My husband, son and I went on a late Sunday morning. Living close, we were excited to try this spot, which seems to be cursed with businesses coming and going. Let's start with the positives. The staff seem really nice. The food came out quick. We enjoyed the food. My husband got the Cowboy Killer. He thought it tasted good but it had what I jokingly refer to as Chris Farley's "Fat Guy in a Little Coat" syndrome. It's a whole lotta sandwich on a tiny bun. Why do that? I got a simple eggs, bacon and toast. I substituted the toast for one of their sesame bagels and cream cheese, since it seemed like a signature item. It was a tasty bagel.Not the best bagel I ever had, but I ate it all. The bacon was a good cut, thick, flavorful. Eggs done well. My son got an oatmeal. He can't talk yet, but I suspect he enjoyed it the way he gobbled it up. I also got the rum cider. It hit the spot on a cold Chicago winter morning. While I would only call one thing a blatant negative, it's a new place and ironing out wrinkles it seems. They'll get there I'm sure in no time. My one major negative is being cash only. Don't be a sit down restaurant that serves alcohol and think you can be cash-only. It's awkward. It promotes people ordering less, or begrudging you for the $3 service charge from your ATM. Sandwich shop? Sure, cash only I can get behind. Not you guys. And lastly, this is less a negative and more a pet peeve. On the way out, we perused the pastry selection. It looked fresh and delicious, so we decided to split a muffin to bring home. Guess what I was charged in this cash only establishment? $3.01. Yes, three dollars and a PENNY. WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYY???? You own this place! You can control the pricing! The cashier just waited as I fiddled around looking for a penny, and finally I had to pull out another dollar. I took my 99 cents and put it in the tip jar. Maybe then they will understand why three OH ONE is so annoying. Also, from a marketing perspective, it's foolish. Countless studies have proven that it is not effective. I love Reno for brunch during the week. The coffee is excellent. The husband's favorite is the lox bagel sandwich! I've enjoyed muffins, bagels, a salad, and more. Everything is very tasty. The service is professional and knowledgeable. The room is furnished with heavy wood tables, banquets, and booths. The chairs are a bit uncomfortable for a lengthy meal. Street parking is basically impossible, but there's a parking lot northwest of Reno near the subway station. I highly recommend Reno. read more

Ok... I literally have dreams about their jalapeño pesto pepperoni pizza (aka the Paulina). Just this afternoon I woke up from a nap believing that my husband had brought it home, and I was crushed to find out it was all in my head. So naturally we ended up there within the hour. We always get the Paulina and sometimes add a kale salad (used to be Brussels sprouts but they don't make them anymore). The kale salad is solid and I love the dressing. I kinda wish they cut the kale into smaller pieces bc it's kinda challenging to eat, but that's a nitpicky comment. I've been to Reno...Not Reno, Nevada....a few times now, and each time has been a positive experience. I really like what they did with the decor, and I'm always intrigued by the side dishes that they have to offer in a given day. The sides are rarely something I would think of ordering, but I've yet to be disappointed after ordering them. Very fresh ingredients. I've had both the chicken thigh sandwich and the messy bagel egg sandwich. Both of which were very good....as well as the coffee. I've yet to try the pizza, but will definitely give it a try in the near future. Give Reno a try...it won't be a bad bet. read more

I stopped in to Reno this morning to pick up some breakfast bagels for my coworkers and I. I had been reading about the amazing wood-fired goodness for a few days and my throat was definitely watering! My two coworkers ordered the My Everything bagel with plain cream cheese. I splurged on the sesame bagel with cheddar cream cheese. There were real chunks of cheese in the cream cheese and the flavor was so light and delicious. Definitely not overpowering with a strong cheddar cheese. The service was quick and friendly. I really want to go back to try some of the other food during the day or even to try some of the other shmears and bagel sandwiches. Plus, there was a brownie with pistachios, bourbon, and toffee that I will starve myself for a week to try! It looked out of this world :) I'd highly recommend this place for breakfast. I've been here three times, each time hoping I'll like it more, but it's not happening. First, I'll join the chorus of complaint about the ridiculously overpriced bagels. My family had gotten back from a trip and were starving, so I ventured out to grab some bagels. Four bagels were $11. Just the bagels. And not the greatest bagels in the world. I've lived in Logan Square for eight years, yearning for a simple bagel place. Why oh why do all the new restaurants have to be so overwrought and overpriced? I've taken the kids there for pizza, which was actually quite good, and the wife and I went there when we couldn't get into Longman. The service was great, but there's something about the menu that's confusing and frustrating, and I can't put my finger on it. I just don't like eating there the same way I didn't