I came to Rice Bowl in Bakersfield for my mother's birthday. We've been here before and have always had a good experience, which made this visit especially disappointing. I ordered the rice bowl dinner and specifically told our server that I wanted the soft noodle chicken chow mein that comes with the meal. When my food arrived, it had crunchy noodles instead. I let the server know that this wasn't what I ordered. He seemed confused and told me to keep the plate and that he would bring me a side of chicken chow mein. Since everyone else's food was already at the table, I agreed. The problem is, he never brought it. By the time he returned, he was bringing takeout containers and the bill. I had to remind him that I was still waiting for my chow mein. A minute later, he came back with a small bowl of what appeared to be plain boiled noodles. When I explained that I had ordered chicken chow mein, he told me those were the noodles that go underneath the vegetables. At that point, I was done arguing about it. Unfortunately, the food itself wasn't much better. It was bland and lacked the flavor and quality I remember Rice Bowl having in the past. What disappointed me even more was the way my complaint was handled. I brought the issue to the owner's attention, and I felt my concerns were simply disregarded rather than taken seriously or addressed. Mistakes happen in restaurants, and I understand that, but how management responds to a customer when something goes wrong says a lot about the establishment. Rice Bowl has been a longtime Bakersfield restaurant, and I genuinely remember a time when both the food and service were much better. Based on this experience, it feels like the quality and customer service have declined significantly. We came here to celebrate my mother's birthday and left frustrated and disappointed. Unfortunately, after the poor service, bland food, incorrect order, and the way my complaint was handled by the owner, I will not be returning. Someone told me they didn't like the food there but was willing to try myself. Place looks cozy with a nice family ambiance. Wasn't that busy so didn't wait long to get my food. I ordered the spicy beef, kung pao chicken, mu shu pork, orange chicken and sweet and sour pork. All came with fried shrimp, spring rolls and fried rice and I chose the Cantonese style noodles. Food was decent but did lack flavor. It seemed like it was missing some seasoning. Most Chinese food you can taste spices especially garlic and didn't taste any. I've often wondered how two Chinese restaurants could coexist literally across the street from each other for decades, so I finally decided to look into it further. The two restaurants are this one, Rice Bowl, and the other one is Bill Lee's Bamboo Chopsticks. Bill Lee's has been in business since 1938, and Rice Bowl has been there since 1948. That's 88 years for Bill Lee's, and 78 years for Rice Bowl. They both serve Cantonese style food, but Bill Lee's has a couple of Mandarin dishes on the menu, and at Rice Bowl you can also get American food like a cheeseburger and fries. I would have to say that the quality is better at Bill Lee's, but the prices are lower and the portions are larger at Rice Bowl. Both places make killer Mai-Tais. The big difference between the two places is that Rice Bowl has an awesome server named Candy. She's amazing! read more

Spent so much had it delivered and it was the worst we've ever had. This is our last time eating with them, we may try again but not any time soon. We really enjoy the Rice Bowl. Not sure why the star ratings are low, though admittedly, I didn't scroll through many reviews. We went in last Sunday and they were so accommodating to seat us in the bar so we could watch the World Cup. We had a couple teenage kids with us and it was nice they were able to eat in there with us since they have tables and booths. Everyone got a lunch special which is reasonably priced considering how much food they give. Delicious and can't wait to be back. One of the best Chinese restaurants in Bakersfield, in my opinion. Its hard to choose on their Chow Mein options so when we order the combo plates, I order the Cantonese style and my husband gets the pan fried. One comes with more vegetables while the other has a chop suey on top. The sweet and sour chicken surprise us since we weren't expecting chicken wings, but nonetheless, they were delicious. Rice Bowl's sweet and sour sauce has got to be some of the best sauce we've ever tasted. If you're looking for a sit down Chinese food restaurant restaurant in Bakersfield, of course their are a few to choose from but I definitely suggest you pick Rice Bowl.
