I'm a conscientious person, so I take responsibility for my role in this, but I had a terrible experience at Rex resulting in (who I assume to be) the owner screaming F-Bombs directly in my face, while gesturing erratically. What happened, you ask? Well, put on your reading caps. My dog, who's gigantic, had just used the self-service tubs, which are completely awesome by the by. That's the 1-star of this review. My giant dog and I went to check out, and a small terrier was tethered, unattended, via a leash to the check-out counter. I'm not sure what happened or who fired first, but suddenly there's a Gigantic vs. Tiny rumble in the Bronx. I quickly grab my dog and pull her off...the logistical problem? Well, the terrier was only tethered - there was no human to pull her (him?) back too. So as I pulled my dog away, the Terrier was still free to pursue. Which, as is the nature of dogs in an argument, (s)he did. Thus, the rumble started again. Lather, rinse, and repeat this scenario for the entire approximate 6' of the terrier's leash radius as I continued to pull my dog farther and farther away. At one point the poor terrier re-lunged, only to get its (un-supervised) leash tangled around my dog's leg, which made separating them even more difficult because the little Terrier kept moving along with her. I even screamed "Someone help me!" hoping anyone would come and hold the Terrier's leash. It was a 3-4 second Complete and Total Shitshow Royale that felt like an absolute eternity. My dog is not typically aggressive, otherwise I would not have brought her into a store with other dogs. This was an anomaly. So I don't know what happened. Maybe my dog got surprised when she looked down and realized there was a dog there? Or, maybe the Terrier got territorial when (s)he looked up and a dog as big as mine standing over her/him to check out. I don't know. But it happened. And it was completely horrifying, especially given the size difference. Fortunately, neither dog was seriously injured. The terrier had a small cut on its lip, and mine had a small cut on her chest. This is where the 0-Star portion of my review kicks in: who I assume to be the owner (although he may have only been a manager) snapped into a fit of unparalleled and unbridled unprofessionalism. He crossed the room to start screaming at me. Screaming at me. Literally. Screaming. Up. In. My. Face. About how "fucked up" it is that I would "knowingly bring a fucking aggressive dog" into the store. How "fucked up" it is that my dog did this, and even more so, how "fucked up" I am for "not even fucking trying to pull [my] fucking dog away." ???? "Fucked up" "Fucked up" "Fucked up"... The verbal tirade continued for several minutes. I admit I yelled back at one point, adrenaline was high, and he had just (in addition to other outlandish statements) accused me of not pulling my dog away. That's ALL I was trying to do. I mean, seriously, in what bizarro world would a dog owner just let two dogs fight?! And in what world without physics would a fight start at Point A, and end over 6 feet away at Point B if there wasn't an attempt to separate the dogs? I did the best I could in a crappy situation, but the logistical reality is that I had to get my dog out of the unattended Terrier's loose leash radius, and that took a couple extra seconds. It prolonged a horrifying event. What happened wasn't ideal in the slightest, but it happened. But what *didn't* need to happen was the nuclear meltdown of professionalism that followed. ***Take your business elsewhere, folks, lest something go wrong while you're in the store and you face the verbal --and damn near physical-- abuse of a pissed off shift manager.*** No manager, owner, or even disgruntled shift worker, should ever scream F-Bombs at a customer, let alone enough F-Bombs to make the client genuinely afraid for her physical safety...no matter what. Good luck, and happy bathing. May your experience be better than mine. UPDATE 03/01: It has been brought to my attention that the out-of-line employee was a groomer, not the owner. It has also been brought to my attention that it's very unlikely my dog started the scuffle...which makes the abuse I endured by the groomer that much more absurd and agitating. Rex is a great place to shop and to use the self-service tubs, I'm sure. But as a general user tip, keep your guard up around un-attended dogs they allow in the store. And as a specific user tip: ask yourself whether any service or good Rex provides is worth the risk of crossing a combative and threatening employee, or if you're comfortable letting your dog get groomed by someone with obvious unprofessionalism and anger management issues. If not, there are tons of other pet stores on The Hill. read more

