DO NOT RENT A CAR FROM THIS COMPANY! I reserved an SUV 2 1/2 weeks before a ski trip to Tahoe. We were scheduled to arrive in Reno late Saturday night and we stayed in a hotel for the night. The Rent A Wreck outlet was closed on Sunday, so arrangements were made for the key to be hidden and I'd be able to pick the car up. I was told I'd have to send scanne images of my drivers license and credit card. I called 4 days before arriving and spoke to Jerry, who was reluctant to give me his name. I told him i was ready to send the email, but asked if there was a way to avoid sending an image of the credit card. I have been the victim of identity theft and emails get hacked - I offered to provid my card number overthe phone so they could process the charge. Jerry (real name Ali, as confirmed by their head office) told me he'd have to check with head office, but he was 99.9% sure they would not accept that. He said if he didn't call back in an hour, the answer was no. I then asked him to simply call me to let me know. He then said "I'm not renting you the car" . I asked "why, all I did was ask you a question"? He said "you phoned here 6 times and argued with me" (this was completely untrue). I offered to send the card image, but he said no. I asked to speak to the owner and he said "I'm the manager - I make the decision". I then asked for the phone nmber for their head office ut he would not supply it. I found it online, called and spoke to a woman who agreed this should not have happened, gave me a case number and promised a senior erson would call me back within a day, but nobody called back. I ultimately rented from Enterprise. This was my Seinfelt moment "no soup for me" from Ali. Save yourself the aggravation - this company has no corporate integrity. Horrible customer service. They stated on returning our car we would have a ride to the airport 10 min away and would be there at 830am. They didn't show up until 8:44 (we had already called Uber at this point) they have no after hour assistance so if something happens to you after hours you are on your own. DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THESE PEOPLE. This is a scam. I prepaid for my car rental including insurance. They were happy to take my money. When I arrived on the day to pick up my car, I called their phone line to schedule a pick up. They never showed up. The store hours listed on the message machine said they were open until 6pm. This was a lie. I paid $300 for a car I never received. Expedia won't reimburse me. Rent-a-wreck won't reimburse me. I guess Expedia's policy for reimbursement is that they must contact the supplier before they will reimburse you. Obviously the supplier won't answer Expedia's calls or emails. All I can do now is post a negative review and hope that nobody else does business with Rent-a-wreck. I will be posting a review here, and reporting them to the Better Business Bureau. I made a reservation through Expedia and chose Renta-A-Wreck because they were an option through a supposedly reputable company like Expedia...my mistake. The car was clearly shown on the options AND after I made the reservation as having Unlimited Mileage. Luckily, I phone the Reno center directly to ask about an interior option, and they asked how far I was traveling during the week's reservation? I told them approximately 1200 miles and they quickly stated that Unlimited Mileage didn't include anything past 500 miles. What?? How is that unlimited? I'm so glad I had a reason to phone beforehand and didn't find out the day of my trip. I canceled the reservation due to this misinformation, false advertising, and Expedia was unable to secure and refund, told me that the rental company would not cooperate. The price was amazing for 5 days to drive from Reno to Lake Tahoe and tour. With a name like Rent-A-Wreck, we expected that the car would be beat up. We were amazed that we got a Subaru Forrester that was like brand new with a user friendly GPS. The off airport site was a bit off putting, but we called when we got our baggage and they arrived promptly. We were glad we didn't have to stand and wait in the very long lines at the other rental companies on the airport premise. After filling out the paperwork and a thorough walk around to inspect the car with a very helpful agent, we were on our way. He also directed us to Costco for the return fuel fill up. Well, of course once I reported it through my creditor, they eventually replied and confirmed they would process my refund minus the penalty fee. It still took them forever to do so. My creditor actually credited the charge first, because they had no response from them either. Then, this company finally refunded me, so my creditor had to go back and reverse the charges, another inconvenience. So, they did resolve it, but nowhere near in a timely manner, and also created additional issues. Ugh. read more

I was a little worried given there were some bad reviews but I figured I'd take my chances, and if worse came to worse, we'd find another option at another rental company nearby. We only needed the car to get up to Lake Tahoe and then get back to the airport and wouldn't be using it much while we were up there. So it wasn't worth paying premium price for 4 full days. The prices here were super cheap- way less than other rental companies. Upon arriving at the airport we called them and they came to pick us up within about 10 or 15 minutes. The check-in process was super easy, took less than 5 minutes. The car was a Toyota Corolla with a few scratches, definitely not a "wreck". It was a little sluggish heading up the steeper parts of the mountain to Tahoe but not bad. Gas mileage on it was really good. When we went to return the car, again a very easy process. We were a couple of hours early but they didn't mind- just checked the car in, grabbed the keys, and took us right over to the airport. It was very easy, quick, inexpensive and friendly. read more

