As an essential worker, I was excited about the scooters coming to Manhattan. (Yes, they are scooters not "mopeds" as try to insist.) Having to travel on the subway and often at weird hours when it is totally desolate is not my favorite thing. Erratic schedules and then late night shutdown for cleaning made it more stressful. Taking control over my transportation was amazing. Finding scooters was challenging until they added more to Manhattan. They were fun and reasonably priced. But after a while I was encountering more and more problems with rentals. Mopeds went from a loose mirror to missing both mirrors. Connectivity issues where the app wouldn't talk to the system and I would have to struggle to get it to unlock the bike or rack up extra minutes because it wouldn't end the ride. Try to contact customer service and wait on hold for 10 minutes. If you opt for a call back, that's about 20. Glad I didn't wait on the phone. More and more I find scooters are damaged, tires are flat, HANDLEBARS are loose. Yes, handlebars are wiggling. Use the app to report a problem or email them directly, you've got a 50/50 chance of a reply. When you DO get an email response it's a canned reply. Coincidentally, if you try to report problems via the app, the app crashes. Hmm... Last night, traveling home late from work I had to go to 3 different scooters to find one that wasn't damaged or would actually start. That's what prompted me to finally write a review. Revel Transit needs to make some changes if they are to be taken as a serious (and safe) transportation option in NYC and not a hazard and a nuisance. Besides the growing number of mopeds that shouldn't be on the road because they're unsafe, there's a growing number of idiots riding without helmets, riding on sidewalks, going the wrong way down streets, two to a scooter with the passenger riding sideways and simply disregarding every law. I've almost been taken out at intersections more than once by another Revel scooter running a light or going the wrong way. I get that they're trying to make this affordable and accessable to the masses, but there needs to be some vetting besides a valid driver's license. Maybe an annual membership fee will minimize the people who abuse these scooters. The recently raised the per minute rate but I've seen no improvement other than some additional scooters available. Maintenance still sucks, and may be even worse. At this point, for what I've spent using Revel scooters to commute, I'm seriously thinking it would be the same money to invest in buying my own scooter. At least I'll know it's going to be maintained properly and safe. read more

I really enjoyed all of my rides when I was able to ride but their customer service is the worst. Many of the bikes do not work and when you dispute the charge nobody gets back to you ever. My account is suspended and I have no reason as to why and I have sent about six emails at this point. I am sad this service sucks so bad now, but definitely going to look into zip cars instead. read more

No. This company allows unvetted drivers onto the road. My brand-new parked car was hit by one of these mopeds during my first week at a new job. I had to have the additional stress of dealing with Rebel's crappy insurance. Don't support this company. Either get a car, take a car, or ride MTA. It may sound fun and all, but you should not be riding on two wheels for the first time on crowded NYC streets. Consider others' safety and property. read more

Overall really great service. I've seen complaints about paying the $19 sign on fee. I think this is fair given the cost outlay the company incurs int he early stages to get everything up and running. Early adopters always pay a bit more and deal with the growing pains, so be patient. This is a great option/alternative to have to Citibike which I also use, when weather is hot, I'm not dressed right, its uphill or too long a distance....and its just kinda fun. Just factor in that you need to abide by traffic rules (lights) so this adds time ($) if its a busy traffic day. I love that you can reserve your ride when you see a scooter, so that it's not gone by the time you get there. The biggest downside so far is that there are often no scooters nearby without having to walk 10+ blocks which starts to defeat the purpose. I am a little nervous about the reviews stating they were charged $500 with no proof given of any 'wear and tear'. If they are real reviews, I'd encourage them to get a lawyer and file a suit as this should be easy to recoup. Advice to Revel: add more scooters quickly (maybe even the stand-on type) before Lime/Byrd come in to NYC and saturate the market, becoming the brand of preference. Offer some discounts, specials, etc. Also, have your customer management reply to the folks on here mentioning $500 charges, otherwise everyone reading here has a right to be very concerned about the business practices. read more

Beware of this company, they are a scam. I started seeing these mopeds in Sunset Park, so I downloaded their app and signed up. Took one of these mopeds home in Bensonhurst, parked it, and when I clicked "end ride" the app informed me that I am out of service area, and can't end the ride, only pause it, while still being charged 10 cents per minute. I would have to ride it back to the service area (which basically only covers Sunset Park and Park Slope), pay for the ride back, and then find another way to get home. I called the support, and they claimed that somewhere on the bike there is information regarding where it can be parked. I checked and there isn't - in only says "Brooklyn and Queens only". The information regarding the service area isn't readily evident in the app either - there is not a word about it in the "how to ride" and "how to park" instructions. It is buried deep in the app. That evening it started to rain, and rained through the night and most of the following morning. I was charged $155 for that ride and overnight "pause", and all they offered is a measly $10 discount. Never using them again. read more

