We just adopted a young cat from Furry Friends and it was a great experience. All of their cats are in foster homes, and unlike so many other rescues now, you get to actually go and meet the cats in person before you adopt. The kitty we adopted was Special Needs and they had already done x-rays and a full vet exam which they immediately forwarded to our vet. Kitty was already fixed and had initial vaccines, all included in the very low adoption fee. The foster family was welcoming and knowledgeable and gave us plenty of time to visit with him and make our decision without pressure. I was very impressed and will probably adopt our next cat through them. Great rescue with wonderful people!

Bonded indeed! They love a lap and a warm blanket.

How good is that? They actually care that much where the animals are going and want to make sure they are not going someplace where they could be let outdoors and be harmed or living in a bad environment. To this day the company I work for and myself collect donations to help out their Cat and Dog shelters. I am so grateful there is a place like this that really does care about what happens what the animals leave their care. More places should take lessons from them. They find loving homes, not throw away money collection adoptions. Thank you for all you do, please don't stop. Thank you for speaking for those that can't speak for themselves. Jerry

During the adoption process we found out that Susie was around 1 year old and found as a stray with her kittens. She was almost dead from lack of food, but was continuing to nurse her kittens regardless of her own health. Once her kittens and her were returned to full health she was spayed, but her body reacted badly procedure and once again she almost died. The shelter kept giving her continuos care and once again returned her to full health, and that is when we found her. I cannot thank this shelter enough for caring to help her through her tough young life and not giving up and euthanizing her. She is a great cat and I am so happy to have supported such a great shelter! Give this shelter a look if you're looking to adopt!

Volunteers work every day, 365 days each year, to clean and maintain the shelter, feed and look after resident kitties and those looking for their forever homes. No kitty is turned away. Thankfully, I was able to find my temporary fix here at Oregon Dog Rescue. The fostering program is awesome! You fill out a basic online application and then you get nearly weekly emails with opportunities to foster. The coordinator is very good about sharing all relevant details: good with kids, plays well with other pets, etc. they provide all of the food and supplies, too! The dog walking program might be my favorite! No minimum monthly commitments like most agencies to stay active as a walker... you sign up on their website and they offer four slots per day: 7am, 10am, 12pm and 4pm. You get an hour to spend time with a dog in need of some company and exercise. The employees are friendly and approachable. I have very positive things to say about my extended bout as a volunteer here at ODR! I definitely plan to adopt from this place when I'm finally ready... and I'll get my canine fix in plentiful doses in the meantime!

Soleil "Suki" was a Special Needs dog that had difficulty in the shelter environment, struggled in Foster Care due to her strong prey drive as well as a fierce reactivity and fear aggression. HSSW did everything they could to keep her from being euthanized. One of the fabulous volunteers (Dorota) saw the potential in this wonderful dog and helped me to see it too. Then my wonderful trainer (Cierra) from HSSW Behavioral & Training Center, worked with Suki and I on her mental and behavioral needs, to ensure we had all the tools for Suki to be a happy well adjusted girl, that we all knew she could be. 5 months later, I can proudly say she is just a delight, we work on her training skills everyday and are making improvements with her reactivity skills, she still has ways to go regarding her insecurities with both strangers and DOGS BUT...we conquered her prey drive regarding my cat, so I haven't any doubt that she will overcome her anxious reactions towards DOGS and humans. I am convinced that there are no BAD dogs, just misunderstood dogs that simply lack confidence and the positive reinforcement that they need to succeed. After 5 months of my intense study on dog behavior, what affects their mental status and being offered professional training from the wonderful people at HSSW, I haven't any doubts about her or any other dog in the shelter being adoptable. HSSW has come a long way in helping in every way they can, financially, physically, and mentally to secure that their animals find good homes. I truly cannot highlight my experience with this adoption to have been anything but positive and successful. I love my Suki girl, she was worth every effort made by all. Adopt a Dog, Save a Life!

It seemed impossible to adopt the dog we wanted due to the amount of applications coming in. We ended up adopting "May" and the process was smooth, the staff made sure to ask us valid questions and were very friendly. Thank you for allowing us to adopt May. It was nice to be able to adopt a dog and not make it a super difficult process but at the same time you assured us that you weren't just letting anyone just take the dog. We were able to spend as much time as we wanted and they were very patient and answered all of our questions. They also gave us a collar, food and snacks for May.

We requested a low energy dog and was told the one we were interested in was like this. His ad mentioned some training required but that he was otherwise laid back. The shelter told us he was only leash reactive. This was not the case. We brought the dog home and he was high energy and needed an incredible amount of training. Most notably he was highly reactive, which requires special training, and we were never informed he was like this. Reactive dogs can turn aggressive if it is not dealt with. His vet records, which were only given to us after his adoption, showed that he had a long history of reactivity and being on anti-anxiety medication that we were never told about. We reached out to the shelter for help 3 days after bringing the dog home and they didn't respond. It wasn't until we told the shelter that the dog was not a fit for our family that they responded, 2 days after our initial request. The shelter then told us we had to wait 9 more days before we could return the dog to their care, even after requesting a sooner date because he was causing a lot of stress to our household. When we returned the dog, the associate did not let us inside, and took his leash from my hand. I asked if we needed to fill out any intake paperwork. She said no so I asked if we could fill out paperwork because there was a lot of information they didn't tell us about the dog. She said no again, said there wasn't anything else they needed from us, and shut the door in our face. We had to wait nine days for an intake appointment that lasted less than a minute and required nothing but us passing over his leash. This was after we explained the amount of distress he was causing our dogs and the safety risk he posed due to his energy level and my partner's disability. It is clear that the shelter does not care where their dogs end up. This was an incredibly stressful 2 weeks for both my family and the dog because the shelter was not honest about his personality. This dog needs to be with a very specific household, and based on everything we told them about ourselves, we were not it. It seems it was more important to them that he was adopted by somebody, rather than him being adopted by the right family who could provide him what he needs. He suffers the most in this situation.
