I'm not much of a coffee drinker, so I can't comment on the quality of their drinks, but the sandwich I had was delicious. You can build your own breakfast sandwich which comes with two eggs on your choice of brioche, 9 grain, croissant, or no bread. You can then add toppings like cheese, bacon, tomato, ham, salsa verde, etc. I went with two eggs on a croissant with cheese and bacon. It took a few minutes to prepare because they were pretty busy, and the sandwiches are made to order, but it was perfection when I finally got it. The croissant was perfectly flaky and warm. One of the best breakfast sandwiches I've ever had. There isn't much seating inside. Two medium-sized tables that I guess are supposed to be used as communal seating, but in my opinion they're much too intimate and cramped to sit down and get some work done. read more

Another stop of my coffee adventure in this area! The Spanish exotic decor really hit me! And as they said - happy "cinco de mayo". Got my daily americano and tried their sample cake. However what caught my attention the most was their "game of scones" and "talking muffin". Should have gotten one and let it talk ;) Nothing could beat a cup of hot espresso in a chilly morning, and Rex did it in a better way. read more

I just moved in around the corner, and I finally made it in today to come do some work. The space is really cute and inviting, and they have two communal tables to sit at. They have a wide ranges of drinks, house-made baked goods, and sandwiches. I went with an iced coffee and a half Cuban sandwich. The iced coffee was good and the girl next to me had a glorious looking latte. The sandwich was really delicious, too, and only $5 for a half. They also have water out for people to grab, which I think is nice. It's nice to have a low-key, neighborhood joint just outside the tourist havens of Columbus Circle and Time's Square. Hopefully the tourists don't find it! The couple sitting next to me is super weird, though. They keep one-upping each other with bizarre stories: meningitis, a Katrina-destroyed home, a tornado, a robbery, an almost marriage to a terrible person, and chronic illness. What a find out on 10th Avenue! One unlikeable part about Hells Kitchen is its proximity to Times Square & Columbus Circle's crazy crowds. Rex Coffee, located inconspicuously with no overhead sign, provides a small haven from such chaos. It's a refreshing alternative to big chains & bodega coffee, and it hasn't been too crowded...yet. The shop is small and comfortable, with 2 wooden communal tables and floor-to-ceiling glass windows for ample natural light. I approve of their music selection (been a while since I heard Chairlift), have outlets, and free wifi. The art on the wall by Rex's son (who is an adorable cutie pie) completes the independent coffee shop feel. Their usage of Counter Culture coffee beans = smooth, creamy, strong lattes with pretty foam art. Their sandwiches are made-to-order and better than any pre-packaged, semi soggy, cold sandwich you find at other coffee shops (Starbucks) for the same price. The warmed rosemary focaccia was aromatic, soft, and fluffy on their roast beef sandwich. The roast beef were generously piled, and the pickled onions on top gave it a hit of acidity and textural contrast. The Cuban panini was also yummy! Pressed to a crispy exterior, there are hints of lime throughout the juicy, fatty pork. The pickle in between gave the sandwich a crunch while the smear of chipotle mayo and slice of ham makes it its namesake. There are also daily specials on the side board, and I've seen (but had not tried) chicken mole sandwich, fig & brie, and BLT. Baked goods are baked in-house. I had a blueberry muffin, and it was LOADED with blueberries, just how I love it - eggy, and not overly sweet. If you get them after 3pm, you get a discount as well! The coffee is great here, I had the Cafe Americano. The drip coffee was actually better! I met friends who are running in Central Park for a lite breakfast of chocolate croissant which was very good. Their muffins look delicious too. Seats are limited to two large tables, people are friendly so squeeze in! The staff is friendly. Look for the specials when you come in; they had a good egg sandwich for this morning. read more

