10/10 would recommend REI for your shade needs. I got a few different quotes for various companies and settled with rei, the gentlemen came out and went over all my options. They were also more reasonably priced than the other quotes.
THIS was such a good investment in our whole home renovation!!!!! Our courtyard took a beating from the direct sun, making it intolerable to use the space in the heat of summer! We also found ourselves playing musical umbrellas to protect all of our plants! So, of course, I turned to YELP & IG and found a few shade companies and did the "bidding" process. There was only one company out of three that still cared about good customer service and listened to my needs. REI Shade Systems, Roy, and Chris set themselves apart simply by listening and coming up with a solution for our needs. I wanted coverage from the midday to afternoon direct sun but didn't want to block my office window that faced the courtyard from the morning sun ! We also needed something durable enough to withstand the gusting "Santa Ana winds," And they MADE IT HAPPEN!!!! First, they took time to string out the shade so I could watch how it would cover for a few days. They also placed it high enough and then twisted/angled the shade so the morning light would still shine through the office windows! No one else offered to go above and beyond like that! We couldn't be happier, and they definitely have our recommendation! We (pups and plants included) couldn't be more pleased with the end product! It's MODERN and SLEEK! It gives us so much shade while still keeping courtyard light and bright!
Super impressed with Roy and Chris. They did a fantastic job installing sail shades in my backyard. Better than what I expected. Really genuine people to work with. They're punctual. Communication is good. Price is reasonable. They were sweet to my dogs and kids and of course the final product is amazing. Highly recommend!
I called REI and Roy immediately responded. He came to our house within a couple of days. He was prompt and professional. Within a couple of days he had several designs for us. I was very nervous about this project, but he eased my mind by explaining how the area would feel. I was concerned that it would feel overwhelming but he was right. It was the perfect addition to our home. You can immediately feel the temperature difference. The quality of the product is excellent and you can't beat the warranty. I cannot thank Roy and his team enough for creating this amazing usable space that we will enjoy for years to come. The project took about one month to complete.
100 % satisfied with the shade sails and with the service. Our shade sails were installed August 2021. Communication with Roy was great. Roy came to our house to check out our backyard and gave us two quotes to choose from. He is honest and trustworthy. He helped us choose the right colors/design of shade and posts, and answered all our questions promptly (it is best to contact him through email because he is always out of his office doing work). I needed the shade installed before my daughter's bday party so I ordered it 2.5 months in advance to make sure it'll get done ahead of time. There was a delay in making the metal posts, but it was in the middle of the pandemic so we couldn't do much about it. I was a little nervous, but despite the obstacles and delays, Roy made it work and was able to install the shades right on time. Im really thankful for that! We chose forest green and latte for its 94% & 90% shade factor. Not only it looks nice aesthetically, but it also provides great sun protection. The metal posts and the shade sail itself looks durable. Its only been a year, but so far I dont see any sun fading, cracking or any damage. The shade also comes with limited 10 year warranty, which makes us feel at ease. I've called Roy back to tighten the shade sail as it slightly sags, but this is something he made us aware beforehand and they could fix easily. I highly recommend REI shade system for your next shade project!

We were dreaming of using sail shades in our back yard and a referral connected us to REI Shade Systems; a local company with great customer service, cool designs, high quality materials, and competitive prices. To say that we love our shades would be an understatement! Roy and his team created a unique shade design, helped fabricate a frame system, and gave us great ideas on how to incorporate a lighting plan into the area that worked perfectly. The process was very smooth from start to finish and the work was done quickly, on time, and within budget. The sail shades are the one thing that we get the most complements on in our back yard! If you are looking for a more modern shade system for your home, REI Shade Systems is THE place.
I am re-designing my small courtyard, and one thing that had to go was the sail shade I had bought online several years ago. Roy, the owner of REI Shade Systems, was prompt in responding with an appointment for an estimate, and continued to be very good at communicating with me during the whole process, even when my phone died and I could only communicate by email. Of the four companies I got estimates from, REI was the only one which did an in-person consultation; the others asked me for measurements and photos. During the consultation, I could tell that Roy and Chris know what they are doing. Within 24 hours of that appointment, Roy emailed me his estimate, warranty information, and an image of the design. His estimate was by far the most economical, even in comparison to another company using the same product, so of course I chose REI. I am so glad I did; the shade looks beautiful, and makes the courtyard useable for seating. Roy and Chris even added rope from which to hang lights in the future. I am really happy with the shade, and with having money left in my budget to make my courtyard even better. And I am equally impressed with this company's great communication, professionalism, friendliness, and efficiency. If you are looking for quality sail shades, REI is the company to work with, for value and for great customer service!

This review is long overdue. I inquired about a year ago and Roy was very prompt and professional in every aspect. Didn't deviate from the agreed upon quote and the finished product was great. Would recommend to anyone. Shade sail gets endless compliments. read more

REI Shades Systems/Roy was great to work with to get my custom shades up in my backyard. Prices were reasonable and was always very nice and able to answer ALL of my concerns/questions. Roy just put up a shade over our patio last month. It looks awesome and has cut the heat significantly. Our family is outside using the patio daily now. The shade offers such a nice look to our yard as well as being so functional. Roy was great to work with, he is friendly, professional and efficient. We were enjoying our shade within 2 weeks time. The cost is significantly less than putting up a wood or vinyl patio cover. Roy has many design ideas. The hardware and fabric is under a 10 year warranty. I highly recommend Roy, if you are looking for shade solutions. read more

These guys were fantastic. I simply don't have enough good things to say. They came when they said they'd come (often times early), walked me through every step, had design ideas, were responsive over email, and the work itself is top notch. It turns out my yard was more difficult than anticipated: when they had to dig holes it was nothing but root and rocks with a little bit of clay mixed in for good measure. They powered through what I know must have been a miserable job and came back the next day bright and early when it went long. They are friendly, the prices are good, the work is great, the results are better than I hoped for. I'm really glad I went with REI. read more

Do shade sails need to be taken down in the fall/winter and during Santa Ana winds, or can they stay up year round?
Most of our clients leave the shades up year round but as part of the warranty we can take them down for no charge and reinstall.
Does REI attach shade cloth to the top of a large pergola wooden patio cover?
We can attach to your wooden pergola (depending on where you are located) we just do not provide a warranty for this application. We have done this a lot and never had an issue but it’s not typically how the cloth is used. You can contact me…
