"I hopped off the plane at MCI, with a dream and my big backpack" I crooned. I landed back in KC for work and went straight to Restless Spirits in North Kansas City on my way to my hotel from the airport. They put my luggage in the distillery so I could enjoy all they had to offer. I made it in-time for happy hour--$2 off cocktails and some snacks 4-6pm each night. I love the decor--lights are dim and it's very homey and cozy. The bar has books behind it and looks old-timey. It's almost mid-November but there were still Halloween decorations up and some Halloween drinks for sale in a fridge in the back. The distillery in the back is large and looming--they give tours, but I didn't take one. I sat at the bar and enjoyed being served my $2 off espresso martini from Abby and listening to her and Cheryl tell me about the history of the bar. It's predominately Irish drinks (the founders/owners are Irish) and they had a mafia-like war with another Irish brewer in the Kansas City area. That brewer's logo includes goats I believe, and Restless Spirits' includes a bunny! That's why many of their drinks have a bunny on it. The manager Adam is also from Ireland (his wife's family is from Overland Park) and is so friendly. Abby was the best bartender, really taking care of me and making me feel at home. She's thoughtful, kind, caring, fun, and funny. She worked the room well, serving a table who requested a drink from her because they liked one she made. Restless Spirits has a lot of cool merch and history (there's a merch room) and I left with a green hoodie that says "got whiskey" for my partner who loves whiskey. They've also won best distillery in Kansas City for the past few years! They offer cinnamon-flavored whiskey and so many cool Irish-American drinks and cocktails. I cannot recommend them enough for their strong and unique drinks and friendly wonderful service. read more

The first time we came to Restless was actually during a Bourbon Trail Trip to try whiskeys but we fell in love with Restless Gin. Their botanical gin started us on a gin journey and opened a new world to us with complex flavors, styles, and qualities of gin; which also made us appreciate whiskey and other liquors as well. Since then, we have been searching for any kind of gin that impressed us as much as Restless but really haven't been able to. There are many great gins of different styles like herbal, dry, and botanical but not in the same combination of flavors and smoothness as Restless. We've since had many cases of their gin and recently traveled back to KC from TX to get more of it and try more of what they offer. They do have some good whiskey as well and it's a cool spot to relax or get food from nearby restaurants. read more

I love this little distillery north of the river. They offer vodka, a variety of gin, and lots of different whiskey. I don't get to the distillery too often but when I'm able to, I like to get a cocktail. They have a lot of different options featuring the different spirits. I'm a fan of their gin so I gravitate towards those. On my last visit I tried a gin old fashioned. It was light and summery. You can make it smoked and in the future I'd definitely try it especially during the fall. If cocktails aren't your thing, they also offer flights-whiskey, 5 spirits, or 7 spirits. Service is always friendly. The distillery is quite large and there's lots of seating. It's super open and they have large windows that allow you to see more of the distillery. They do offer tours, I haven't been on one but I'd be interested. Give them a look and buy a few bottles! read more

Went on a distillery tour earlier this month with a group of friends. The guide was extremely knowledgable and walked us through the distilling process and the company's history. There's a tasting after but you can also grab a drink to take on the tour - I tried the Spicy Builders Margarita which was actually made with gin and quite tasty. Overall, it was a fun way to spend a few hours with friends, and I'd recommend it if you're looking for something low-key to do. read more

I'd read about this distillery and was impressed by the woman-owned aspect. The experience exceeded my expectations. The staff was incredibly good-natured. Friendly, helpful and proud of their place! We came with a group and everyone got something different. There were just a few snack options- keep that in mind if you're not a big drinker. I had the queen B and it was delicious! I moved on to the pink fizzy and it was also very refreshing. My date got a margarita- great, not too sweet! We'll be back for a tour sometime - and look forward to trying their other drinks. We came here with another couple for a distillery tour to celebrate my husband's and our friend's birthdays. Before the tour, we ordered a few cocktails to take with us. The staff were all very friendly. The tour was interesting and the tour guide was knowledgeable. He answered every question we had. After the tour, we were given several generous tastings of their whiskey, vodka, and gin. I am not a big whiskey drinker, so I only tried a sip of the vodka and gin. Stopped here Saturday evening with some out of town friends while we bar hopped around the great little suburb of North Kansas City; or as it so wants to be referred to - River North. Restless Spirits is a great vibe with a loose yet sophisticated Irish air and really great people behind the bar. The four of us each had 2 drinks and sampled 5 different cocktails. I stuck with two whiskey "forward" drinks (thanks for building my vocabulary) A potent Old Fashioned; made from their Gullytown single malt and then a Stone Sour using their Stone Breaker blended American/Irish whiskey with citrus. Both delicious although next time I would reverse the order in which I consumed them. I'm eager to return for the tour sometime soon and learn more about their story and products and hopefully some new terminology to use in Yelp reviews moving "forward". Restless needs to be a "must visit" place for everyone in town and out of town! I love their back story and being a woman-owned business. The space is cool and not too big. I've been for a handful of events and they staff is always so nice and informative of what they're serving. We love their spirits and have totally bought bottles to have at home. We learned about Restless Spirits while attending Gin World in St. Louis. On a weekend trip to KC, we knew we had to check out their distillery. We arrived on a Saturday evening for a tour and tasting. While we waited, we grabbed a cocktail and browsed the merchandise. The distillery is small and the tour is relatively quick, but informative. We were able to taste their products and were educated on the differences. I was never a gin drinker in the past, but they make a gin for people like me. It's delicious and we brought a bottle home. I can't believe Restless Spirits has been in almost in by back yard all this time and didn't get here until today. I'd enjoyed their Stonebreaker whiskey, so I was excited to take a tour and taste everything. Jesse gave us a tour, explaining the distilling process and what makes Irish whiskey Irish, and even letting us climb up and look at fermenting mash. Then she served up their five spirits and told us about the business, including the fact that Benay is the only woman distiller in the state of Missouri and one of only six in the country! I liked everything, but what surprised me most was the vodka. I'm not a vodka drinker because I always thought it tasted like straight alcohol. Theirs, though, has a just a hint of sweetness and a smooth enough mouth feel that I could actually drink it neat. My favorite, though, is the gin. The balance of the juniper and other botanicals (she gave us a sniff of them out in the distillery room, and I'd love to use is for potpourri) is absolutely beautiful! I have two bottles of other stuff at home I'll mix in tonic, but the Builders is just going on ice. The space is big and open, with some high top tables, seats at the bar, and a couple of sofas comfy enough to hang for awhile. It's getting hard to make time for all the watering holes opening up in NKC, but don't miss this one! read more

