they always made sure that we were well taken care of. Anytime we had a problem with the bill, it would be swiftly taken care of - Despite the mixed reviews about the staff, I haven't had a bad experience with them at all. I never went to the Golden Star, but I've been going to Rice Valley at least once a month for the past three years. Overall, the bartenders (especially Eddie) do their best to remember your name, and the staff all seem enthusiastic about the food. I don't sit in the dining room all that often, but when I did (once) the server was attentive. I've personally spoken with the manager, and he was very enthusiastic about the ingredients the restaurant uses and seemed to have a general passion for food. I guess I can understand some of the reviewers comments about the food. The food itself sometimes seems a little under-seasoned, but you cannot deny the use of fresh ingredients. The vegetables are always crunchy and fresh, and I can't seem to find any chinese food restaurants in the area that compare. Whenever I'm ordering, the prices don't seem all that steep, but when I get my bill, I always seem to look it over about three times. I find that some of the chef's specials are similar in size to other entrees, but they cost a bit more - perhaps the preparation involved? All in all, this is still my go-to chinese restaurant when I'm in the Newton/Watertown area. read more

Pretty standard chinese food (good dumplings, crab rangoons). Very delicious Mai Tais that were under $8 a pop. What a good deal! Wine is also very reasonably priced. Their dinner menu can be a little bit pricey, but Rice Valley is the best Chinese restaurant in the immediate area. Usually I go the luncheon special route which offers a great portion size for around $10 and includes rice, soup & side. Rice Valley opened in mid-May and still had it's "Grand Opening" banner in front when I stopped by. The restaurant itself is quite nice and features a bar (with TV) which also looks nice. The service was prompt and friendly, and in no time I was munching on some spring rolls and scallion pancakes. Both were pretty good, but nothing exceptional. For dinner I ordered the Szechuan-Style Chicken with Peanuts and my companion got the Moo-shi Vegetables. We both agreed the food was good, but not great. In a word: standard. I felt that the flavors just needed something more to them. Because the service was great, the location close and the atmosphere nice, I will likely return. However, I will continue my search for excellent Chinese in the Newton area. read more

Rice Valley is local to me and a very nice option for Chinese Food. They offer some non MSG and "healthy" fare in addition to the regular stuff more fun to gorge on. The House Fried rice is particularly delicious, the fried chicken is on par with any in this area as well. The steamed dumpiings, part of my regular Chinese food order among all else I mention here, regardless of where I order from haha, are good, not great. I see a LOT of variability in this item across my area. The egg rolls are kind of strange, the only item I would say is below par to my taste buds. My wife dug the chicken fingers too (her standard order) and is also a huge fan of their scorpion bowls and mai tais as she is expert in this arena. They usually can get your order together for pickup in 15-20 minutes or so, so that is a big plus too. Hooray for Rice Valley and thank you for living near me. read more

The 4 of us had good expectations and were disappointed . The server had difficulty understanding our questions about items on their menu. She seemed to be in a hurry to take our orders and leave our table. And there was only one other table occupied in the entire restaurant . This was the best Chinese food I've had in a very long time. Reasonably priced, great atmosphere, and superb service. I got the scallion pancakes, Shu Mai, and chicken lo mein. They were all fantastic! The scallion pancakes were thick and flaky... The Shu Mai were divine, juicy and perfectly fried. We ordered the PU-PU Platter comes with Egg rolls, boneless spareribs, beef teriyaki, chicken fingers, chicken wings, fried jumbo shrimp, we also ordered a side order of pork fried rice. Because my wife does not eat shrimp, she asked to substitute with additional egg rolls. The service was so slow and we were the only ones in the restaurant except for two people at the bar. It took over 40 minutes for the food to hit the table. The wings were cold and greasy, there was enough fat on the spare ribs to render a duck, the teriyaki was so tough I could not chew it. For $35.00 + tax, this was not a good value. Hope we have better luck next time we want Chinese food. read more

Dear Rice valley, We were two people in for dinner tonight. We ordered one appetizer and two main courses. The waitress asked us if we would like rice with that. We asked what types of rice are available and she said "white, brown, and fried rice". My son wanted fried rice, I chose white, and we both assumed we were going to get small sides of rice such as with the white rice When we received a very large main course bowl of pork fried rice, I asked the waitress about whether that was a dinner-order or a side-order. She said "pork fried rice only comes in one size, dinner size", desultorily, as if we already should have known that. If that is in fact the case, she should have told us when it was obvious earlier on that we were just wondering sides, not as a main course. She should have told us that the white rice comes as a two dollar side order and that the pork fried rice comes as a nine dollar main dish. She did not volunteer in any way an apology or an explanation for not having told us. I think that this is wrong and disingenuous. I made mild complaint when she was there about this matter but nothing happened on the bill. My son did not want me to protest during the course of the meal so as not to ruin the meal, but I think that this is a bad policy that you have. He did not enjoy his sweet and sour pork. read more

Every year we go there for an end of the year gathering with our friends. This year was no different. At the end of the night, we decided to split the bill, $35/person. Everyone had cash but me and my wife. I told the waitress, please put $70 on the card and the rest in cash. That would take care of the bill and tip, which was 20% tip. I got my receipt and signed it. A few minutes later, fraud protection from my bank called and said i had TWO charges from Rice Valley. I asked the waitress and she said that she made a two charges by mistake. But the funny thing is that the "mistake" that was voided was never presented to me until I brought it up. I asked for the voided receipt and she started yelling to the bar and brought it to me, AFTER I asked. The voided receipt was the exact amount of the bill minus my $70. So she was going to pocket the $140 and charge me twice. How would I be able to prove that we gave cash the next day? So we really liked the place, but they blatantly tried to steal my money. So if you go, PAY CASH! I have the receipts and can post them if needed. read more

Rice Valley came onto the Newton scene as one of the few places that would deliver and it also offered a fresher, healthier take on Chinese food. It was never outstanding, but it was good enough years ago. Putting aside the fact that the menu has not changed in all those many years, the delivery option has also become unattractive. There is now a 25 minimum for delivery, that on top of the fact that any time you order the estimated delivery time is "45 minutes" which has no relation to fact. And the food is only so-so. I'm glad I gave Rice Valley a second chance. I came here with some friends and everything was delicious. Even the sauteed chicken with vegetables which can be either too bland or drenched in some sticky soy sauce concoction. My two other favorites were the scallion pancakes and crispy aromatic shrimp. Delish! The restaurant's interior is nice and the waiter was attentive with refilling the water. The prices are a little more expensive than some neighboring places but I find the food to be fresher. Oh dear, this is perhaps some of the worst Chinese food I've ever had and that includes a hole-in-the-wall Midwest town with a population of 1000. I ordered the chow fun for $8.50. The beef was completely overcooked and leathery. The vegetables were soggy and brown-yellow. The rice noodles were still stuck together so they were cooked on the outside but the noodles packed on the inside were still raw. The portion size is also small but if it were bigger, I couldn't have stomached it anyway. I can't come back here after this dish. read more

I've been going to Rice Valley for about 8 or 9 years. It's a nice restaurant, with good service, very good food, and great Mai Tai's! Our favorite menu items are the lettuce wraps, boneless pork strips, chicken wings, and veggie fried rice. We've had the salt and pepper prawns, which are good, but not like the delicious ones we use to get in Malaysia. General Gao's is good, as are all the typical dishes. I do prefer to dine in as I always enjoy the food more when it's on a plate and not out of a container... it's just not the same. We go to Rice Valley about 1 time evey six week or so. read more
