ROAR is a brand-new, cat-inspired gift gallery. The owners have hand-picked a number of cat supplies (like toys, treats, etc), as well as a great selection of goods for humans dedicated to feline enthusiasts. No tacky stuff here! They have curated a nice set of things that I wouldn't be embarrassed to have in my home. It's a small shop but they've packed a lot in there and will continue to search for great looking goods. I particularly loved the little handmade, felted wool plant holder kitties! I bought one but am eyeing more. Meow!

She also creates a safe space to bring them in - and it's one of my cat's favorite places! Laura lets her make herself at home. I love how welcoming she is for cats and their owners alike! ROAR needs to become a Portland staple for visitors and locals alike. I'm in Vancouver, but this is the only place I go for toys, treats, and amazing, sincere service. Please, PLEASE check them out! The service was prompt and friendly, and our server was happy to give us his feedback on various drinks. I chose the Redrum, which was described as being like a rum negroni, but to me it was more like a rum Manhattan. It came in a bell with smoke, so the presentation was fantastic. My friend did the Bone Collector, which was a non-alcoholic version of the haunted orange grove inspired drink, and she said it tasted like a creamsicle. It came with a beaker with an orange light and dry ice! (They were careful to tell us not to drink out of the glass, and just use the straw.) We also split the bread pudding (I can't remember the spooky name for it), and that was delightful. Ambiance is 10/10 (make sure you walk around the building, especially toward the back rooms and the bathroom).

If you want a place that truly captures the 'Keep Portland Weird' vibe, this is it! It's Halloween 24/7, with dark, moody decor around every corner. Jump scares in the bathroom. Thunder and lightening in the back rooms. You'll know you're in for a memorable treat! During the holidays, it transforms into a Krampus-themed experience, which is just as fun. The food and drinks are a little on the pricey side, but they're delicious and photo worthy for the gram. And around every corner of this place is incredibly photogenic. Expect a wait around Halloween and Christmas, so I'd recommend making a reservation during those busy seasons. Otherwise, it's usually easy to grab a table. Raven's Manor is absolutely worth experiencing.

So far, I haven't seen a hole in the toys. Worthy!! You can find them at the Saturday Market. Go early if you want more choices, I got there a little after lunch and their eggs and avocados were gone. Not too many designs left for the body pillows either. There were a couple of wands, carrots, and eggplants. If I recalled correctly, the body pillow was $10 and the carrot was $12. They are all about catnip and stuffing it in different shaped toys that keep your kitty entertained! The Catnip Body pillow, a long narrow tube shape, is their most popular item. The cats hug it, kick it with their back paws, rub all over it and when the catnip knocks them out, they sleep on it! They also have carrot shaped ones, small love triangles and other cat toys. The body pillows come in all patterns so you can pick colors you like or colors that go with your house, which is what I do. I've bought the gray and black leopard print and recently, a really cool geometric print in gray and white. When I walked in the door today with the body pillow, the two cats immediately start sniffing, the scent is that strong and they got so excited. I thought my older cat wouldn't be interested so I only bought one today and that was a bad decision. My two cats who are normally BFFs were literally fighting over the pillow! I'll be going back next week to buy another! If you have a cat or know someone who does, stop by their stand and buy some homemade catnip toys. They are $9 and worth every penny. I would cringe every time a car went by... Twelve months ago, she came across the street to check me out while I was outside my back door. She was very shy and scared, but I could see she was also very hungry and thin. She was asking me for help, I could tell. Over a period of several weeks, I gained her trust and was feeding her daily outside. We became very close; she was very, very sweet. Winter was coming, so I built her a shelter out of a large 2x2x3 foot plastic storage bin with a lid. I insulated the interior walls, and I even put an electric heating pad inside. (there just happened to be an electric outlet in the outside wall, right next to the bin.) I placed her food and water bowls inside, and she got comfortable inside pretty quickly. When she wasn't inside it, she would be perched on top when I came out to feed her and visit. She seemed relieved to have a safe place to be, and a friend to give her love. When she looked up at me with her one yellow eye and one brown eye, we really started to bond. At some point, she stopped wanting to go into the shelter. I thought maybe some other animal had gone in and left its scent. The freezing temperatures were fast approaching, so I decided to adopt her and bring her inside to live. Even though I was feeding her a lot of food, she was still thin, and she was a pretty small adult kitty to begin with; I was afraid she might freeze to death otherwise. I already had two cats; they all seemed to get along fine after a few weeks went by. After a few months, everything was calm and casual among them. The two big boys like to wrestle with each other sometimes; maybe two or three times a week they get in the mood. The little girl though, who I named 'Moonpie', had no desire to participate; she was happy just to watch. A whole year went by, and Moonpie and I had a strong bond, along with the two boys. About ten days ago, Moonpie's cheek started to swell up. I was worried, because that usually indicates a tooth problem. I know that can involve X-rays, blood tests, antibiotics, tooth extraction under anesthetic, and a special medicinal diet... All of that can cost $1,000 or more I would estimate, and I just didn't have the money to deal with it. Someone suggested taking Moonpie to the Longview Humane Society to see if they could help. I called, and they said they had people who could treat her for free, even if it was a bad tooth. I took her in, and they told me that if Moonpie could be saved, I could have her back. They called me the next morning, and I was very happy to hear that my little kitty had no tooth problems at all, just an abscess that needed to be drained. They said she would be fine, and I could come get her after they treated her with antibiotics for three days. While Moonpie was there, I spent the whole time thinking how I would donate money to the organization when I could in the near future, because I was so grateful that they were willing to help me for free; I just didn't have any money at the time of the emergency. After the weekend and the Columbus Day holiday, I was ready to go pick up Moonpie; I was really looking forward to seeing her gentle little face, without the swollen cheek. I called on Tuesday to check the status. I spoke to Dreama, (or Drima?) who was the person who received the cat days before. To my shock, she told that Moonpie had been given to someone else and she now had a new home, and I couldn't have her back. I told her how wrong this situation was, and it should NOT be happening. She argued with me, and put words in my mouth that I never said; She said that I had told her before that I didn't want Moonpie back, which was utter bullshit. I suspect what happened was, someone in the office there fell in love with her sweet little face just as I had, so they just decided to take her for themself. Dreama, this isn't over.

Long story short, I filled out an application and now we're best friends. My friend also found a snuggle guy to take home. We were allowed to spend as much time as we wanted with any cat. Everyone we talked to was polite and accommodating. Their facility was very clean and well organized. The cats were clean and the multi-level cages they are kept in are also clean and surprisingly spacious, with their own litter box separate from their sleeping and eating quarters. I was pretty impressed. They seem very professional, and I was surprised to read some of the other reviews. Judging from the tone of those reviews, I'd take them with a grain of salt. I didn't have that experience at all. In fact, while I was there they got a phone call from someone who "needed a puppy today for a birthday party." They refused to supply a random person a gift animal, and I'm very happy I was there to overhear it. People shouldn't give kids random animals at birthday parties. Those animals end up neglected or returned. It's sick that people treat animals like objects. I would very much recommend them to any serious animal lover.
