I like to tip in cash. Uber should not make credit card tipping mandatory. They should also have a comment section where the customer can state that they tipped in cash. Uber is helpful transportation, but their customer service is absolutely horrible. I feel like you never know how much they're going to charge you. You're at the mercy of them charging you even if you have credits and they didn't apply them. Getting a hold of customer service is difficult. You have to jump the hurdle of the chat bot and a live agent is only available over chat. The live agents rarely resolve your issue. I've had to go through my bank several times for disputes. I have been using Uber for several years now. It started as a nice way to get from point A to point B in a nice clean car with a decent person on the wheel. Now when you search for a fare, you get many different options to choose from..... In the past several years, they have really focused on the surge/demand model, where a ride that could cost at low demand time $10, could be $90 at peak times....it's incredible !!! When we arrive at the airport and need a ride home, we open both Uber and Lyft to check both rates....also, I check for the bus schedule to see if the express bus is coming soon....and I also consider calling a cab. Cabs charge by the mileage, so they are a better option when dealing with Uber's peak time/surge pricing. Please do your homework. On May 2, 2025, I went online to https://uber.com to request a ride from Mineral Spring Ave in North Providence to Lincoln RI with one stop at a different location on Mineral Spring Ave in North Providence. I scheduled the ride for 9 a.m. The ride was not here by 9 a.m. or 9:05 a.m. As a result, my roommate ordered the Uber from her phone. The driver was "1CN 431" in a White Nissan Altima. We first received the message that he was three miles away. Ten minutes later he was not here. Then we received that he was six miles away. Again he was not here even in fifteen minutes. Last we received he was 11 minutes away. The time and mileage continued to go back and forth and did not make sense. As a result we cancelled and called Lyft. Lyft was right on time. The Uber driver should be reprimanded or fired for this. He caused me not to make it to work. And now I might be fired because of this issue. My own vehicle is in the shop which is why I tried to use Uber. Please put all of my money back onto my card. read more

Yesterday was my first bad Uber experience. I was charged $25.51 for what turned out to be just under a four-mile ride. I had no alternative means to get to my destination, so I agreed to the fare. Bad decision. Uber claimed heavy traffic (not true). i complained to the driver; wrote a complaint to Uber while on my way. Then I got a message saying my fare was actually $13 (still ridiculous), but charge showed up as $25.51. have not heard back from Uber and doubt that I will. A very unsatisfactory experience. I would like to challenge this but it is extremely difficult to figure out how to reach a live customer service person. i felt as though they had me at my mercy - even if they calculated the fare in error, there has to be a viable way to customer complaint and resolution process. read more

The Uber scene has really picked up here and I'm grateful for it. Most people use it as a way to avoid a DUI which I think is great. Now that more and more places are opening up downtown, more and more people are going out on weekends (and sometimes weekdays). At most hours, you're able to get an uber without an issue but like most places don't expect someone to drive you to New York at the wee hours of the morning. I have had success with people taking me to Boston but it is common curtesy to let people know where you are traveling ahead of time (drivers don't know your destination until they accept your pick up). Do you tip? I think that is a person to person preference. There is never an obligation but from time to time I will give a little something for exceptional service. read more

When Uber was first introduced to Providence, I guess the selection process for drivers and the level of professionalism those drivers exhibited was taken a bit more seriously. However, since the introduction of UberX to the roster, I have noticed a bit of a decline in their service. Sorry, guys but I can't look past the drivers who have no idea where they are going. One request to be taken to the Providence Biltmore was met with a blank stare and a "where's that?". I understand if I have to give general directions to a private home or even a smaller local business, but the Biltmore? I thought everyone who lives in Providence knew where that was... It's a landmark! A little preparation for a job to drive people around (and maybe a little polish when it comes to presentation and even the selection of music playing) when you're getting paid for a professional service would be a much appreciated improvement. I still love the concept and the ease of Uber, but I am not totally loving every single driver and experience I have. Goodbye, TF Green airport taxi. Hello, Uber. I used Uber for the first time a couple of weeks ago, for transportation to and from the airport. Normally, I'd use the airport's own taxi service, which runs about $20 for a one-way, 15-minute ride. While Uber is indeed a bit more