Overall gym is fine. Ten Years in this location some equipment is failing and just in need of replacement. Minor issues are being pointed out but no one is able to even tighten a loose bolt. read more

This is a busy gym with great staff. The patrons are generally friendly. My favorite piece of equipment is the chest-supported T bar row machine which lets you get a great stretch and has a more favorable force curve than a traditional row. I have been trying to pause cancel for months at the clark in NJ...the manager is on sick leave and no one will call back or help me...I have been calling for 3 months and even called corp ABC Billing or some nonsense..DO NOT JOIN this gym or you will never get out... When I started coming to this place years ago all of this equipment was new, now years later they have not replaced anything nor repaired any. Several machines are either dirty and need of repair or are just dirty. The people that work here seem to pay more attention to their phones then they do the customers. read more

Pasting my review I posted to Google here (there are more reviews similar to my experience on Google): I came here to check out the reviews to see if anyone else experienced what I do and I see a commenter, Dawn, write about the gym not opening when it should have been opened. The owner commented that he would do everything in his power to not allow that to happen again. This happened 2-3 times in June and just this morning, the gym was scheduled to open at 5 and didn't until 6:10 am, with almost everyone who was there waiting for 5 am, waiting ONE FULL HOUR to get into the gym. I do not blame the young lady who opened the gym. I don't blame the employees for the other times. This is a chronic issue that the owner has refused to address. The simple solution is adding one employee to ensure at least one person is there on time. "Everything in my power" except the only thing that makes sense? After much time and consideration it's time for the updated review. There are many factors why I am reviewing Retro with 2 stars and I'm not sure where to begin. First, the On Demand kiosk in the group exercise room was broken for the longest time. It's up and running now most of the time but there was a long period of time where is wasn't working every time I tried to use it. Even when it was fixed it was only temporary and another problem would arise. First the HD cable kept disconnecting, then it was Out of Order, then something with the cable again, then it was down for maintenance... you get the idea. For someone who almost exclusively uses the On Demand classes to workout, this was a huge inconvenience and disappointment. Next, I signed up for personal training with a manager who has since changed Retro locations. He promised me 5 complimentary sessions, then cancelled two of our training sessions, then vanished without telling me he was leaving, and never got back to me about rescheduling our sessions (I still had 2 left). It was an AB-SOLUTE nightmare dealing with the new manager because she refused to honor the first manager's word. Used the whole "it's not in your contract" bs which is why I figured the first guy could blow me off and take off without keeping his word. Silly me for trusting someone and taking their word at face value, but that's just unprofessional, shady, and crappy on their behalf. I don't even want the 2 free sessions at this point. It's about the principle and disregard for how they treat their members. Just to be clear, I have no problems with the front desk people or manager there. I'm talking about their bs personal training manager. As for the personal trainers themselves- there's not many to choose from and if you're a former athlete and/or know your ear from your elbow, the training here is underwhelming. Even after the intake form and you saying what you like and want, the training programs are still cookie cutter and don't feel personalized. Also the manager I signed up with promised meal plans and all this stuff that never happened. He reminded me of a sketchy used car salesman and I should have known better. Other more minor things that hinder the experienxe at Retro- no one reracks their weights. Yes, the staff makes announcements about reracking but how about someone walks around and calls people out when they don't? There's never enough weights in the area behind the trainers desk or enough room. The weights in the class exercise room don't fit in the rack. Buy another rack. Don't make me smash my fingers trying to pry a weight out. The weighted body bars are in terrible condition. Use the maintenance fee you collect from us every year to replace/upgrade some of the equipment. I know Retro is cheap and no frills and that's part of the allure, but some things are just inexcusable. After all, a Retro membership and personal trainer package aren't free, so there has to be some expectation of service. read more

Seems to have all the nautilus and weight machines but that's about it. Small place so machines really bunched together so you have to slink and almost contort your way through the machines in order to get to another part of the room. Plays music REALLY loud and one time they were even blasting 80s heavy metal music. Tried it in June '21 and not only was I about the only one wearing a mask but got some stares for wearing one. If you're looking for a club mostly free of meat heads, this is probably not it. No monthly membership plans. While you don't go to a gym for aesthetics, the bright yellow that all machines are painted in, and complemented by bright red walls and decor, was garish and off putting. I completely believe those who say they were ripped off on their bills; detest this practice and don't know why it's so accepted among gyms when in other industries you would face legal consequences. read more

