I booked here after seeing reviews with pictures of beautiful cocktails, but I did not see many cocktails in the menu when we were here. But after visiting here and went home, I learned that they have another speakeasy space in the back with bunch of cocktail menus. I should have asked for a table in that space. I was here with my girl friend who loves oyster and cocktails. But that was OK, it was a hot day, we craved for beer anyways. They had 3 kinds of draft beer, incl. Asahi, IPA and Guinness. We ordered (food): #1. Naked Oysters (6 pieces $28) #2. DIRTY MARTINI Oyesters (6 pieces $29) #3. BEEF CARPACCIO($17) #4. FRITES Our main purpose here was oysters. I liked #1 but did not like #2. oyster (in a shell) is drenched in martini with chopped Castelvetrano olives & some fish roes on top. Although I am a big fun of Castelvetrano olives, I did not feel its nuttiness and crisp texture, and fish roes are tasteless. Resulting in bland flavour. #3 was disappointing. Beef slices were super paper thin, sticking onto the plate. The main flavour that I felt from the dishes were from its toppings like Truffle Aioli (Truffle not detectable), Arugula, Piave (cheese), Chimichurri, some caper flavor. Fresh truffle was supposed to be in this dish but I did not feel that. I questioned what I was eating when eating this. #4 was ok. When it came to the table, I was excited about its presentation. Crispy fries were absolutely well done and tasty. But after eating top several pieces, I realised that underneath these beautiful fried sticks were tons of debris. The dip (Black Garlic Aioli) was not impressive. What I appreciated this place this time about - was the table. I've been curious about Coffee Oysters Champagne for quite a while, because how could I not be with a name like that? A recent evening in the area after a long day of TIFFing seemed like the ideal opportunity to check the joint out. We were offered the chance to check out the hidden part of the restaurant but we chickened out and decided to just stick with the main area. I'm glad we did because it's a really nice little place with a cool, welcoming vibe. We knew wanted to get oysters and champagne because obviously so the Shuck Me, I'm Fabulous ("Glass of Louis Roederer Champagne, a Half Dozen Naked Oysters, Frites & Caesar Salad") seemed like the perfect option. (We also ordered another glass of the same champagne because we weren't going to share one glass like a couple of psychos.) The first thing to arrive was the salad and it was surprisingly decent. Very flavorful and not excessively creamy or dressed. It also had a nice hit of citrus that brightened it up considerably. I'd say it was probably one of the better Caesar Salads I've had recently. The oysters were terrific, too. They were prepared perfectly and were accompanied by a bunch of components that enhanced them considerably. And the fries were great, as well. What a cool fun place this turned out to and they do champagne tours !!! Very pink place ! Huge range of champagne obviously by the glass or the bottle. Nice little cocktail menu as well. And some great small plates. We thoroughly enjoyed our bar visit here. Fun music and great vibe. I'd go back and bring friends from out of town. The drinks are expensive. As you expect when you walk in. They have some interesting house special drinks that are worth trying. I've been going here every week for the past month...at this point I should probably get a frequent flyer card! It's my go to spot for taking out of town visitors / work friends for a different sort of experience, with a speakeasy reminiscent of the prohibition era and plenty of unique and delicious cocktails. It is an interesting spot in the Toronto area. It is well known for a "surprise" location in the back. Where do you need a secret password. You will need to ask the staff to go on a "champagne tour". The rest is a surprise. The food is quite tasty. We had some prawns and they were the largest shrimp I have ever had, and were very juicy and delicious. You have to find the right bottle to "open" the door to the secret passage way where you will "travel in time" to 1920s Paris! ** Note: I think if you plan to walk in, you have to discreetly ask to see the "Champagne Room"? I guess you gotta keep it down low or else you will be denied entry lol. ** ** And NO PHOTOS ALLOWED except in the bathroom lol ** ** It is also pretty busy inside, make sure you make a reservation online ** The hostess at the A Toi 'hotel reception' was fun and playful, I absolutely loved her character! The 'bell boy' then led us to our table :) Our waitress knows us by names, and made sure everything was running smoothly. There is an actor (or actors I'm not sure) roaming around the place too, see if you can identify and talk to them... could end up very magical lol ;) As for dinner, I didn't enjoy my main as much. Omg! Where do I begin! This bar has such an incredible atmosphere but you have to know where to sit. In the front of the bar it looks like a casual restaurant. Now, if you know the secret, ask to sit in the secret back room, you are in for a treat. The hostess will then tell you there are no photos allowed beyond this point. They pull a bottle and you will be transported into a speak easy will men dressed as bell hops and female employees in chic black outfits with fancy accessories. The ambiance The ambiance in the back is amazing. My friend and I loved the vibe and couldn't get enough of it. The Food: Such a disappointment. The waiter told me the steak was the best steak he has ever had. I tried it and found it lacked flavour. It tasted a bit bland and was only available with fries. I honestly wish I could have swapped the fries for a nice salad. My friend ordered the ravioli and she said it tasted okay but she would not order it again. Her dish arrived with three raviolis on her plate. All of the employees recommended the fish so I'm wondering if it is any better. Coming here I knew I had to go all out so I ordered a half dozen set of oysters with sweet chili and a glass of brut from Spain. I did right! Unfortunately I would not recommend this bar/restaurant to anyone due to the horrible service I received last night. The service was so terribly condescending to the point I felt compelled to write this review in order to inform people who might be tempted to try it like we did. My friends came to Toronto last night for Nuit Blanche. As it was still pretty early after we had dinner, we decided to go on a bar hop to warm up for the event. We decided to give this restaurant a go and luckily there happened to be a vacancy for us. Little did I know it was going to be the absolute most uncomfortable experience in my life in any restaurant. Their menu was a little confusing as we could not see the oysters so we asked your host to point out where the oysters were. To our surprise that seemed to be a difficult question as she told us she was not sure either. She took the menu and went to her colleagues