As one of Atlanta's resident vegans, I was definitely pumped to see a doughnut shop with a plethora of options opening up in the neighborhood. 2 out of my 4 stars go entirely to the service. The staff is always friendly, very helpful and patient for the indecisive orders like myself. However, the doughnuts are disappointing. As someone who had a healthy relationship with doughnuts long before going vegan, I think these doughnuts are only stellar to a vegan who has been missing out for a long time. We had a caramel bacon, raspberry sprinkles, orange pistachio (all 3 yeast), and coconut flake cake versions. Their iced and hot lattes are yummy. But I do not love greedy businesses who will deliberately create a 'buzz', use that to manipulate loyal customer base and unsuspecting tourists to stand in long lines so they can capitalize on minimizing labor cost and maximizing profits. With a typical business day being only slightly longer than the Anglo-Zanzibar War, this must be one of the shortest revolutions in history. As for their treats, there were those bedazzled with bits of bacon, or with sliced strawberries strewn amongst their innards. Nutella. Salted caramel. Yep, all the typical uninspired doughnuttery that makes the bougie boys jizz their skinny jeans. Only one really stood out for me - The Dough-Nut, a thick, dense cake of almond flour and dreams. "If you told me you were drowning, I would not lend a hand." That's pretty cold, Phil Collins, but if you want to get the job done quickly, then just toss this low-gluten, chocolate-iced death preserver to her and watch her sink to the bottom faster than you can say "Su-Su-Sussudio." It's the stand-out item for this Doughnut Revolution, and I was given at least 2, despite paying for one. To be honest, I might have blacked out halfway through the first. I was assured that, despite it being closing time, many of the remaining doughnuts were actually made just a few hours earlier, around noon, which might explain the abundance remaining. Other choices rank up there with most items from Sublime. They're doughnuts, so you'll never hear me say that they're bad. I'm not even sure it's possible for a doughnut shop to get 3 stars or fewer, unless it's Dunkin (but even DD might get 3 stars from me). But there are better doughnuts - FAR better doughnuts - to be had in this world. Unfortunately, perhaps not around Atlanta, in my experience. As with Sublime and its ilk, there is an emphasis on toppings. I'd imagine that the experience of eating a Revolution doughnut without its toppings would be like the first time you saw those photos of adult film stars without make-up. My greatest disappointment was realizing as I sampled their doughnuts that I wouldn't be able to include "Vive la Revolution!" in my review. Overall, 7/10. read more

