We waited for bus 67 for 40 minutes. One was at 5:05pm and the other bus was at 5:28pm. Both buses, even though there were only six people waiting and the buses had barely any passengers, completely passed the stops. When the first bus passed us, we ran to the next stop to flag the driver down and waved to them. The driver let people off and shut the door in our face. Me and my family are disappointed with the bus drivers and will not be recommending your service to others. This has put a damper on our experience in Newport, which we won't forget. read more

Don't take the 67 bus for mansions. It's a scam. They charge full parking. The drivers are not helpful and every mansion has free parking.

We took bus 67, which was free. This was our first time, and it was helpful to get around. The route doesn't travel on the road in front of the wharf, but it does travel on the road parallel to the wharf. So you get off and walk down the hill towards the shops, etc. We hopped off at the park, and it was very easy to get to the strip from there. It makes a stop at one of the beaches, too, which is nice, not having to worry about parking. read more

I live in Brooklyn so I was interested to see how traveling in Rhode Island by bus would work out and it was far more convenient than I expected. I was for the most part going from Warren to Providence's east side. Unlike New York there is no free transfer between busses but the fare is lower and transfers are only $1. I also discovered that if you buy a 10 ride pass, transfers are free. The busses go all over the state and while they don't run as regularly as in NYC, my waits were never over 30 minutes. I found all my drivers to be friendly and helpful and when I called customer service about an issue, they were equally helpful. The central hub downtown reminded me of Port Authority before they somewhat cleaned it up. They need a more visible PPD presence inside and outside of the station and adjacent park. Also there were no visible ticket agents at 3:30 PM yesterday afternoon when I was there. I read when my bus was supposed to leave but it arrived at a completely different time. Also be advised that unlike NYC, they don't run all night. Finally, the 10 ride passes are too flimsy and bend much too easily. So while RIPTA needs to address the aforementioned issues, I'll use them again next trip. 3.5 stars! read more

First, Kathy R is FABULOUS!!! She is pleasant, helpful, and informative. It's obvious that she loves her city and is happy to share it with visitors. Unfortunately, we didn't have Kathy as a driver on our 3 rides on the free tour trolley. Our first two trips were with a couple of men who were rude and unfriendly. The first rudely told us he would announce our stop. He lied. At no time did he announce any stops. We waited for 40 minutes for the second trolley. Yes, 20+ minutes late. RIPTA had no anunciators or digital signs so you had better know where you're going. The drivers don't even bother to announce stops. Also, their fake trolley system is a mess. The faade of the trolley is cute but doesn't hide the fact that it's still a cramped bus. One of the drivers scolded me for stopping his fake trolley, even though a RIPTA stop was clearly marked at that area. Their stop at Shaw's on the west side doesn't even have a sign, so I had to guess where the fake trolley stopped. Finally, RIPTA's signs don't even give a hint as to what BUS LINE stops there; there are no line number designations, no hints at all. And their signs at Garden City in Cranston, RI are at children's height, so they're very hard to find. Kennedy Plaza itself is a terrifying mess; all these teenagers dressed in gangster clothes around made the place feel very, very unsafe to be at night. The upside is that it was right next to a large police station, so police swarmed the plaza. Geez, even Los Angeles has a nicer "central station." Their "Key to the City" pass is apparently sold in very few places (Kennedy Plaza, for one) so be prepared to pay once you get on board one of their buses. read more

