I've been shopping at Menards for many years and love their 11percent off sales. Needed to pick up…read moreone item the other day and was able to get in out quickly. They had plenty of open cashier's. Stores are clean, and seem to have almost everything under the sun for a home improvement store.

Not having been back to a Menards in a very long time, I found the prices still to be the lowest…read moreamong the major home improvement centers (i.e. Home Depot, Lowes), but the service this time was really good. Frankly, this surprised me. Menards was a very important name early in my adulthood where free moments were occupied doing various things related to home improvement, and every weekend meant at least one trip to Menards. You accepted the observation that service and quality was better at other places, but the prices couldn't be beat and you had to weigh how long the product had to last. And for things that needed to be changed out (batteries, light bulbs), buying it at Menards was a no-brainer. Also, I worked in Wisconsin, and many co-workers would tell unpleasant stories about friends who worked at HQ and the main DC in Eau Claire. So this is the view that I lived with. This time my BIL wanted to go to Menards initially, so that's where we started. I ended up going back by myself multiple times because of my experience (and will probably go back again while in Chicago). There were multiple times when I couldn't find what I was looking for (I had time so didn't mind wandering a bit), or had to do something different (purchase toilets that would be later picked up by our contractor)...and each time, when I asked someone in that giant warehouse, they would direct me to the right place, call someone over to help, or walk me to the place that had it if I had gotten lucky and asked the right department. Every person was pleasant and didn't appear to be in a hurry (which greatly helps a customer not feel bad about interrupting). Some things don't change though...this week, they have their 11% rebate on everything sale...20 years ago, I remember coordinating getting the right rebate form, sending the right receipt with it, actually mailing it in, and then forgetting about it, until a postcard came later with a credit to spend at Menards. They are notorious for this...the other box retailers have made rebates more automatic and digital, Menards continues to use postal mail, mainly so a larger percentage of people just drop out...plus it is a store credit, so it encourages to shop more in the future. And of course, because they are so big, they have the opportunity to purchase things not related to home improvement in bulk at certain times, and pass the savings on to their customer. They have groceries (not great prices), but you will also find baked goods, and frozen shrimp for really low prices. You just can't depend on it always being available.

I recently rented a standing aerator from Rental Max's Carol Stream branch on a Saturday morning…read more Within one hour of using the machine (Toro), the rear left wheel failed to move forward, but it could still move in reverse, so I loaded it back on the trailer and returned the machine, where I received one of their Ryan standing aerators. About four hours into the job, the rear left side tire became flat, so I had to return to their branch so they could replace the tire. I saw them take a tire off of an already broken-down aerator to use in its place. Two hours later, the machine became completely inoperable and would not move an inch. Unfortunately, Rental Max was already closed at this time for the weekend, so I called and left a voice mail so that the time of the incident was recorded within their system. As I still had customers needing their lawns aerated, I tried to figure out what the issue was, and I saw that the chain driving the wheels came off of the sprocket and became very badly jammed inside of its housing. After many hours of mechanical work, in which I had to purchase a unique tool, I finally got the chain unjammed. To my amazement, the branch's assistant manager returned my call and was fully apologetic. He told me that for my troubles, I would not be charged for the rental at all and that they would get me on their calendar to make sure I could complete my remaining yards. The following day, in my first yard, the machine began making a loud clicking sound, and yet again, the left rear wheel stopped moving; this marked the third time in 24 hours it had stopped working. I immediately checked the drive chain to ensure it was still intact, and it was. Completely fed up now, I was able to back the machine onto my trailer. Then, I called Rental Max and left them a voicemail explaining the situation again. When Rental Max opened on Monday morning, I returned with the machine. I worked out with the Manager, Sean, details on how I could get another device and was told that they only had the two devices I had used, which were both now unavailable as they were being serviced, so I had to wait. Once I was at home, Sean contacted me concerning a question about a part. He then informed me that he would charge me for the rental even after his assistant manager assured me I wasn't. Sean kept telling me that he was running a business. In the end, we settled on charging me the four-hour rate instead of the full-day rate, and I would get to use the machine, when ready, to finish my jobs. Three days later, I picked up the same Ryan machine I had used. Within thirty minutes of using the device, I see my yard torn to hell, and the tire is flat. I contacted Sean, and he sent out a staff member to change the exact tire, which was changed three days prior. Once the tire was changed out, I was suitable for about five hours until (two working on the machine) and the left rear tire failed to move as the drive chain was off yet again, making it unmovable. Fed up with the device, I called Sean and left a voicemail explaining where it was located and that he would have to send a crew out to retrieve it. The following day, Sean called me back and told me that he would charge me for the blown tire as "it was a brand new tire." The exact tire, mind you, that I saw his crew take-off of a different machine being serviced and placed on that machine. After informing him of that, he tried to tell me that the tire was a new one that had just been put on that machine before being swapped out and onto my machine. This morning, the same individual who changed the tire the previous day came to help retrieve the broken-down device, and I asked them if they had ever figured out what was wrong with the tire. He replied, "I don't know, it just blew. I think they are going to try and patch it. It was just an OLD crappy tire, so I don't know what good that will do." I will never use this Company again. At first, I thought they stood by their product, but what good is that product if it breaks down all the time? Furthermore, they have zero integrity and will go back on everything they say. Make sure to get everything in writing. Lastly, take pictures of every single thing before and after. They will try and charge you for anything and everything. It was Sean that made this such a terrible experience. The rest of the crew was great and extremely friendly.