like eating at Ciao. Reno, if your bagels were $2.00 and came cut with cream cheese, I would be there giving you money every day I promise. This was our first time here! There was no wait, as we went around 1 PM on a Sunday, but it was a loud environment and becoming more crowded as we finished eating. Regardless, our food arrived in a timely manner. We ordered a salad and a pizza, and both were quite tasty. However, there is a catch to this place that they fail to tell you before sitting you down. I've scooped up breakfast here many times and the service and food was great. Had dinner last night and was disappointed by the service. It was not very busy but the server was not very attentive. Food was ok and I'm surprised that bread isn't served with pasta. About $10 for pasta dish. Server did not ask if we wanted another drink and when we decided to get desert to go and he just brought the check. The bus person was extremely friendly. There was a wait for desert so another drink would have been nice. We did wind up going to the bar for that drink and the bartender was not very friendly and frankly acted like we disturbed him. The cash only policy is annoying but I knew that and should have gone to my bank for cash first rather than pay the ATM fee in restaurant. I stopped in after church for a bagel. That being said, they just give you a bagel, not cut, and the cream cheese is on the side. Not acceptable. And the bagels are just medium-sized. I actually make bagels at home and they are not as big as Bruegger's but they are bigger than these. When I got home, the cream cheese served on the side was whipped, fluffy, and only enough for one-half of the bagel. The bagels need to be increased in size, cut, and the cream cheese needs to be denser and applied at the restaurant. Just had Reno for the first time tonight. We live right around the corner and we were very excited when we saw they were open for business. We decided to try the pizza and called to place an order. We were told they do not take phone orders which was the first disappointment. We still wanted to try it so my husband went there to place the order. We ordered the Reno pizza and an apple cobbler. The pizza was just okay. It lacked flavor and was burnt on the bottom. The apple cobbler had no actual "cobbler" to it. Just nuts and apples. I think I still would have enjoyed it except they put the cinnamon ice cream on top of the cobbler and in the same to go box instead of packing it separately so it was a big melted mess when my husband got home which is only a 2 minute walk away. Undoubtedly the sort of place best suited for a group later in the day when Pizzas highlight the menu but equally amicable to the solos and large parties looking to sample and share in the morning it was with a bit of deliberation that we settled on our order and with sharing plates provided it was only the cheeseless poutine with an overcooked egg that failed to wow, the rest of the order inclusive of the smoky bagels, upscaled cheddar bay biscuit, and nontraditional but thoroughly impressive English Muffin serving as admirable warmup to a trio of well conceptualized sandwiches - the Hook perhaps the best thing ever done with cured salmon and a true stunner to someone who has never understood the sustaining popularity of the ingredient at any time of day, let alone breakfast. read more

I came to Reno with a friend after an intense workout. I was so hungry and so happy to be with my friend. Maybe these factors are influencing the number of stars I'm giving Reno. Regardless, the cavatelli + chicken was so good. My friend and I also got the butternut pizza, which was unique and flavorful and satisfying. The service was great and the food came quickly. Noise level was moderate (for a Thursday night) and lots of people were in and out for food and drinks. I hear they have Wifi and coffee in the morning. An interesting bagel, pizza, and bagel sandwich menu make this busy corner cafe in Logan Square right across from the blue line a solid choice for a quick bite. We did the Saturday breakfast menu this weekend. I had the Cowboy Killer which was amazing. The sausage was excellent, and the bagel was solid. The other breakfast sandwiches were tops. Yum. The bloody Mary was solid. They run on the hot side. They are paired with the "Wisconsin Style" small glass of beer as chaser which is always a nice touch. The crowd was fun, or funny. Lots of mom's and dad's taking the hipster kids out. There was an amazing sameness to the kids: same shirts, same pants, same shoes, same messenger bags. It seems the Mall Rats have invaded Logan Square. Mom, don't forget to bring some bagels home for the hipster kids - they need to eat something. Overall, a good people watching place with a nice decor and a good quick food menu. read more

