Be away from this funeral Home!!! We made a pre-arrangement for funeral services for my father. We signed all the documents. After that, we DID NOT receive the bank statements like other funeral homes do. We went personally to the office several times. We called and sent emails to the administrator "Michelle Ortiz" several times. She did not respond or return any of my phone calls or emails. We realized that they did not deposited the money for future funeral arrangements in several moths something that is illegal. They sent us documents and statements barely legible. It looked like a personal account. We could not even read the name and the account number. We requested a transfer to another funeral home, the difference is like a night and day. RG Ortiz Funeral Home is a very SUSPECIOUS business please do not use them for any future services. read more

We selected this Ortiz location in Williamsburg for its location, size and low cost. It would have been better to pay more and have a viewing with dignity for our loved one. There was mismanagement with the arrangements from the beginning. Ortiz did not contact our church to let them know we were booked for a 10am mass until we went in person to the church to confirm. Ortiz was confused with an earlier funeral mass they scheduled for the same morning as ours at 9am. On the eve before the viewing we received a call from the funeral home telling us that we should consider a closed casket because they were having a hard time putting make up on our loved one. I don't understand why since there was nothing wrong with our deceased relative's face when he passed away. Turns out the funeral had sprayed something black on his head to give the appearance of hair. Our loved one was a proud bald man and everyone knew him that way. His lips looked horrible and makeup color was completely off. It was a very hot day and the black paint dripped down the side of his face. At the last minute we had to scramble for a huge photo to display since there was no way we were going to have an open casket. That was a major insult and disrespect to our family and friends. I suspect that whoever attempted the makeup does not have training or a license. The morning of the funeral mass we were rushed out of Ortiz only to arrive at the church while the mass for the earlier deceased person was midway through. It was so awkward and we did not have a choice but to block in the cars from the earlier mass. We were also rushed after our mass and at the burial site. Speaking of burial sites, Ortiz tried to steer us toward a cemetery that looked horrible and unkept. Oh, and they do not provide limousines for the family. If a dignified send off is important for your loved one, go somewhere else. read more

I must say every review written of this establishment is indeed very similar to my experience! Avoid this establishment if you can. I lost my father recently. He was a long time resident in the neighborhood & my step-mother insisted on holding the services at Rg Ortiz Funeral Home so all his friends could attend the services. I felt a knot in my throat the minute I walked in and saw the place! I disliked the funeral home the minute I step foot through those doors. The place is filled w/ poor carpeting, stained ceilings, falling wallpaper, dusty tables, uneven doors & etc. It broke my heart because I know for a fact this funeral home was not sympathetic to my family's pain and most importantly did not treat my father's body with dignity and respect. I too had to pay in cash! We had to request for water to be placed on the cooler several times. We had to deal w/ Marisol's son who rode his bicycle up and down the hall while my father laid in his cheap casket. There is also no private office. She asked several questions which Marisol she wrote all of my father's info on a regular notebook which I too used in grammar school. When I asked why the only form of payment was in cash, Marisol gave me a vague response. My dad wished to be cremated. As she explained the process of when we can go pick up my father's remains she says "it will come in a box like this...." as she taps a box where another person's human remains were placed---right above her desk on top of a shelf! What a cold woman I thought! I asked her if there were any urns we could place his ashes instead, she showed me 1 which cost over $500. Marisol went on to encouraged me to buy an urn online and bring it back to her and they would place my father's ashes on the urn of my choosing. I also asked if they had picked my father's body from the hospital, she said "yes." I asked "do you have his body here?" She said "no." Chills went down my spine! Where was my father! I pictured him in a warehouse God knows where! The funeral home did not offer a car service for us so I was left to also hire a car service to pick my step-mom up at the funeral home, take us to St. Michael Cemetery and take my step-mom back home. The person who drove my vehicle with my father's body/casket did not appear as I have seen funeral service men. His suit was 2x as big as he was! Once again, I said my father deserved better! But I couldn't fight with his wishes and my step-mother's. The worse as well was when I called Marisol 2 days later to ask her if I can pick my father's remains at St. Michael's cemetery. She informs me "his remains arrived this morning..." I almost fainted! She didn't even called to inform us my dad's remains were in her possession. That same day I drove to Brooklyn to collect my father's remains. I refused to have his ashes placed above her desk for her own personal display! She had me sign my name on another white spiral notebook. For all she knew I could have signed "your mama..." on this notebook. You could barely read every other signature on this notebook! I wish state officials would go to this funeral home and assess their files & procedures. There has to be a better way to serve this community! It is unfair and inhumane. Many may read this and say... well there were other funeral homes we could have chosen but we couldn't. This place was of their personal choice b/c of how convenient it is located to everyone who knew my dad! I pray for those who have to go through such horrible experience. Not only will they hurt for the loss of their loved ones but will also be forced to receive poor level of care and service for their dear love ones. read more

