It was easy to set up my Uber account and with the touch of a button you have a taxi with no need to handle cash. The theory is amazing. However, thats not really whats going on. I've been taking Uber A LOT over the last two months because of the mega snow we've been having in Providence. Every time there is a fare hike. Okay... fine I get it. UNTIL... I got into a car and a driver told me on numerous occasions that they have been sitting in their cars with no rides while a hike was in place. Uber is scamming so they can get more money b/c they know people have to call. Ok.. I get it. You're in business to make money. Scummy but I get it. However, as of late their customer service has SEVERELY gone down hill. I've gotten into some cars with drivers that are clearly NOT meant to drive in Providence or serve the public. Clearly with a surge in popularity, the company is just taking on any random riff raff that comes along. Case in point... I got into Youssry black Toyota Camry,license plate 5109(listed incase anyone else gets this car) this weekend and I told him my address and then entered it in the app. I asked him to take a certain route. He told me "I know where I'm going" in a very rude tone. I asked that he make a Uturn instead of driving down four blocks and turning back. He told me he knows where my street is. I decided to let it go. It was midnight and I had just worked 14 hours. We approached a light two blocks away and I asked him to go through the light instead of turning to avoid the lights and traffic on Broadway. He said "no!". I asked him again. He reversed the car, put the car in park, and told me he was going the way he wanted. I again asked him to go straight. He told me it was his car and I had no right to ask him anything. He then turned the corner yelling for me to just let him drive since he is the driver. As a rider, I have the right to choose which route I'd like to go home and not feel like I'm being abducted by some man with a foul attitude. Afterall, it is a service that I am paying for and I wasnt asking him to drive through a mine field. It was horrendous. Then he proceeded to speed up Broadway like a maniac. I was opting to take a cab so I wouldnt have to walk home alone but I think I would have been less terrified on the street alone. There should be a way to choose which driver NOT to ride with. Also, there should be someone you can call at their company when you're in the back of a madman's car. If you have another option, ANY other option, please take it!!! read more

Trying to get a cab to the airport used to be a huge hassle. However, since Uber arrived in Providence, it has been a piece of cake. All of the drivers have been professional and friendly. The quality of the cars has really varied. I've ridden in everything from an old Camry to a towncar. Generally cars are pretty clean. Prices are extremely reasonable and much less than a cab. I can usually pay $25-30 to go to the airport using Uber, but have to pay $35 when I take a cab from the airport home. read more

Thank goodness for Uber. During an eventful, boozey weekend spent in the PVD I was in dire need of some safe transport and Uber gave it to me. The cabs in the city, even those fun ones with the sparkly unicorns on them (you know the ones) just aren't that reliable, especially if you need a ride to come to you. My ride was great. My driver was hospitable and friendly, warned me before letting me out that we were in a sketchy area of the city and to stay aware of my surroundings (he did this in a caring way, not a condescending one) and made sure I made it into the restaurant he dropped me off at before leaving. What excellent, compassionate service! I used the Groupon sign-up special so I started my Uber ride with $25 in my account but I didn't have to pay anything because they ran a special that weekend for first time trips being free. There is a $12 minimum to go anywhere in Providence, but in this weather a warm, comfortable ride is well worth a few dollars. If you haven't tried Uber yet, you definitely need to download the app and give it a whirl. ETA: Tips are not included in the Uber fare and are accepted by drivers but unfortunately, not facilitated by the app so they'd have to be in cash. read more

Had my first experience with Uber this morning. So incredibly better than my experience with taxis! No aggravated dispatcher telling me no one will be available for however long. Made my request, Uber informed me that there was a driver 7 minutes away, sent me his picture and the make of his car. They informed me when he was 2 minutes away and when he arrived at my house. He was polite and friendly but not the kind of in your face friendly that is off-putting. His car was in excellent condition and very clean. Thank God.....an excellent taxi alternative! read more

Uber is 1/2 the price of a regular cab. We took an uber out and then a regular cab back and it was double to take the cab back. Uber is cheaper and BETTER! Uber allows you to pay with an app so you don't have to worry about cash. And we knew who was showing up and when. Car and driver were great- on time and courteous! DISAPPOINTED: I use UBER at least once a week if not more than that and today... a ride that normally costs $14-17 cost $39.00 When I reached out to UBER they told me that the time I was traveling was high demand and this was surge pricing- It was 4:30 in the AM going to the airport in Providence.. there were at least 6-8 other cars available. As an Uber driver, I can state unequivocally that Uber is a rider-friendly business that not only favors the rider but also unfairly limits driver income. By stating that tipping is not obligatory, Uber ultimately insures that drivers never get tipped. As a matter of fact, tips are usually given by approximately 4-5% of riders. Taxi drivers are tipped. Valets are tipped. Parking garage attendants are tipped. Pizza delivery guys are tipped. But not Uber drivers. Also, we are not paid to pick up riders, some of whom we may drive 10, 15, or 20 minutes just to pick them up. We are only paid to drop them off, and drivers only receive 75% of the fare. Plus, drivers need to purchase their own gas and insurance and upkeep of the vehicle, and pay for data on their phones so that they can use the Uber app GPS to make sure the rider gets to their destination using the shortest possible route. After over 100 trips giving riders what they want, I have been tipped 4 times. Yet my ratings are almost always 5 stars. To make matters worse, my hourly wage, after adjusting just for gas payments, is under $8 per hour. No wonder Uber is always looking for drivers. You can't make a decent living driving for Uber. Until Uber removes their "tipping is not obligatory" stance, driving for Uber will have an extremely high turnover rate. Not something that will engender responsible or efficient service. And if you are a rider, why not tip someone for the service they provide? read more

