Yelping community, I have done you all a favor. I have finally remembered to get the address of the best authentic Mexican in all of Appleton. No small feat, considering this charming hole-in-the-wall has no address printed anywhere on the building and that I suffered considerable anxiety in deciding whether to pose my question in Spanish or English.
La Michoacana has served all of my Mexican food needs ever since I moved here from Kansas City and felt so bereft of the Latino community I had grown to know at home. Here, real Mexican tortas de milanesa or al pastor and tacos made with delicious marinated pork. But the true winner of the taco crown is the tongue taco, an exquisite dish whose subtle beauty only Mexicans seem able to grasp. And when I mean tacos, I don't mean those hard shelled, cheese-slathered and lettuce stuffed insults to the true-believer palette. I mean meat, onion and cilantro, corn tortilla. Real tacos.
There is plenty to choose from aside from tacos, though. There is a good sampling of many a strange and wonderful dish. And if there is some stick in the mud among your group, they can even order enchiladas. I recommend the horchata to drink, they make it on the premises.
The delicious food of the La Michoacana has served its owners, it would seem, as the place has finally finished its floors and purchased a larger flat-screen TV with which to spread the good message of Univision. Though they've kept the bizarrely inaccurate sign, which displays faded yellow images of bread-baking and croissants.
If you like your Mexican food as I do, simple, delicious and eaten with large Mexican families at your side, La Michoacana is the place to go.
Finding it is pretty hard though. Drive south on Memorial from college avenue. It'll be on the right after crossing the river after the bend in the road. Look for a large sign that sign that says Utopia, that's their neighbor, a hair salon. Sadly, Michoacana selected the colors of the Mexican flag for their sign, and the white print doesn't show up to well on the white portion of the flag. Definitely worth the effort. read more
