One only has to read the responses here from the owner - Dave S. to customers who are dissatisfied to get a sense of how he values his customers. A perfect example? Dave S only responds to negative reviews. I don't see any thanks from Dave S to positive reviewers. I've managed large bike shops in Los Angeles and SF. I'm aware that generally some bicycle shops have an image problem. It's clear that sometimes if a person doesn't fit the image of a "pro cyclist" they are treated with disdain, disrespect and condescension by bike shop staff. I've seen it. I've experienced it many times. Obviously there are great bike shops that understand that building relationships with customers is the best policy for repeat business and long term profitability. They understand how important it is in todays business environment that you need to treat your customer base with kindness and respect. I am selling a used bike part on eBay now. It's a part that Retrogression sells as new. A potential buyer for my bike part emailed me about some information on Retrogression which was incorrect and was confusing my potential buyer. So I emailed Retrogression asking them to look at some of their technical explanations around a product which I thought may need a second look. The response I received was "Thank you, Professor." If I was a betting man, I'd bet that Dave S wrote that email. Best of luck Dave S! read more

I found this place a few blocks from my house in SE PDX, and it's been great to live so close to the premier shop that sells, fixes, and upgrades specifically fixed gear / track bikes. I brought an old frame in that I have had since 2008, after my daily ride was stolen out of my building; and the guy there was super cool and helpful about selecting the right parts. Just a few days later, I picked up what seemed like a brand new ride, and it's been cherry to ride every day. Both the people working there were friendly and helpful, and they always have sludgy doom metal playing, which is nice. I'll definitely be back to Retrogression with my next bike build. read more

I came in with a failing drive side crank and they "fixed" me up right quick, weighing my desired budget against their options. They were able to get my repairs turned around within 24hrs. I have a shitty-looking "sleeper" bike, and I intended on keeping it that way to avoid prying eyes. my new cranks are great and they look non-descript which is just right for what I want. However if you want to bling your ride you can definitely do that here too - go wild with your anodized hubs! There were friendly vibes and really cool selection of other goodies too - stuff you will not find at your normal LBS. Nitto t-shirts anyone?! Really happy I discovered this place; sick of going to roadie-centric bike shops. Can't wait to blow more money here. read more

Ordered a rim on a Sunday and it shipped out first thing Monday. Exactly what I needed. Pleased as punch.

A nicer version of the LBS, focused on track bikes and fixed gear. That said, they're not pretentious, nor are they overly embarked on a journey to tell you what you're doing right, or wrong. A good brake from how some other LBS's that have this focus tend to be like. They've got a good variety of gear for their focus and prices are ~ actually pretty good, even when compared to internet prices. Some of their "discount" stuff (which is really just new stuff, not left over parts and pieces) are smoking hot deals. read more

Helping, friendly cool ass people work here. The inventory is kind of nuts too. If I had to pick my favorite business in the country this would probably get the award. Honestly I love their whole vibe and want to have them build all my bikes. read more

Great inventory of track needs. My dialogue with thier customer service was not so great. I had some questions regarding crank arm spindle length and was met with rude and unwilling to help language via email on which crankset or bottom bracket to purchase. I have shopped with them before, but customer service is big for me and I won't be back. Retro- please remember that when speaking via email not everyone knows what you know as well as how voice connotation and dialogue sounds on the other side. Be nice. It helps. So a few months back I was in the market for a one speed track bike and was told about Retrogression from some peeps at November Project. I met the store owners Angie and Dave and I couldn't be happier with their products, pricing, knowledge and patience with me as I was a newbie to 1 speed's. I walked out of their store with the exact bike I had in my mind including custom upgrades I wanted in less than an hour (see photo). I guess it's just a bonus that Angie and Dave are Cool, play awesome tunes and accept American Express when most small businesses do not. Today I returned to Retrogression to upgrade my pedals as I'm climbing more hills. This store visit was the same as the first...Fantastic! Thanks guys! Pete read more