(1) One of the better breakfast sandwiches out there. Swap out the brioche bun with a croissant, ask for the eggs extra runny, order bacon, and your Saturday morning is instantly made. Okay, I found this place off the breakfast sandwich list/email that Yelp stuffed into my inbox one morning and I wanted someplace off the crazy beaten path that is the 5-mile radius around Times Square/Port Authority. Sandwich plus iced chai = heaven. (2) Not a great place to sit and eat. Empty benches outside when the weather is nice but there are only two small tables inside and a standing room only nook near the cash register. If you can come here early and grab one of the seats by the table with a coffee, cool beans, but it gets loud with people coming in and out, and ... well, I would have to at least bring a pair of industrial-size headphones to get any work done. (3) Breakfast sandwiches only on the weekends (wtf - this place would make a killing if they offered breakfast sandwiches on the weekdays as well). Baked goods in the glass display looked tempting but on the small side for the price. Sandwiches like the gravlox, roast beef, and cuban aren't available until after noon. Rex is a great coffee retreat that has been somewhat limited by its own success. Located between 56th and 57th on the east side of 10th, it is a tiny shop with room for only 2 wood top tables and 10 chairs. The coffee offerings are excellent, and it is obvious the staff takes earned pride in their creations. In its minimalist digs and anti-Star$$$ ethos, it is a happy success. Yet, what may have been a hidden gem of a café for the neighborhood, has developed a reputation that draws folks from near and far. It has outgrown its footprint, and is in need of expansion (at least for a couple more tables and chairs). The slope of the street elevation here makes outdoor seating problematic, but with the queue almost out the door, and the sociopaths camped out at the tables using their laptops and Ipads for hours at a time completely oblivious to the strain they cause, the space is congested, and bordering on unpleasant. Perhaps, this will sort itself out as people elect to change their behavior based on this reality, but wouldn't it be great if everyone could have what they wanted from this exceptional enterprise? That shouldn't be too much to ask. read more

Good food but overpriced for what it is. The woman working at the register was extremely nasty to multiple customers. She insisted that an egg sandwich that I ordered was mine when I told her it was not what I ordered it and then blamed me for opening another customers food. She was not listening to any customers orders and was very rude when anyone tried to tell clarify that their orders were correct. definitely less likely to go here again after this experience. read more

As soon as you enter this coffee shop in the northern part of Hell's Kitchen, you're immediately struck by its friendly, cozy vibes. Limited seating is compensated for by floor-to-ceiling windows that look out onto 10th Ave and a food/pastry selection that is as extensive, if not more, than the coffee menu. Being a huge breakfast person who needs food as much as coffee in the morning, I struggle to find coffee shops that offer more savory options. But, Rex's savory option is its crowning jewel: their egg sandwich is worth all the hype with brioche that melts in your mouth and eggs that are as fluffy as they are tasty. My boyfriend and I also shared their walnut banana bread, which was so soft and flavorful that we almost got another one. I recommend this spot to anybody who wants a filling, savory breakfast along with their coffee but doesn't want to go through the stress of finding a last minute brunch reservation in NYC. read more

Wonderful place. Great folks behind the counter. I had a few of their pourovers and they were delicious. I'm not a coffee expert so that's about as specific as I can get. Their tea selection is also terrific--I tried a few of their greens and the mint--they steep the teas for you and bring them out ready to drink. The mint was a standout, a lot more minty than most mint teas, somehow more richly flavored and scented. The food, also, is... how to put it? Fantastic. Delicious. Swell. I loved everything I had: - The verde chicken sandwich. If you're getting only one thing, and this is on the menu, get this. It's a warm gooey pulled chicken sandwich. - The lamb sandwich. Also good, along the lines of the verde chicken. - The salmon salad sandwich. A great alternative if you want something lighter or healthier--not that the chicken or lamb are so heavy, but this is lighter. I'd have it again. Cute little hipster type place but $4.50 for an iced chai - add an extra $.50 for almond milk and you have a $5.00 boxed drink I threw out after 2 sips. If I wanted a nasty, overly spiced boxed chai mixture I would have went to Starbucks and saved some money. Tiny little Hells Kitchen coffee shop. Have been going here for the past two weeks. Coffee is cheap with a "to stay" cup costing under $2. The other drinks are reasonably priced, as are the pastries. The place really is really very tiny and the line is generally out the door at peak hours, which owes to its popularity with the hospital crowd. You can take your "to stay" cup outside if you want, which I've frequently been doing. If you can snag a spot at one of the two tables, its a great place to work, but only one outlet I could find. read more