expensive, the service does justify commanding a slightly higher price. To begin, there's the convenience factor. Simply download the app onto your phone and enter your vitals, as well as a credit card. Type in an introductory promo code, if you have access to one, and voila! You're off and running, ready to Uber - with, hopefully a $20 credit in your account. When you're ready for a pickup, type in the address where your driver will find you; and you'll see a map pop up onscreen with all the Uber cars dotting your 'hood. The closest one that's free to come and get you will be dispatched, along with a very accurate countdown on when you can expect them to arrive at your doorstep (don't think you can squeeze an extra minute or two running around inside your place; these drivers are prompt!). Unlike a traditional taxi service, your driver can't be diverted or tempted to tack on an additional fare while on the way to retrieve you; their sole focus is you and they aren't allowed to deviate, so you can bet they'll be there on time. Uber communicates with you immediately via text when your ride is on its way. The driver may also call you directly while on approach, and texts or calls upon arrival as well. I'll admit, I was a bit anxious for my first Uber experience: after all, a stranger was coming to take me somewhere, driving his own personal vehicle. Isn't this what we're instructed as children expressly never to do, under any circumstances? However, my fears were allayed by Uber's reputation in the market, as well as its commitment to transparency. For example, you're able to see a small photo of your driver and his name, along with the make, model and license plate number of your Uber car, before it arrives; this, along with the rigorous background checking of the Uber drivers (many of whom worked for cab companies prior to working for Uber), ensures a safe and professional experience. When your reach your destination, there's no need to exchange any cash - not even for a tip! Uber factors all of that into your bill, which you receive in seconds via email. Your electronic receipt is a detailed listing of all charges associated with your trip: you're charged a base fare, along with charges associated with the number of minutes in your journey, total distance, and in my case, an additional $3 airport surcharge, whether you're getting dropped off or picked up there. My first trip to TF Green would have cost $29 were it not for my promotional code; for $9, it was a fantastic steal. Along with your receipt, you have a chance to review your driver with a 1-5 star rating (not unlike Yelp!), and any comments you wish to make. Your driver, too, has a chance to rate you; courteous behavior goes both ways, folks! Even more exciting, you're given a promotional code that you can then share with friends--and the person who signs up for Uber using that code automatically receives $20 off THEIR first ride. And, guess what? In turn, when your friend's first Uber ride is complete, the rewards come back to you: with another $20 in referral credit added to your account (this is how I structured my airport round trip). Way to pay it forward, Uber! The return trip home from Green Airport would have been $33; instead, it was $13--still a financial win, in comparison to a traditional taxi. Both of my Uber rides have been very pleasant; friendly drivers with whom I actually had conversations, and cars that were also wonderfully warm on frigid winter days, and also, clean (save for a tiny chunk of candy cane on the passenger seat of my first ride that got stuck to my sweater- icky, but I suppose it could have been far worse, particularly in a city cab or on the bus). Would I Uber again? Yes, under certain circumstances. While I don't think I'll forego traditional cabs and public transportation entirely, Uber runs rings around the competition in terms of reliability, friendliness, and ease of use. Mini-update: per Uber, there is a $12 minimum fare in place for UberX in Providence. ----------------------- I've used Uber in different cities, I'll only speak to my Providence usage: PROS: Clean cars, professional drivers, fast pickup, low hassle, easy to use app, love having ETA info (no longer at the mercy of a dispatcher) and GPS info to verify how far a driver really is from picking you up (Note: I've had some cabbies still get a little lost even w/ the GPS, especially in Boston. Really depends on who you get.) CONS: Surge pricing = when weather sucks, prices get jacked up. I inputted an online coupon code, found a better code after the fact, and Uber wouldn't allow me to use the better code b/c the previously inputted one was active. Bogus. Cabs were lined up and available at the train station for pick up, but in this case I decided to wait for Uber to see how the service compared to the typical gypsy cabs in Providence so I did have to wait longer than I needed to. My first Providence trip ended up costing double what I would have paid had I used one of the gypsy cabs lined up outside the train station. This was a premium higher than other cities in which I've used Uber. Overall, until more competition like Lyft ride sharing service comes to Providence, I'll likely use Uber again for trips originating from my home even at the price premium. To me, since call-in cab service in Providence in general is so unpredictable and sometimes abysmal, it's worth the cost esp if I'm in a time crunch. But if a taxi is readily available like at the train station, I'll probably choose the taxi bc of price. Just keep an eye out for those Uber online coupons kids and save some money. read more