Opening Statement: There's not a donut here I wouldn't marry! But, My FAVORITE donut at Revolution (Correction...of ALL TIME) is the Caramel Bacon. WOWSERS! This donut will make your head spin! It will make you believe in a God! It will make you change the way you look at the world! It's mind blowingly awesome! Revolution is extremely accessible with tons of off street parking. It's also next to an awesome beer store! Grab some beer and some donuts. Sounds like a perfect Saturday brunch to me! Okay.. I like donuts as much as the next guy, but just like the gourmet cupcake phase where it's normal to eat pounds of icing on top of a little cake, I can't always stomach this kinda stuff. Plus the cost is usually a little higher than a regular donut. On this particular day, four donuts and a coffee were $12. Makes me feel all the more guilty that this was breakfast.. I had the salted caramel bacon.. and it was very tasty, but too much caramel and not enough bacon for my liking. If the ratio of caramel icing to bacon was swapped, it'd be much better. The actual donut was great.. very fluffy and fresh. My gut is to give them between 3 and 3.5 stars because although they're fine - no issues, I know they're well loved, there was a line almost out the door when we visited - I probably won't rush back.. but I don't think they deserve to be dinged a star because I can't handle their large, rich donuts. One night before I dozed off to sleep, I bookmarked this place. The minute I woke up I drove over to Revolution Doughnuts and bought myself 4 doughnuts. Yes, 4 because I couldn't just leave with 1 or 2. I went on a gloomy Monday afternoon and was greeted by a friendly employee. There was an abundant amount of doughnuts in the window and they also had an awesome selection of drinks. The doughnuts I got were $2 each so I paid a total of $8 for 4. It was a difficult decision to make but I ended up going home with 1 vanilla bean glazed, 1 true blueberry, 1 shredded coconut, and 1 cinnamon sugar. So here is my ranking of my favorite doughnuts: 1. Cinnamon Sugar 2. Vanilla Bean Glazed 3. Shredded Coconut 4. True Blueberry The cinnamon sugar doughnut was my favorite because it was simple and delicious. This doughnut wasn't just your average cinnamon sugar yeast doughnut. There was a hint of other spices that elevated the flavor profile of the doughnut. True blueberry was not my favorite not because it was gross or anything but it just didn't do anything for me. The blueberry glaze did not have that blueberry flavor that I was hoping it would have. The shredded coconut was good and I liked the texture that the shredded coconut gave to the doughnut. BUT, it was just a little too sweet for me. The coconut one also was a little more fragile than the other doughnuts. One big problem that I noticed with the doughnuts I got that day was that they were still doughy in the middle of each doughnut. I'm not sure if that is how all of the yeast doughnuts are here but it kind of ruined my first experience. I would've given this place 5 stars if the doughnuts were cooked through a bit more. So, my severe allergies had me laid up in the house all weekend, but today my hankering for doughnuts went crazy, and with Revolution being two miles from my house (so quoteth Yelp) I decided to check them out. I have a confession to make. I ate the salted caramel bacon doughnut in the car while waiting at the obnoxious intersection in a car that is Ponce and Church. It was worth the sticky, sugary hands on the wheel all the way home. I donated to RD's Kickstarter campaign so I went to pick up my reward finally today. I got the above doughnut that didn't make it home, the ones topped with passionfruit, salted caramel, blueberry, dark chocolate, and cinnamon sugar. I love salted caramel so I went ahead and got the one with bacon (which is 50 cents more than the rest) and without. I absolutely loved the caramel glaze, it was rich, sweet, and buttery, and it had just the right hint of savory from the bacon. You seriously do need to heed warning to eat these the day you get them. We tried to save the other salted caramel for the next night by putting it in a plastic bag in a plastic bag but it had green spots on it! ...But if you think that stopped anyone you'd be wrong. Cut them off and ate anyway. And yes clearly we lived and it was worth it. I believe that one was a cake doughnut unlike the rest so it was a bit denser, but still so good. The passionfruit was my favorite, hands down. Blueberry was pretty good, but the passionfruit was just amazing. The cinnamon sugar doughnut sounds like it'd be pretty basic, but it was the best breakfast I've had in weeks. My dad ate the dark chocolate one and I of course received no feedback on it, which means it was really good. I guess. I don't know if he'd tell me if it sucked but I take the consumption of a doughnut to mean good things. Also their peach iced tea RULES. I probably should have gotten coffee considering how I wanted to fall asleep earlier in the day, but the iced tea looked too good. Coming here has involved a certain amount of soul searching and identity adjustment--I can no longer deny my love of doughnuts--but it's been worth it. I am a fan of the classic yeast style, but RD has a cake style too that's pretty tasty. Nutella cream proved a bit over the top, even for this Nutella lover. Better to stick with low-key classics like vanilla bean (essentially a glazed doughnut) and cinnamon and sugar. Coconut is delicious. And I tried an apple fritter hot out of the fryer the other day that knocked my socks off. My personal favorite is the vanilla bean. It's so perfectly flavored-light and sweet-and get this: it's VEGAN!!! Up on the board, they had the maple bacon and I could see a few in the case, but by the time we go up there, the cashier just shakes her head, "nope, pick something else." "Um..." I stammered heartbroken, "Okay, the Cronut" "Sorry, just ran out of that, too." "Okay... a Crunch Mister." "Nope. I'll take the sign down for that one in a minute." "Well, those were my two backups and I didn't think I'd need a third, so just get me something please." (*on the verge of donut-need-driven tears*) She hands me a Boston Cream Pie Donut and charges me three dollars. Admittedly, the donut was good. Not really what I would've picked for myself (the cream was nice and vanilla bean-y, but too runny), but good. The cake buttermilk unraveled slow onto my hand and in my mouth again, that sweet-bitter taste of still falling prey to something that is both outside and inside of you. Two donuts are a womens issue. In Atlanta, you have to get in the car to go anywhere, and the morning light felt heavy as we waited in line. Everyone kept asking which one I wanted- I didn't have the heart to say that I can't see the boundary between my body and any known donut. Its hard not for me to give 5 stars to any place serving vegan donuts but, I have to be honest and say that Revolution still has some work to do to get to 5 star status. I ventured in on a Saturday and waited about 20 minutes to get to the gleaming donut case.... it was worth the wait but had I been in a rush, a line out the door would have been a deal breaker. The donuts were good but not great. But still, good vegan donuts in ATL vs. no vegan donuts in ATL...I'll take it. For anybody that has stepped foot in to Mighty O donuts in Seattle- just know that this it no Mighty O! Between my partner and I, we tried a coconut, vanilla bean, blueberry, and an original glazed donut. The yeast style donuts are definitely the way to go. The cake donuts are too thick and have more of a bready texture- not what you would expect a cake donut to taste like. I will say they have the coffee mastered though- a manual espresso machine and awesome drip coffee too... I will definitely be conducting more "research" at Revolution Doughnuts. Opting for a mix of yeasted and cake, fritters and filled, plus a seasonal special stuffed peach selection gifted from the kitchen perhaps the most impressive aspect of the doughnuts at Revolution was quality of the fruit glazes, each a spot on representation of their respective fruit, and sweet without being sugary - the sugary-sweet quota more than filled by the excellent fritter and the carrot cake while the 'crunchy mister' was quite literally a deep fried and glazed croque monsieur, one of the few 'hybrid foods' I will wholeheartedly endorse and one I'd recommend a drive from Atlanta (or Savannah) to Decatur to experience firsthand. read more

