La Scarpetta - Bruschetta appetizer

Wow, just wow. I meandered spontaneously into this gem of a place as a solo traveler. Our tour…read moreguide had recommended 2 other places, but I know from experience that their suggestions are typically limited to pre-negotiated arrangements with the owners and/or locations that can accommodate larger groups. As a policy, I always look for my own spots. I found this pasta place based on its high ratings, grateful it was open out of season. It is small, so it cannot accommodate very large groups, but it is an exquisitely charming spot. The atmosphere is outstanding: Swiss vibes all the way and killer music (think We're Together by Jack Johnson and Downtown by Petula Clark). In the spirit of any place who wants to master its food, they do not have 1 million options on the menu. I got the Bruschetta (their house specialty) as an appetizer, and their Fresh Pasta (Meat) option of the day which came with a sage pesto sauce and crisp bacon. My photos do not capture the depth and comfort dimensions of the flavors, but I tried! Pasta is meant to be warm and cozy and filling, and this delivered. Balanced by the delicate flavors of sage, extra-virgin olive oil, and freshly grated cheese. I rarely finish my meals and asked for the rest to go, which did not seem to bother them one bit. The service was excellent. (Even the bathroom was cute, could not help but take a picture there) A true gem!

They serve a shorter menu than many of the other Nobu restaurants but all the classic dishes like the Black Cod with Miso are there. The sushi were ok (hard to make the difference between those and the sushi from much cheaper real Japanese restaurants across Europe). But in summary it was excellent, with good fast service and in the amazing setting of the Badrutt Palace. A trip to the Palace is I guess a necessary stop in a St Moritz trip and the restaurant is located in a very pleasant room with elegant and comfortable wooden chairs. Not sure how often Nobu himself is there though The only downside is the price really so we won't do that every night!

What is noteworthy about this place during Christmas is the clientele, as this hotel is where Europe's elite converge during late December, mixed with a few middle easterners and Russians. They engage in a delightfully conspicuous gameshow of "who came out of the most expensive vagina and can prove it by how they dress", which is amazing to watch. You get the sense that the only people who "earned" their wealth in this old money crowd are the young attractive females sitting with the decrepit older well dressed men, both staring at their mobile phones for most of the meal. This place is perhaps worth it for the people watching alone!

The staff took our order, brought the food, and later asked for a tip, but there was very little warmth or hospitality throughout the experience. What hurt us most was noticing that other guests were treated in a much friendlier and more polite manner, while we felt ignored and unwelcome. No one checked on us during the meal to ask how the food was, and when we left, nobody thanked us or said goodbye. We have traveled around the world and dined in many different restaurants, and this was one of the most uncomfortable experiences we have had. We even wondered whether we were judged by our appearance, especially because we had unfortunately lost our jackets on the train earlier that day and were not dressed as we normally would be. We understand that everyone can have a busy or difficult day, but hospitality and respect should be shown equally to all guests.

Veal was good but nothing special about it. It's easy to find same quality plates somewhere else. Sole, was overcooked. How do I know? I hade to use my knife to cut through the fish. Service: average at best. However, table next to us got lot of attention from the manager/ owner. Maybe the size of your order determines the amount of attention you get! Also, we wanted to sit inside, but were told that all tables were reserved for 1:30pm. 1:30 came and no one showed up. 2:00 came and there still empty tables inside. So, that's my impression of the place. We expected more. Would I go back? Nope, but you make your own choice.

Thankfully they sat us even though we were not properly dressed. Service was excellent. Cozy, warm ambience inside - some outdoor seating with heaters. Good wine selection; greens were fresh for the salad & the truffle angel hair pasta was good. Needed some parm for additional flavor. We were both disappointed in the quality of the steak, particularly at the price for the largest piece. Very sinewy - not a good cut of meat. However - good flavor - was cut tableside and served with mashed potatoes & vegetables.
