First time here, and I know I'll be here many times over…read more There's nothing like being near the water. The view doesn't disappoint. Totally worth the payoff of hiking down (and back up). The trail (non-paved) to the beach is moderately steep. Loose gravel in some points so be careful. It's pretty narrow too. The paved walkway backup is also steep and will get the cardio going. Along the trail are many picnic tables to sit, eat a snack, take some pics, and catch your breath. Only downside is parking is limited. Go early if you can. Overall highly recommend.

I lost an irreplaceable rod on a river yesterday. I never would have found it without the incredible help of Muaaz, one of the staff members, who was so exceedingly caring and attentive that he voluntarily managed to track down the person who grabbed it from the bank. Thank you, Muaaz! Many fly shops are intimidating. Most are uncomfortable to hang out in. Plenty of them employ "experts" who are outright disdainful and rude to customers who don't know what they're doing. Most other shops aren't designed to foster a real community, let alone bring a positive force to the larger community of the neighborhood. There isn't a single employee here who won't go above and beyond for you, whether you're an absolute novice, intermediate to expert angler, or just have a friend or family member who's into fly fishing. Need a gift for the angler in your life? Curious about why people are so obsessed with this sport? Want to understand why matching a rod with the appropriate reel, line, leader, and tippet seems so complicated? Want to know if that piece of equipment is really worth the price tag? Maybe you don't really need anything, but you'd like to hang out in a comfortable space designed for customers like you to relax and socialize. Maybe you're tinkering with the idea of getting into fly tying but have no idea where to start. Or perhaps you could really use some expert advice based extensive experience -- without being told you have to buy $2,000 worth of whatever. If any of the above rings a bell, this is the place. The junction is lucky to have EWA at their new location on California Ave. I shop here instead of buying directly from vendors because there's no price gouging or elitist vibe, and because I honestly want this business to thrive. Most of the other customers who frequent this place do too. Moving this shop from 42nd and Oregon to the heart of the junction took an enormous group effort. There's a good reason so many of its customers volunteered to help with whatever was needed. No walk today just hanging out water side with my bestie. A short walk down to the all rock beach. Be sure to bring a thick towel, a chair, or a pillow. There is small rapids here that is fun to float down. Water shoes highly recommended! And please pack out your trash. There is a bathroom next to the parking lot along with plenty of picnic benches of waterside isn't your style. The beach area has shaded areas which are perfect to avoid the sunshine. The water is very cold as well. Be careful and mentally prepared for it! Discovery Pass needed. Enjoy your life! SYOY!

There will never be a place I love more than this place. On the planet. But I come from the angle…read moreof having grown up here. My grandmother still lives within walking distance so when I say my childhood is in this water, it's no joke. I can still walk up the rock in the middle of my favorite swimming hole (at 43) like an easy set of steps and cannonball people with great enthusiasm. This park is a standalone experience. The Green River is ideal for fishing, kayaking, floating, swimming, and generally anything you'd like to do with a river except drinking. Don't do that, they pull a lot of bodies out of every year. I'd hazard a guess nearly all of those bodies made bad life choices with no respect for moving water. There is an excess of swimming holes along the stretch of river the park encompasses. This might lead you to think the fishing is also great. It is, but if it's swimming season, stick to early and late fishing because people will not respect your ill-timed line in the middle of the day. (This feud is as old as time). The camping in the park is limited although the implementation of yurts is adorable and fun, and they do accommodate RVs and tents as well. It's a great place to have an event, the availability of bathrooms and faucets has always been the standard I judge other parks by. Parking is limited, get there early or access it by taking the Long Walk. The rangers these days are young and friendly, and they deserve respect for the idiots they often have to put up with. I suggest getting the year pass for entry, you'll want to return. The park is exceptionally clean and well maintained, it hasn't changed much in the 40+ years I've known it because it's a solid setup. This is a beloved area. If you want to get drunk and stupid go upstream to the bridge or up the headworks road or downstream to Flaming Geyser area or Auburn. It's not a rowdy place, it's families doing family things. Whatever your swimming skill, there are beautiful places to put your body in the water either carefully and gently, with momentum aboard flotation apparatus, or from tall places. Respect the class IV rapids, they're easy to avoid. You can chase the sun around to all the different spots if you're apt to sunbathe, or avoid it entirely. The simple trail from one end to the other is a faerieland walk under beautiful canopy all year round. The water is pristine, the critters are adorable, and it attracts a nice style of people from many different places. Please respect it and enjoy, we're proud of this little jewel.

Phillip Arnold Park is a 10 acre park with a baseball field, basketball court, tennis courts, and…read moreplenty of room to play. It's hard to access from the old town because it's on the OTHER (eastern) side of I-405 and you need to take a fly-over. Use google maps or a GPS to find it. The park is a pretty nice neighborhood park, but that only rates it 3+ stars in my book. The 5-star aspect of this park is that it is the jumping off point for some classic, very fun and technical mountain biking. Where are the trails? You could SEE them from I-405 if you were driving south near exit 2 (although it's not convenient to access them from here) . On I-405, if you looked to your east, you would see some high-voltage electrical lines coming down the hill. The trails are on the slope in the unbuildable easement underneath and near these lines. Thank god for the powerlines or some f'ing greedy developer would have developed the crap out of this area years ago. The area might not sound very scenic -- and in a few spots it's not with powerlines crackling overhead -- but mostly it's just trees, slope, and singletrack. You can access the trails by parking at the Phillip Arnold Park parking lot. Ride south for about 1/3 mile on the access road. Look for trails to your right (west). Take any trail you might find or look for the fireroad. Back up in hyeah is the hilarity of Tapeworm, Parasite, Crop Circles and other trails. These trails are wooded, tight, twisting singletracks -- back and forth, up and down -- with obstacles like boardwalks, drops, ramps, teeter totters, fallen logs,. In spots you'll get totally wedged up by crazy and stupid lines -- drop down over a 1/2 dozen tree roots, suddenly make a tight climbing turn, go betwen two trees a handlebar's width apart and then jump over a log. In other newly developed parts (mostly to the southern end) you can find some trails with bermed turns, whoo-dee-doos, and a jump or two. Extra points if you can find "Declan's Death Ride". The whole complex is fairly rideable in winter as the area drains well, but be careful not to tear up the trails when they're wet and muddy. In the summer (especially in overgrown areas) you will want to ride with a patch kit and/or Mr. Tuffy's in your tires -- lots of blackberry thorns on the trail. These are classic east-side trails -- enjoy them safely and watch for other riders. Stop at Naan 'n Curry in downtown Renton on your way home, have some delicious curry and say "hi" to Uncle Mike. This is a great place for a morning run if training for a 5k or half marathon. Heading north from…read morethe park is a great run that is round trip just shy of 3 miles. Running south you can run to Lake Meridian and back which is 10 miles round trip. There are hills and flat areas but what I like is the variety of scenery. There are forest areas and wetland areas and the trail isn't overcrowded. It is fully paved and peaceful. There is usually enough parking but gets more full on sunny days later in the day. A morning run has never been a problem finding parking.