Salted Caramel Spotted Trotter Bacon covered yeast doughnut. Do I really even need to continue? Soft, fluffy, yeasty (or cakey if you prefer) doughnuts covered in quality ingredients (blueberry, toasted almonds, salted caramel, dark chocolate, or coconut) and served with a smile walking distance from my house. A dozen that I got for my office ran $20.50, which is a deal considering most of the doughnuts are $2-2.50/each individually. I swore there was a scoutmob for this place but couldn't find it at the critical moment. Beware the insane line in the morning, I dropped in at 2pm and there was no line. Also for those just driving by, beware sugar coma induced people wandering across College Avenue with complete disregard for oncoming traffic. It was really pissing me off until I actually had a doughnut and realized those people were no longer with us on this planet and could not be faulted for stepping in front of my car. Seeing the amount of reviews, I already knew that if I came here on the weekend, the line would be ridiculously long...so I decided to leave early and get there as soon as they open. I got there about 5 minutes after the doors opened, and the line was still out the door and down the block...but I now know why people wait for these donuts. I have to say that for a place with all this hype, parking is an issue if you get there during their rush hours. I didn't park near the tracks because I just washed my car. Luckily, I found some street parking. After driving 30 minutes to get there, I ended up waiting in line about another 30 minutes. Once I finally got into the store itself, I saw that the decor is simple, yet effective. which was cool. Simple menu, with the name, type and price of each donut. My complaint is that I really wanted a jelly-filled donut and I saw that there were none in the glass case. Feelings immediately hurt. I decided to pick a few at random, just to get a good sample size (who am I kidding, I got 5 cuz I drove 30 minutes! haha) Bacon & Salted Caramel - The bacon stood out as the flavor to beat. Wasn't crazy sticky as I thought it would be. Didn't lack on the bacon. Not bad Crunchy Mister - Basically a breakfast sandwich minus the egg. You slide an egg into this baby and you've got something close to perfection. I loved it Orange Pistachio - The flavor combination is something I never thought of. Loved the sweetness of the orange flavor, while the crunch and saltiness of the pistachio gave it a great contrast and also a fantastic crunch. Apple Cinnamon Fritter - I ate this one the next day. I know they state that its best to eat them all the same day...I couldn't make it. This one for me was the best of them all. I threw it in the microwave for 30 seconds and it came back to life. The bits of apple was amazing. Not too much frosting to create an overkill effect. Peach Sly - Ughhh this was soo good! Couldn't put it down. It was like a donut sandwich with real slices of fruit in the middle. Never seen anything like it. Very cool place to hit up if the craving for donuts is unbearable, and you don't want the mass-produced, machine-made stuff thats popping up everywhere. read more

I really don't understand how people working at a donut shop can be so surly! Cool-pants counter guy who I used to like has been replaced by a band of scowling grumps. I haven't had good, or even decent, service here in a long time. They begrudgingly take your order, roll their eyes at questions, and then throw your donut box on the counter without even calling your name. What gives, guys?! The donuts are still excellent but they always seem to be out of the best stuff (filled, sliders), which is frustrating. read more

I stopped by Revolution Doughnuts at the Grant Park Farmer's market today after I heard that they a certain Midtown doughnut shop a run for its money. I got the vanilla bean doughnut and was kind of surprised by how large their doughnuts appeared. But, given the hype, I couldn't wait to try it when I got home. After one bite, I threw the rest in the trash. The doughnut tasted like a dinner roll with glaze on top. It was that heavy and that doughy. When I think great doughnuts, I think of lightness (unless it's a cake doughnut). This missed the mark by a mile. The only reason I'm giving them two stars is because their fair trade coffee was delicious. read more

With the exception of the filling in the lemon drop doughnut, these were the absolutely worst doughnuts I've ever had in my life. Heavy and overly doughy (the yeast dough was more akin to a tough bagel than a light, fluffy, proper yeast doughnut; the cake batter was likewise tough and chewy and we never did figure out what that monstrosity with the sliced almonds and Twinkie-gone-wrong filling was made from. Our best guess was two horribly bland vanilla muffin tops glued together by that white, set-your-teeth-on-edge filling). At a whopping $23 per dozen, it's clear Revolution thinks quite highly of themselves. I have been known to spend more, like 2 each (had to think of the husband, right?) of 36 flavors of macaron at Patisserie Vanille at Chicago's French Market was a $60+ splurge that, while a once-in-a-lifetime thing, it was one purchase that I will always consider completely justified. The difference is that Vanille deserved its reputation. These glazed hunks of concrete don't. I've rarely ever encountered food so bad that I had to trash it, but my husband and I (doughnut-lovers, both) agreed it was better to toss the remaining eight of that dozen than eat them (we each tried one cake and one yeast doughnut apiece), we won't be going back.