This was definitely STATE POLICE NEWS yesterday if not reported in the Providence Journal. I was one of many on RIPTA bus 21( I got on at Garden City , Cranston ) yesterday afternoon between 12;30 and 1:00 pm . A drunk and disorderly middle aged man ( looking homeless with a large bag ) starting ranting at passengers ( with frequent racial slurs and a sexual orientation slur directed at the female bus driver ). The alarmed bus driver stopped the bus right on the highway about a minute away from the Downtown Providence exit. Then the " maniac " started kicking the front service door and damaged it . " You are kidnapping me " , he shouted. . Would it have been wiser or even legal to let the angry psychotic man off on the highway ? He had not attacked anybody yet and he could have been injured leaving the highway. The STATE POLICE arrived within 10 minutes ( ? ) . The RIPTA supervisor on the scene had passengers fill out a card with an " incident " description. I said that the RIPTA bus driver handled the incident very well and that the poor man needed help . Later that night a friend returning from Boston and catching a RIPTA bus in Kennedy Plaza said he witnessed a " dead man " being taken out of a bus. You can understand how Kennedy Plaza could have inspired H.P. Lovecraft's " Horror at Red Hook " tale. read more

I use RIPTA out of necessity because I do not own a car. I usually try to plan for late/early buses (traffic I understand but buses leaving their stops 5 mins ahead of schedule is kind of ridiculous.) I was having issues with my old phone and activating the Wave pass. I know that RIPTA thinks they have fixed issues with their new system and made things better but they've actually made things worse. In order to have the pass work and have a working phone, I bought a new one. I already had a monthly pass, I just couldn't access it. Some drivers have been understanding and kind albeit know-it-alls telling me shit I already knew "you should open the app before you board" like no shit Sherlock, that's what I've been doing. This week while I was in between phones was particularly stressful. I tried to explain to the bus drivers my situation and even though I'd paid $70 for the bus pass this month, I went to an ATM and took out cash. However I did not plan on paying with cash all week and I work full time so I had to get change when I could since RIPTA had the bright idea of removing change cards and transfers. I'm not paying more than I should or losing money because of RIPTA thought they were clever "updating" their systems. My main issue is with how some bus drivers treat passengers. I'm not saying it's ALL the bus drivers, most of them are very kind, helpful and pleasant. However even though I take the same routes every day to work and back home, drivers that either don't recognize me or I haven't seen before act like I'm trying to get free rides despite showing them I had cash on hand and my app which wouldn't open. The worst was yesterday morning. The driver of the 33 bus was a complete asshole. I explained my situation and he said no. I said how am I supposed to get to work and he responded that wasn't his problem. I'll be honest that after a week of having drivers treat me like I'm incompetent and trying to cheat the system or whatever when I was a paying customer, I flipped out on him. I managed to get change from Nico Bella's, bless the staff there. 7-eleven apparently doesn't give single dollar bills which was the only way I could make sure I had exact change to pay my fare on the bus. I understand that bus drivers have to do their jobs and I don't expect them to give free rides but most of them if you explain your situation will let you go once or if the Wave card reader is acting funky. There was no reason for the driver to be so rigid. There should be a backup for the Wave pass. I cannot get a physical monthly pass from my job unfortunately so my only option is an unreliable mobile app. Yet another issue is that on my new phone, I can see that my monthly pass is active in the manage cards section of the app. So I cannot access the monthly pass that I bought and of course their customer service hours are the same as my working hours so I couldn't even call to complain or get assistance with this matter. I can't even buy another pass although it'd be fucked up I'd have to pay double for the same month but I can't because WAVE recognizes that I ALREADY bought a pass for this month. I know come Monday, the rigid rule stickler bus drivers that have a chip on their shoulders and are on power trips won't accept the fact that it's an app error, not user error. If I can't scan the monthly pass, they won't let me ride which means I cannot get to work. This is a huge problem and I'm sure I'm not the only rider who has dealt with this issue. I'd love to contact the customer service through email as well but I don't have the "security code" for my mobile Wave card that I didn't know I needed in the first place and was never set up. RIPTA is horrible. I don't see what the purpose of schedules are because only a handful of routes keep their schedules consistently. Most buses are always 5 to 15 minutes late (if the route shows up at all). No idea who's running the department that's responsible for scheduling but they need to go. Get someone in there that can do the job. Kennedy Plaza is a transportation HUB AND there's an Amtrak & Commuter Rail train station there. If you have to make a connecting bus or train...FORGET IT. Example: I take 33 bus from Riverside to Kennedy Plaza then the 60 bus out to Warren. The way the schedule is set up you will ALWAYS miss the 60 by 5 or 6 minutes. (no matter the time of day.. there isn't enough time allocated to account for traffic or anything like that) If traveling at night (after 6:30) you will stand outside for an hour until next 60 bus comes. That's ridiculous. How hard can it be to schedule so people can make their connecting form of transportation. If RIPTA was an airline or train company, they'd be out of business quick, fast, in a hurry. Suggest you do whatever you have to do to get a car or hope you have enough money to Uber around because you will always be late or will lose your job depending on RIPTA. Worst service I have ever seen. The schedule is awfully unpredictable. Lines get cancelled without warning, particularly past 6pm when people are riding the bus home. Line 19 is very bad and I got stuck in Providence over night multiple times. The online schedule/live tracker is inaccurate and misleading. Even when supposedly scheduled, sometimes the bus never shows up. Mornings (going inbound) are no exceptions but are not as bad. I personally cannot recommend riding with RIPTA, and I would certainly not dare riding in the winter when the awful schedule is also affected by the weather. read more