My last ride with uber was a ride I have done over 8 times in the last 18 months. I was charged double on last ride. The drivers gps had him going in a route that was twice the miles for no apparent reason. I corrected his route to the best way but was still charged the double amount. I contacted Uber how was not willing to correct the gouging. It could have been the driver or the app. Either way I hope this isn't going to be a trend. read more

Have always been a huge fan of Uber, which has not let me down once...That was until this past Saturday when a friend and I made a responsible decision to call an uber and not drive impaired, which shortly I realized it would have been a far more safe trip then getting in the car with this driver. Not only did he drive on the WRONG side of a very busy road that had a 5 feet median, he continued down for about a mile until the high median dropped, tried to jump the curb which got us stuck...when we eventually got to the right side of the road he continued to scream at us and ABANDONED us on the side of the road in providence. Thank god a passing taxi driver watched the entire thing happened and picked us up. I will never take an uber again or EVER recommend this form of transportation to anybody read more

I will absolutely never use uber again!!! My friend and I chose to be responsible and use uber to take us to providence for Halloween. The ride there was fine, the charge from coventry to providence was only $30.00. That's fair enough. The ride home however, was the same exact trip. The only huge difference was the price hike. Now my charge was $191.00 just for the ride home. I contacted uber about the issue and their excuse is that they have to charge more for rides when the drivers are limited. By charging more for the ride, we are ensured a driver. I dint know how that makes sense. You either have a driver that's available or you don't. UBER IS THE WORST COMPANY BY FAR. A cab would have been cheaper. This company needs to be reprimanded for these obscene charges and shut down. I don't make a lot of money and just wanted to do the right thing and not drive. I have used Uber several times before and was more than satisfied; but the last two requests were not very good. Last week I needed a ride to go home from a doctor's appointment, and the website kept going to the wrong address for the pick up and I had to pay $5 for a canceled ride. Yesterday I called for a ride to the doctor and the pick up address kept moving: I could not get a confirmation and on my iPhone screen I saw a car going around the East Side completely lost. I had to drive myself to my appointment. Uber is not as reliable as I thought. read more

I find that the Uber car service app is now truly the best way around Providence. There are cars all over and they are cheaper, cleaner, and nicer than the shady cab companies in the area. I downloaded the app and put in the code 'MovingBoston'(I know different city, codew works though). It took less than a minute and I got a great free ride. Good luck! read more

If you don't want to pay over 5 times more then a normal taxi. Don't call uber they paint to you everything like gold color but then when you see the truth it is like shit color.I have experience my sister in law called them ,once you get in the car there were a lot of tricks tricks tricks. I used to be a frequent Uber user and used to receive high quality service from Uber. Prior to last month, I would only use Uber as my mode of transportation in the Providence area. About a month ago, I decided to try Uber XL in Providence. IT WAS THE WORST EXPERIENCE I HAVE EVER HAD WITH UBER. I was traveling 25 miles to the airport. When the driver arrived, he told me to put my bags in the car as he stood there and watched. Since the airport was only 25 miles away, and the only airport in Providence, I assumed my driver would know where we were going. I WAS WRONG! He tried dropping me off in the back of the airport on the runway. He didn't know where the passenger drop off was and even told me to tell him where to go. He then proceeded to run a stop sign and was stopped by airport security. I had to actively ask the security officer where passengers were supposed to be dropped off; I nearly missed my flight! There was a surcharge for the trip and the entire experience was a $90 charge. I had numerous email exchanges with customer service in which I was practically told how to use the app. Like I said, I am a frequent Uber user and had even used Uber 2 times earlier that day! I was furious that instead of addressing the issue, they spend time explaining to me how to use the app!!! There was even a point where the customer service agent neglected to respond to me for 5 days in which I had to contact them once again. Uber does not have a customer service phone number so all communication is through email. I would not recommend Uber XL to anyone in the Providence area! Uber X is a more affordable option and from my experience, provides much better service. After my horrible experience, I will not be using Uber again for a very long time. read more
