We ate at Calcuta on Rua do Norte most recently in September, 2018. This was our 3rd visit, after eating there twice during a trip to Lisbon in 2016. My wife was really looking forward to returning here in 2018 but we were disappointed. Nothing was bad. It was just mediocre. It wasn't as good as our visits in 2016. We arrived just after they opened for dinner at 6PM. Although we were the only people in the restaurant, we weren't allowed to sit in their one window seat because they keep that open for a writer who frequents the place. We also weren't able to get any naan bread because they didn't pre-heat the oven and said it would take 30-45 minutes after opening for it to be ready. The Papari Masali (papadums) were decent, as were the Chamuças de Frango (samosas). An order of jirra rice is definitely enough for 2. My wife had a spicy chicken curry dish that isn't on the menu on the web site. I had a Seekh kabab, a grilled minced lamb kabab. It was good, but overcooked. The total price was 36 Euros, including beers, which I have nothing to complain about. All in all, it was, as I said before, mediocre. The server and staff were friendly as always. We will probably return for a late night curry after a night of Bairro Alto drinking, but there are other Indian restaurants in Lisboa that have been recommended by an Indian friend that we will likely pursue for a planned dinner next visit. read more

Our review might be different from other review was we are vegetarian. I will clarify from the beginning that the rating is just for good, the staff was very courteous and friendly, and the service very good. Also, I think that by now we had been pampered by the amazing quality of indian food in Spain and Portugal. The dosappointment begin with the vegetarian entree options which were just 5. It was a first for us in an indian restaurant. We ordered onion bhajia as starters, chana Masala and baingan Bharta with jeera rice and roti as main entrees. Spices were minimal, roti was dry. Instead, the food was on the sweeter side. We had mango kulfi for dessert which was good. Overall, in Lisbon I would avoid this restaurant especially for vegetarians. read more

We are traveling through Portugal & Spain in a customized tour for 5 Indian families with RED Tours. Before coming to this restaurant we had been to several restaurants and were left looking for a change from the same punjabi cuisine (naan, subji, daal, rice) over and over. We worked with our tour director and requested pav bhaji, veg. biryani & chicken tikka. We were greeted with a friendly staff. The restaurant is relatively small - our group of 21 people pretty much filled it up - but has a pleasing ambience. We thoroughly enjoyed the pav bhaji & veg. biryani. I am a vegetarian but all those who had the chicken tikka were unanimous in its praise. Overall we had a great experience here and recommend this restaurant to anyone interested in having delicious Indian cuisine. read more

This was a place we picked solely on guidebook recommendation and as it was less than 90 seconds walk from our apartment it was an easy choice. It's small, 40 seats and no outside tables, I think it might get a bit hot in there when it fills up. We were the first in there at 7.30 and several others followed us. Service was attentive and not over bearing, food was excellent, probably the tastiest meal we've had so far in Lisbon although having had Goan curry before I gave that a miss, too hot for me. Disappointing the promised Kingfisher beer on the menu turned out to be Cobra - too gassy so I went for a local bar instead. I can't mark them down for that as the rest was so good. 2 starters, rice and curry for 2 with 2 large beers came to 35 euro. read more

My partner and I had both Chicken Tikka, it was great, absolutely can't complain. I had Cheese Garlic Naan, which I really loved. But setting the Coke cans next to our glasses was a bit, well, without wanting to sound snobby, a little classless. It would have been a little more like a restaurant and not a kebab shop. And the tables were a little bit too close to each other, we had to pull them back and forth to get out of our seats. If they'd put a little more thought in to these really small, quickly modifiable things then I would give them all 5 stars. But the food was very good and that is the main thing, so I would definitely recommend it. read more

Best Indian restaurant in Lisbon - even though it was the only one we were in - at least in Lisbon ;-) They serve authentic Indian food and I can only recommend the Mix Vegetable Curry. First and foremost let me preface by saying that this was not our first choice when it came to Indian food. The restaurant we picked and recommended by an Indian vendor was closed and Calcutá happened to be just around the corner. We ordered saag paneer and Kadai gosh. Food was mediocre at best. Will most definitely never go back. I have tasted better Indian food and the roti that we ordered was like eating a cracker. read more

We are visiting from NY and ate here on our first night in Lisbon. We felt bad not trying Portuguese on our first night but are so glad we came here because the food was INCREDIBLE!!! Some of the best Indian we've had and we're Indian. :) The owner personally saw to what we should order based on our preferences/restrictions. We ended up with the lamb seekh kebab (served piping hot and bursting with flavor), the yellow daal, and the prawn curry for entrees (accompanied by garlic naan and tandoori roti). All delicious! We also started with the chicken samosa, some onion bhaji (fritters) and papad masala - again so delicious. All three of us repeatedly commented throughout the meal how good everything was and how much we were enjoying it. By the time we finished, the owner joked that we must not have received our food because all the dishes were wiped clean! Came pretty highly recommended so we tried it out. The service was very good and friendly. The restaurant was very clean and had a nice atmosphere. We went sort of boring on the food choice- chicken masala. It was very tasty. Should have branched out a bit but overall experience was good. Great indoor outdoor seat with alley view.