This place is okay. The pizza's are pretty decently sized and reasonably tasty. The meatballs that we got were also pretty good. I would not recommend the grapefruit italian soda. It tasted nothing like grapefruit and was much too sweet. The service here? it's absolutely terrible. We never saw our waiter again after he took our order. I had to flag down some random worker there to get our check. Once we got our check? Nobody ever even came to take the money so that we could get change. I think that we sat there for at least 10 minutes before we finally just got sick of it and left. That's really unacceptable. The Montreal wood-fired bagels are excellent, the staff congenial, and the design is clean. Why only 3 stars? Disorganization. Here's my story: We walk in and wait in line, the gal at the counter asking if we are dining in and tells us to sit anywhere. Miscommunication: apparently we shouldn't have sat down at the large communal table, we found out after 15 minutes that it was for to go orders only. Another couple had made the same mistake and left at that point. We moved to a newly open table. The waitress is stressed and rushing. We order 2 bagels, 2 coffees and 2 waters. It takes 30 minutes from sit down until we receive bagels, but no coffee. We ask for the bill and skip the coffee. The owner apologized and threw in 2 coffees to go for free. I really want this place to work, but it will take clearer organization between the 5 staff members working the floor and communication with customers. Would counter service at breakfast and lunch be a solution? I think the menu is casual enough to warrant that. Then there wouldn't be a huge confusion between to go orders and dine in. The staff could focus on the counter, running food to tables, refilling drinks, and chatting up the customers. I really hope this was just a really busy, off-day. My girlfriend and I love this place. We live 30 seconds away and we've been anxiously awaiting their opening for months. We've gone 4 times in the last 2 weeks. Yeah, it's new and they're working out some service kinks, but I have no doubt that in a few months it'll be a well oiled beacon of bagel/Pizza making light! I'm giving them 5 stars for the food, even though I think the service is a little shaky here. They are in the neighborhood and we frequent this place weekly. Their pizza is extremely consistent. I've been looking for pizza this good (neo style hybrid) for a while now and nothing matches up to what I've had in SF, NY, or even Detroit (Supinos is Brooklyn/Neopolitan hybrid and is amazing). Anyway, Paulina, Combo, Kauliflour all top notch. The Hog is delicious, but missing something. The burrata is heavenly. Had it with the fig jam, and the currant jam. I'm disgusting when I say I could eat one to myself as a brunch item (it's so french toast like and comforting). Salads are great, Frysee and Quinoa. Both top notch. For brunch we get the bagel sandwiches (everything bagel) pretty regularly. Love the chewiness of these. If you are looking for a big airy doughnut like bagel, look elsewhere - these are their own kind. Cowboy Killer I cannot get away from, it's messy and heavy but so satisfying. Last weekend we went with a group and noticed they had Chilaquiles and a potato hash now - which both were excellent. Remember that R.E.M song, "Shiny Happy People?" That's what I was reminded of by the greetings and warm welcome we received on a first visit to Reno. I was impressed with the hospitality and attitude of the staff here.The next thing which impressed me is the menu. Such a nice variety and creativity at work. You can get a cheese bagel with avocado schmear. Try that at your standard bagel deli. There's a morning and noon menu which allows for either breakfast or lunch until the dinner menu kicks in. And what a nice combo of bagels with great shmears, breakfast sandwiches, regular sandwiches, pasta dishes, fresh salads, and wood-fire pizzas. Oh, and some very creative desserts and pastries, too. I for one, would like to try all three meal times. Prices are reasonable. $7-8.00 for sandwiches. They are a la carte, but you can order chips for $1.00. The bagels are $2.25 which is more than I'm used to paying, but this is not your basic bagel takeout joint. And their bagels are their own. I like the idea of wood-fire bagels, but I'll have to return to try one. While my friend had the lox bagel sandwich, I opted for a regular sandwich of tender, tender roast beef with red onions on their own sourdough bread. With a horseradish sauce. The sandwiches are a moderate size, so you may want to add a side, if you're really hungry. We had the lemonade and fresh grapefruit juice for drinks. Cocktails are a little pricey but available. On Tuesdays, they have a "twofer" pizza offer for $20.00. And $2.00 PBR and whiskey shots. I like the concept of good fresh casual dining and the thought of pairing a bagel with a cocktail. You cannot give it an ethnic I.D. except to say that it leans toward Italian with the pizza and pastas. If I lived in Logan Square, I'd probably become a regular. The bf and I stopped in here late-ish on a weekday night. Grad school makes me hungry :) I was a little nervous reading the menu ahead of time - pizza, pasta, bagels? What? Thankfully the dinner menu, while not terribly big, provided some good options. We started with a salad to share, then split a pizza. I dreamed about their Master Blaster after having it for the first time. The pork is succulent and the buttery crunchy bread with the provolone had me swooning. The sandwich is huge. I had half one day and saved the rest for the following day. My boyfriend ordered the Old Bay Bagel. If you like Old Bay, that is definitely for you. If not, stay away. It was not my cup of tea. The price is cheap. We spent about $20 for our two meals with a pastry plus tax and tip. I can not complain. We ordered take out and it was ready within ten minutes of our phone call. I find being a cash only establishment to be pretty obnoxious. I think that the least you