Solicited services for a board and batten accent wall installation from this business on Thumbtack. To preface, I have personally done a DIY board and batten wall and decided that using a precut kit for THIS project was a better alternative toward achieving a cleaner look than using wooden planks. With the kit, the size, shape and texture variation should essentially be a non-factor. The invoice statement that the two gentlemen were supposed to install the Amazon Board and Batten kit, caulk it and paint it.
While we do greatly appreciate the time spent on the project, we are disappointed with several aspects of the workmanship and overall execution. The level of attention to the small details and finishings just wasn't there. The wall was not measured prior to installation, which originally resulted in uneven spacing of the boards. The boards were initially placed using visual estimation and were going to be left that way until a family member stepped in and provided the proper spacing formula. There was about 30-40 minutes of constant removal and replacement of the boards before the use of the spacing formula which I believe caused the project to take significantly longer than it should have. Well that and apparently they were unaware of the fact that the entire design (wall and boards) needed to be painted, not just the boards. After everything was in place, they took everything down to paint outside until they realized the wall would need to be painted too. At which point they had to put everything back on the wall. This process also ate up so much time. They charge by the hour, the invoice was billed at 3.33 hours but it really shouldn't have taken more than 2.5 hours.
Additionally, the invoice also indicates caulking was completed, but this service was NOT rendered. There are also nail holes that were not at all filled before painting, and they remain clearly visible throughout the wall. Portions of the original wall paint above the board and batten (see photos) was damaged during their removal of the painters tape, and no touch-ups or corrections were offered or provided. There were no complicating factors (such as outlet cutting), yet this was also billed and mentioned in the invoice.
The final result does not meet the standard of quality we discussed prior to the start of the project or what one would reasonably expect for this type of professional work, especially at this price point. We did send a message to communicate our concerns and request a reduction in the final invoice to better reflect the level of workmanship delivered but they were unwilling to adjust the amount. They did offer to return to view the work and make adjustments, however, after the initial level of workmanship we are reluctant to allow further manipulation. From a professional standpoint, it is morally and ethically acceptable to charge someone for services that were clearly not rendered (caulking and cutting for an outlet).
This business has many great reviews, although, from what I have seen none of the other projects are quite like this one. In any case, proceed at your own risk! read more
