The yummiest food and vibey restaurant located on Dundas st west, close to trinity bellwoods. We ordered the accra, Mac and cheese, Haitian spaghetti, fried fish plate, ginger beer and a piña colada. This was a great experience. The service was attentive and hospitable. I would suggest getting there early or if reservations are possible, go for it as it is a small space but very cozy. The lights were very dim but the music was nice. We started off with banana frites which was torn up quickly with some pikliz. After that, we ordered the macaroni au gratin and oh my goodness, that was some of the best mac we have had in a long time. My husband and I cherished every single penne. I'm not sure if it was us walking 30 minutes to this restaurant or if the drinks were hitting just right but wow. Do not sleep on that mac. I do want to disclose that it doesn't taste like your typical Haitian mac and cheese that you get from a family member or restaurant in Miami but it was still very good. Is this a bar that also serves Haitian food or a Haitian restaurant that's also a bar? With the crowd and music at 11pm, it was definitely the former, and the abundance of bar seats leads me to suspect this is also the case earlier in the day. Philosophical questions aside, I got the Macaroni au gratin & street style griot. Street style meant the griot came with plantains. It was huge for a "snack". The pork was crispy & tasty. It was a good cut - tender but still with some sweet fat. The plantains were smashed & fried, so they were super crispy & had some flavorful seasoning too. There was also grilled onions & peppers, which were also very tasty. The macaroni was rich with a crispy topping & a creamy, cheesey sauce. It used macaroni & penne which was nice variety. Relatively speaking it wasn't as big as the griot. You get a free flow of spicy pickled cabbage. It's crisp but pretty spicy. It was my first time trying ting, which was delicious. It's Friday night and it's a happening place here. My daughter suggested Haitian food and I was all in. While we waited for a table we sat at the bar and shared Rhum punch. I've never experienced this before but it was pre-made in what appeared to be a 12 oz brown bottle. Two drinks were partially poured into glasses each containing a large cube of ice. Fresh nutmeg was grated finely on the drinks. It was a unique taste for me. Didn't seem to have a lot of alcohol but was certainly refreshing. Had Griot as an appetizer. Never heard of it before but in part contained plantains and pork. Also had a cashew chicken dish and fried chicken. It wouldn't do it justice to explain the flavors of these dishes but suffice it to say you have to sample this to appreciate it. This is a bar/restaurant ananda where we were seated in the back was loud in nature but we made do. I would recommend visiting as where I'm from I've never come across it. Went here for my birthday dinner with two friends at 6:30 on a Friday and got seated immediately. 90% of the cocktails are rum based and really tasty. I got the painkiller and jungle bird. The food can be pretty spicy but so very tasty. We got the salt cod patty, ceviche, and cashew chicken. The patty is spicy and if you want to add a little extra spice to it their pickled relish is so good. The ceviche is also really tasty but tasted a little fishy. And the cashew chicken was tasty. Definitely enjoyed this spot. Was pleasantly surprised by how much they could pack into this small space. But not sure if they have different head chefs on different nights? First went on a weekend and was blown away by the food. The highlight was definitely the griot - which to me seemed like cuts of pork marinated in citrus flavors and perfectly grilled, with a side of plantains shaped into flat patties. The pork was so flavorful and juicy, and the plantains were a satisfying side. The mac and cheese was also as good as any I've had in the southern US. However we went again on a weeknight and the food was solid but not amazing this time. The pork seemed overcooked and the flavors weren't as strong, although the plantains still came out great. And this time the mac and cheese tasted more like something I could make at home with a bit of effort. The ambience definitely makes up for any missteps. The front part is a bar with people milling around and talking while the back is the restaurant with very limited seating, no reservations. Open kitchen concept. The music is loud and fun. The Rhum Corner was a great overall experience. If you want a good cocktail and great atmosphere you've definitely come to the right place. The space is is decorated with murals/ art which creates the island vibe in the middle of Toronto. The wait staff were very delightful. We sat in the bar area, and chatted for a bit about our lives and the things that are fun to do in The city. Great group of people. The food was just as amazing. We order a bunch of bites as well as plates. The griot, macaroni au gratin, fried