We got seated very quickly and were welcomed upon arriving. We sat down and ordered. The waitress gave us our utensils and I opened it to see a piece of hair, so I asked for new ones. The miso soup was served first, not hot but Luke warm. Our first entree arrived and only one rice bowl appeared, so I guess she didn't hear that we order 2 rice bowls. I am so sad that Rice Bowl has disappointed me. I've been ordering for delivery from here for about 4 years now. Back in the day, everything was great. Their delivery drivers were super kind and friendly, nothing ever went wrong. Out of the last 6 time I've ordered, 4 of them have been either missing or incorrect deliveries. Once they forgot my boyfriend's rice. Then they forgot mine. Then they brought me a chicken salad instead of sesame chicken (that time we ordered by phone, hoping that maybe they just misinterpreted the website). Now they forgot the extra sauce I requested for my crispy wontons as well as the sauce that comes with their lettuce wraps. The wraps are incredibly bland without the sauce, I'm not interested in eating them anymore. I thought for sure that, after a couple of times of getting our orders right, we were past the little mishaps but apparently not. I think the thing Rice Bowl has going for them (at least for us) is the large sushi rolls and delivery through Grub Hub. (Entree Express is so expensive!) The owner is super nice & while it may not be michelin star quality, it's still good food! read more

I'm a huge fan of Rice Bowl! When I first moved to Chico I was worried I wouldn't be able to find a decent sushi place-- I'm from San Jose so I'd always been surrounded by great sushi! However, my awesome roommates brought me here and I've been a frequent customer ever since. I usually get the same thing: edamame, the Tiger roll, and California roll. The best part is that they have awesome deals for PocketPoints; free edamame, California roll, or spring roll. Prices are great, but the "specialty" rolls are pretty expensive even though they're all pretty much the same and aren't much different than the regular rolls. Portions are perfect and quality, in my experience, has been equivalent whether I order in-restaurant or order for takeout. Takeout orders are ready pretty fast, too (10 mins or so). read more

Let me start off by saying that this place was a buffet the last time I was here (to show you I haven't been here in ages). Haven't gone back since I moved out of the city. After many years, I did not expect a surprise in my food! I was admiring how the sweet and sour pork was. The sauce was not heavily coated and the fried pork was perfect. So was the fried rice....But as I was getting down to my last couple of bites I found a piece of hair (about 2 inches) in the fried rice. Showed it to our server and she ask me if I wanted it off the bill (of course I want it off the bill!) My stomach was turning and I lost my appetite. Tried not to throw it all back out by really holding back and drinking a lot of water. My uncle and auntie said that they were surprised that the dragon roll they oered was actually good. The restaurant could use an upgrade on interior setting and bathrooms. A little dark inside on a really sunny day and there's about and inch or 2 space between the stall (like you really have to do your business if you don't want other peeping at you). Also there are flies flying around in the restaurant. A little hard trying to eat and fight with the flies. Our server could use a smile too. The Rice Bowl has been a favorite spot for us for 10 years. Owners are amazing, always greet you with a smile. Food is delicious!! Service is fast, especially when you order for delivery (how did they get here so fast). Favorite items for us are the chow mein, the kids menu and all the sushi! Perfect local for larger families as they have the big round tables with lazy Susan's (which the kids like using). Three generations meet here for Christmas Eve every year...we may be their #1 fan! read more

We had been coming to the Rice Bowl for many years when we are in Chico. But this time is was disgustingly dirty! Carpets worn down, spill spots everywhere. The overhead "hangings" looked like they hadn't been washed in years with moldy,looking spots on them. Thick dust on all the window sills next to the booths! We lost our appetites, especially when we looked up. Food was only mediocre and in the cold side when served. Ordered the combo plate A, lots of greasy fried rice, tough sweet n sour pork, and such a small "clump" of special chow mein it was hard to find on the plate, with only 1 (!) shrimp in it The Health Department really should look into this place for its lack of cleanliness! Food is meh. The entrance is confusing af and dingy. It loooks like it has had it's better days and needs a revamping to keep up with its age. Lots of cobweb and stains on the ceiling. The red lacquer is really nice though so I like. Service was also meh. Like they came back and asked to refill our water but there was a lack of gusto and energy. The food takes forever to come out and like I'm not trying to finish eating my food before my friends dont get there food. Back to foood : I would only order from the chinese menu def avoid any of the japanese food or other things on the big menu. The basic chinese american food taste fine but it's not anything special. I always enjoy the food at the Rice Bowl. The Sushi rolls are very big compared to other sushi places. The Salmon Pesto roll is my favorite. The Chow mien , Cashew and Broccoli Chicken is delicious. I have never had a dish there that I was disappointed with. The owners, Chefs, servers and other staff are friendly and helpful. I have never noticed any problems with cleanliness. At first I loved this place until I continued to order their food for pick up. They made my wife wait for our food for ONE HOUR after we got there at the time they told us to pick up the food. Turns out or food was ready the whole time, they just didn't want to help us (we are a minority couple). During this whole hour of waiting for our food the waitresses were screaming curse words in front of children. They were talking about how they hated their job and the other waitresses who worked there. Also, my wife was forced to pay before we got our food. They then made her wait an hour (they already got their money, they didn't care) The food went downhill. If you want real Japanese food go to Teriyaki House just down the way. You know what they say, first impressions. I should have ran. The service was very good. However, the restaurant is very dirty, big pan of dirty dishes from the night before. Empty boxes everywhere, on boot pack with cookies and visa card machines, yuck. I ordered Chow Mein with crunchy noodles. I received my order after about 10 minutes in a plastic bag. By the time I got back to work the juice was everywhere. The food was awful, chow mein was the worse I have ever had, the crunchy noodles were stale as was the fortune cookie. All in all I cant give this place any stars. But the system will not let me so they get 1 read more

