Sold used item with missing parts I ordered online for pickup. When I got home, I opened the box to discover that they had given me a used item. That would have been OK with me, except that it was missing parts. Oddly, it also had a couple extra parts (this was a roof rack, so it comes in three separate parts, each with its own bolts, tools, etc). I had to make a second trip to trade it for a complete kit.There's probably another box at their store that's missing the parts that were in my box. This store should check its opened returns more carefully. read more

Terrible experience. Have been there 2 times and could not get anything because most staff members have no clue about what they sell. No small sizes for men. Today's was even worse. The guy I was working with left me alone in the middle of conversation. Got back after a while to say that he is leaving and pass me to the other person. She told to the guy that she is leaving too. As a result they both silently left me alone. 21st century service. read more

Went here today and made my first running shoe purchase at REI. I shop here periodically but usually just to get supplements, socks and cold weather gear. There were just a few people there when I went in and was helped by Rudy who let me try on the clearance item running shoes. After running around the store in a pair of neutral Saucony I was later assisted by Serge who recommended more of a stability runner. The stability shoes weren't on sale but the shoes I purchased were the most recent version of the adrenaline GTS and they felt really good. I had been overdue for a new pair of daily trainers. I knew immediately after trying on the brooks adrenaline that I had found my new trainers. Whats weird about running shoes is that each model and edition often fit and feel different. It is an advantage brick and mortar shops have on the online stores because you can wear the shoe in store. I reduced a star because I had a not so good experience online here when I found a really good deal on running apparel that I quickly purchased. I waited a few days for the item to be shipped and then got a notice that the order had been cancelled. I was under the suspicion that my product was given to another customer after I had waited swiped my card to later be told the product was unavailable. I had requested for the item to be picked up in store so I figured another customer after me moved ahead of me and secured the item. I felt cheated and hadn't made another purchase at this store for at least two and a half years. I was told by the store (their version of what occurred) that when orders are placed online they get a preliminary inventory of what is available at the warehouse. The inventory count may not necessarily be accurate as to the actual product on hand at the warehouse or distribution center. So I guess this would be considered giving REI a second chance. The employees here have always been friendly here. This was a really good experience because both Rudy and Serge were patient with me while I tried on at least five pair of shoes. Serge was particularly helpful because he seemed to have really good knowledge of running and differences between neutral and stability running shoes. When I need to find something specific I come here and they have it. Some things I just can't stand to buy online because I need to see if it will work the way I want it to or feel the way I need it to so I don't mind making my way into this place. They have a huge selection of everything and new products I didn't even know I could get. I do a lot of hiking and this place has good quality items that do the job I need and can take the abuse that I give them without falling apart or disappointing me. read more

I needed a good shoe that has to be on hard cement floor for 40 hours weekly . I went to REI because of their reputation!! I purchased a pair of HOKA!! They were excellent, until the 3rd hour of work. I had to exchange them... Deb, in the shoe department, was so helpful that I was certain I chose the right store for my work shoes. Deb brought out various pairs of HOKAs to try. After some time, I was certain that I was getting the best shoe for my feet.. Deb was knowledgeable and patient!!! Went in at opening this morning and was quickly greeted with "dogs aren't allowed", sending me on my way. I understand that dogs come in all sizes and dispositions, but my 7 pound Jack Russel puppy held firmly in my arms? Keep your rule, but try managing by exception. I've been to this REI three times but I don't think I'll be back. The store itself is fine but the customer service is embarrassingly bad. I make eye contact with multiple employees and smile and they purposefully look away. Nobody acknowledges my presence in the least. Not sure what the problem is, but if you're a manager at this store reading this - please have a conversation with your staff. The other reviews here are proof I'm not alone. read more

Good products, service is friendly but not very knowledgeable and will often speak/recommend blindly. If you know what you want and like to look around at cool outdoor gear.. this place rocks. Biggest complaint is how aggressive they are about becoming a member with them. It's got great benefits, but i've never been able to talk to a single employee without being given the same LENGTHY speech.. They're friendly and non confrontational about it.. but i hear it EVERYTIME. read more

I've been to this store twice now, and I think it's a solid 4 stars, especially compared to other REI locations I have been to elsewhere. I went in on a weekday around lunchtime to try on some shoes. After standing around in the shoe area for 5-10 mins, the ONE woman working this department was able to tear herself away from a very demanding, chatty customer to ask me what I wanted to try on. A bit later an additional woman joined her on the floor, but until then it was a bit tricky to actually try on anything. The shoe selection was also not as large as I've seen in other REIs. I ended up buying a pair, and got them for $25 off using my member dividend from last year. Score! On a previous visit, I was looking for new tubes for the bike I bought at another REI a few months back. I was also looking for a collapsible, waterproof rack bag/crate of some kind for hauling groceries and the like. The bike-dept guys were very helpful, even willing to tell me what other stores (not REI ones!) I might be able to find what I was looking for. They also let me exchange some other (wrong size) tubes I'd bought at another REI previously, even though I had already tossed the box it came in. That was true REI member-service. read more

I called prior to coming in to ask about climbing shoes. I visited the other REI location (I think in Beaverton), and they had a small selection of climbing shoes. Hence why I called prior to coming in. When I was connected, the gentleman on the phone was really polite and told me that they had a bunch of shoes to pick from. When I got there, the man I spoke to on the phone recognized me and helped me more in store. And he was right, they had over 8 pairs to choose from, one slip on, three velcro, four lace-ups. And that's just for mens. They have others for kids and womens, and two other pairs in a small clearance section two rows behind. Sizes are down below the sample shoes and they have more in the back. I spent a good hour and a half there just trying to get a good fit and finally decided on a pair of laSportiva Nago's. The man was really informative and helpful. I'll definitely go back to this store for the customer service alone. I didn't have time to check out any other sections, but it's REI, and I'm hardly ever that unimpressed with REI. But, the counter lady wasn't that friendly and she was the manager. She kept looking at my sister when I was the clear customer bringing money and size 12 climbing shoes to the counter. I felt as if she was looking at my sister for confirmation about what I was doing. And it took a while for them to realize that I was a paying customer. There was another cashier, but she seemed really invested in talking to this other guy. I didn't want to bother them. read more