TRIED IN NEW YORK. Do NOT rent one of these. If you have a credit card just buy an electric bike for 500 or 700 dollars and call it a day. I live in Washington Heights and these things are being used for goofing off and making noise into all hours of the night. The idiots that rent them at night just to screech the tires and ride around the area smoking weed bang them up - then the next morning when normal decent human beings rent them YOU GET CHARGED FOR THE DAMAGE AND THE TRAFFIC TICKETS. Multiple people in this area have been hit by this company for up to $300 dollars in damage they didn't do and they get charged for traffic tickets 24 hours+ before or after their rental. Also 21 dollars an hour or to rent a scooter? Alamo rents CARS for 30 dollars a DAY. Are you for real? To summarize. These scooters are insanely expensive to rent ($21/hr) and you run a VERY high risk of having $500 dollars worth of damage charged to your card and when you call to explain the time frames to them they will do NOTHING. Same with the traffic tickets. If you get charged for a traffic ticket 2 days after your rental, they will NOT care and will do nothing to remove the charge. You've been warned. read more

I heard about this shared moped service from a newspaper article. I signed up for $25/year and was offered a free lesson on how to ride the moped. Paul was super nice and awesome! He went over the basics, let me ride around a bit to get used to the moped and then gave me a t-shirt and a $15 voucher for free rides! I am super excited to have this service (only in Bushwick and Williamsburg right now), but the mopeds are nice, come with 2 sizes of helmets, and it is super convenient! I took my first solo rides last week and I was a bit nervous (I was supposed to follow rules like a car, but cars treated me like I was on a bicycle), but I made it to my destination quickly and without issue. They're excellent. Scooters are solid, fast enough and cheaper than an Uber. Just be aware of the operating zone's borders. I'd also suggest using your own helmet. If you've never ridden a motorcycle or a scooter take lessons. I'd like to see the price come down. If you plan to commute on a daily basis, you'd be better off getting an E Bike you can use in the bike lane. read more

Since then, the bikes have often been disgustingly filthy, more than once just small helmets (I'm a big guy), no hair nets and rusted kickstands. If you're going to jack up prices, don't let your service and value proposition go down the toilet. read more

Rode for the first time in SF, the bike had an advertisement on it that it was free for the first ride. That promotion is now over but the advertisements are still on the bikes. You should respect the customer and provide a refund since you have false advertisements. I won't recommend you guys to anyone. read more

I first saw a Ravel bike at the corner of where I live and was intrigued and downloaded the app, you have to pay a $19 sign up fee and wait like a few hours to get approved (I got approved in about 10 mins) After that your ready to go. I usually take the bus to work but a 30 min ride can take an hour depending on bus schedule, and if you miss your bus forget about it. So decided to use Ravel when ever I'm running late to work. My first ride was really good, I followed the procedure but was completely lost on how to remove the kickstand for the moped, (never rode one before) after a few minutes someone was watching me struggle and helped me out by telling me to just lean and push with your legs forward so the kickstand goes on its own, yah I felt very dumb there. I couldn't use the phone mount since I had a phone case with a handle so couldn't mount my phone there, so I just followed the bus route from memory to work. It's really fun and easy to get used to, took me about 5 minutes to get used to the acceleration and brakes. I feel like I need to improve more on turning but that comes from experience. Parking was a bit annoying, you actually need some good strength to pull back the kickstand and move the moped backwards to get the kickstand going. The price is amazing to me since I use car2go often and this is a much cheaper alternative when just commuting. my 36 min ride was in total $10 and change can't give exact because I had a $5 credit, so my total was $5.44. I also noticed some 1-star reviews here on yelp and thought it was fishy especially seeing they aren't from New York, and had names like fortnite etc. Then I remembered a youtuber that was abusing the **** out of these mopeds, and then I saw he uploaded a video about the charges. I've used Revel a couple of times now and I am very impressed with the app and the experience in general. The instructions are easy to follow, the mopeds are easy to operate (and fun), and pricing is very fair. Now we just need the 'home base' area to expand north to LIC/Astoria and south to Downtown Brooklyn (and why even stop there?). More areas served + more mopeds!