Happy Bday to me! My Pops copped me a Cinelli Vigorelli frame for my Bday! I'm stoked to say the least. Either way, it was delivered today and I was hoping that it arrived without incident (I live in El Paso, TX atm). It did. It was packed well and the frame and fork are flawless. I have bought a couple smaller items before from Retrogression. Everytime there's no hassle and the shipping is quick a reliable! Super happy with everything! This store has everything you need track bike related! Not to mention, the best prices! It's really hard for me not to blow every paycheck at this store.... lol. Thanks again for everything Retrogression. Much appreciated! read more

The team at retrogression will take care of you. They are very knowledgeable and charge a fair price. Dave found an issue with my cranks and quickly reached out to me with a recommended part. When I came back to pick up the bike he gave me some advice to prevent the issue from happening again. They truly care about their customers and do honest work. Quick and fast. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a local fixed gear bike shop. read more

This is NOT a customer oriented shop, maybe their brick and mortor store has a better experience, dont know and dont care. Their online business is a we'll-get-to-it-when-we-feel-like-it type of operation. They claim a 1-3 business day period to process, ship and provide tracking numbers. False on multiple accounts. Ordered a chainring on a wednesday, waited 3 days, checked for tracking number, nothing. Decided to check out ther FAQ to see if maybe im missing something, i wasnt. I emailed Retrogression the next Saturday (3rd day after order was placed) and asked when my order would be shipped. I got NO response via email. Never recieved a tracking number that day, either. Now, mind you, this "business", claims to NOT ship things on Mondays. So, that means the earliest i can expect the package to be shipped would be by tuesday, a total of 6 days after i placed my order. Flash forward to 3 more emails that went unanswered. I finally recieved my chainring, 3 weeks and 4 days later. None of my emails were ever answered. While waiting for this "business" to get around to being responsible and shipping orders, i simply went to another online retailer, ordered the same chainring and had it here 4 days after ordering it. Thats how things work in 2019. Good job, Retrogression. Pityfully pathetic customer service/shopping experience. To retrogression's owners, nobody expects your company to be like amazon, in regards to shipping times, however when a paying customer gives you their hard earned money....you dont hold the bag for weeks and dont respond. Thats shady and would never happen in real life brick/mortor stores, so why do you think its acceptable to do this online? You moved, you got your fancy new location, you guys seem to have revamped alot of things, maybe now its time to actually have a PROPER online store that can be respected. This is the type of customer service that will bring down your company. read more

Hello I am come this shop while on vacation. In my country we ride many track bike and have very good scene for this but always feel something maybe missing. Dave tell me about Black Sabbath and I find what I am looking for. This make riding track bike much more sensible and everything okay now. Black Sabbath has changed my life. I quit job, and am in process of building castle of many animal skull. It is lit with candle and burns bright with the blood of nonbeliever and geared road rider who wander through my town on bike packing trip. I learned about Retrogression from a fixed gear rider I met at Atomic Cafe in Beverly. That Beverly had their own fixed-gear-oriented shop was surprising, but considering there are four other bike shops in town, maybe not! He told me how Dave, the owner, had helped him set up his Russian frame, tuned-up his wheels and was a great guy to deal with in general. So when my own fixie needed it's stem unstuck, I headed down to Front Street. The shop is a bit hard to find, but it is right across from the huge red boat storage building on the lower level below an antiques store. The shop is very cool, with exposed stone foundation, a wide variety of fixed gear frames and accessories from bargain to boutique, including his own line of bike tee-shirts. Dave turned out to be very cool and very quick with the repair. I was so pleased, I pulled a box of mountain bike parts I'd accumulated years ago and brought it down to Dave. He found some bargains on the few additional parts I needed and built up the bike in no time. He set up some road wheels for me as well (he does complete wheel building too). The best part is that every time I head in there, he has more cool bikes/frames on display. read more

