That was the only time I dealt with "the owner", no matter how many times I asked for him to call me. I met the foreman of the crew, Carl. When the owner, Jim, left the site, before any work had begun , his last words to his crew were "no swearing". I wouldn't have thought that would be necessary. It seems he had a knack for foretelling the future. The tear-off of my existing roof began, and was done quickly. Moments later Carl rang my doorbell and asked for an outlet to plug into. No problem. Then he asked to borrow an extension cord. Ok, no big deal. The re-roofing of my home commenced. As I stood in my backyard watching the work being done, a heated argument erupted between two of the men. Who was the faster shingler. This went on for fifteen minutes. One standing at one end and the other standing near the middle of the house, screaming at each other, with every other word an F bomb. I have neighbors and their homes are very close. Finally, after waiting for Carl to put an end to it, which never happened, I yelled "ENOUGH". Carl came down from the roof and told me "they always do that". I told him I don't care if they want to go at each other, but not on my roof, and not screaming expletives the entire time. I went inside to have some lunch. Doorbell, "sir, do you have a caulking gun I can borrow"? Three work-trucks in my yard, and tools are being borrowed from the homeowner. Written on my contract in black and white it states that Stockton Roofing will attach each shingle using six nails. I watched the majority of the shingles installed on my roof and I would be over-estimating if I said that 3% of the shingles were actually installed using six nails. I asked Carl and he boldly told me, I don't like to use six nails. It's not necessary. I asked him, why put it on the contract if you're not going to honor it. No answer. Standing in my front yard, I watch as the "ice shield is put down. The run was ended about ten feet from the end of the roof. I watched as Carl then "doubled up" on the felt paper in the area that didn't get ice shield. This is against building code. I mentioned this to Carl to which he replied, "I used titanium ice shield in that area. It's better than the other stuff". I've worked in construction and knew that this was an outright lie. I asked, "if it's a better material why didn't you use it for all of the ice shield"? No answer. "We don't have enough shingles. I sent someone back to the shop for more". Shingles arrive, work begins again. Compressors run out of gas and they have none. I fill their compressors with my gas. Work finishes. Contract states, gutters will be "tuned and cleaned". Never happened. I voice a few concerns with Carl and he says, I'll take care of it. Never happens, they leave. Immediately, my power vent that expels hot air from my attic space, is howling like the fan is scraping the housing. I call. Carl shows up promptly and says "we probably tweaked the housing when we were working around it. No worries. He arrived in his work truck, borrowed my ladder and tools to go up and remedy the situation. Noise is miraculously gone. He admits that they must have moved it while working around it. I'm satisfied. Several days later the noise returns. I call again. Again Carl shows up and borrows my tools and ladder. This time I'm told that the bearings in the fan, that he was able to quiet before, are now bad. I laugh at the coincidence and voice my reluctance. Carl tells me that he has a fan at the shop that he'll bring on Monday and install for free. Two weeks later, no fan, no call. I call Carl and I'm told "Jim says that if you want to pick up a fan, we'll come back and install it". Now I'm angry. Cut to two days ago, the rain is pouring down. I'm in my recliner watching tv at about midnight and I begin to be dripped on...a leak. I call. Two different workers come to my house. We look at the offending area of my roof and the tell me that they'll be back to make the repair...and to re-roof the area that never received ice shield. I'm told that there's no such thing as titanium ice shield (hint, I didn't need to be told that, I already knew). They return later in the day and tell me that Jim, the owner, told them that Carl told him I was an "a-hole". They then told me that they told Jim that I was a decent guy that wanted the job done right and didn't want to be lied to. I was also informed that when they came to my house to check the leak that Carl was hiding in their van and didn't want to face me. But... I'm the "a-hole"? It's quite some time later, still no fan. Note to Carl. Don't lie to people, and if you do and get caught... own it. The two "professionals" that repaired my roof get 5 stars.