I rented the vehicle for a Tahoe trip Feb 4-11. After calling Dawn, I was met at the airport within 10 mins. Most of the paperwork was completed prior to my arrival. Returned Dawn to her office & headed up the hill. I arrived at the office on the following Saturday & Jerry dropped us at the airport which is only 5 mins away. I had no issues with the car which had 62,000 miles. It was great deal considering the exorbitant rates the "on airport" rentals are currently charging. I would not hesitate to rent here again. Now I understand why their cars are so cheap and literally "wrecks." This business and the individuals working here are unethical and unprofessional. Mind you, the car is in poor condition to begin with so I don't understand the point of her taking videos. I now understand that this is so they can charge you for normal wear and tear when you return the car (as per other reviewers). Two months into my rental I had to take the car in to be fixed because a plastic piece was falling off near the bumper and they blamed it on me! Throughout the time I had the car, it was so squeaky and made a horrible buzzing sound whenever I went over 20 mph. I called and emailed Dawn several times to get another replacement car, but she either ignored my request or told me she didn't have any cars available. My dad recently came to visit me and noticed he could barely see out of the rearview window because it was so dark and tinted. The car didn't have window shield wipers on the rearview window. He wondered how I've been driving with these issues because the tinting makes it so hard to see out of, not to mention extremely dangerous. Finally, because they are closed on Sundays and my car is due on a Sunday, they want me to leave the car in a random parking lot and take an extensive video of it so I can prove I didn't damage anything during the time I rented it. I've never had to do this with other rental car companies or Zipcar. This company is ridiculous and money is the number one priority for them! Finally, I was pulled over and my car was towed because they didn't bother to update the stickers on the license plate. They made ME pay for the tow and demanded to see my ticket, which I sent them. Dawn told me she didn't put the new sticker on because people "steal them." They have yet to refund me for the towing. I only put up with this company for months because I was working 7 days a week and had little free time. I didn't have the energy to argue back and forth with them and keep on getting replacement cars just to have to return the car and get a new one. I will be filing a BBB complaint and talking to a lawyer. DO NOT RENT FROM THEM, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE TAKE MY ADVICE. Like another reviewer said, if you want to rent from this company, make sure you have a good lawyer. Horrible horrible company!!! Had a hard time finding a large van for a drive-through graduation, So I just rented from Reno Rent Wreck. (Worst decision) The back vents did not work in the van, it was super hot! my mother got a heat stroke so we had to park the van and take care of her. The van was Repossessed from the rental company during our rental, in which our stuff was still inside as well as a few graduation celebration items and due to the repo, the van was not returned on time, so the company did not return my deposit, nor did I get any of the items inside of the van back as the office manager lied and said there was nothing inside! This was the worst experience ever, especially during such an important event. I do not recommend this company at all!! Not to mention the office manager was rude on the phone and hung up on me because I slightly raised my voice, only because she would not let me speak and I knew she was lying. 0/10 recommend this place. It was slightly cheaper than the rental places at the airport but not worth it whatsoever. My mom and I went in and they acted immediately annoyed that we were there. I can only assume this is a money laundering front because otherwise they wouldn't be in business. They first tried to give me a compact car when I paid for a larger car. They shook their heads very annoyed when I pointed this out and then eventually gave me a Subaru Outback which was filthy and reeked of cat pee on the inside. I returned the car over two weeks ago and still have not received my $200 deposit. They won't answer the phone but luckily I live in town so I plan to visit in person and get my money back. They falsely accused us of causing damage to the car which did not exist when we returned it. Then they took our friend outside after accepting the car and showed "damage" (clearly underhanded) or two easily removable dents. They produced one estimate for over $1400 as if they had to replace the entire hatch back (on a 67,000+ car), and then tried to charge us for over a week of "lost business days". Horrible company . This is our first experience and it will be our last. We rented a van and we were called the day before and said we were out of radius. It was in the contract in fine print that we saw later. But there was absolutely no effort to try to correct the situation or to give us any help. The receptionist was so rude she actually hung up on us. Also we got an email stating that even though we had already paid and they canceled on us it would take 14 days for a corporation to refund for their cancellation. In my opinion the Worst place to every rent a car. I had an experience which i felt was higly unprofessional make sure you read your entire contract because in their contract it states that if there is an act of God you are required to pay for their vehicle to be replaced. I personally feel it was a horrible rental experience. Please don't make the same mistake I did it cost me almost 3 times the amount i paid up front. There were details in my contract that were not explained to me. But because I signed a contract they dismissed all the evidence and information I provided showing things we're not explained to me. In my opinion please go with a different company it's not worth the hassle or complications i feel. I even talked to corporate and they said there's nothing they can do because it's a franchise. I came out to Reno to work for a few months and I needed a car to get around, but nothing fancy. Since I don't have a credit card, my options were a little limited. A friend of mine from back home recommended using Rent-A-Wreck as he'd used it before and had a good experience. I had a very good experience myself. The rates were reasonable, and my car, while less than glamorous, was very reliable and got me around for the few months I needed it to with no problems. When I needed an extension for a week because my stay was longer than anticipated, the owner was very accommodating. Only downside is that it is slightly out of the way. Would definitely recommend, especially for a long term rental if you're looking for a functional, solid car at a good rate! read more