my review is for an online experience with this store. NIGHTMARE VENDOR ALERT!!!!! THIS HAS BEEN THE WORST SHOPPING EXPERIENCE I HAVE EVER HAD, CRAIGSLIST INCLUDED. IDENTITY THEFT AND HARASSMENT FREE WITH STEM PURCHASE. if i could give them NEGATIVE stars, i would. after 11 days of waiting, trying to email, being ignored, being told to wait, being told "you will get your stem and no one is going to die", i called the shop. dave (the owner) let me have it. this man went straight to rage, he didnt mess around with reason or respect because that would be a waste of time (sarcasm). as soon as i took issue with his irresponsible and aloof "business" style (ie being blown off), he raged on me. following the rage incident, dave emailed me to let me know he was cancelling my order (which i had previously requested). i told him "i think thats the best outcome for both of us"... and here's where we take a turn from a disappointing online order, to a malicious attack on a customer (a customer who was right to be upset to begin with). dave took all of my personal information (IDENTITY THEFT?) which i had used in his online store and began using it to sign me up for spam emails, and who knows what else (which i am still getting/which he is still probably doing). it seemed as if he spent both of his days off (sunday and monday) sitting in front of a computer "exacting his vengeance" on me. it would appear that he's even doing this during business hours, which could explain why orders are late to begin with. i tried to follow up with dave a few days later, to reason with him and talk to eachother... i do understand that sometimes anger gets the best of people, and i wanted to let him talk... but he laughed as loud as he could and told everyone in the shop he was hanging up on me before i even got a word in. all of this is petty and childish. not what i would expect from a "business", or any adult for that matter. i am writing this review as a caution to anyone even considering shopping online with this store. MY PERSONAL INFORMATION WAS NOT KEPT PRIVATE OR SAFE. your order may or may not be late, but if it is... tread very lightly in how you go about addressing it. also see the review from someone else on RIPOFFREPORT, they had a similar experience with daves rage. ive had other bad experiences online, but usually you can just brush them off and move on, dave cant seem to do that, watch out for his petty vengeance. i asked him to stop and he laughed in my face. i have no indication that he has stopped or intends to stop. for dave, -email spam filters work good these days, so i dont really understand what you think you're trying to accomplish. -i dont even know what you want from me, i was frustrated but satisfied with the outcome as i said plainly when i told you "i think this is the best outcome for both of us". it feels good to get it out there, thanks for reading. p.s. the spam sites have shared the IP address that dave signed me up with, it matches the IP address that dave sends his business emails from. no question whatsoever whether or not its him harassing me. read more

It's 2020 and there are few fixed gear dedicated shops out there, especially as rad and nice as Retrogression. I accidentally had 2 units of an item in my cart and Angie emailed me asking if that was indeed correct instead of just shipping it like almost all other businesses would have. Insane customer service even during COVID. Order shipped the next day as well! Definitely ordering from them again asap. Thank you Retrogression! read more

RG is the shit. simple as that. the shop is owned by Dave (aka Scrod) and his wife Angie who are really great people, its a small joint that knows what theyre doing. they cater mostly to the Singlespeed/Fixed gear crowd, but they still know how to fix/tune/build geared bikes or any other manpowered wheeled vehicle you drag into the shop. everything is so low priced i always wonder how they even make money, but they seem to be doing great for themselves. the online shop is fantastic, shipping is always lightning fast, and always a pleasure to work with. they can get just about anything special ordered for you and its 99% of the time cheaper than anywhere else you find it. tapping into the web forum will help you get questions answered and BS with some other biker weirdos which is great go in and shoot the shit with dave who is guaranteed to have to laughing in the first sentence, and give them your money. join their web forum and like them on facebook since they post deals and new products on there regularly VIVA LA SCROD! read more