Using the RIPTA for the sole purpose of getting to the airport more than exceeded my expectations. I could have taken a cab for $25 - $30, but when I found out the RIPTA bus could get me there for only $2 and the stop was less than two blocks from my downtown hotel, my recessionista side kicked in. 25 minutes after boarding the almost empty bus, I was dropped off right at the terminal. I'll be honest. RIPTA is definitely not my bff. To back up for a sec here, peeps, I've used public transportation in many 'a places including (but not limited to), Philadelphia, Boston, NYC, Worcester, Pittsburgh, Portland & middle of nowhere Centre County (PA). The way I sees it, if a random county in the splat center of mountains, fields and cow country can get it right, why can't the oh-so spectacular state of RI even somewhat measure up? Broad St. sucks hardcore: the bus runs every 15 minutes or so & I can't even begin to count the number of times I've been denied entry due to total and maximum capacity being reached. Wow. The places where a route is badly needed, there are absolutely none and when there are, we'll be lucky if we see a bus once or twice a day. At the very least, one upon a century ago when 'lil ole me was a cute High School gal, bus passes for students had no restrictions, no time limitations and were totally free. Apparently, not anymore. I feel for those disadvantaged kids who might actually want to, you know, take an after school or weekend elective. Not cool, RIPTA. I genuinely wish I weren't coming across as completely bitter but honestly, my experiences over a very long, stretched out time period with these folks have been less than good. I've been treated to everything from being kicked off the bus for having a (covered) drink, completely ignored at a legitimate bus stop (drive by) and waiting for a connecting transfer that refused to show up (in trouble). I take the bus because I hate cars. I don't even know where to begin describing how pathetic RIPTA and the state of RI are. 1. We'll start with routes. They cut them on what seems to be an annual basis, if you don't live in PVD or go to URI the bus will only come at incredibly inconvenient times and will usually be late. And they wonder why so few people take it. 2. The trolley service. Usually it is timely but not the CCRI Providence campus/hospital route, no matter what time I waited for it, the bus drivers would kick their feet up and take a ten minute break (minimum). This sucks if you have work a half hour after class and it takes 20 minutes to get downtown to begin with. They seriously do this every time they stop and it blows my mind. They must spend hours a day on break. 3. The COST. Another reason I can see why people do not take it. Right now it's up to two dollars one way, even if you're on the friggin trolley! The monthly pass is $62. Are you kidding me? In addition to this, for a while they cut the student 50% discount on bus passes which is so bogus I can't even process it. Sixty two dollars for incredibly mediocre and inconsistent service. That doesn't even really get me anywhere that I need to be. I saw someone on here complaining about the "crackheads" and other people on the bus. Look, I don't doubt you've seen your share of crackheads on the bus, but did it ever occur to you that maybe some of these people are just poor? Thanks for perpetuating the negative stereotype that everyone who rides the bus is a drug addict. No Star! Horrible service! My child is a Freshman at URI, there were two incidents bus #64 and #66 leaving URI to Kingston Rail Road Station never arrived. I contacted RIPTA Customer Service line to inquire about the Sunday/Holiday schedule and they confirmed that RIPTA will be operating on Sunday/Holiday schedule and at 2:49pm, well the bus never arrived nothing and there were 5 other students waiting at the Kingston Rail Road Station, we waited 45 minutes and decided to call UBER. Awful service, not dependable, inconsistent, incompetent! What's the purpose of the bus service and especially when I filed a complaint, still no improvements! I have been riding RIPTA for 18 years. It is the most poorly run public transportation in the world. I have taken public transit all over the US and Europe and they are by far the worst. Here are some reasons. 1. Buses break down frequently and you have to wait forever for a replacement bus. 2. I have gotten into 2 minor accidents on RIPTA buses. This is worrisome. 3. At times the only place they announce service outages is on Twitter. 4. They change more for E-tickets than paper tickets. 5. No signage when bus stops have moved. Drivers get annoyed if you are not aware stop moved. 6. If riders threaten each other or fight. Bus drivers do not intervene. There are no consequences for bad behavior so you see quite a lot of it. This creates an atmosphere that does not feel safe at times. Finally I must say I do have respect for the drivers. I don't think they get support from management to help address these issues. I think they do the best they can with buses and they probably get little support from RIPTA if there is an incident on their bus. RIPTA is constantly spending money renovating Kennedy Plaza and not addressing some of these other issues. Most of RIPTAs riders probably have incomes that fall below the poverty line so I feel there is no effort to provide quality service. I feel that if RIPTA offered a better product more people would take public transportation which would have a positive impact on the environment. read more