I'm so torn. My dog had a great haircut here but also came home with a slightly nicked paw that bled on the furniture (no one there informed me - big no no). Also I've brought her here several times to have her anal glands expressed since we live down the block but they never do an adequate job. For example, it's been 8 days since her full grooming and she's expressed her anal glands on me twice when they should have fully expressed them (for her that means being good for about 3 weeks). c'mon rex, i gave you a chance to make this right and you COMPLETELY blew me off! we bring our 6 pound multipoo in every 3 months for a haircut. last time we picked her up after her grooming, you guys forgot to return her collar. no biggie - until we realized that she had a cut under her chin that had been bleeding. if you guys had alerted us to this at the time, i would've understood. but no one said anything. i came in the next day to get the collar and talk about it. the woman working at first didn't believe me, then i showed her a photo. she said she would "talk with the groomer" and then call me back. and radio silence. never heard from her again. lame. i was being super reasonable. not aggro at all. WHY ignore me? needless to say we are NOT bringing our dog back in. and you shouldn't either. read more

After getting my pup from the shelter, I took him to Rex to get a good scrub down. They did a great job that time so I trusted to go back to them for his future nail trimming. As you can probably tell from the lack of stars, it has not been a great experience since. The first time I wanted to get his nails clipped, I called ahead and the woman made me feel guilty for asking for appointments because she was the only one working. I said that was fine and we could reschedule, but she said to come in. I'm not sure if she rushed it or not but... The next time I dropped him off to get his nails trimmed, he lost it. The man quickly pulled him back, which was a little abrasive to start with, but then they brought him back - reeking of fishiness. He was so stressed out, he expressed his anal glands and was losing tufts of hair as I tried to pet and calm him down. They said they managed to get his back nails, but not his front. This is a pup who is happy at the vet, constantly will hold your hand, and doesn't mind you playing with his paws or nails. I can separate his toes and he is fine with it. I thought his behavior, at Rex, must be a fluke so I offered to go sit with him as they cut his nails, thinking that would maybe calm him down but it didn't work at all. He whimpered and scooted backwards, and snarled at the tools. I appreciated Rex letting me go up there with him, but clearly something happened at either the second or third visit and now, seeing these other posts about their lack of full disclosure, makes me think so even more. Now, months later, we have still been unsuccessful in trimming his nails. He's been scarred and even trying to do so at home, in a calming environment, with some sleepy pills (vet prescribed) doesn't even work. I wouldn't suggest Rex grooming services to any pets because it is just too risky the service you might get. read more

A-holes raised their prices very recently for grooming from $65 to $85 for medium-sized dogs - a 30% increase!!! Of course without any notice or forewarning. So I was unpleasantly surprised to find this out when I picked up my dog. I get the increased cost of labor, rent, materials, inflation, etc.; but a 30% increase all in go?!?! Forget this shit, never coming back... I hope your impending business closing is as swift as your price increase. read more

I've been going to REX for a year and have recently decided not to take my pup there based on the last 3 appointments. Firstly, they raised the price on me 3 different times. The last 2 time my dog came back with a rash.. I even had given them sensitive skin shampoo to use..., in which they lost / misplaced. Just recently I went in to look for snacks and I asked a question from across the room and the dude at the counter was just on his phone the entire time... he probably didn't even know I was in there! I have to give them one star for the first 3 appointments last year.... the customer service was on point and my pup never came back with a rash. read more

I do not recommend this place at all. Here are the reasons: - the bad haircut. I specificity told the groomer NOT to make my puppy's hair on his head as short as its on the body. The exact word is to make a teddy bear look. But when I saw my pup, everything is gone. My pup looks ugly and said. - the price. I asked about the price BEFORE groomer took my puppy and the receptionist said it was going to be 70-80 but when I was picking up my pup, Rex charged my 100 instead. I questioned about the bill and the receptionist said it's a mistake, it should be 80. Then I asked the difference between 70 and 80, the guy looked irritated and said your puppy is too big for 70 which is why I was charged 100 in the first place. Are you kidding? I have a 30lbs labradoodle puppy and you call him big?? Plus either you have a list of price for each size of dogs so we customers can look at or you don't make things up. Even thought I should feel Lucy that they didn't cut off a big chunk of my puppy's tongue this time, I'm still not coming back to this business. read more

I have been taking my dog to Rex for the past year or so. We have always had wonderful experiences with the groomer he sees, but I was told he is no longer at the shop. I decided to try another groomer at Rex and it was a disaster. When I picked my dog up he was stress yawning and licking his lips, which is not normal for him after being groomed. When I got in the car I noticed blood on my hand and pants. I realized the side of his ear was cut. The worst part, NO ONE TOLD ME when I picked him up. I was told my credit card would be refunded, but that does not change the fact that my dog's ear is cut. Rex has lost my business for good and I just wish I had checked in with yelp before I took my pup to the new groomer because the recent reviews are very telling. read more