How does RG only have two reviews on yelp...? If I could give six stars, I would. I deal with RG through their webstore on a consistent basis. As another reviewer said, prices are easily the best. They have products priced so low it makes you question why other shops charge so much. I have RG bookmarked so when I want to know how much something should cost, I check their site. And their price is almost always the best. They make it really, REALLY tough to buy local. Seriously, if RG were my LBS, I wouldn't go to another place. Ever. Now you won't see the true colors of anything until things go wrong. I had a first world problem when RG sent me something different from what I ordered, and they promptly sent me the right item with apologies and told me to keep the wrong item. That's customer service. Scrod is also a source of knowledge on bikeforums.net. That's how I found about his shop. The guy answers all types of questions and helps members with their issues over the internet. If you have problems, you'll get a genuine person responding to you. If you want a shop that's no frills, no BS, just top of the line service and parts at a low cost, RG is it. ps. ef superb read more

Retrogression - Purchased frame and wheels from retrogression - Bikes Near Me - Portland, Oregon

With militant drumming, battering riffs, and enraged vocals Black Sabbath has earned a place on quite a few of my "wake up the neighbors" playlists over the years. While calling them an institution may be a stretch, they're certainly a band of workhorses, belching out no-bullshit death metal as a fraternal quartet since 1968, and serving as a constant reminder that England is more than just pompous twats, spice girls, double-decker buses, poor teeth, and a dry sense of humor. The whole band is a shuck -- despite the murky songtitles and some inane lyrics that sound like Vanilla Fudge paying doggerel tribute to Aleister Crowley. Black Sabbath has nothing to do with spiritualism, the occult, or anything much except stiff recitations of Cream clichés that sound like the musicians learned them out of a book, grinding on and on with dogged persistence. But this review isn't about their poor taste of music, no, it's about the shop. More importantly Dave and Angie's exceptional no-bullshit attitude when it comes to helping you. If they have what you need, and hopefully it's related to a fixie or a track bike, you're in the right place to get help. With that said, this is my go-to shop for my track bike. They'll charge you a fair rate for work and are completely open about what you may or may not need. On the off-chance of calling them boutique, they are in fact a specialty shop specializing in fixed-gear bicycles. Don't bring your kid's bicycle in looking for a tire change, you may well indeed get laughed at. I'd have given them a sixth star if it weren't for that one time I heard NOFX blaring across their dollar-store speakers. read more

Favorite local shop in town! When it comes to anything track/fixed/SS related, this is where to go. Owners are great people and Dave is one solid bike-mechanic. I've purchased one bike from there already and have my eyes on another. They definitely know their stuff and are always super helpful with anything when it comes to my bikes. I really appreciate Dave's work ethic and attention to detail when it comes to bike mechanics. I always leave feeling confident on the bike I'm on and confident with the work that gets done on it. If you're looking for anything track/fixed, this isn't just the only place you should go, it's probably the only place you'll actually find what you're looking for (especially if you want quality parts, and I bet you do). If for some reason you need something more specific or particular that they don't have, they'll order it for you right there! read more

I walked in and was greeted by Dave and Angie. As I browsed we talked & I let them know I had little knowledge about fixed gear bikes and at no point did i feel pressured into anything. After scoping out several bike shops i felt comfortable enough to stick with this one. I decided to go for a build instead of purchasing a complete bike. Dave tried to keep my build inexpensive as possible as I continued to stare at all the bike parts with a big price tag haha. At no point did either of them try to up-sell me anything so they could make more money, instead they gave me their honest opinions about what i should get due to my riding style. As they stayed open past their closing time they continued to explain every bike part to me with patience. This isn't another bike shop trying to make a sale. If you want a fixed gear and confidence in your purchase, don't hesitate to come here, you are never pressured into anything. I will definitely be back to purchase another bike and parts. Thank you guys for making this experience the best. read more

Awesome shop, awesome staff. Exclusively track/fixed-gear/urban-cycling but that's why it's so amazing. Whereas you'd go into your regular bike shop and they MAY have 1 track-cog (that they'd have to dig through a drawer that hasn't been opened in 5 years to find)...Retrogression will have it all and then some! Best shop hands-down for track/fixed-gear cycling, apparently the owner is an awesome wheel-builder too. read more
