Not sure what to make of Reuring and its casual fine dining. It's a simple looking place with that contemporary, fresh look and waiters in blue jeans. The waitstaff was attentive, more rigid then relaxed. Their explicit descriptions of each chef's selected plate (you chose 3, 4 or 5 plates) had me hanging onto the waiter's every word since you don't know what you're eating until it's at the table. Made me feel like a student at a culinary school. They linger to take and help you put your coat back on in the small restaurant's foyer. Only one plain beer choice was offered in a fancy, old restaurant wine only way. I did appreciate their flexibility on the wine pairing, allowing us to skip a glass and go with 3 to our 4 plates. Praise should be given to their accurate English descriptions of culinary ingredients. Put together Reuring felt caught in limbo between formal old Europe and no pretensions new Europe.
The chef didn't disappoint for the most part. His dessert was astoundingly good with grapefruit, whipped cream, caramelized sugar and hints of espresso. A lime flavored sauce underneath pulled it all together beautifully. The lamb though was dry and the supplied gravy didn't help. The rabbit pate delicious for the 4 bites you get. The potato waffle's fine flavor under the goose liver worked well until the ample rabbit sauce decomposed the rest of it into a mushy glob.
We had 4 good micro European courses for 42 euro with a 3 glass 18 euro wine pairing which is a delicious value, but with all that Reuring was and wasn't it felt disjointed to me. read more
