I've stopped by this REI location in Fresno multiple times now, and have had mostly great experiences. This REI is spread across two floors, with a giant staircase in the middle of the sales floor. The top story is mostly clothes, while the lower floor has all the bikes and gear. Overall, Fresno REI seems a bit smaller than Folsom REI, but Fresno ends up having more inventory, because they are better at keeping their shelves stocked. It's hard to remember exactly which gear I've bought from exactly which REI, since I shop across at least four different locations. But, from this location specifically, if I remember correctly, I've bought some stickers, some bug spray, and a packable clothesline. This store really excels at cleanliness and merchandising. They keep it looking great, even though they are presumably a high volume store. On the other hand, this location isn't as great as some others at offering customer service on the sales floor. Last time I was here, I walked around the building a few times in hopes of getting the attention of a sales associate before finally just getting in line to ask my questions. One associate seemed to be ignoring me in favor of using his cell phone to text on the sales floor. He didn't seem to be on break-- he seemed to be on duty, but avoiding me. When the cashier asked if anyone had helped me, my "no" might have had some attitude. But, luckily, she was super helpful, and answered my questions. Overall, I love REI, and will probably continue to shop at this location when I'm in Fresno. read more

At first, I was a little ticked off about the lack of service and a lot of green vests standing around talking to each other. Brett in the in the ski rental department was fantastic! Great service, he could clearly read my body language that I was not very happy and took such great care of me,I became a member based on Bretts service. We stopped at this location today to pick up our new Garman mini in reach 2 from this REI location. After entering the store we were fortunate enough to be able to pick up our package quickly and work with Jackie to set up our new device. We have been spot users in the past but our spot device was acting flaky on our PCT hike so we decided to pick up a new Garman. Are used to work at an REI so I know there's always some kind of expert in the store that can handle the set up of these devices. Today we were super fortunate to work with a Jackie to get the new Garmin device completely set up. She was super helpful, patient and kind as we work through this process. Believe me it's not always easy to get these devices going and to get this much help from her was exceptional. Her friendly demeanor and fun attitude made it enjoyable and educational as she showed us many features of the new Garman that we will be using during the rest of our hikes this summer. By using our REI credit card we will actually be able to get 10% back plus an additional 5% on this purchase which is always a bonus! Not so much to review of the store but a review of its wonderful employee Jackie!! I love this place and the staff here. They are always super knowledgeable and willing to assist you. We inquired about camping in Joshua Tree and they had mentioned renting a sleeping bag or pad from them if we weren't entirely sure which one to purchase outright. They also have classes each month geared to getting outdoors. Some are free and others you need to pay for. The garage sales are just OK. Sometimes you get a killer deal, but most of the time it's 40-50% items that are final price and non-returnable. read more

At the suggestion of REI Customer Service, I stopped in at this REI store, located in Fresno's River Park Shopping Center, to return an online purchase that I had made. As you approach the store, you immediately notice that this store is not messing around when it comes to the safety of its employees and customers due to COVID-19. This location is quite small as compared to my go-to locations in Santa Monica and Orange County, but it fits the bill for Fresno. I expected a larger location due to the proximity of Fresno to many outdoor activity areas. You can tell that the outdoor bug as bitten quite a few people in this area because there was a lot of emptiness on their shelves. Entry to the store is limited and a covered waiting area is provided outside for those waiting their turn for entry to the store. Social distancing is strictly enforced. This REI is a leader in providing clear distance markers. Employees are masked. Cashiers are protected behind plexiglass barriers, and sanitizer was available at the counter. Employees were very friendly and ready to help. Maryann provided the best customer service for my return item. read more