The average gym with no bells or whistles to encourage a great work out but has the basics to keep you moving. Some equipment do not work properly ( free motion glute, some treadmills, and the hip ab/addiction) but most do. The free weights in the classroom are often not stored properly - was pushed to the side under the speed bag which if you don't pay attention enough to move it out the way you can injure yourself. Speaking of classes, although this location advertises classes there are none. I have attempted to go to classes every day during the week in the mornings and afternoons but there seems there are no instructors at this location. I gave up after asking where's the instructor for 2 weeks and just assumed it's an advertising scheme or maybe a requirement for the gym to stay open to post classes even when the instructors have left their positions or do not show up for work. The staff replied with "I don't know," or "let me find out" and would disappear into the room for a lengthy time. Still gave it 3 stars because it's clean, doesn't have that usual sweaty gym smell, and the staff are friendly and welcoming (lack of instructors aside). it's not packed, it's not loud, and you can work out uninterrupted for as long as you want. read more

I see a lot of negative reviews for this place and I find it absolutely ridiculous. For $20 a month you get everything you need to have a good workout. It has its busy times LIKE ANY OTHER GYM, it has its staff that can suck LIKE ANY OTHER BUSINESS. It's always clean, the staff is always friendly in my opinion, and if you're there to workout it's a great place to be. Only thing that breaks my heart is the movie room was taken out a few years back, but guess what? I'm still a member and still enjoy going :) read more

The personal training company for Retro Fitness is terrible. Element Personal Training has personnel problems for one thing. I have gone through 3 managers in 3 months, and 2 trainers. I was promised several times, by several managers that they could accommodate my need for an early morning schedule and after 2 or 3 training sessions with each trainer, I would have to adjust my schedule. Why should I have to keep adjusting? I don't want to keep paying for inconvenient training sessions. The cancellation policy is draconian - 50% of remaining sessions. The patronizing customer service manager, Manny, claiming he had no idea why I would want to cancel (I left a negative review on Google, I complained to several mangers in person and by text) should work on fixing company problems rather than "recommending" I use up more sessions faster rather than cancel. How am I supposed to do more sessions when they can't meet my scheduling requests now? Avoid the this training company like the plague. read more

I came here last night with my sister who has a membership. I waited at the check in counter for the female associate to acknowledge me. When she came over my sister told her, "she doesn't have a membership." The girl responded in the most monotone, unhappy voice ever, "so, do you want to be a guest?" I replied, "no, I would like to be a member. What do I need to do to sign up?" She turned this computer screen around and said fill this out. So, I fill it out. I'm done, waiting for her to come back and remember she's dealing with a customer. She proceeded to tell me that I get a free this and that and I need my key tag every time I check in. Ok cool. My sister asked her if she can change her plan to get rid of tanning. The girl said no you have to do it at your home gym, but she didn't upgrade at her home gym so that didn't make sense but ok. We work out. It's pretty small but it has everything you need and it wasn't crowded which was awesome. The tv's on the treadmills don't work which was pretty upsetting. The bathroom was very clean though, which is a plus. We finished our workout. Then we decided to get a protein shake. My sister asked the same girl if the bar was closed and the girl looked at the clock and took a minute turned back to my sister and said no. So she asked her about getting a protein shake that was chocolate peanut butter and asked the girl if she knew which one she was talking about. She just gave a blank stare. So my sister asked for the peanut butter shake with chocolate whey. The girl was so busy chatting it up with two other guys at the bar she just left the protein shakes next to the guys and didn't even say a word to us. My sister asked oh are these ours but the girl completely ignored her!! The worst customer service ever. I deeply regret signing up for retro at this location. I'm pretty sure the girls name is Dana. Absolutely horrible customer service! Too busy talking to guys. The other gentleman that was there earlier was much more friendlier and nicer. We come to the gym to work on ourselves not to be treated like we were a burden. Get it together! read more

Came in today on a sunday for a workout. There was barely anyone there. I got in about 2pm and left at around 3:15pm. The front desk greeted me goodbye as I was on my way out. It was a tall skinny spanish guy with slim Jim hair, a spanish girl with wavy short black hair and an asian kid sitting at the smoothie counter. I replied goodbye. Then as I was walking pass the first set of doors, I heard someone say you little hoe. I questioned myself, but I definitely heard it. So I called back and I recognized the voice. It was the tall spanish kid and of course he denied having said anything. Firstly, he said he just clocked in and had no idea. Then after I mentioned my attire (grey sweatshirt with a graphic design, two toned green leggings and white asics). He said he might've said have a good day. He was stammering the whole phone conversation. I've been with the gym for over a year and a half now. It has always been okay. This was disgusting. People go to the gym to work out and go about their day. Why did he think it was okay to assault me like that? I am beyond disappointed in this establishment for hiring such bad people. read more

