So after having had my not-so-good koreanized sushi around the corner from my apt. in K-Town, my friends invited me to Rice Things in Redondo, mostly because it's cheap and it's quick and not so expensive because I hadn't had good sushi in a while although I didn't mention my last experience nor my penchant for run-on sentences like this one.
So we're standing in line to order, yeah, it's a fast-food sushi joint which disappointed me and that's when I shared my story about the last sushi place I went to which embarrassed my friends slightly as they would've taken me someplace else: preferably one with sit-down and wait service....
but hey, you know, I hadn't eaten in 7 hours and what I ate was crazy chicken so it could've been shoe leather with a dash of salt and pepper and I would've ate it with glee...okay maybe not glee....
So back to our story, we ordered and instead of taking my friends's recommendation for the combo specials, I ordered three rollls because I really wanted sushi---been talking about it for the last 4 hours at work. The combo specials are huge servings of food with an option of sushi in addition.
I ordered a rainbow roll, an alaskan roll, and a spicy tuna hand roll and thinking aloud, wondered if I was hungry enuf to get more when the girl operating the cash register chimed in that that was already a lot of food. I went with her comment, probably because my brain was already fried from working in the sun all day and hey, she was cute.
Well, we get our orders and mine is noticeably much smaller than my friends which begged the comment: "well I got the appetizers, where are the entrees..." So a little surprised by it and wondering maybe I shouldn't have let the cute factor play into my decisions....
but as I ate, it actually did start to fill me up. Which brings me to the quality of the sushi which is what you really want...not bad. It's not frickin awesome by any stretch but compared to my last sushi place---sooooooo much better. The pieces are rather small but surprisingly filling. It was relatively fresh insomuch it didn't taste fishy or looked oddly discolored but at the same time the quality isn't as good as say Oomasa in Little Tokyo. I would say it's on par with California Sushi Roll---eh the Los Feliz branch which I hear is better than the rest of the chain.
Again, I was really hungry so maybe I might be liking it better than I should but I thought it was good and in a pinch, it was fast and rather satisfying. Did I mention reasonably priced. I spent like $22 for three rolls, the Alaskan roll and Rainbow roll were cut into 8 pieces each so yeah, not too bad a night.
Service was good as much as it could be at a counter top. read more