A friendly, family owned young distillery with a great and varied line-up of distilled & sourced blends, and accompanying spirits. My brother & I came in and did the full tasting. Everyone there was kind, informative, and good for conversation, as we went through the Whiskey, gin, vodka, and moonshine they had. The tasting was super affordable, and each drink had it's own bragging rights. My palette trends away from Irish Whiskey, but I enjoyed most of the Irish-styled & blended tasters they had. For being their youngest (and most affordable), the Erin was very easy-to-drink - would make a great daily sip - probably my second favorite, after the GullyTown, which started with notes of maple & cherry and went from there, with a really interesting experiment of tastes. A near desert whiskey, but without being saccharine or candy coated. It felt balanced and kept you searching for flavors in the aftertaste. Worth adding, the gin was a shocking mix of black pepper & anise, and a nice surprise in how much I liked it. Like a peppery sambuca, but with a gin's lightness in consistency. The 15yr whiskey was the kind of Irish profile I typically shy away from, but it did leave nice after-notes of vanilla & marshmallow for me. They also offer water and snacks, but it's walkable from a great restaurant, which is a blessing, because you'll likely want more of the whiskey & conversation once you're done with the tasting, and will need some respite (and grub) once you're through. Great for a groups or for a couples tasting, and the distillery is open for tours. Recommended! read more

My metric for taking tours: did I want to take out my phone and check my email to kill time? And today I did not! It was efficient and I learned about whiskey aging. Knowing that our fellow tour patrons were rude to my party, the tour guide offered to give us a supplemental tour and personal tasting of gin, whiskey and vodka. The bartender made me an Old Fashioned with cherry butters. Oh my goodness! The whiskey was so good. I had two. This business brews their own beer and whiskey. They offer tours as well. There's not a lot of seating inside but the best spot in the house is the bar or the lounge (couch) area. I HIGHLY recommend this spot for the guys or a girls night, even date night! Kansas City, you are full of surprises. We were at Cinder Block across the street when we spotted this gem on Yelp. Boyfriend walked by and saw the huuuuge sign for spirits and insisted we walk in. This is a small local distillery that makes a gin and a whiskey. I'm not a big drinker, but was intrigued by the big copper contraption in their back room so they invited us inside for a tour. We learned about their process and honestly it was just so cool to see all the different aging barrels and equipment. Everyone was super nice and just happy to be able to practice their craft. The liquor is good, and fairly priced. Gin was some of the best gin my boyfriend has had. They're still selling their first few batches, so each bottle is hand labeled - so cool! Boyfriend bought a bottle of each for his growing liquor collection. Definitely a great gift idea and a great way to celebrate a local product. Go check it out!!!! read more

My disclaimer is that I came for Second Saturday (a North KC thing to promote local businesses) with the excitement to hear a local band without a cover charge. Once more, it's IRISH! Into the Sun play every second and fourth Saturday of the month from 3pm-5pm, as of this writing. They have multiple instruments and blend in rhythmic instrumentals. In other words, it's not all about singing. It brought back memories of KC Irish Fest, on a smaller and more intimate scale. My only drink there was an Irish Coffee, and I look forward to trying their other cocktails. The next time I come, I'm bringing company and going on a tour. If you're indecisive, they do offer several different flights so you can sample many different cocktails or spirits. I can't say enough great things about Restless Spirits. Mike & Benay were so incredibly kind & helpful & super knowledgeable! My bf is a huge whiskey fan & quite honestly, I am not. Benay suggested GullyTown & wow, it was a totally unique experience. Sweet with a little spice but notes of honey or something. I'm so not a good whiskey reviewer.
