    Renard - April 2017
    Cindy D.

Renard is located in the Village near the Beaudry metro station. I always wanted to try this place, but whenever I got there it was always full of people (which is usually good news btw). Recently, I was in the area and decided to give it another try... and yay!! it wasn't too crowdy and I was able to get a table. The staff was amazing and very friendly. The music was loud but bearable. I wasn't that hungry, so I ordered a platter of cold meats and cheeses as well as marinated olives, a microbrewery beer and the fortune cocktail which comes with a fortune cookie of course! I would recommend this place for the awesome atmosphere and will definitely be back very soon!

Great bar in Montreal with an amazing selection of beers on tap. The wine and cocktail options are awesome too. Fantastic place!

Presentation and service were both fabulous. We split some appetizers and left very satisfied.

This place is always packed for some reasons, maybe it shows that we need more spots like these in the village.

The first time, the music was extremely loud, and it seemed like they were short-staffed. The bar was completely packed, and there was only one bartender making drinks, so the wait was a bit longer than expected. We decided to give it another try, and I'm so glad we did. The second visit was amazing! The bartender working that night was incredible--she clearly knows her craft and made our drinks quickly without sacrificing quality. Every cocktail was delicious, and the overall experience was much more enjoyable. Overall, I highly recommend The Coldroom. My only suggestion would be that, with a space that busy, the bar could really benefit from having an additional bartender during peak hours. It would help keep wait times down and make an already great experience even better.

Something for everyone. The part that makes this different is the outside courtyard. The walls are all and brick and like being in a castle. We were seated without any issue, ordered a pitcher, and our kids had water. About 20 minutes later, we were suddenly told there was a $10 minimum per person, including the children, and were told they could order a soft drink or juice. Aside from the fact that a juice or soft drink obviously doesn't cost $10, what made the situation particularly frustrating was that a nearby table of three adults had only ordered a pitcher of sangria and, as far as we could see, they were not approached about the same $10-per-person minimum. The message felt pretty clear: we were the only table with children, and they didn't want us there. If children aren't welcome, that's completely fine--but then simply tell families at the door rather than seating them, taking their order, and then introducing a "minimum per person" 20 minutes later that doesn't appear to be applied consistently to other customers. We understood the message, quickly finished our drinks, and left. Needless to say, we won't be returning.

We got seated in the lounge area and I ordered a dirty martini to start. Our server, Christine was so nice and I enjoyed chatting with her. I also ordered a negroni which was very good. They had a DJ arrive at one point who was playing a bit of like easy house music - you know the kind that sounds like one long song and has no words? It added to the vibes and I enjoyed it. Would definitely return and think it's a solid spot to go out for cocktails that is a little more festive than a chill bar.

And it's unclaimed here on Yelp. We found it by searching for cocktail bars on Google. Place was busy both nights we were there though! This became our after dinner drink spot for the weekend. Bartenders were very friendly and helpful, and actually looked like they enjoyed their jobs as they helped contribute to the fun relaxed atmosphere. Drinks were creative and delicious. Music they play is the typical chill/lounge/downtempo/electronic where after a while it all sounds the same, but it's perfect for the ambiance and it's not too loud. Drink menu is only available through the web site, which is annoying (to me), but easy enough to overlook.

Wonderful curation of nerdy, interesting and TASTY wines. Special shoutout to our phenomenal dreadlocked server who had a way of explaining the food/menu/drinks and checking in that didn't feel overbearing, too wordy, or awkward... just kind and attentive. The service was friendly but they seemed short staffed that night. We were trying to refill our water glasses but it took a while since I couldn't find any waiter or waitress around. Now let's start with the food: Focaccia: 5/5 bread was warm, toasty and tasty but the dip was the highlight Leeks with smoked mackerel, mustard, tobikko: (2.5/5) too creamy with a hint of mackerel and leeks Calamari chou-fleur, asian pear, chili beurre blanc: (2/5) very soupy and too much cream and not flavorful Black cod miso sauce, daikon, kale: (2.5/5) cod was tender but my bite had too much miso on it. It was extremely salty and not well balanced Beef tartare with mushrooms, Asiago: (1/5) mushy texture and way too much Asiago cheese. Flank steak with burnt chili salsa, szechuan pepper sauce, pickled peppers: (2/5) steak was not tender at all and the sauce was overwhelming Fried sea bass with bok choy, soya, nuoc mam (3/5): presentation was great but too many bones with too little meat. Flavor was good and I enjoyed the warm crispy fish with the Vietnamese style salad Overall, my special dinner was disappointing. I felt like the main ingredient never shined and their cheese or cream or sauce were just too overpowering. I really wanted to like Cadet but it fell short of my expectations.