I have lived in many cities in my life from San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, Houston, NY, Boston, and all others in between. RIPTA has to be the worst of the worst bus service I've ever encountered. The bus arrives late all the time. Budget cuts have cut entire routes and cut service time drastically. If RIPTA is your only way to get to work I hope to god you get to work on time and can get home. I've been late so many times to my job due to this shitty service. If you need a bus to get to work and you need to take two of them, be prepared to get up VERY early. What is normally a 15-20 minute car ride can easily stretch 1 hour 15 minutes between two buses and some massive wait time. I used to bus everyday from Providence to Newport (and back) for work. This is a 40-45 minute car ride. Because I needed two buses it took me a total of 1 hour and 38 minutes (including wait time) on weekdays. It took 2 hours and 9 minutes on Sundays and holidays. Uncle RIPTA will always pick you up... until it doesn't. If your RIPTA journey starts at Kennedy Plaza, you'll probably fare much better than someone who has to wait for a transfer. That's because the inbound buses are highly unpredictable, whereas the outbound buses always leave at the same time. Until they don't. Sometimes, you'll find yourself chasing down an outbound bus that left 5-6 minutes early. Then, magically, the next one comes 40 minutes late. You'll see up to 4 buses with the same number pull up at the same time. How on earth does this happen?? The bright side? The bus drivers are typically very efficient at what they do. As a rule of thumb, not on the books, but they will generally drop you off in a safe location, even if that means not right at your stop due to issues with snow or floods. The dark side? Kennedy Plaza. I think everyone at Kennedy Plaza must hate everyone else at Kennedy Plaza, because there are a lot of fights and a lot of hostility. There's a smoking area, which is not in the bus shelter, so naturally, all the smokers light up in the bus shelter. Kennedy Plaza management tried to do something about this and failed. read more

