He was called up for a deployment with short notice so he packed up his belongings and answered the call. Unfortunately, he was injured (physically and emotionally) during his tour. He returned to Michigan to recover. Every month, for over 20 YEARS, he would call the facility, speak to a nice lady for upwards of 20 minutes about her day and pay his bill. Sadly, she informed him of her retirement and the change of ownership. This is when everything went downhill. He decided it was time to make the trip back to Idaho to finally close out the out-of-sight, out-of-mind bit from his past. We flew from Michigan, rented a massive UHaul, and arrived to the facility. We were met by two individuals who, upon first greeting, were wildly unhelpful. We informed them that he was unable to track down the unit's keys after all of these years (and not to mention a recent house fire) so we would need bolt cutters. Their response: "Due to liability, it is against our policy to permit bolt cutters on the premises. We have 'a guy' who can cut the lock but he may be able to get to it later tonight." I offered an alternative solution. Aside from being a veteran, I am firefighter. I am not opposed to asking a local department for a favor with their assistance in gaining access. They were quick to say that was also not permitted. When we went back to his unit, it was discovered that his lock had previously been removed and a different style lock had been placed. Without an explanation, one of the individuals took a master key and unlocked the unit. I was enraged. He was never informed that his unit had the lock removed nor replaced by the new company's lock. After a full day of emptying the unit, we had a single box of trash (mostly sweat rags and Gatorade bottles) that needed to be discarded. We checked in with the office to inform them that he had completed the task and asked where they moved the dumpsters, since they were no longer up front. The individuals again were unhelpful, saying there were no longer dumpsters on site and it was his responsibility to remove all waste. They offered a solution for my SO to drive the 20-ft UHaul across a 4 lane road into a private apartment complex to dump the trash into their dumpsters. Again, I was enraged. He had this unit longer than one of these individuals were alive. It was clear that this was the most authority and power these two people had managed thus far in their lives. When two veterans travel across the nation to empty a storage unit that has been in good standings for over 20 YEARS, possibly, maybe, consider some customer service, instead of the scripted response of "No, that's our policy. We could lose our jobs." Abridged Version: This company, without informing the customer, replaced his lock with their own, then had piss-poor customer service from start to finish. Not only will we never use Stor-It Self Storage again, but we have vowed to stay clear of Idaho in its entirety. The experience had that much of an impact.

There was water slippage inside from recent rain and leaking from the roof. We promptly notified staff that weather stripping was not up to date, though the units around ours were. They were unavailable from Saturday at 11am when we called until 12:30 Monday afternoon, when they would "meet with us" to change out the weather stripping. With more rain on the way we advised that it was more emergent. Staff did not care, did not follow up, or reach out regarding the issue. We moved to a new unit Sunday and notified them via email to cancel.l, along with the issues we faced with said units again. We were met with "please come back and do business with us in the future!" No accountability, they do not offer insurance and they do not care for their customers. STAY AWAY from this terrible business.

There is a pest and spider problem as well, and they really need to get these treated so that the items stored here have a fighting chance to survive their time here. It looks like they are just getting started, but they will definitely need to improve their security surveillance systems and their storage units if they are going to make it after the current boom of people moving in slows down or more storage units are built closer in. They are also still growing, so although you may have a vehicle parked in one place, they will call you and tell you that you now need to move to a new location because they want to improve the last place you parked. Kind of a pain if you don't have the time. Super nice people, but the business needs work to become something viable long term.

I would not recommend Public Storage based on my experience. Their advertised rates may get you in…read morethe door, but they dramatically increase your rent after you've moved in. After just six months of automatic, on-time payments, our monthly rent increased by $63. My husband and I both called and left messages, but despite being told someone would return our calls, no one ever did. When I called again a few weeks later, I waited on hold for 15-20 minutes before finally reaching someone. While I was on hold, I checked their current online pricing. The exact same 10x15 unit was being advertised for $106 per month, yet we had started at $140 and had been increased to $203. When I asked why, I was told the contract allowed for rate increases and that it was based on "supply and demand." I found that explanation hard to believe, especially since the advertised rate for new customers was so much lower. The representative offered to reduce our rent to $157, but that still meant we were paying significantly more than new renters. The following week, I stopped by the Caldwell location and asked how many 10x15 units were available. The employee told me they had 11 available. After I explained what I had been told over the phone, the employee simply replied, "Yeah, we're supposed to say that." In my opinion, this pricing strategy is misleading and unfair to loyal customers. We moved out on the 31st, and I will never rent from Public Storage again or recommend them to anyone.