chicken (only served on the weekend I think). I'd really recommend the macaroni as it was beyond flavorful. I like dark rum and have passed by Rhum Corner many times ... this evening we stopped in to check it out. We sat at the bar. To try a variety of rums, we ordered flights ... you get a half ounce of each rum. We started with Kal's flight as he was our bartender. He was friendly and definitely knowledgeable about rum. We liked his recommendations ... they had a bold taste. Then we tried Julia's flight. We liked Julia's ... they were smooth but not as bold-tasting as Kal's. It was fun to try the different rums this way as we could actually taste them since they weren't masked by pop. And it's a good way to check out higher-end rums than we usually drink. Delicious cocktails! The Jungle Bird had sweetness from the pineapple, but was still well balanced and so pretty. The Golden Hour had a bit of spice from the ginger. My bf got a rum old fashioned which tasted just how you'd imagine. For food, I got a flaky patty with salted cod inside. We also got 2 pieces of crispy, flavourful and juicy fried chicken. The oxtail was rich and filling. They give a side that looks like coleslaw - beware, it is spicy af (even for my spice-loving bf). Still tasty to nibble on though. They don't take reservations, but if you get there early it's fairly easy to get a table. Their patio is cute with umbrellas to shade you. The service was attentive and friendly. Entertained by anti-vaxx protesters while we munched on fried chicken and pork shoulder, Ms. Agg joined the patio and her diners as she weathered the abuse with grace and dignity. This place is tiny - bordering on claustrophobic for me - I felt squished in. It's dark, it's cozy and it's lively and loud here! You want to try and discover new rums? Come here! You want to get some knowledge about rums? Come here! Basically I think everyone should check this place out with the intention of trying out some new brands. Once you've had a good quality rum you will never go back to the cheap stuff. It goes down smooth, like velvet...instead of a 3rd degree burn. So I was in Toronto for about a week and had tried so many different spots and types of foods. On my last day, this is where I went..... BEST DECISION EVER!!! I walked about 40 minutes here from my hotel (didn't know any better). But glad I burned some of the calories I was about to ingest! The setting is really nice. I'm Haitian and I was really happy to see a place that kept the integrity of our culture and was still able to share it with others in a way they can enjoy! I walked in and Haitian music was being blasted, drinks were being served, people were talking having a blast, and eating amazing food. The first thing I ordered was a drink. I got the Spiced Rum + Ginger. That was really good. For a bar/restaurant, it's nice to have a place that has really tasty but strong drinks! After that I ordered the griot as an appetizer. I loved it! It was extremely moist, which can be hard to do with griot. It was a little bit on the salty side, but still very enjoyable. They had little jars of piklíz all over the place. And I loved it! To see and eat, haha. To go, I got the boulette entre (seasoned meatballs). Usually, they are fried and this was the first time I had them in sauce. It was a surprise to me when I opened the box. But man! I'm glad I went with it cause boy was it good! I loved that they also had their own hot sauces. I bought 3 bottles to go just because they were so good and hot! It's like piklíz in a bottle. On top of the great food, my server was also amazing! Very knowledgeable, friendly, and patient! I don't remember her name, but it was cool they hired someone very familiar with the culture. I highly recommend this place. One thing Jen Agg does super, super well is washrooms. Rhum Corner's washrooms somehow smelled like coconuts. They are always beautiful, and well designed. We were randomly walking by, and I've had this place on my list for a while. I usually really like Agg's restaurants. Black Hoof and Cocktail Bar are both great, but I am a Grey Gardens hater, sadly. I was hopeful, though, since the concept is so unlike anything else in Toronto. First of all, the music was amazing. I would stay and sit here, drink a slushie and listen to the music, all day. We ended up sitting facing the street because the rest of the restaurant was incredibly warm (yay for summer!). Service was really good, my server was really good about my hatred of cilantro, and helped me navigate the dishes and also made sure to let me know when he dropped the plates so that I wouldn't feel nervous. Also, I made a stupid order and he helped me out so I wouldn't get 20000 bananes frites. The drinks, as always with Agg, were the star. OMG so good, strong, well thought out, matched well with the dishes. YUM. We both enjoyed the food, but I'm not sure if I would rush back for it, whereas I would definitely rush back for the drinks and then happen to order a dish or two to accompany them. All in all, so unique to Toronto and that alone makes it a gem. read more