If you are reading this, you have my condolences: both on the loss of your loved one and on the mere consideration of Ortiz Funeral Homes. They should rename it The Step Sisters Funeral Home, since this is the company Cinderella's stepsisters would have used on the occasion of the demise of their unloved stepsister. Marisol, the employee that "assisted" was not the sharpest tool in the shed. She did not even grasp the basic details: though my friend's father was the one that had passed, she recommended that we chose a dress with a high collar or scarf so that the lower portion of his neck was covered. I suppose his cross-dressing days reemerged post his death! While the company may have some type of published collateral with prices and services offered, it was never provided. She was writing everything down, by hand, in a three ring spiral notebook. Just like the ones I used in seventh grade! She was making so many errors on the documentation, that nearly every line had whiteout on it. Eventually the notebook became her scratch pad: we would spell words out, she would write them in the notebook. We would correct her spelling, THEN she would write it on the form. My friend and his sister both identified themselves clearly, and yet, when her incompetence came to a point of ludicrously and we all laughed, she asked: "Are y'all family? 'Cause you act like it." It was clear she was not really listening to anything they were saying. She strongly urged against a service at the time of cremation. At this point, she presented herself as a friend: "I'm"m only being honest with you, and telling you what I would like someone to tell me. It costs a lot of money, and it's only for 20 minutes." My friend and his sister, agreed, only to later find out that their family had expected one. If she had taken her role as educator and adviser seriously, she would have explained the purpose and meaning of this service, and most likely they would have agreed to have one. Her persuasion against it makes me assume that the funeral home profits little from it, and thus not worth their time. As would be expected, the family was under duress. This was made extremely evident by the watering eyes, the red noses, etc. And yet, during the entire discourse, Marisol did not express even the simplest act of compassion. Her demeanor was as if we were discussing the purchase of a used car. Very odd. We chose the back room for the viewing. It was in desperate need of updating: green vinyl chairs, gummed-up and stained carpeting, several ceiling tiles were water stained, and mismatched sofas. It's only saving grace was it was poorly lit: camouflaging many other flaws. The funeral home only accepts cash. I find this practice highly suspicious and unkind. To expect a family to bring thousands of dollars in cash, shortly after the death of a loved one seems extremely insensitive and greedy. We were told that clothing needed to be dropped off by noon the day before the viewing, at 8:00 am my friend received a phone call: "This is Ortiz Funeral Home. Where's his clothes?" I think what bothered me the most was the way my friend's father was presented. I understand heavy makeup was needed, but there were a number of places that appeared patchy. They missed a section on the top of his bald head, so it looked extremely pale in comparison. There were also red marks around his nose and upper lip. There was also lint on his suit jacket. All of these things demonstrate a lack of craftsmanship and pride. My friend's father deserved better. The lack of compassion and sympathy the employees displayed was disappointing. After the viewing two cleaning employees attempted to shoo us out, and while they tried to be kind, it was apparent they were poorly trained and lacked the tact and sensitivity needed to deal with grieving family members. Honor your loved on the right way. Do yourself and your family a favor and choose any one of the other funeral homes in the area. read more

The funeral home is clean, the price is also affordable as to other funeral places. Funeral homes are the portals to new existence since the soul never dies, all souls are eternal. Death is a very real thing, I had made peace and love with death, it is the most natural event that we all are gonna experience and can't escape, so why fear it?... When the Angel of Death knock on our door, there is no way to escape it. Sometimes, I think about the way, when, and how I will die, just being curious, how is my life going to end?... not in a worrying way but more in a curious way. I am surely ready for death, not that I am calling it, but I just know is gonna happen at anytime because it is part of nature to die and go on spiritually. Of course, while I am here in my existence, I do enjoy and love life, with a different point of view, loving and experiencing life in an unconditionally and unattached loving way. Knowing that at any moment, I can be gone, just like that, a candle that shuts off and expires. "If a person lives just one day, 10 years, 50, 75 or whatever number it is, that person has fulfilled his/her life purpose, what it was meant to be, have, and do, on this lifetime" Death is nothing but a liberation of the worldly pleasures and worldly pains, Death is a liberation of the soul. It is absolutely better on the other side, and that I can write it with my whole heart and confidence of knowing so, that the other side is where real living takes place. Excellent service. Merriam who arranged everything for my mom RIP did a superb job. Everything came out perfect. Prices are very accommodating. Merriam is so sweet, kind and caring and she sympathized with me. She's straight forward, gets to the point and a very honest person. She is very professional but i also felt a genuine concern, love and caring as if she was a long time personal friend of mine. I recommend her 110% to to do an excellent job. My father passed away a year ago and my family and I used RG Ortiz Funeral Home for the wake as well as for the burial arrangements. We were treated with respect and decency. We were offered the services that were most convenient to us in an honest and straightforward way. The person with dealt with was Mirian and we will be forever thankful to her for helping us through the process with such care and humanity. read more