For the past 2 years I have lived n the east side, and grooming my Pomeranian would cost around $60. I moved to Seattle with only a part time job so my dogs grooming had to be put on hold. I have had bad experiences with cheap groomers like PetSmart. I finally got a full time job and was able to get my little one groomed (and with summer she needed it badly) . When they brought my dog out, she looked so amazing and with a cute lille purple bow in her hair. When they rang me up, under $50!!! For how bad she needed grooming I was expecting closer to $80! Carmilla seemed really happy. I also love that when I got home there was an email in my box reminding me of the new appointment I just made. Everyone here was really nice and they didn't make me feel bad about how bad my dog needed groomed (which is honestly what I was expecting). They also have lots of treats, toys and other stuff for dogs. Now all they need is a bakery and it would be my one stop shop minus the vet :) read more

Rex will happily take your money. While the people who work here are reasonably nice, this shop clearly isn't here to give the best possible pet/customer experience. There doesn't appear to be much effort to build loyalty among clientele and the treats/supplies/etc. are overpriced. The second time I brought my dog in for a full-service grooming here (the first was decent, good enough), they failed to clip his nails. He's a bit feisty, so it's possible they gave up... but they failed to inform me of this when I paid. I noticed it when I got home, wasn't too bent out of shape about it, and let it go. I brought him back a third time, and informed them of the lack of nail-trimming on the prior visit. The response was an excuse for not doing it--the fact that they only had one person working on him and didn't have a second person to hold him while the first clipped. No apology, no offer to ensure that it got done this time around, and certainly no offer of any sort of discount or free service following the time I paid for a service and didn't get it. The kicker: my dog was scared and freaking out when I dropped him off, something I hadn't experienced anywhere before--he loves everyone, even the vet. When I picked him up, he was similarly rattled, which was enough for me to decide that I won't be back. I hope there are other places nearby that are more wallet-friendly and make more of an effort to please their customers. It's disappointing when your local is a dud. read more

I generally like Rex. They have a great selection of dog treats and toys. Plus the staff is incredibly nice. I was disappointed however with the grooming. I brought my 6 month old puppy to get his nails trimmed and I told them it was his first nail trimming. I expected he might not be the most cooperative. Afterwards I asked how he did and they said that he whined a bit but did well. It wasn't until I got home and noticed the blood on his paw that they had cut the quick. I called to let them know and the woman who answered said that she knew the groomer had cut the quick but had applied something to make the bleeding stop. She recommended I use cornstarch if it keeps bleeding. I am not upset that the quick was cut - it happens - but I just wish that someone told me when I asked how the grooming went rather than noticing blood on the floor. read more

We had our poodle groomed here by Tomy. It cost $60 which was priced well above any other grooming we've had at either the Petsmart or Petco, but also above any non-chain grooming we've ever had. This would be fine except that there was so much hair and dander left on the pooch that our clothes were absolutely covered with it just from riding in the car with him. I had to take the blow dryer to him on the porch so he wouldn't mess up the furniture. Not a professional touch at all. His nails seemed to have been trimmed with a blunt tool, they were torn up and jagged. He had some pretty remarkable burns that lasted for almost a week on his inner thighs and torso and his face was really uneven; I had to take the scissors to him myself after paying for a $60 grooming! Some people might like this, but he smelled really sweet, like a stripper wearing Vanilla Bath and Body Works products. Not our thing. The folks at the front desk were lovely to me, but didn't seem to like each other very much. One gal snapped at the gentleman ringing me up when he asked her to retrieve my dog from the back and he said, "Fine, I'll get him myself!" No warm-fuzzies. I had been grooming my dog for years myself and would sooner do that than take him back here again. I gave them 2 stars because my dog didn't die. read more