to find out - a minute later she returned and told us the oysters were actually listed on the first page and the first 4 options listed were all oysters. OK. I understand she might not know the menu that well but when the first 4 choices are indeed the food item in the name of the restaurant, I found it surprising that my question was difficult. After looking at their menu for a minute we would like to order, and we were greeted by a waitress or a manager. We ordered some oysters but were not quite sure what to order for drinks so we asked this person who recommended Veuve Clicquot as she claimed it was the most popular choice. We then asked about the price and she replied that she was not sure as their customers would not "typically ask for the price". Those were exactly the words of the manager. Strike 1. Sorry we didn't fit your customer profile. As she was searching for the price painstakingly throughout their drink menu, she started asking us more questions. She asked us what the occasion was, and to that we replied we were just on a bar hop. She seemed rather annoyed by our answer, commenting "oysters and Champaign for a bar hop, OK", raising her eyebrow and emphasizing the OK at the end. Strike 2. After perhaps the longest minute in my life, she finally found the price of Veuve Clicquot in the menu and confirmed it was $180 (and she went the extra mile to let us know it was only the price of the non vintage one). We were not comfortable with it and she replied: "so what IS your budget then?" Strike 3. Thanks for asking; we can afford to spend $200 on a bottle of Champaign anywhere, else. We did not care to answer that question last night. We simply wanted to pay for the sparkling water and leave, after the 15 most uncomfortable minutes of my life. The Manager did waive the bill on the sparkling water (the food order had not been placed) - the very least anyone could do in any situation like that. Another late review - came here in November for a birthday. Definitely make reservations so you can get into the back speakeasy room - you won't be disappointed! When you originally walk in...it doesn't seem like anything fancy...but then...you are led to the back...into a secret chamber..to solve a riddle before the magical doors open up...and when they do..it's like night and day and you've stepped into a whole new world (cue the music). You won't be disappoint at all! This place is sexy and food is delicious. When you get in to the place it looks like a cute and fancy bar where there is actually an oyster bar and every bottle of Champagne you can imagine. THE PLACE There is actually a speakeasy/restaurant. If you decide to go to the restaurante, they actually take you to the cellar room where they explain you all about all the bottles if champagne they have. In that room is where the magic happens, they will open a secret door that takes you to a tunnel and appears in a lobby area that looks more like the check in area of a hotel. Right away you'll be able to see the beautiful space they have created for the restaurant. I'd describe it like a fancy yet intimate place. Pictures are not allowed in the area yet I was able to capture some pictures of my food. THE FOOD I had to order the oysters of course. They were tasty, salty and a good size. It comes with their own housemade hot sauce and they don't have tabasco sauce in case you were thinking to ask for it. I ordered a couple of dishes more that I wasn't able to get a pic but all of them were really good like the grilled sparragus and shrimp. I ordered the house burger. One of the best burgers I've tried in Toronto. Great brioche buns: buttery, eggy and delicious! It was perfectly browned/tanned on the outside The patty was cooked perfectly: medium rare and very juicy. Fries were crispy outside and soft and hot inside with some type of paprika spice, delicious!!! It came along with special gravy and the housemade hot sauce THE DRINKS They have great bar tenders that will be able to make any type of fancy and exotic drink for you. Great mixology team. I made a reservation on September 3rd to celebrate my wedding anniversary, approximately six weeks before the intended date. Out of the blue, I received a text yesterday that my reservation had been canceled because they're now closed for a private event. The offer was to reschedule significantly later that evening or a different day. I received a phone call within minutes of the text asking if I'd decided yet. The caller's demeanor could be described as brusque. We opted to cancel as none of the options fit into our travel plans. It's very disappointing to have the "reservation" unceremoniously canceled, but perhaps that's their purview when there's more money to be made. So many missed opportunities to match the service to the beautiful space...which is the ONLY reason this place gets 2 stars. The good: 1) our server. She was very upbeat and cheerful, with great energy. 2) the space. It's quite sexy, especially in the back. The speakeasy concept is cool. The terrible: OMG most of the staff and how they treat customers. From the front door "hosts" who talk to you like a toddler, to the person who jumped out of nowhere to tell me I was not allowed to take a picture (he actually came to the table to scold me. Lol) As a smoker, I walked outside to have a cigarette and was chastised (once again) for using the wrong door (ie: the door I came in from, marked with a green "exit" sign). So many "rules" you're expected to just KNOW. Food was mediocre. Not terrible, but nothing to write about. Bottom line: If you are into places where the staff is akin to those at Chuck-E-Cheese, then check this place out. Although I am an avid yelp user, my friend and I came here without realizing that it was a speakeasy. Whoops!!! We sat at the bar and had wine. I also tried their matcha latte. As we are about to leave, the greeter asks us if we wanted to see a different room. As my friend was from out of town, we were interested, but the greeter mentioned if we went there we would have to order drinks. Apparently we weren't allowed to go without ordering anything there (ie you can't just go in, check it out, and leave), despite the fact that we ALREADY ordered a few drinks at the bar! I sat for 15 minutes, mostly just browsing on my phone, before I was noticed and able to get the attention by one of the 8 bartenders in a bar with 11 guests (I was so bored I counted). When they finally took my order, they just forgot about me I think? The bartender who took my order proceeded to go hang out, dance and literally take shots over 10 minutes before I figured I wasn't getting my drink. I ended up leaving after 20+ minutes. This is something I might expect at a dive but not at a place if this calibre. I've never been before, am a pretty neutral person and was totally sober so I can't imagine a reason I was ignored other than sheer incompetence. I plan on coming back to update my review if and when I visit Toronto again. read more