They keep this place well maintained. It gives retro fitness a good name. some of the areas are a little tight, but you can tell the management takes pride in making sure the place is the best it can be for its members. There is a mini turf which is unique to this location. They have a nice balance better startrek (poor quality but the new retros use this manufacturer) and life fitness (so much better!). The free weight section is a good size and they have a wide variety of machines. They have a lot of cardio machines as well. I haven't been there during the busy times but Saturday and Sunday mornings are not overly crowded. read more

You are not protecting me by continuing to charge me, when I am NOT under contract, and when I do not live anywhere near the gym any longer. There is nothing to "handle" - I fully recognize that I need to pay out 60 additional days, and am prepared to do so. The conversation, which you are saying cannot be handled on the phone would go something like this: me: Hey I'd like to cancel my membership, here's my name, address, and number you: What if we throw in a free month? Me: No thank you, I live over an hour away and would like to cancel. In addition, the local retrofitness' hours don't work for me. Please cancel my membership You: But what if we.... Me: CANCEL IT You really need this to occur in your gym? You really need to have a member making a scene in front of your other members because you're going to try to sweet talk that member into staying? Absolutely freakin ridiculous. Congratulations, you milked an extra two months of 19 bucks a month before I managed to make it in, and then ANOTHER 60 days (why I have to give 60 days notice when I'm not under contract is completely beyond me) and, in exchange for that 80 dollars you have ensured that neither I nor anyone over whom I have influence will set foot into any of your gyms again. read more

This gym is better than the Retro fitness in Woodbridge, North Bergen, and Kenilworth. The crowd is better and I feel that is an important quality in a gym despite the great machines. However, when signing a contract for the gym and you want to cancel and sign up for another gym, beware that it will take 60days before your contract cancels. This is without question the worst gym I have ever joined!! The place smells awful and the staff is often too busy talking about their weekends and personal lives to show any interest to their paying members. The registration process was a complete disaster and after a series of personal training sessions and finding broken equipment over the past couple of years I decided to switch to another work out option locally. I went through the proper process to cancel my membership when it was due for renewal and after complete frustration with aggressive collection calls, because they were too incompetent to figure out how to charge my card on a monthly basis, (and actually driving to the facility and physically putting the manager on the phone telling the collection agency to stop harassing and calling me, they still continued)! After completing the registration cancellation process, I was contacted a series of additional times from several managers (as the previous ones had apparently quit) using confusion and a more and more aggressive approach try and get me to pay more money to get out of my membership. I had proof that I had paid for my membership in full and did not intend to return to their gym, the manager finally came back to me and ask me to pay the difference, pleading ignorance about the entire situation. REALLY?I I then thought the issue was done over with and resolved then this past week well after over eight month had past, I got a collection call from some company clearly in Pakistan, asking me how I intended to pay off the balance of my bill to Retro Fitness. I advised I had proof that my balance has been paid in full, and that I had an attorney involved and to cease and desist from contacting me again!! I would steer clear of this place. They will never do what they claim to, regarding canceling your membership and you will be harassed and bothered for months on end to get out of something that shouldn't be an issue in the first place!!!! read more

Agree with D.R.'s review. The open training area is so disruptive. The trainers scream into microphones and it permeates the gym. I'm not even 40 and it startles me! I like the cardio machines. That's all I can use, as the weights and machines are crammed into a tight area surrounded by gymrats with gallon water jugs and I find it intimidating. Maybe that's my own issue, but it's a valid concern. Would be nice if the gym were larger to spread out the machines more. Parking is a lot better than it used to be, and I have no issue getting a spot any time. Staff is always friendly. It's affordable. Locker room is fine. I'll give it 3 stars, since it suits my needs, but I wish they wouldn't scream into microphones. read more

I would be careful before signing into any contracts at this gym. I had to move out of state where there are no retro fitnesses. I followed all their rules and gave my 60 days written notice through certified mail. I even got a call from the manager who approved my cancellation. Then they continued to charge me every month anyways. I called the gym three times and left my name and number with the female staff to have the manager call me back....he never returned my call. Finally my husband called and got him on the phone, and he said he would take care of it and credit my account. However, he didn't and I was charged for another month. Finally, I just went through my bank and they credited my account the money. Now they company is mailing me that I owe them money. Completely unprofessional business...when i move back to Jersey I will not be joining this gym again read more

I love this gym. Helpful staff, great atmosphere, and the smoothies are great. The energy is electric. It's definitely a great place to work out. Where else can you watch a movie while working out? I love it. I wish it was 24/7, because it would get 5 stars if so. They even have a wellness center in the back as well. That's so cool. I can get massages and get chiropractic adjustments before or after I work out. That's awesome. Go Retro. read more