I've taken my dog for a bath at Rex a few times since it's the closest place to my house. I've had good experience's so far... today was an exception. Their sign says they close at 6pm. At 5:30 I raced down to give my stinky dog a bath. Once I got there the guy behind the counter said, "sorry, we close at 6." Since I didn't have a watch or my phone ( my husband dropped me off to park while I ran in) I thought it must be past 6. I waited outside for my husband to get back and asked him the time....it was 5:40. ?! I can sort of understand if they need to clean the tubs early, but if that's the case then say that you close the baths at 5:30. I had plenty of time to bath her in 20 minutes- it takes 10 max. Was excited that there was going to be a self-serve dog wash on the Hill. No more driving to Greenlake or Greenwood to give our dog a bath (because I basically forbid it being done in our place...a 75 lb dog = a furry bathtub and tons of cleanup). I finally took advantage of Rex while walking our dog this past weekend. I walked in and was escorted to the back room and shown how to use all of the equipment since it differs a bit from other self serve places. Dean was super helpful. So why not 5 stars? They do not have FURminator shampoos/conditioners like other places, which is a big deal when your dog sheds a lot. Also I have to say that the shampoo options weren't fantastic. Two of the choices were super sweet smelling (cucumber melon and something else) so I opted for the honey almond which simply didn't leave my dog with that awesome "I just got bathed" scent. Also it isn't clear what type of shampoos they are offering since they are in a dispenser on the wall. At other places you can see the brand/label and know if you are using an all natural product on your fur-baby. They do not have treats next to the wash station which other places do and helps to show your pooch a positive experience, although when I mentioned this Dean was very accommodating and brought some treats back for my dog. I want her to have a positive bath experience so it's easier to bring her back. Rates are on par with other locations (they charge $21, others charge $20). Their nail trims are on the pricier side at $10. I can get them done for $5 at Cristi's or even $5 at Rub-a-Dub if I've given my dog a bath there. Didn't spend too much time in the retail part of the store. Definitely appears they cater a bit to smaller dogs with all sorts of clothes and stuff. Will probably stick to getting treats at Mud Bay since they have a great bulk section. I will definitely use the dog washing stations again since Rex's location is close and the staff was great. read more

We took our Great Dane puppy here for the self service dog wash. We hadn't used any service like it before so we were a little confused about how it worked. When we arrived, a staff member took us to the back, showed us how everything worked and was very friendly. Super easy! I took off a star only due to the fact that their store inventory is pretty small so I don't foresee us going back for anything other than the dog wash. read more

I love Rex and so does Bandit! Jeff, the owner, is always so friendly and welcoming and he gives Bandit lots of love and attention. Tomy is Bandit's groomer and he listens to what I want and to my concerns, when I have any, and consistently gives Bandit the best haircut. It can be a little scary taking your pet to a place where their wellbeing in is in another person's hands. I know Bandit is will taken care of because he looks forward to going every time! Reeeeaaallly not sure about this place. Have taken my rescue here about 3-4 times now and haven't ever felt comfortable about it. The grooming always seemed ok (my dog looked clean and tidy) but something always seemed off. Once he was limping afterwards. Another time he was obsessively licking his crotch and rubbing his butt on the carpet for days after he was groomed. He usually doesn't do any of that. Lastly, his nails weren't all trimmed (the thumb one is never touched although it keeps growing) and his teeth don't look like they were ever cleaned. I've had more success slowly learning to groom my dog myself and am in the process of looking for another groomer/location. read more

I was happy with the results when I brought my dogs in for grooming, even though it was a little more than I usually pay. I've taken my little malty-dog to several other places in town and out and Michelle at Rex is the first person to realllly do her up right. Her ears were shaped correctly her tail was trimmed so it wouldn't bug her, her face was trimmed up without looking stupid, but also so her eyes wouldn't be irritated. She came back happy and smelling amazing and the best part is that the cut grew out awesomely and without mattes and the SECOND time we went in (more recently) she came back just as awesome! So I very much recommend you take your little dog here to get groomed. they listen, they know what they're doing, they send follow up emails and reminder emails, they love your dog, they don't over-charge for actual services rendered, and the location is super convenient! The only reason they don't get a 5 is that I have to leave room for how impressed I'm going to be all the NEXT times I go there. read more

Super friendly and helpful staff that seems as excited to be there as I was to find them! Great place, I would highly recommend. Made an appointment for my long haired mini dachs at 10 am and ended up bringing my friend's dog along (a short-haired mini who is a rescue and very nervous about being left with other people.) Jessica was able get her nails and glands done in about 10 minutes while we waited, and was very patient as the dog was yipping the whole time. She had a very calm and reassuring manner with both dogs, the shop is clean and appealing and the staff were all friendly and accommodating. To top it off, the prices were very reasonable for the services provided, thanks for the great experience! read more

