A friend recently got me interested in vintage road bikes. One evening while exploring downtown I stopped into Brown Cycles to check out the shop. Chris immediately greeted me and introduced himself. We got to talking about my intrest in mnt and gravel riding and I expressed my new intrest in vintage road bikes. Chris walked me to the back room stocked with cool old used bikes from all eras. Chris educated me on proper sizing and different bike designs and components throughout the years. Before I knew it I left the shop a happy new owner of a vintage 70's Nishiki road bike. Chris's passion and knowledge for everything bikes was really cool to see. He's gained a new customer that will continue to stop in for all my bike needs. They brokered a sale to me of a bike with frame damage. The pictures didn't show the damage. This shop has no moral integrity and is perfectly okay with selling damaged product by trying to be sneaky. Would highly recommend that no one goes to this shop, because there might be safety issues with the equipment they sell/rent. read more

All around some pretty nice guys and gals. For small items I usually just go to whatever shop is closest at the time (I'm a wandering cyclist: why get a roof rack when you could just ride your bike there?), but when I have questions, or when I need something big I usually go here. The owner is very nice, knows his stuff, and has a good sense of humor. Their head mechanic, Woody, is very knowledgeable and always willing to answer questions (even if I haven't bought anything). I'm not sure if he works there anymore (I haven't seen him in a very long time), but Marty was also pretty cool and helpful. I think the main reason why these guys are my favorite shop is that they've never ragged on my ride. When I first started really getting into cycling, I had a cheap department store bike. When I would bring it in with problems, or even questions about how to make it a better bike, they didn't just tell me it was impossible/not worth it and try to upsell me to one of their own bikes. They actually gave me advice on how to make this cheap bike into a reliable ride, and thanks to their help, that bike has traveled a few thousand miles (much further than the average cheap bike ever goes). It isn't my only bike anymore (and certainly not my best one), but I don't take insults to it lightly! Getting it to this point took some work and some learning, and Brown's was always willing to show me how to do various repairs and parts installations. And therein lies their strength. There is no pretentious, holier-than-thou attitude that is prevalent in the cycling community at large. They just want to help folks enjoy cycling (and make a living while they are at it). My only complaint is that ordering parts in can sometimes take a week or more (I want it nowwww), and I often have to have parts ordered in due to the weird assortment of bikes I ride (for clarification, most of the other shops in town don't have what I need in stock either... the joys of having weird bikes). read more

Being a cyclist means you keep a mental log of where's good and where to avoid. But when you're a traveling cyclist visiting shoppes for the sake of curiosity, how do you know who's trustworthy? In part, you need to rely on the staff you give you words of advice, smiles, good nature, and all-around pleasant experience. Brown Cycles gave this couple from Denver an experience to remember. Not only did the mrs find a superb mountain bike in the consignment area, but I found something ridiculous for my collection. What we particularly enjoyed was how easy-going the staff was (i.e. no sales pressure, just helpful information) and their desire to make us happy. Well, we sure did leave happy with our new toys. Point is: bikes shoppes are dime a dozen in Colorado, but Brown Cycles is something special and Grand Junction should be thrilled to have them aboard. read more

We went to Grand Junction on the train from Denver for a little work and a little play but not to buy a bike. We were staying in the downtown area and we walked the shops and wondered in to Brown Cycles. I had been in the market for a road bike to purchase to celebrate my one year anniversary of having both my knees replaced but really didn't want to purchase from a shop so far away from me. We were approached by Jade who was very willing to listen what I was looking for as a novice biker but looking for a good bike that I could get my knees back in shape with. We never felt under pressure and she gave me a number of options. We told her we would return the next day to discuss further. We did return and Jade remembered who we were and asked if I wanted to ride the bike for the afternoon and give it a test ride. I agreed and they also gave my wife a bike to ride so we could ride together. I loved the bike and purchased it. I got a fitting and at one point talked with about every employee in the shop and got the same fantastic service from each one. They boxed the bike up for the train ride home and Chris, the owner, delivered it to the train station the next morning for the trip home. I did have one concern with the bike when I got home and Chris made sure I was taken care of completely here in Denver with a Bianchi dealer. I had my bike stolen right before the summer got started, so I was in search for some new wheels, that weren't too expensive. This bike shop has a nice selection of bikes, new, and especially on consignment (in the back). The guy who assisted me was super courteous, well informed about all things bike, and very helpful with contacting the person who was selling the bike I wanted. I ended up getting a screaming deal on a perfect new-used mtn bike in great condition. They even did a brief check up/tune before I was out the door. I am very happy with their service, and not to mention the convenient location. Hands down they have the best used bike selection. I'm visiting town and just had my road bike stolen (Specialized Tarmac Comp with Ultegra components). I walked into Brown's the same day and got to talking with Chris and another customer about it. Both Chris and the other customer were extremely sympathetic and took the time to listen to what happened and offer suggestions on how I might get the bike back. The other customer happened to be retired law enforcement and gave me tips on working with the police on the case. Chris then took the time to introduce me to the mechanic and he too had some good suggestions and encouragement. We talked about cycling for a while and some of the big races that had come through the area over the years. I mentioned to Chris I was disappointed I couldn't get to ride the famous Monument loop and he offered to lend me a road bike my size on the spot. I already owned a couple of bikes when I moved to GJ last summer. I've taken my bike there for work many times. Every time the work was done earlier than promised, at a very reasonable price, and with excellent results. Plus, the folks there are very friendly, like if it was your brother's shop. I've recommended Brown Cycles to my friends, family, and newbies to town. If I need my bike worked on, or want a new one, Brown's is where I'm going! Rented a couple of Trek Fuels that were in great condition. Brakes were perfect, shifting was on point. Staff was friendly and helpful. Rentals do not include an multi tool however as the shop is rightfully worried about renters not using torque specs. This was a big problem for us as our saddles were angled upward and we didn't catch it at the shop. In addition, our pedals were so tight that it caused me to crash a couple of times. Bring your own pedals as these were pretty trashed. Also, the multi day discount doesn't kick in until day 3. Other local shops are cheaper and have an additional discount at day 2. There is a great selection of bikes for sale, and a decent selection of rental bikes- mostly mountain bikes of course. Quality. Customer. Service. I have been in many shops, most are unremarkable or terrible. Chris and his team are happy, easy to talk to and just get it. I rented a long travel bike from them for the day and it was in perfect mechanical order, which is often not the case with rentals in my experience. While there Chris noticed a rear pivot on my short travel race bike was loose and repaired it while I was out riding (unprovoked and after asking if he could). That's just above and beyond! I have rented mountain bikes from Brown Cycles twice and they were extremely helpful. I'm relatively new to the mountain biking scene, but they gave me what I needed and were great to work with.