Came here to buy new snowboard boots, and waited for a half hour with no help. Employees seemed like they were avoiding eye contact and helping other customers for a large amount of time. Ended up leaving because we were so frustrated. For the entire time we were in the store, we were not acknowledged by a staff member once. read more

This place is great, and often has sweet deals. I get discouraged when I am standing around looking for help for a while before being noticed. It's retail hell, but hey, it's like that anywhere you go. The wait simply implies how great the place is and how efficient the customer service is. When I am helped it isn't someone just rushing to get me out the way. I get an employee that knows what they're talking about, and gets me what I need before I walk away. Kudos! read more

Good place if you know what you want after you've done the research yourself. If it's a more complicated issue or question, then you're probably better off going to a specialty store that deals with that specific sport or activity all the time. For example, if you want skis or bindings, you go there off-season to find skis. There are none or very few of the items in-store. Then the salesperson you talk to, you realize, has just the same amount or less knowledge you have and is now consulting the Internet. Fairly good selection of stuff. Good return policy. If you're looking for really high-end gear and want to touch and feel it, you probably need to go somewhere else. read more

Came looking for snowboarding boots and was not acknowledged one time by any employee in the 30 minutes that I was there. After waiting about 10 minutes I went and asked for help and was told someone would come help shortly and still no one came or even made an effort at helping me in any way at all. 5 star customer service, awesome selection, competitive pricing for quality gear, and probably the only store whose brand-name products are as good as or better than other brands. I have had an REI camping chair for 7 years (heavy usage!) and it's still good as new. Whereas I have had many Coleman chairs over the years that last maybe 1 or 2 years. They have everything you need for anything outdoors. I find the salespeople pretty friendly here and usually someone comes up to me to ask if I need help. Yes, prices can be higher here compared to other outdoor stores, but I think you are paying for better quality here. It also depends on what kind of outdoors recreation you are doing, if you need rock climbing gear to triathlons. If you going backpacking, great packs here! read more

Echoing what others are saying. We have been fans and members of rei for years. New in the area and have been there 3 times in the past month to prepare for a trip. One time, service was okay. But 3 different people churning through the dept in 45 minutes made it chaotic and hard to get anything done. Other 2 visits were honestly just comical. Lack of any knowledge, any ability to find knowledge, and disappearing employees has had us discussing over dinner as to what the heck happened to REI. read more

I stopped in recently to check out the knife selection. I noticed they now carry a spring assisted Gerber and at a reasonable price. They have a decent selection of Gerbers including a few multi-tools. Not a bad place to pickup a good all purpose knife. read more

REI is my favorite company, period, and I love all REI stores. Their stuff is pretty pricy, but of good quality, and the service is top notch. Returning/exchanging a pair of hiking boots after a few hikes because you don't like them? No problem and no questions asked. It's such a wonderful system built on trust: REI trusts that customers will not abuse the system, and customers trust that if things go wrong, they will get their money back or try something else. Such a refreshing business practice! I was amazed when I heard about this for the first time (I mentioned to a sales clerk offhandedly that my boots didn't fit well even after a whole summer of hiking and he told me to bring them in and exchange them for a different pair!). This store is smaller than the one in the Pearl, but still pretty well stocked. Typical REI store (and that's a good thing). I usually hate shopping, but can happily spend hours in the store. read more

I have been a REI member since the 80's. As the store has gotten more Gucci and affluent over the years, I never buy anything full price and always looking for a good sale. I purchased a soft-shell jacket online at REI garage. The next day, I received in the mail their sale catalog with coupons. So I though I would take the jacket back to the store and try to use my 20% off coupon - even if it meant I had to "return" the jacket and repurchase. The young, pink-haired clerk wasn't willing to do anything to make the deal work for me. She said it wasn't the "spirit of the sale"! Really, I'm in my 60's. Isn't the customer always right? The jacket is on the counter, I have my credit card and coupon. I want that jacket. She wouldn't budge. I should have asked for her manager. I came home and repurchased online. Way to go REI. Making sure to create a larger carbon footprint by making a truck deliver a package to my home from some far off place! read more

I went in with low expectations looking for a specific gps but it turned out they have a great selection of handheld gps units for hiking/hunting and the prices are comparable to some of the online deals. So I bought the one I was looking for and wondered around for 15 minutes and was pleased with the friendliness of the employees and cleanliness of the store. While the selection is great. The items are overpriced and you can often find the items you want for cheaper online. When I walked in I was not greeted in a customer service friendly manner. I was instead stared at and was made to feel like I done something wrong. The sales associates were pretentious and snobby. I do not recommend Rei for out door clothes or items. When we need quality outdoor gear that lasts a long time we go here. True they are not the cheapest but if the product fails they will refund you without any hassle. I have had to return shoes when their soles fell apart and a jacket that shrunk in the wash. The sales people are super friendly and helpful even when their shoe department has been short staffed lately. Their ski and bike department does a great job maintaining our stuff in a timely manner. They were very helpful when we got a new car but could not get all the new parts to attach our Thule rack. REI did not carry it so they got the correct numbered part and checked a local non REI store for us and had them hold it for us! Amazing! That is superb customer service! read more