I needed to take my car to the airport and pay for parking. In a city with terrible taxi services, Uber is a blessing. Uber has recently come to Providence and last I checked only offers UberX here, which is the service that allows locals to provide rides instead of their usual black car service. When using Uber around the US I usually prefer UberX anyway, as it's cheaper and the drivers are more interesting to talk to. I've used the service 3 times now in Providence with excellent results. I have never waited more than 5 minutes for a pick-up. This is in contrast to the 30 to even 40 minutes that I've had to wait for services like Big Daddy Taxi and Silver Star Taxi. Plus, I KNOW that a taxi is on the way with Uber. There have been way too many times when the Providence taxi companies have repeatedly lied to me that a taxi is "on its way" and will arrive in "less than 5 minutes." If you aren't familiar with the Uber service the idea is this: You register your credit card with the app, you hail a taxi from your app which shows you where that taxi is and its ETA, you get in the taxi, you get to your destination, a receipt is emailed to you. No tipping or credit cards or getting change necessary! It is slightly more expensive, but the convenience is definitely worth it. In Providence, Uber is easily the best choice. I had pinned a specific location for my Uber Driver to pick me up. The App said he was 2 minutes away but took him almost 6 minutes before he arrived barely even near my location. Looking at the App I seen that his car was parked a distance away from me, so I messaged him my exact location but never responded and right after cancelled the trip. Which then charged me $5.00 because of Uber's policy, this was my first ride and it wasn't starting off great. Long story short I emailed Uber and they corrected everything and was reimbursed my money. This is a review by a first time Uber customer. We flew into Providence on our way to Newport during the second week of December. I had read the horrible reviews about the Orange Cab Shuttle and the taxis were dopey expensive for a 45-minute drive to Newport. I was worried what we would do when we got to PVD, so I signed up for Uber the night before. We gathered our stuff and I pondered. My sweetie asked for my phone and requested Uber. Jose answered the request. He told us where to meet him. He was there in five minutes. Jose was as professional as a limo driver. Friendly and courteous as he put our bags in his trunk, opens doors for you and drove a very nice vehicle that was spotless. We told him where we were going and he had no problem getting us to the location in Newport. He answered questions about the area helpfully. The fare was only $38. Far short of all the other quotes I had received. Since there is no Uber in Newport we asked him how to get a ride back to the airport when we were leaving. He gave us his private cell number and to text him the night prior needing to leave. He was there a half an hour early and dropped us in front of our airline desks. I cannot say enough about the first and last experience we had with our visit to Rhode Island. Jose started it off wonderfully and finished it equally as terrific. Do not use Uber at the Providence airport. It requires you to walk IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET ON A BLIND CURVED ROAD to get to where they are allowed to pick you up. I don't mean cross the street in a blind curve. No, I mean walk in the street for about 10 minutes because there is no sidewalk access. Lyft is a much better choice. First off I love the concept off this! I finally had a situation come up where I could call on Uber. I was downtown without access to my car and wanted to go home for lunch, I live right outside of the city but still in Providence. I set up my account on Uber, very easy! When I was ready to be picked up I made the selection to be picked up on the app. Two - three minutes pick up time and a description of the car was provided so I could look out for my ride. I was picked up promptly by a compact sedan, the driver was a young guy and I took a seat in the back. He was friendly and the car was fine. We chatted about the route and so I decided since he was fine with me giving directions I would do just that! The ride was good and I was home for lunch, exactly what I wanted! Newport RI uber is awful. Some friends and I tried to get a ride to a show, that we missed, because the website was bad and hard to navigate. Maybe that was our fault but later we tried again to get a ride home with the help of someone who has used the app before, we get a notification that our ride will be there in 4 mins then the driver cancelled. We were stranded on the side of the road in the cold with no ride. We already missed our show because of uber and now we can't get home. We ended up using orange cab and got where we needed to. The taxi companies simply did not provide basic services when I first moved here one year ago: it was impossible to get a driver last minute/early morning/away from downtown.