One of the best small places to go for rum drinks and appetizer sized food featured from the Caribbean. Highly recommended

We were looking to close out a pretty fantastic night with a quick drink and a snack, and Rhum Corner was right there, so... We walked in and the place was maybe half full, but we were able to snag a table at the back without a problem. We decided to try a couple of things: Accra fritters. This included five fritters and a dipping sauce, and it was quite good. The flavor of the fritters themselves was a little one-note and maybe too salty, but when dipped in that sauce, it actually turned into a pretty tasty little snack. We also got a dessert that isn't in the online menu, but was essentially a bread pudding made with sweet potato and raisins. It doesn't sound like it should work, and indeed the taste is quite strong and hardly sweet at all, but when eaten with the accompanying sauce and cream, it's actually quite an enjoyable dessert. Finally, we decided to share one of their made-for-two cocktails, the Zombie ("so many ingredients... dangerously delicious"). It's smaller than we were expecting, but it's definitely quite tasty. All in all, Rhum Corner is a very cool, very casual little place. I could definitely see it become a hangout if I lived in the neighborhood. read more

I been here four times ever since they opened right next to black hood(RIP), everything on the menu had been unnecessary sweet for some unknown reason. If any one who has been exposed to any kind of Carribean food, they know not everything should be sweet like what Rhum Corner is serving. One or two dishes, I get it. Some ppl prefer sweeter taste in certain dishes but every dishes I tried in their menu has been always tad too sweet. Good for a sweet snack to have with their drinks but won't recommend for full dinner unless if you are into sweeter food. Drinks are always great. I got not much to say. They are typical Queen West strength but can be little strong for some ppl so order with caution if you are light weight. Vibe is cozy hip Carribean bar atmosphere in a possitive way. Last time I checked, they didn't have AC. So it gets pretty dead hot in summer. Will definitely recommend to check it out in winter time. Will I go back ? I was recently here for a solo dinner at the bar. I got the cashew chicken, which came with rice and beans. It was tasty and filling, although it tasted more like home-cooking than restaurant food. It was all pretty plain and under-seasoned. The best part was the accompanying tostone. It would be 3 stars for food alone, but the vibe and atmosphere was great, as was service. Cocktails (which lean tiki) are good too. The jungle bird variant they serve (with aperol) lacks a little of the bitter kick of the original, but was very fresh-tasting. Having finally been, I'm bummed it took me so long to walk through the doors of this charming and delicious Dundas West spot. I had stayed away thinking I wouldn't be able to find much in the way of vegetarian-friendly fare. I think I was lumping it in with the other Jen Agg owned spot, Black Hoof, which is very veg-unfriendly. Turns out Rhum Corner has more than enough on its menu to satisfy both the veggiesaurus and meatasuarus in your life. They don't take reservations, but my party of three walked in around 8:30pm on a Tuesday and were sat immediately at a cozy little table. We each ordered a cocktail (two Rhum Negroni slushies and a Mai Tai) and set out making our decisions. We basically took on half the snack menu, which is all the vegetarian options they have, but its more than enough for three people to share for a light-ish dinner. About 15 minutes later our items started to arrive: bananes frites, accra fritters with pikliz, macaroni au gratin, and rice n'beans. Everything was delicious and satisfying and I was still stuffed hours later. Our tart and somewhat bitter cocktails were the perfect balance to all the hearty food. Also worth nothing is the space itself. There has been meticulous attention paid to the decor, glassware, and even the custom stamp used for the takeout containers. My beef is with the lack of POC in front of house and kitchen. In all of our visits, there was only ever one person of color working in the kitchen. I realize that it is a Haitian owner. But the contrast between the mostly-white clientele & staff, versus the objectified black bodies displayed in the décor is disturbing. (Also, the bathroom stalls always smell like urine or worse, not coconuts, and need a better ventilation system or deodorizer.) The food and drink is, of course, delicious and the service is always good. But this successful business formula relies on operating just like any other non black owned restaurant -- Toronto often excludes people of color in the daily operations of casual fine dining. And, yes, we're Caribbean POC and yes, we have seen other POC dining there. But it seems to be the exception. read more