I can't give a lower rating. First they bring the bodies in from the hospital in a minivan. they didn't have the viewing room ready in time. How could you not have the casket in the room when you open? Second they filled out the death certificate incorrectly. They put someone else's name in as next of kin. Then they tried to say I was wrong. They refused to rectify the problem and made it my problem. Told me I had to go and start the entire process. I researched this and found it was an easy fix they should have done. Then I saw them reusing the flowers from our burial for the next viewing. What kind of an animal does that. read more

It is obvious that when someone is calling funeral homes that you are in a very fragile familial state. I call Ortiz Funeral home to get a price quote for a service and am not provided condolences by the woman who answered the phone, but rather asked immediately what hospital the body is in and how much it weighs. I clarify that I am calling for pricing for a viewing and and service and do not know this information to which the woman starts speaking to me in raised voiced that without a body weight she cannot give me a price quote. I tell her to give me a price quote for viewing and casket and she screams at me $2300!!!!! What a pig and disgusting human being. I had called 2 other places already and had been treated with respect and kindness, do not ever use Ortiz. read more

Obviously here for a funeral. My grandmother, in my opinion, deserved a better set-up. The front room was entirely too small, with not that much seating; there was a back room that was somewhat bootleg, which included some sketchy looking bathrooms. On the second day of the wake, there was a second viewing in an attached room and it seemed as if there was a parking lot party. Although I'm biased, I didn't think my grandmother ought to be viewed in such a place. read more

I have nothing against african americans but my sister in law had a light tan. They made her look horrible that everyone thought they were in the wrong room. This particular Ortiz Funeral Home is the worst. First, the facility is in poor condition. The wall paper looks like it's 50 years old and is pealing. The furniture is not matched to each other and the bathrooms were disgusting and smelled. Second, the staff didn't enforce their policies. This weekend my family was attending a wake for my uncle. There was another wake in another chapel and the people there were drinking alcohol in the lobby and smoking weed in the parking lot. The people were drunk and high. The staff did not stop them. Two fights broke out which disrupted my uncle's wake. It's was dangerous and truly distasteful. Finally, on the day of the burial, the funeral directors were running late which caused my family to be late to the church and cemetery. One of the driver's for Ortiz was complaining that my uncle had too many flowers. My family typically uses Ortiz Funeral Home in the Bronx and they do such a wonderful job, but this particular site is below standards and I hope they fix their issues. read more

I have had two of my family members viewed there and at both times the experience was quite frustrating. The air conditioning system is never working . They should offer the families a discount since even the laid out cadaver has to be fanning him /or herself not to mention the Bereaved family members . That Funeral Home needs an updated look . And office people that can speak English clearly and are competent in dealing with people on the phone. Personally I would not recommend this Funeral Home to anybody . DON'T walk...RUN! I'm only sorry I couldn't give 0 stars. This establishment in addition to the ENTIRE ORTIZ R G Funeral Home Inc are incredibly insensitive, grossly mismanaged and unprofessional. My aunt's passing which was already a terrible shock to myself and my family, was made exponentially more stressful because of their incompetency. I was never able to receive her death certificate because of their clerical error in copying the social security number wrong (which they never acknowledged although we provided all the necessary paperwork) which ultimately became an unending ordeal of angry phone calls to funeral director and secretar(ies). Finally, according to them, it was never their problem and was up to us to ameliorate. My family was forced to make unnecessary trips to the Social Security Office in order to correct the erroneous paperwork submitted by Ortiz Funeral Home. It took more than 5 months to correct their error. Our limousine driver left behind two members of the family at the Church after the services and sped off to the grave sight. My mother (whom had payed for the funeral services) had to return to the Church to pick up the family members who were left behind(which was in a completely different borough) once we were more than halfway there. Of course, the driver realized he couldn't proceed with the burial without my mother's consent,so he ultimately had to wait until she, and the abandoned family memories arrived. Once my mother made the driver aware of his oversight, there was never an apology made by him, nor on behalf of the Funeral Home. Terrible service, exorbitant prices and shady characters. read more

I remember this funeral home from the late 60's (I was probably 3 years old). This funeral home was a beautiful place in its heyday. I remember a plush décor and well appointed chapels. I went there about a month ago to arrange a cremation for my mother. The Ortiz is long past it's prime. There was a time when it was the place to have a wake for a loved one. My aunt died the other day and was viewed at this place, this is the wrost funeral home that i have ever been to. First they have been there for ever and i think they still have the same furniture in this place when they open over 50 years ago, and in the viewing the funeral home provided 1 box of tissue and i was so hot and humid in there, that i told my family members, i think that we will not have to cremate my aunt, in this room her body will dissolve by the time we leave...Please if you want to have a respectable and dignifed viewing go somewhere else. read more

i had my dad and mother viewing at this funeral home. the secretary mirian was polite, courteous and explained evrything. she does seem overwhelm in that place however experienced no problems. the place does need an ovehaul. my wishes were that they take debit cards but, they only deal with cash. i looke elsewhere and the prices were above my means. read more