This has been by the "deadlift platform" for days. Looks like a snot rocket? Either way it's gross. The sink in the mens bathroom has been broken every other day (hire someone who actually knows what they are doing). Where do my monthly payments go? Certainly not to the cleaning of this place. They also do not go to new equipment or even to update equipment. This place is going downhill very fast. It is actually very sad considering it was at one point a very nice gym. Also, the whole entire turf is wet. I do not care how damp/humid it is... take care of it. Very poor grip. Why bother have the turf? Also, when I step off the "turf" onto the "deadlift platform" my feet are wet and slippery. That is a safety hazard. I can potentially fall and smash my head on the metal/steel... two inches away from it. Let me tell you, I am waiting for that day to happen. If I did not live on Raritan Rd. right behind this place I would be attending a different gym that actually cares about their guests' safety/health. In fact, I may be leaving soon. read more

Well maintenanced? No it's not. Let's take a look at this gym's errors. First of all they do a lousy job here. You see weights all over floor and people slamming weights. Not to mention the circuit idiots who decided to hoard machines and you go there to use the machine they come out of nowhere to complain they are using it. Cursed one out already. Second- let's see how many of the octane bikes are still broke? Probably every one of them. Not to mention one time the plug wasn't all the way in I had to do it myself. Third - theater seems to never work and the movie they forget to change the name of the movie. Fourth - the woman bathroom. Filthy. Toilets are not cleaned why the heck should I use my hand to flush the handles when the bowl is gross? Two of three sinks you can't use lift up without feeling like you are going to break your arm. Soap amazingly doesn't have soap in them at times. Fifth - this place needs to check all the machines and clean better. Wipes were much better than the stupid paper towels and spray. Most people don't care about cleaning them. Sixth - they tell you clean machines and put back weights and something like being respectful to others. Yup they enforce this I had a stupid lady on the phone talking loud who I cursed out. This gym needs to enforce rules and clean better instead of just taking our money for nothing. read more

This is Retro Fitness is still one of the best in the area. I have been a part of this gym for over 6 months now. I like where they are going with the gym. They are making a lot of changes and adding new things. I usually workout legs at this gym. Wish they had more options to work on calves. Only one machine to workout calves there. Compared to the woodbridge one this one has a better mix of women and men, which as a girl makes me feel more comfortable. the staff is super friendly / bathrooms clean, i leave my coat on the rack never had any trouble about that. I've tried the yoga class with sonia and it's great! if you go anywhere else for yoga you'd have to pay somewhere around 16 dollars a session or have to buy 5+ at once. Need to try the other classes. Has a shake bar, if they ask you if you want to add a banana do it, they know best and some shakes taste better with a banana. read more

This gym is always clean and machines do not go down often. The owner seems to care about the gym and you can tell he renovates and adds equipment relatively regularly. It's been open for a few years but it still looks better than some of the newer retros. It also has good quality equipment, Hammer strength and life fitness. read more

Really clean, horrible music, nice staff. My main problem is when they shut down an entire section in the middle of the gym during peak hours for "team fitness" that may include only 6 peoplele or so where they blast music on top of the music that's already playing. The worst part is that there's a contained studio that's not in the middle of the gym that's vacant during that time. It's really clean and close to my house though so it's not enough to make me want to switch gums but it is really annoying and inconsiderate to 95% of the members at the gym... read more

Ok, I'm giving this club 3 stars. I'll start with the good part first. I joined the gym in Green Brook NJ and was pleased to learn that a typical membership allows you to use any of their gyms at any time. I checked out the Clark NJ location and was VERY impressed with the wide variety of equipment there. I can't imagine what more a person could want in the way of choices of equipment in their gym. That's the main reason for the 3 stars. Now the bad part. It appears that they don't fix equipment that is broken. They have 2 rowers, one that's missing the strap on the left foothold, the other that has a chain badly in need of oil. (At least I think that's all it needs. It is VERY noisy and the resistance is excessive.) Either of these 2 things could be easily fixed, I would think. Ok, now the worst problem with this club. No judgements? HA, HA, HA, forget it. If there is anything at all unusual about your workout (and I admit mine is pretty unusual), not only will they judge you, they will mock you (that's my experience). As I was exiting the club today, I noticed that the guy at the front desk seemed to find something funny. He looked directly at me with a smirk on his face. I said "Take Care", with no reply, and I know he saw and heard me. It's not that he didn't reply that irked me, it was the smug look on his face. He appeared to be laughing at me. This is someone that the club has at the front desk, for God's sake. I would think that that's a position that calls for someone with some semblance of social skills. Can't they find someone who is at least respectful of the members that use the club? I understand there's not much they can do about immature members, but it's inexcusable for an employee. (I'll add that the employees at the Green Brook location were VERY pleasant and helpful. I guess this "problem" is isolated to the Clark location).