I have a love/hate relationship with Ripta. I take public transportation every day to get to and from work. Luckily, I live about a half mile from Kennedy Plaza so I can just walk. Transfers are a bitch! There are 2 busses that go by my place of employment so I can usually get there when I need to during the week. For some reason Ripta thinks people only travel after 8am and before 7pm on the weekends tho. They seem to keep hiking up the rates while cutting service. It's $65 for a monthly pass which is outrageous because just north in Boston it's $70 and that includes the buses and a subway system. Busses are usually on time. If they are late it's usually only by a few minutes. Something that I feel anyone who uses public transit should prepare for. The drivers deal with crazy people all day so I can understand why they may come off harsh. I've found a simple "Hello, how are you?" when you board and a quick "Thank you" when you exit does wonders. I usually see the same drivers each day. Being friendly everyday goes a long way when you can't find your pass. I've been given an 'emergency transfer' a few times just because I took the time to say "Hi." read more

If you work downtown and your employer doesn't have a lot or pay for you to park then you're looking at spending @ least $160-200/month for a spot. A monthly RIPTA pass is $62. I'd rather pocket the savings and go on a trip w it. The buses are clean, unless some lazy person has left their 7-Eleven extra jumbo freezy drink container on the seat. Buses are at times late, but are timely for the majority. Drivers friendliness is 50/50. They also deal w a lot of bungholes so I get it. One lady gives me a hard time if I don't flag her down. She gets all sorts of sassy and says she doesn't know if she needs to stop if we don't indicate to her w a waving hand.... I'm sorry, I'm standing at a friggen bus stop w 5 other ppl! Oh and if you're running to make it to the bus stop but are 20 ft away and flag the driver down 75% of them will just shake their head and keep going. Some drivers have road rage and aren't good drivers, I've seen some break hard and fast and ppl actually fall over on the bus as a result. But I love a couple of the guys. They say "hi" and "have a good day" and know how to drive. Kennedy plaza is absolutely disgusting and as a woman you can't walk through wo getting harassed. But they are presently cleaning it up, thank god and way to go :) They recently dropped a bunch of stops which is irritating. I only live 5 miles from downtown and even I need to at times walk .25 miles or more. I run 20 plus miles a week, so I'm not lazy but if you're running late, wearing heels and a skirt, it's raining or it's winter and dark and freezing then it sucks. Especially when there was a stop right outside my door. But I continue to take the bus. I've seen some crazy crap on RIPTA and I love sharing the stories. Rip ta bus drivers staff has their attitude at times and at other times there good, meaning taking control on the bus for people to sit down and to move to the back because some people are rude when getting on the bus they just want to stand up in the front in the way when there's room for them to move back, and when they have their negative attitude that's what doesn't get controlled they just get smart with you when you ask them a question and some drivers have a habit of closing in the door on pedestrians when getting on the bus its like they don't want to let you on ,and they also don't wait till pedestrians sit down before driving off, and some will just drive pass your stop. Ripta should also put the electronic bus schedule on each bus stop like the ones they had up before down at Kennedy Plaza. Also needs to have a speed limit. And another thing you guys should let pedestrians who have a hard time lifting their shopping carts and luggage's to use the ram an especial when its packages to be dropped off at staples ,one last thing you guys should get a hose and some cleaners to wash the inside and outside of the buses when they aren't running to get the rid of all that funkiness also bus drivers need to have strict rules about bringing food and drinks on the buses to all pedestrians not some,Because some pedestrians like to come on the bus with their drinks and food and sometimes they don't have lids on their cups and their in conversation and not even watching what their doing. read more

Unless you're at the end of a bus route, you cannot rely on a bus coming at its scheduled time. Even if they were to follow the schedule, they only come once every 30 minutes. Oh and if you live/work outside of Providence, your ride may only come twice a day if at all. One more thing...don't expect to be able to take PT too late because they stop running pretty early. One time, I wasn't allowed on the bus because I had a pizza with me -- in a pizza box -- closed. I was bringing it back to my DORM and use the bus because that was my means of transportation. We had to wait 45 minutes for the next bus, oh and it was winter. OTHER than that jerk ruining it, RIPTA bus drivers are usually such sweethearts. I hated riding the bus because of the people on there -- I swear to god, everyone always was sick! Coughing all over the place, or just crazy.