Where to start? I want to like this place because it's near my house and the food is generally good... but the service is all over the map and cleanliness is questionable. Sushi is 4-stars, mixed drinks are 2-1/2. I have had attentive waitstaff and some who treat customers as an inconvenience. Holy cow that's a lot of food! Dine here and you will be taking food home, but that's ok because it's really good! I was very surprised at how extensive their menu was. Generally speaking when you have that many options none of them are particularly fabulous, boy was that ever not the case here! We got one of their dinners for two (it was "B" I think) from the Chinese menu. That came with soup (choice of won ton or hot and sour, you and your dining companion do not have to choose the same one, yay!), three different kinds of appetizers (won tons, egg rolls, and some chicken thing), sweet and sour pork, cashew nut chicken and fried rice. Dinner for two was easily enough food for four, and the prices were incredibly reasonable (about $13/person I believe). The service was fast, efficient and friendly. Don't let appearances fool you, the outside is unassuming, but inside you'll find a real gem. Maybe next time I'll try something from the Japanese menu. read more

I love the food here and I love the service. It is so awesome to come and get both Chinese and Japanese food. I always get sushi and use pocket points to get the free Cali roll. My boyfriends uses pocket points for the free spring rolls. Our typical order is some roll (all are delicious) the CA roll spring rolls chow mein and orange chicken. We love coming here and we go with friends a lot. The only reason I gave four stars and not five was for I ordered for pick up for a specific time. I love this place. Especially when I can't decide if I want Chinese or Japanese, they do both. They have two menus. It is perfect for my boyfriend and I who always seem to want different foods! Solid Chinese and Japanese dining. I really enjoy going here with my family. The kids eat edemame until they burst. The sushi is worth having, but nothing exciting (Go to the Raw Bar, Japanese Blossom, or Big Tuna for that). I know it's changed owners, then back to the originals over the years, but I remember coming back in the early 1980s with my grandmother. Her favorite was the Howard's Special Chow Mein, and it still tastes as good today. My new favorite is a bento box with tempura shrimp and veg. It also has been FANTASTIC for groups. I am honestly shocked at the experience we just had here. We had a very large party to celebrate a birthday today and having been to several restaurants in the last year for similar celebrations, I was prepared for the worst. But I was pleasantly surprised with how our party was handled. Food - Despite our large party, the food was fresh, hot, and delicious. Everyone enjoyed their meal and had zero complaints. Too much to list but I know that I had the Beef with Asparagus and it was perfect. The beef was tender and tasty, the asparagus was perfectly cooked and tender yet crisp. The only other stand out was the Salmon Pesto sushi roll. The party that ordered it is an extremely picky eater and actually said it was the best sushi roll he has ever had. Drinks were always topped off all around and she always remembered what everyone was drinking. Service - This was the stand out to me. As stated, we were a large party and of about 20. There had to be at least 8 separate checks (something that usually elicits an eye roll from the wait staff of most restaurants) and our wait person didn't even bat an eye. The food was delivered very quickly and she knew exactly where every dish went. As for the separate checks, they were all perfectly billed (another rarity). We gave our wait person a 100% tip as she handled everything with grace and was delightful the whole time. Even put up with taking a group photo with several phones and got everyone to laugh. Overall - While some reviewers chose to comment on the decor (seriously? get over yourselves), I am focusing on what really matters: the service and food. Each was impeccable and a true rarity these days. Always difficult to find Asian food in a new town and I have finally found the one I really enjoy. The fact that they have both Chinese and Japanese food is another huge win. Rice Bowl Employees - You have earned a customer for as long as I live here and you maintain your focus on the food and service. Ignore those who seem to think the decor is lacking. Living in the Bay Area, I'm used to good quality sushi. I've become spoiled by it. I grew up in Chico, which for most of my life had very few sushi restaurants. I never went to the Rice Bowl until they reopened just a couple years ago, and was quite impressed. They carry a good selection of Japanese and Chinese food. Rice Bowl's sushi easily compares to the sushi at my favorite restaurants in the South Bay. Their Hot Night (spicy tuna and avocado with special sauce) is to die for. It has its own unique taste that I just crave, and I find myself wishing the restaurants here had it. I haven't tried their Chinese, but my family seems to love it. Their service is quite good, and some of their waiters go out of their way to make sure you have everything you need. They have a good selection of drinks. I'm a fan of their Nigori sake, though I've heard great things about their blueberry sake. For those who enjoy the Japanese soda Ramune, you'll be glad to know they carry several flavors. The place feels quite spacious and clean from the inside, even though it really doesn't look like much from the outside. My only real "complaint" is that they're a bit more pricey than I'm used to, but given that Chico is not known for its quality sushi restaurants, this isn't that surprising. Still, I end up paying several dollars more there than I would in most good sushi restaurants I've been to. Still, I highly recommend them. I came here for my friends 21st, we had the sake bombs, sat at a big round table with friends and the fam and enjoyed a huge array of yummy dishes. They have anything and everything you could want here... my favorites are the hot and sour soup, and most chinese dishes, the sushi wasn't my favorite but I'm super picky so I'm not a good judge of sushi-character. I love the atmosphere of this place, you can tell that a lot of thought and love went into planning it, they have the private rooms up front where you can sit on the floor like in old Doris Day movies from the 60s.
