This one star review is for the manager in hopes that you will read it and make some changes. On August 9th I received a coupon for a discount with REI. As it happens, I was in the market for a new backpack for travels I will be taking in the near future. I was interested in a backpack that was either waterproof or watertight as I will be hiking in a coastal area that will be subjected to intermittent rainfall of a heavy nature. I called your store and inquired about such backpacks and was told that you had many to choose from. The following day August 10th I drove an hour to your store and began looking around in the backpack department. An employee who I assume was assigned to the department asked me if there was anything I was looking for. I opened the REI app on my phone and showed the man an example of what I was looking for. This employee was about 5'9" tall with brown hair and a short beard. I do not remember his name because the interaction was so unlike what I am used to at REI that I left completely confused. When I showed the employee, what I was looking for is immediate response was, " we don't carry that type of product, you need to go to Gear Junction. They will have everything you need." I looked at your employee with complete confusion as he was recommending that I go to a competitor and did not even bother to ask me why I was looking for a particular backpack. I said to the employee, I don't want to go Gear Junction, I always buy my hiking equipment at REI. He looked me straight in the face and said we don't carry waterproof rafting equipment here you need to go to Gear Junction. I attempted to explain to him that I was not going rafting that I was going hiking and why I was looking for a backpack. He seemed completely uninterested and again suggested I go to your competitor. Finally, I asked him. Is there anything in the store that you can show me That is in a 22 L size backpack so I can at least get an idea of what I'm looking for. He waved his arm briefly toward a rack of backpacks and said it'll be somewhere between here and there and then walked away. I stood there confused for a while and attempted to look at backpacks and finally decided to help with it. I had other items that I needed to look for, but I was so upset by this man's insistency that I go shop with the competitors that I left the store. I went to my car and sat there for a while and thought about doing this one star review then and there, and I even thought about going back into your store and asking to see the manager. However, I was so upset. I knew that that would not be the prudent thing to do so I came home and allowed myself to cool down. The following day did exactly what your employee suggested, and went to Gear Junction. The Young man working there was extremely helpful and very knowledgeable about backpacks. After listening to what type of trip I was going to be taking he suggested that I probably did not need a completely waterproof backpack, but that what I needed was a water tight backpack. He showed me several, and the one that I liked the most was made by Osprey. I assume that you carry the same backpacks at REI. I eventually decided on a backpack for my trip, but I did not buy it at your REI store. This is unfortunate because I have shopped with REI since the day you opened at your old location on seventh Street. I am not suggesting that your employee was rude to me. He was not in the classical sense. However, he was completely disinterested as to why I was in the store or what I was looking for and to what end. Had he taken just a little bit of time to find out why And what I needed I would've bought something that day. As it is, you've lost out on a good sale and if I encounter this type of behavior again at your location, I will discontinue shopping local and identify the Denver store as my home store and just shop online. I do not like to do this as I like to support our local businesses. However, I will not support this complete lack of customer service. I hope that you take this review in stride and make the reasonable management decision to have a discussion with this employee so that this does not replicated itself in the future. This place has phenomenal service. I went in about three weeks ago to get a new Dutch oven. I heard they strictly enforce the mask orders, which made me feel much safer. The guy at the door pointed me in the direction of where they display their Dutch ovens when I mentioned what I was there for. I had a bit of trouble finding it, but another associate saw me floundering and even offered to carry it for me. I'm pretty small and don't look very strong, so I appreciated this gesture. The guy ringing me up was very polite and made sure I got the most out of my experience. It's been a while since I went there and he was patient with the fact that I'd forgotten the phone number associated with my account. read more

Went in to buy a 100$ gift card never been in here before and won't ever be back. Wanted to look around but i was accosted 3 times while in the store for not wearing my mask properly. They didn't like that they could see my nose. And I'm not kidding and I'm not exaggerating. I was wearing a mask properly. But not to their standards. Now I was on the phone with my ear piece and the person was having a hard time hearing me. So I had my hand held up holding the mic and my mask was oddly on. But covering. 3 times I was approached as I said hey let me finish this call it's important. I'm here to get a gift card. I finally got pissed and told them to back off because they were close enough I had to back up They asked me to take my call outside. This place was empty and always is from what I hear I won't be back. I went back in and bought what I needed. And it is the last Money I'll ever spend there. read more

Like to bike, hike, be outside? You can get what you need here. Everything they sell is quality - not bargains. If you join the co-op, you get an end of year share, which helps with the price. Seems that everyone who works here knows their stuff first hand. So, you will get friendly and knowledgeable advice. Really, this is your go to for non-hunting outdoor equipement. read more

This isn't the biggest REI in Colorado. If you are looking for something arcane, you might be disappointed. However, it's a well-stocked store and the staff all knows the area super well. Planning on camping at Robb in Fruita; they'll tell you to make reservations cause it fills up fast. Want to ride your mountain bike? They can match your ability levels to local trails. Parking is easy, and access is nearby downtown or the road to the San Juans and/or Moab. I love visiting this store. read more

Why on God's green earth does this store close at 6pm on a saturday..... just talked to Anna on the phone and she was pretty rude. Just wondering if there was anyway someone would still be around 10 minutes from their closing time. Not upset that they won't be. But her tone of voice was unprofessional. read more

I love REI. I've been a member for many years, and have never regretted it. Every town I have ever lived in has had one, and for good reason! You can completely cut out your shipping expense from shopping online and having it delivered to the store, then sending it back if it's not quite right. I still go to the more mom-n-pop stores for more specific outdoor purchases, but for everything else, I shop here. This particular location is full of friendly sales folks, a decent location, and lots of sales. They also have large displays for climbing, camping and hiking! Hooray for REI! read more

Headed out on a camping vacation far from home over the Labor Day weekend, when we realized we had a serious issue with our Thule. Sought out the closest REI, in Grand Junction, and received efficient and EXPERT assistance from Forrest and his team of co-workers. They literally saved our vacation, and all deserve a massive raise!! read more

One of the smaller REI stores but it had what I needed. Good staff.

REI carries such a great variety of quality outdoor products that when paired with their great customer service it's easy to be a customer! This store isn't as big as some of the other REI stores I've been to, but it has the necessities and a great selection for it's size, in addition to great customer service that makes up for the size difference. Recently we had an issue with a pair of Yakima bike racks that were bought in Denver, but we were 8 hours away from Denver. After contacting Yakima, who contacted the REI store, we were put in contact with the manager, Melanie. She was super nice, helpful, and knowledgeable. She was also patient, as we needed several different parts and tools throughout installation of the new Yakima rack and we even broke one of the tools (sorry again). All of the other employees I dealt with were super friendly and attentive. The store looked well kept, including the bathrooms, which were clean. REI always has such cool signs and quotes put up as decor and this location was no different. One of these is on the floor as you walk in. Overall, nice store. Thanks again, Melanie! read more

I practically live here and get all my clothing here. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and helpful. The store is a little small and I would hope that they could expand soon. All in all it's my favorite place to shop. read more

The Grand Junction REI really helped us out during an unexpected disaster on a road trip. The manager, Melanie, was extremely helpful and patient while we had to reinstall corebars and two bike racks in their parking lot. She provided us with all the tools we needed to get the job done.