Cozy lil cocktail spot near bellwoods. I've never been there when it hasn't been absolutely packed. The cocktails are rum focused and tropical. They have 2 rum slushy options which make this place worth the visit in my opinion. They also have delicious food offerings that are a good mix of sharing and dinner plates. I usually order the cashew chicken, rice and peas. My boyfriend gets the oxtail and says it's better than the one his Jamaican dad makes. I am not sure what they put in the drink "Zombie", but if the taste is anywhere as good as how it feels to be a zombie, I would want to be in The Walking Dead. This drink is absolutely delicious and a great way to start the night! We got the "Oxtail with rice, gravy, and tostones", "Legumes and goat over polenta", "Pork Ribs, "Fried pork shoulder and fried plantains", "A Whole Fish" and a couple other dishes. Needless to say, we definitely had a great night. The place gives off a unique and yet cozy vibe. All the dishes were quite good and the price is very reasonable. Was referred to this place by a friend and I truly wish I was there before they stopped serving food. ( even though some small plates were offered to I assume frequent patrons or friends... no biggie) I was told they didn't have any rice left to serve either, no biggie I'll still try the drinks. Even though the food smelled heavenly, the drinks were soooooooo fresh and refreshing. I was told per bartender to try starting off the spiced rhum ginger and oh wow!!! Amazingly fresh and delicious. Next the bartender just said " let me make you something" that drink was fresh tasting as well. I viewed the fresh ingredients used and I loved to see that. No better place to turn to than yelp to see what's currently open and well rated. a few places pop up, but Rhum Corner stood out to me, as I have frequented the black hoof and Jen Agg's spin-offs in the past and felt that it would be a safe choice. When I first heard that Jen and husband Roland Jean were closing the raw bar for a haute cuisine carribean restaurant and rum bar, I was skeptical. but the reviews have come in favourably, and so, it was finally time to check it out. for drinks, my table and I all got the Dark and Stormy based on some of the reviews on yelp and the overall description on the menu. As promised, it delieverd in all aspects. Great ginger beer base, and balance of all ingredients. I got the Griot (Fried pork shoulder, with fried plaintain), and the Accra (a fried dumplings of sorts, similar to fried taro that you get at chinese dim sum) for the table to start. both dishes were delicious, and perfect for sharing. For the main, I got the oxtail which came with white rice, a bean gravy sauce, and tostones. The dish itself was great, but what really put it over the top was the hot sauce that they gave us on the side. whooooo. Not sure what it consisted of, but it tasted like smokey scotch bonnet peppers and some vinegar. If you like heat with your food, definitely ask for it, and throw it on. Aside from the food and drinks, I really liked the atmosphere. It reminded me of little cafes or bars I would go to when travelling through South America. dimly lit, tunes in the background, and an overall feeling of relaxation. I have been wanting to check this place out since it opened and finally got to do so. My first attempt was on a Wednesday and was a huge fail. FYI- they're closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Planned to meet some friends for a drink there on Friday night around 9:00pm. My friend got there first and was told there was a 45 minute wait so we just headed down the street to Magpie. Around 10:30/11:00 we decided to give Rhum Corner another shot and were able to snag 3 seats at the bar. It was packed, music was blaring and the rum was flowing. If you're a real rum aficionado you'll appreciate the varieties of rum that they have available for your tasting pleasure. I had a dark and stormy ($9) and a beer (they start at $4.50 for a mug - not quite a pint). The food menu was limited but all sounded (and smelled) delicious. The bartender poured one shot of Angustora 1919 rum, one shot of Mexican Coke and stirred it. So simple, but it may by one of the best drinks I've had to date. So good. The chicken patties are absolutely amazing, the crust is so flaky and flavourful and the filling is packed with super juicy chunks of chicken (how?!) and peppers. I got one but truly, I may get 10 next time. The oxtail with beans and rice was good, too fatty for me, but thats my fault I should have known its a fatty cut. The pikliz is something you need in your fridge, crunchy, sour and spicy, I'm planning on using it in grilled cheese and on some fish. Though we just came in for one drink it certainly left an impression. A bit outside the tourist sections of Toronto, Rhum Corner felt really local which was a good thing.
