I've been renting from Republic storage for a year now. It all went smoothly until the new management took over. Two months ago, my credit union decided to issue me with a new bank card with a chip in it. Swell. So I contacted this particular Republic storage to update my automatic billing information. The self-proclaimed college-educated woman said that she could not take the debit card number over the phone and that I had to come into the office to update it. Since I know that most everyone gives and takes this kind of information over the phone all the time, I charmed her into taking it over the phone to save me a trip across town, which she did. Then a week later, the same female college graduate called me back and said that my card was declined. Knowing that that was an absolute impossibility I asked her what card number she was using and it turned out she was using the old debit card number. Okay, so it must have been a community college she went to. Fine. So I gave her all of the correct information again and asked if there would be any late fee. She said no and I hung up thinking that that was over. Then, two and a half weeks later I got a letter in the mail saying that my storage is past due that there is a late fee. Okay, so she was not exactly in the top half of her class. I called her up and while I was not pleased, I was nevertheless civil and articulate and never used any bad language with her.....but apparently I did do something much worse - I tactfully related to her our past phone calls and asked her to be accountable. She could have been polite, accommodating and, heaven forbid, competent, but she got huffy and gave me the old line that it was my fault and that she was just "trying to work with [me]." I advised her that there is a difference between "trying to work with someone and being competent." Then she hung up on me. From there I was able to deduce that her college degree was definitely in the social sciences or liberal arts and that she skipped charm school all together. The woman who was there before, whatever her meagre qualifications, and mismatched socks, simply was efficient, competent and gave at least a minimal darn about customer service. I'm submitting my thirty days notice on the next business day. read more