If only I lived closer to this place! I saw this place on Yelp, so I ventured over to grab a quick lunch and do some work. Lady at the counter was super friendly! She was patient enough to explain their sandwich offerings to me, and throughout my time there she also made a lot of friendly conversation with other customers. I got the Egg Salad Sandwich ($7) and an Iced Latte ($4.50) with Almond Milk (+$0.50) (they don't have soy milk). Sandwich was really worth the value, and they didn't skimp at all on the filling. Coffee was also solid. Seating is available, but quite limited - two large tables that probably fit 4-6people. Wifi is available, although my laptop's connection kept breaking off. Other people didn't seem to have a problem though, so I think it's one-off. Place gets a lot of natural sunlight (which I love) and I'll definitely go back if I'm around the area! read more

Besides that, I got this white rose tea, which had such a nice aroma! Came here for an afternoon coffee break after reading the glowing reviews on Yelp. I had the latte and a blueberry muffin. The latte was excellent. It was smooth and rich and the coffee was strong. I liked the way the foam on top forms a pretty design. It almost makes you not want to drink it. The blueberry muffin was also a standout. It was loaded with blueberries and very moist and flavorful, but not excessively sweet. It was a good size, not so massive that you get a calorie overload, but enough to fill you up. I almost didn't want to have dinner after eating it. The only problem was the lack of space. There are a couple weeks of tables, and all were filled up with people engrossed in their devices. It looked like these people were camped out there and had no intention of leaving soon. The barista offered a spot for me to stand at at the end of the counter, which I graciously accepted on a rainy afternoon in NYC. read more

I'm not usually one to leave bad reviews, but, y'all, I had just a terrible experience here. The place is cramped (more than normal nyc shops/cafes) but I'm truly just leaving a note to say we waited for 20 minutes for our basic iced coffees because the barista was baked out of his mind (good for him). We asked for a refund, but they said they couldn't provide one. For those 20 minutes we waited, we watched him make only 2 drinks one of which he spilled on himself, another where he spilled it over the customer he was handing it too. He was also drinking espresso out of an espresso glass, but we weren't sure whether it was the same one they were using to get espresso for the lattes. They only had one (zooted) barista making drinks and he had like 11 drinks on the queue. I used to be a barista I know how crazy it can be, but I just feel like it was crazy to not be allowed a refund having to wait. They have a sign in the shop that says drinks the 5-10 minutes (which is weird to begin with for a small shop on 10th), but 20 minutes feels crazy to me. Just not a good experience, but the food looked good from what we saw! Not a terrible place, just bad management/standard protocol? read more

Great place to get Counter Culture coffee. You can get drip coffee, pour over coffee or iced coffee. They also have all types of milk including oat milk. The baked goods looked really good, I was drooling over the sticky buns. The sandwiches are absolutely delicious too. It is not that cheap, but worth it. There is very limited seating. I miss this place as I use to be a regular. The mochas or lattes along with a egg sandwich were great for breakfast. I'd get them to go and walk down to Times Square area for work. Always on the patrol for local coffee shops, this place has been on my agenda for a while. On a Saturday morning, not too much of a rush with some seating available to enjoy your meal. Got a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich ($6) and a large coffee ($3). Sandwich served piping hot with cheese melted in perfectly. Coffee is very strong, which required a significant amount of sugar and milk (for me). Also, they offer free refills on large coffees - I got another one just on the basis of that - caffeine overload.