can do when you ar e cash only is to include the tax in your prices so that everything comes out as an even number. While it was a hot summer afternoon, I decided to go for the vodka lemonade. It was as if the vodka wasn't adaquetly chilled when it arrived at my table because my first few sips were rather warm. I had to stir for quite a while to get the ice to cool things down and it wasn't a supurb drink to begin with. The chicken sandwich which I saw on a website that eneded up drawing me towards having a lunch there was a little on the bland side and though I had hopes for the combination of honey chicken thigh, cheese and pickles, it came out of the kitchen with speed that suggests that it was being held warm, which made the sandwich a little on the dry side. Without a ton od hot sauce it was also a little on the bland side. At $9 for a chicken thigh, it is a little on the pricey side. I don't think I'll try this place again. read more

Reno is great, the perfect kind of place for its location and a can't miss. Before Reno, this space was occupied by Ciao Napoli, which made delicious pizzas in the wood-fired brick oven. My husband and I were so sad to see Napoli go... ...until Reno opened! Reno uses the very same wood-fired brick oven to make delicious pizzas that are just as good, nay, better, than Ciao Napoli's. Reno also plays really cool classic records, and has updated the decor to a more artistically pleasing and tasteful assortment, in my opinion. I've had a few different salads, pizzas, and pastas here. I am also pleased with the beer selection! Haven't tried a bagel or lunch/breakfast or anything yet, but I'm sure I will at some point. I hate to admit it, but there are certain foods for which, if you love them, you have to make a trek to NYC, because Chicago really doesn't do them justice. Pastrami is a classic example, and bagels, unfortunately, are another. Reno certainly doesn't change this situation, but it's a valiant effort. Bagels ($2.25) come in 6 varieties (some favorites like sesame, and some oddballs like pumpkin seed/curry) and they're pretty good: chewy on the inside (so you know they're boiled), crunchy on the outside (but without the pleasant flake of a good NY bagel), and flavored vigorously. Definitely a leg up from the rolls with punched-out centers that are par for the course on the Chicago bagel scene. All in all, I'm very glad this place exists, and I'll probably come here when I find myself in Logan Square on future lazy Sundays. Also, they clearly respect the bread, so Im curious to come back and try the pizza, which may well earn them another star in my book. Part of living in the midwest means being willing to forgo certain things that other cities do better. This means that yeah, whiskey is better in the central South, seafood on any coast, the film scene in LA is superior, and in New York there are better bagels. These are all pretty much facts. Chicago does a lot of things well, but bagels aren't one of them. That being said, if your expectations for a bagel aren't what we (half) Jews are looking for- chewy, doughy, and massive- you'll probably enjoy one at Reno. They're tasty and flavorful, but they're not the boiled bagels New Yorkers expect. They're a new breed- which is fine, but a consumer has to remember that in order to not be disappointed. I'm going to agree with the quality of the bagels that my comrades are bemoaning, and I'll cite my Jewishness as part of my reasoning, but I'm not advising any of us to move to New York under any circumstances. Though the bagels that form the breakfast sandwiches at Reno are not from The Old Country by any means, there is also no way that Reno would exist in New York. It's a big space, on a corner lot, at a fantastically popular intersection. In Brooklyn, this space would be ten people's apartments or an entire bagel factory. It's only due to Chicago's relatively lower economic density and the exponential but not yet complete gentrification of Logan Square that a place like Reno could even have the wherewithall to open up. But I'm glad I live in Chicago and not New York for the same reasons I like Reno- it's an accessible, affordable, I can wear the same sweater when i go on OK Cupid first dates that are still in the single digits but honestly will not be much longer. Reno staff are always polite, attentive, and friendly, even through the crowds of coffee-beggers or older men hitting on younger and more attractive women. In terms of food, I'll give the bagel three stars, any of the contents of their sandwiches five, the Brussels sprout salad two because the Brussels were mixed in with something that was called pork belly but had the texture of latex, five for the two pizzas I've tried, and five for the Manhattan that the suave bartender with the occult tattoos and the long hair made me for $6 while he told me about his spirituality that is based in the California wilderness. I came in with huge expectations and while not a bad experience, dining at Reno was alright. Minus the food (which was tasty), there need to be some adjustments on a few things. I'm assuming since it's a new restaurant they will have their flaws so I don't want to be *too* critical. Let's start on the positive aspects (and most important!): the food. We went for dinner. The "Hog" pizza ($14) with pork belly carnitas, salsa verde, mozzarella, rajas and cotija cheese was everything I hoped it