My little Frenchton, Olive, absolutely loooves going to Rex to get pampered. Since she is a small fry with short hair, she doesn't get a lot done to her hair. We usually just pop in for a little nail trim and teeth brushing. They've been able to accommodate us as a walk in every time and it's super affordable. Ok so I have to say I was nervous after reading all the reviews especially because the bad ones always stay in your head. But today I decided to give them a shot. I took my 5 yr old English Bulldog (Wrinkles) in for a self service bath and a nail trim. The nail job was quick and perfect. Not too short. Then my husband and I proceeded to the self service area where the gentleman was kind enough to show us how everything worked. My pup was super nervous but everything went great except for my husband dropping the sprayer and soaking us. It was a fun family experience. I've been taking my Siberian Husky here since I moved back to Seattle. After a horrible experience at another grooming spot in Madrona (shaved the hair around his paws and made his paws bleed!!!!), I decided to try Rex. As a Husky, Odin is a lot of work but every time I pick him up from Rex he looks amazing, relaxed, and happy. The staff at Rex are professional, punctual, and very friendly. I take my big (80 lbs) dog to Rex about every three weeks for them to dremel his nails. My dog is not a big fan of the process, but the Rex team is absolutely brilliant in handling my spooked pooch. I usually work with Julio (he's amazing), who always goes over and above to make the process speedy while verbally comforting my dog along the way. The Rex team is incredibly professional, always ready to help, and incredibly friendly. I'm thrilled that they are so close to my home (1 block...awesome), and their great array of treats (in a glass case like a bakery) is the perfect end to the dremel experience. My dog automatically walks over to the treat case after the dremel is done, expecting his reward (which he gets each time, like clockwork). Thank you Rex team for all your great work with my dog. I've come to you for over a year now (two years?), and I'll keep coming again and again. I am a very satisfied customer, and I highly recommend your shop to anyone that asks (in fact, I was just referring a neighbor this morning, which reminded me I should write this Yelp review to get the word out more broadly). read more

This was our first time bathing our 3 month old new rescue and it was a good experience for us (although our dog was a little traumatized with the bathing, understandably). They showed us what everything was and how to proceed- a facial soap, ear soap, and 3 varieties of body wash- nice! I have a couple of suggestions which are 1) to allow for a warmer water temperature ( I didn't ask the employees but the other customer there told us so and 2) get a longer, more secure sliding door for the bath. All in all, the folks were helpful, the self service was just right (altho I may try their grooming services in the future), and and the location is convenient. Thumbs up for Rex! read more

I brought my dog in for a wash only - although the staff was courteous they couldn't explain what was included in the cost of the wash. Two staff members chimed in with different explanations of what they thought could be included in the $65 wash. Finally I asked they text / call when Ash was finished as he scared in an u familiar crate. I went to the store after an hour and was told he was still having his wash. I asked 2 more times over 20 minutes if he was almost done only to be told he was done 20 minutes ago and has been in the crate. I was sitting in the store for 20 minutes. read more

I recently helped a friend bathe her dog at Rex's. While I was there the owner was nice enough to give me a tour of the back grooming area. I was so impressed that I decided to make an appointment for my 7 year old cockopoo. I live in Normandy Park, so it's kind of a hike considering there's a groomer down the street from where I live. He went in today and he looks amazing. I've taken him to several groomers and he's never looked better. As long as I live in the Seattle area he is not going to any other groomer!!! read more

As a small business owner with my fair share of good and bad reviews I love a chance to leave a great review for a job well done. We were going to another groomer in Seattle for several years but had two poor grooms in a row...so even though they were close and we got a discount for being a neighboring small business we won't be returning to the old groom joint. I did some Internet searching for other groomers and Rex came up. My husband balked at driving from QA to Cap Hill but it was WELL WORTH IT. Rex is open some amazing hours including weekends. I called Saturday morning and they had openings the same day but I opted to bring my shih tzu (Bellie) Sunday morning instead. The shop is adorable and clean (they sell puffy coats which we ended up buying). Sara (the groomer) was great. She came out and met our brat dog, gave us some ideas for haircuts, and generally made us feel very happy about leaving our pet in her hands. No dog likes to be left somewhere strange but Sara clearly loves your animal and knows the tricks to put them at ease. I have zero clue what it takes to be a groomer but I cannot imagine its an easy job clipping the face hair of a nervous strange dog. We will be returning with our shih tzu regularly and I plan to bring my English lab in for a buzz cut as well. Thank you Rex and Sara for a great grooming experience. I called to make an appointment after my dog hadn't been groomed in a long time. This is a problem as he is a pomeranian, and a senior dog. I had been told, twice, by the groomer we had been seeing for years that they could not finish grooming him because he was too difficult. I was worried about taking him someplace new, but I spoke to the groomer and explained the situation. Blake was wonderful with me, and my precious boy. He came back looking adorable, smelling fabulous and in a very good mood. Blake took his time explaining things and bonding with my dog.