David was beyond AMAZING! We needed specific parts that we left behind for bikes heading from San Diego to Yosemite and he was so so helpful and kind. We called ahead of time and David helped us understand exactly which parts we were talking about. Compared to the store in Tustin this store is smaller but also has a second floor which the Tustin store doesn't have and its cleaner, organized and more lit up then the Tustin store. Every department we walked through someone greeted us or asked if they could help. Great place for the outdoors person looking for new equipment, gear or clothing. I have never experienced the attitude, rudeness and lack of customer service from a place. I will not be returning. Ski rental place was empty at the counter. I waited. I was in no rush, just figured someone was in the back busy. I received a call and answered it. Hung up and then asked if someone was in the back. No answer so I walked to the cashier section to see if they could call someone. A guy rudely said he was waiting for me to get off the phone. I said I'm sorry it was a work call before I realized how absurd it was that I was apologizing. I wasn't mad about waiting but yet he was offering explanation as if I was. I let him know I wasn't mad, I just needed some help. He immediately got defensive. Shocked I stopped walking and said you know what it's okay, I can go somewhere else. He made a mannerisms like whatever and walked away. I asked to speak to the manager and he said he wasn't present so he could say anything about the situation. Like what. All I wanted was some help and this guy was defensive and rude for no reason. And I could see him making mannerisms when I was talking to his manager. It was so shocking to witness that behavior and a manager say he wasn't a witness so that was that. After reading some reviews, it seems other have had similar issues. I don't know the reason but it's so disappointing. I was shaking and almost in tears because it felt so out of nowhere. And nobody gave two cents. The first time i came into REI, i was wowed by the membership perks and customer service. My road bikes back tire was flat so i bought the membership, with a new tube etc. Upon arriving home, my front tire was completely flat. I had transported my bike via truck so there was no way it got flat in my trunk within 15 mins. Why my front tire wasn't aired up to check its entirety- not sure maybe it's just a common curtsey i've received at previous bike shops. Nonetheless i went back to REI to utilize the awesome membership they provide. Upon arriving there i was not greeted, only confronted by an older gentleman near the ski rental space to ask "what did i need". i explained i needed a tube with slime in it- that i had a membership. The older man went to tell the younger guy what i needed, the younger guy took my bike, without asking what i wanted, and went to work on it. No slime was added after it was fixed- so i then told him it was incorrect and he fixed it. Ten minutes later i heard a huge pop- assuming it was my tube that popped. When the guy brought me back my bike, he didn't seem so customer friendly. not even a "have a great day" or "sorry we popped your tube". Anyways, riding out of REI with slime residue all over my bike was a nice tip. Mom and Pop shops are definitely the way to go when it comes to bike service. I don't know if i'll use this paid membership anymore- regret it kind of being a lifetime thing. I rather stick to friendly, caring shops that go the extra mile to look out for you. read more

I purchased several items as upgrades to my ultralight backpacking arsenal. The prices are decent and comparable to other major retailers- plus your member dividends perk! The men's clothing section was decent, I wish they would stock more of the smaller person clothes (I'm 5'5", 130 lbs.) I was able to find everything I was looking for- including an item that the website said was in stock but couldn't find on the sales floor. A helpful employee checked the back stock and voila I had my item! Overall, I would recommend this store. read more

Guess who feels 100% more prepared to hit the hiking trails now?!! ‍ I cannot say enough about how great my experience was at this REI! I feel extremely lucky to have Anne be the associate who asked if I needed assistance. She was so unbelievably knowledgeable in every aspect, especially with being prepared and what essentials I should have while out on the trails. She spent time with me where I found a comfortable day pack, and showed me how to adjust all the straps to fit my body. I walked out with a day pack, water bladders. emergency kit, whistle, headlamp, and emergency blanket. I also became an REI member and have the list of classes they provide for hiking, etc. I went back today to use the $20 off coupon I got for becoming a member and bought a water bottle with a filter (again was a suggestion from Anne on my last visit). I know exactly where I'll be returning if I have any more questions in regards to the outdoors. Went in searching for a running shoe. A member helped me to choose a pair and told me that I could try it out for a couple runs and if it didn't work I'd be able to return it within a year. The catch? Sign up to be a member, pay a one time fee and reap the benefits - one being able to return my shoes within a year. Went into the shop today to return my shoe. Danny "Dan", who helped me, at first greeted me in a friendly manner, until he found out I wanted to make a return. He asked for a receipt and I explained that I didn't have one but was a member and was told that I'd be able to return without a receipt as a member. He looked me up, looked at the shoes and became irritated, telling me "no one's going to want to buy this. In the future clean it before returning them." The soles of the shoe had one or two pebbles on the bottom, the rest of the shoe was in good conditions. I've worn the shoe twice for two 5Ks, nothing else. I was receptive of him telling me to clean my returns in the future until he thought it would be ok to shame me and rant about possibility of reselling the shoe was little. I tried to ignore his behavior. Then he asked why I was returning it. I told him it didn't work like promised during the initial sale and worked similar to my everyday shoes. He kept asking me to elaborate. According to him, he was friendly and helpful, but his demeanor and behavior show otherwise. I don't care if he was an older gentleman, you get the treatment you give others. I lost my shit, and told him I was told I would be able to return when they were trying to sell me a membership. He said "I didn't say you can't return it. What's the issue?" I told him the issue was that he seemed bothered that I was returning a shoe after being told I could after giving it a couple run. I told him this was not the behavior and treatment I had when their staff member tried to sell me a membership. If it was such a huge deal for him, maybe they need those specific instructions included in their sell pitch. Extremely unfriendly and his behavior was not called for, I don't care if you've had a busy day, so have I. Bought Solomon hiking boots that got a hole in the fabric after about a dozen wears. I tried to return them and was told they were used in the wrong conditions. They were used for walking on a trail with snow on it. They claimed that they are "warm weather" shoes and that snow voided the warranty therefore could not be returned or exchanged because of the hole. I asked if they are appropriate for use with dirt and rock and the manager said "yes". I then asked how walking on (not through) snow would damage the fabric of the top of the boot? He couldn't answer my question and refused to return the item or ANY form of compensation. I've shopped here for years and paid a premium for the warranty. Time to start ordering form Amazon or the manufacture directly. read more