would be. Pork-y, cheese-y, and jalapeno-y! The crust was baked to perfection and I loved how you have to fold the pizza to eat it. (I'm not a big deep dish pizza fan [Oh, the horror! to say that in Chicago!] so I like that feeling of folding pizza!) We also ordered the Cavatelli pasta. It had acorn squash, apple cider, spinach, golden raisins, and pepitas. Flavor-wise: excellent. The pasta was al dente and the spinach and squash worked well together... and the soaked up golden raisins --- nice!! However, because the pasta itself isn't paired with a heavy tomato-based or cream sauce, it was hard to eat with the watery apple cider sauce. In a grotesque but fun way, because the pasta is cavatelli noodles... seeing them shaped like bugs was a little disturbing/amusing/exciting... or on another whimsical and less weird comparison, they look like little hot dog buns too. Now, the service. Here's where things got a little annoying. When I came in for a table for 2, the host was very friendly and said there were some 2-tops almost through with their meals and there would be a 15-20 minute wait. That was fine. He kept me posted throughout that time. (It was more like a 25-30 minute wait. No worries, Reno! You can never predict those things.) When we sat, there was no introduction from a server (nor did we know who our server was) for a good 10+ minutes. I understand restaurants are busy, but at least a "Hello. I'll be with you in a second..." within the first five minutes would suffice. Eventually, I had to flag a server down. I saw another table nearby also searching for a server. When we did locate a server, he took our order for drinks (I ordered a Mexican Coca-Cola) and we placed our initial order for the Hog pizza. Another server came out and brought the Coke to the table next to us and asked if they ordered one. They said "no" and then he asked me and I said, "Yup. That was me." (So there's a lack of communication there between him and our server.) Then we also placed an order for the pasta. The pasta came out first and then the pizza about 5-7 minutes later. We were in and out in an hour upon sitting. Lastly, the restrooms are not clearly marked. My friend was wandering around until he had to ask someone and they said it's either of the gray unmarked doors toward the back. How was he supposed to know that? What if, he rightfully asked me, it was a storage room or the kitchen? I don't know if that's part of the aesthetic consideration to have unmarked restroom doors (is that en vogue these days?), but come on... I saw another guy confused looking for the restroom as well. I know Reno is new and all, but at least label their restroom doors. It's practically a public health concern! :P A few last tips: they have valet if you plan to drive. My friend has a car so we rolled together and it was very hard to find street parking in the area on a Saturday night. Not completely shocking since Logan Square is an increasingly popular destination. There's a paid parking lot nearby as well (behind the Logan Square El station). (For us public transit folks, it's across the street from the Blue line El so that's convenient!) Secondly, it's cash only. They have an ATM machine inside, but you'd probably want to avoid fees so bring cash! So... I liked this place and they probably have some improving to do, but I don't think I'll be coming back despite me enjoying that pizza. read more

We've been to Reno several times as they have the best bagel and lox option in the area and we're very happy to have found it. We havne't had a problem with seating each of the times that we've been there and the food has been quick, reasonably priced, and the flavors were fantastic. We will definitely be going back and we're excited to share it with visitors. Mad Props: * Breakfast sammiches are epic. I get The Hook (no onions) and the hubby gets the Cowboy Killer and they're both amazing * Homemade bagels are stellar * Awesome take-out counter... perfect for passing through the neighborhood or grabbing to-go for the Farmers Market * Great otudoor seating in the summer!! * ALSO, their parfaits are fantastic. When the waitress suggests a kale salad for an appetizer after your group just ordered a second round of stout beers, you know you're in Logan Square. I'd categorize Reno as a nice backup option if other Logan spots are too busy. Things I like: -Focaccia appetizer. Hit up Reno (CASH ONLY) with a group of 5 for dinner on a beautiful Saturday night. They do have a decent amount of patio seating but it was mostly tables for 2 (and it was mostly full) so we had to snag a booth inside. No wait though! We started with the burrata which came on a really thick ciabatta toast. Great appetizer and definitely enough for ~4 people. For entrees, 3 of us shared a Paulina (pepperoni with pesto), a Squirrel (chicken, corn, onion) and a Hog (pork carintas, salsa verde). I think the group favorite was the Hog, but the Squirrel was also extremely good. The Paulina was fine, albeit less unique than the other two. Food was excellent overall, 5 star worthy. However, I have to drop the overall rating to 4 stars because service was incredibly slow. We wouldn't see our waiter for really long stretches of time and it took forever to track him down to get the bill at the end. Would be happy though to bump the review up to 5 stars on my next visit if the service is better because the pizzas were great! read more
